So a cold icy start this morning. Watch out for slippery spots. We will see temperatures climb after the morning commute. By 9 00 well still be below freezing in philadelphia with cloudy skies. But then breaks in the clouds 35 degrees and climbing at noon. Well go through it neighborhood by neighborhood, hour by hour with the future weather when im back in ten. All right, bill. The first alert traffic now, we are following the aftermath of the deadly pileup on the new jersey turnpike last night. This is video of one of the people shotwho was stuck in the traffic jam last night. One person was killed in the chainreaction crash and Dozens Injured after the tractortrailer jackknifed near exit 8. Youre looking at cell phone video taken there. This is video from a new camera at the scene. Police say more than 20 vehicles were involved 7 trucks, a fully loaded bus and 15 cars. And yes, investigators say icy conditions on the road may have played a part in that accident. The official cause is still under investigation. And yes, its still being cleaned up. So still a problem if you are commuting around that area. And nbc 10s first alert traffic reporter jillian mele will show us how to get around it now, jillian . Route 130 is a good option if you want to avoid this portion of the new jersey turnpike. Southbound near route 33 with exit 8, you can see all the cleanup being done out there this morning. Its been out there for hours. This is in the outer drive again. Route 130 will get you around that. Heading to septa right now, septa officials just tweeted this in the last four minutes that norristown speed line service is suspended until further notice but theres no reason why. I want to pass this along. The rest of mass transit is looking good so far this morning with no other accidents on the highways in pennsylvania. Delaware roads, expect to see slippery icy conditions. As far as the rest of the majors in new jersey, we are seeing an accident on 295 northbound approaching route 30. Icy conditions is the headline this morning. Be careful heading out the door this morning. Steps, sidewalks and roads may look wet but can actually be coated in sheets of ice. Nbc 10s katy zachry has been experiencing that live in wayne, Delaware County. Katy, how are the roads and sidewalks there . Reporter hi tracy. That was a good checklist you went through. Steps, sidewalks, the side streets, this is like a mini ice skating rink im standing on right now on the sidewalk right along lancaster avenue. So the curves i can tell you ive been testing out throughout the morning. The curbs are icy. Lancaster avenue is really glistening with moisture. The majors and interstates are pretty good for the most part. In the last 20 minutes, i have seen a half dozen salt trucks go by. And also guys just spreading salt on the area sidewalks because it is so icy. And you really dont realize how icy it is when you walk out your front door. Thats going to be icy. When you go to your driveway its going to be icy. And youll have a thin layer of ice on your vehicle. It might not seem like a lot, but its definitely going to add, i would say, an extra ten minutes to you getting out of the house this morning because you have to wait for your car to heat up your windshield to clear off with the ice. New from overnight, a plane that left from Philadelphia International made this crash landing in houston. We reached out to American Airlines and they told us the landing gear just did not deploy. Thats what happened there. The American Airlines flight operated by us airways was flying from Philadelphia International airport to george bush intercontinental airport in houston. And this is the new video we just got into nbc 10 from our sister station there in houston. You can see the plane just as we saw in that picture there tilted forward and surrounded by emergency crews. 52 passengers and 4 crew members were on board evacuated with slides. We spoke to a Family Member of one of the passengers who said his dad is pretty shaken up from what is a terrifying experience. And new from overnight, the North Hampton county twoalarm fire destroyed a home in lower east University Avenue last night. No reports of any injuries and the cause is still under investigation. And we have new information about a house fire in wilmington. In this case a man who was pulled from the burning home last night has died. The fire started at 7 30 on north market street. Medics rushed the man to the hospital but he died a few hours later. A few people suffered from smoke inhalation but they will be okay. And happening today, septa and one of its unions is going before federal officials. At issue, specific work rules. Union Officials Say these put riders and workers at risk. Jesse gary is live at the 30th street station. You have been looking into the rail safety rules. What have you found on that . Reporter no accidents over the past three years involving septa engineers at the helm of Regional Rail trains along the septa system. But the brotherhood of locomotive engineers and trains is believing that the suspension of the safety rules does put the riding public at risk. Now, all of septas train engineers