And with all the shopping for school supplies, backpacks and uniforms, comes making sure that health forms and vaccinations are up to date. Cheryl is a Minute Clinic nurse practitioner. Shes here with more on what parents need to know. Seems like we were talking about kids heading off to camp and now its school. Yes, we were. The forms whether your kids play sports or set to go back to school. Right. Fiscal physical exams are needed at every stage of our life, especially children. From preschool to college. What parents are grappling with is getting the forms filled out. You need the right forms. Check in with the school, whether its a preschool, college, or regular School District. Make sure you have the right forms. Get them in early. Get them into a Minute Clinic. We have many Minute Clinics to get the physical exams done. People like me are going to be rushing to your clinic. I think for a lot of folks its crept up on them. Thats right. Something else we need to talk about is vaccinations. I know it varies from state to state to state. It does. So the two vaccines that are probably of most interest for schoolaged children, and you may be hearing a lot about them in the news, are both the tdap, thats the tetanus, diptheria and whopping cough and meningitis. Weve had meningitis deaths across the state of pennsylvania from kids being under immunized or never having had the vaccine. Most Children Entering School will need to have a tdapp which is different than in the past. Theyll need that at school age and also a booster as well as meningitis. Theyll need an initial shot and then a booster before they go off to college. Thats pretty much, i would imagine, consistent with some variation. Little bit of variation. Delaware and others. That is correct. Common sense things. When kids go back to school it seems as if the first few weeks every child gets sick. Right. Maybe common sense steps of washing your hands and sanitary steps. Right. I think if theres any one thing we need to tell our children is they need to wash their hands. Whats more important is washing with soap and also the friction. When you wash its the friction that actually takes the germs off your hands in addition to the soap helping you do that. So they usually just, you know, have them sing a song or something for a minute or so. With the younger children that often works, to get them to wash, wash with soap and often. Dont just put it on the hands. Exactly. You have to rub to get the germs off. You want to avoid handrails. Probably one gigantic thing we never think of is the handrails as were walking particularly in public places. Then of course we will have some days of sun in september, mid august so as a parent make sure youre applying the sun screen. 30 spf or greater. More than that in terms of spf is not getting you much bang for your buck. Drinking 10 to 20 of water so be carrying Water Bottles around with them. Cheryl, youre a fountain of information. Good to see you again. Good to see you, too. Thank you. We want to thank you. Like you said, Minute Clinics are there but these are things people need to stay on top of. Thats right. Thank you.