work more than 40 hours a week and most work six days a week. This after septa three years ago requested and received from the federal government a waiver on certain safety rules. The p they claim they are working toward minimum Safety Standards but that puts passengers at risk. I talked to septa officials on the issue of safety and was told during the more than two years this waiver has been in effect no safety issues have been noted where the waiver or engineer fatigue was a factor. There are four incidents on the rails from august to october of last year. But again, septa said it has nothing to do with fatigue or the waiver that is in place. Now there is a Union Official who just flew into philadelphia late last night for the hearing. And hes headed here to 30th street station to talk to us. The group is finding solutions to wilmingtons Violent Crime epidemic. Well get to work today. And the wilmington public safetys Strategy Commission will meet for the first time made up of law enforcement, citizens and business leaders. The commission will look at ways to improve policing strategies. Yesterday nbc 10 broke the news that New Castle County police will be working alongside wilmington officers now. The public is invited to comment at tonights meeting at 5 30 at the walnut street ymca. 5 07 and off to the atlantic casino crisis and the ever growing revel saga. Revel is planning to cancel the 95 million deal to sell the casino hotel to a developer this morning. And an attorney for revel will file the notice sometime during Business Hours this morning. This comes after a federal judge yesterday refused to let the sale go through without first considering the rights of revels former business tenant and energy supplier. The potential buyer wants the Bankruptcy Court to extend the sale deadline to february 28th but his Attorney Says revel doesnt have the right to cancel the deal. A slippery start this morning. Temperatures are in the 20s right now. And even though it has stopped raining, no more freezing rain and sleet and snow in philadelphia, theres still a lot of ice on the ground. And im still tracking some slippery conditions in delaware where we are seeing a mix of snow and freezing rain. So everybody has to deal with slippery conditions untreated surfaces with ice on them this morning. Then this afternoon well see a nice melt as temperatures climb to near 40. Well get some breaks of sunshine. But dont get used to it. Theres much colder air on the way and it will be here for the weekend. Right now 21 degrees in mount pocano. Trenton is 27. But theres the problem this morning, dover is seeing some freezing rain. Its very light. On the verge of drizzle this morning, but just enough to make it even more icy. Cloudy view from center city. The clouds are going to be staying put through the morning commute. But they will break this afternoon. Then well see where the warmer temperatures are. Theres dover with the light freezing rain that extends into southern delaware and cape may as well to see slippery conditions. Meantime, it has changed to snow in eastern maryland and central New Castle County. Salem county and portions of Gloucester County are seeing very light snowfall. This snow is falling on top of the ice. That makes for an especially slippery condition. So it is really dangerous out there on the untreated surfaces. Even though it is dry for the northern and western suburbs and into Central New Jersey that doesnt mean ice is not on the ground. So be on the lookout for slippery conditions. We will see the clouds break. We will see a warm up but its going to take most of the morning to see the temperatures climb above freezing and for the melting to begin. Looking toward the weekend, thats when the real cold will be moving in. Saturday, 25 degrees with a chance of evening snow. And then frigid air will be blowing into town on sunday with a high of just 18 degrees. We have the sevenday forecast to show you how long that lasts when im back in ten. Ten minutes after 5 00. Now it comes to the weather conditions were dealing with this morning, especially from the freezing rain and slippery spots in portions of delaware thats where you can really expect to see some slippery conditions out there. So you need to slow down and take your time. Heading down to the louisville area, we are in the midst of the area where we are seeing the freezing rain that bill has been talking about this morning. And, in fact this is what it is looking like for drivers in delaware on route 1 outside of louis. The roads are still wet, but again when you see wet conditions, you could also see ice. Hundreds of students came together to honor 18yearold karli hall who police say was killed at the hands of her boyfriend. And grace will lead me home a candlelight vigil was held a few hours after police announced the freshman from Delaware County had been beaten and strangled in her dorm room. Police got a call sunday morning from karlis boyfriend Gregorio Orrostieta says she was having a heart attack. He said he shoved karli causing her to hit her head and face but the evidence paints a more brutal picture. Injuries she suffered are far greater and more severe than a backhand slap and one push. She fought for her life. Orrostieta is charged with homicide and being held without bail. Students are starting a fundraiser to help karlis parents with funeral costs. The prosecution will continue to call Witnesses Today in the trial of a Police Officer in Gloucester County accused of falsely arresting a local politician. Washington township Police OfficerJoseph Ventura faces charges stemming from the 2012 arrest of new jersey assemblyman paul moriarity. The officer claims moriarity was driving drunk but he says he wasnt and was being targeted by a political opponent. He was charged with falsifying records and official misconduct. President obamas nominee to serve as u. S. Drug czar won unanimous approval in the republicancontrolled senate. Michael bonichelly has emphasized prevention and treatment and has been in recovery himself for more than 25 years. Hes vowing to curb the epidemic that has resulted in over 40,000 deaths a year. And back here at home, a newlyreleased report sheds light on a racially charged texting scandal within a School District. A law firm hired by the coatsville school board wrote a 200page report after the scandal in 2013. The superintendent says the report describes a culture of corruption deception and mismanagement under the leadership of the former superintendent richard como. But also points to new allegations in the last six months. James como resigned over the scandal. He is charged with stealing school funds and violating the ethics law. And a fight is underway to safe two montgomery Elementary Schools facing foreclosure. They are looking into arrowhead and audubon elementally schools. Some parents met with the superintendent yesterday to get answers on what may have to happen here. They are considering closure of the schools because of declining enrollment. Parents are worried that closing the schools will have a negative impact on their childrens education. The real issue here is what is going to happen to the kids what is going to happen to the teachers what is going to happen to their support staff. What is going to happen on their bus rides now, is it an hour long ride to another school . The school board will take Public Comments at a meeting on february 23rd. And it is 5 18. Another morning of potentially dicy conditions on the roads. So just take it easy. We still have lanes restricted on the new jersey turnpike southbound near exit 8, which is route 33. You can take route 130 to get around it. This is a live look at an accident on 295 on the northbound side as you approach 38. So past 73 approaching 38 the right lane and shoulder are blocked in that area. A lot of activity here. It is unclear how many vehicles are involved in the accident and what is happening out there, but we do have lane restrictions. From that point, you need to be aware of this. And the norristown Speed Service is suspended because of mechanical problems. And waking up and traveling 95 to center city southbound from woodhaven to the vine experts say theres a delay in the morning, but right now the drive times are looking good at 13 to 14 minutes both ways. A very slippery morning. Untreated surfaces will have ice on them this morning, even though it is stopping. Freezing rain is no longer falling from the clouds no sleet or snow in philadelphia. Delaware is a different story. 29 degrees at philadelphia. The entire region is below freezing this morning. No more freezing rain sleet or snow in the pocano mountains with the sheen on the slopes. That was taken this morning. Its a cold start this morning, so any ice on the ground is staying put right now. Right now in Gloucester County 20s in harrison township. This is the area that is starting to see a bit of snow and thats moving in from delaware across salem and Gloucester County. And its still falling in central New Castle County. Thats snow very light snow. And to the south, ice is being made. This is freezing rain in southern kent county. Sussex county and reaching into Cape May County cape may, you are cold enough for ice on the ground. So theres still a very real ice threat for this morning. But, we will see improving conditions as the day goes on. 7 00 this morning, watch the temperatures this morning. 26 degrees at 7 00. By 10 00, still frozen in philadelphia. Wilmington is up to 31 degrees. And then going into the late morning and afternoon hours, thats when the temperatures will top out in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees. So well see if the melting takes place later this morning and this afternoon. Improving conditions. Then it gets cold again tonight. So what is on the ground is refreezing. A mostly cloudy today with wet weather ending today in delaware. Temperatures climb to near 40 this afternoon. Tomorrow, well start on the cold side 44 degrees. But sunshine is going to bring us back to the upper 30s on wednesday. Well see a little bit of light snow, less than an inch in the area. A high of 38 degrees tomorrow. Here comes the cold on friday and saturday. Then much colder after some snow later on saturday. Sunday well see a High Temperature of just 18 degrees. All right, bill.
