Thats going to be the focus of discussion on nbcs meet the press. Joining us now for a preview is moderator of meet the press, chuck todd. Good morning, chuck. Good morning, rosemary. Chuck, earlier this week we learned about the accidental deaths of the two innocent hostages in the counterterrorism operation, targeting al qaeda. So how does this revelation now shape the conversation and debate over drone warfare . Well rosemary were still looking for the debate. I have to say, 72 hours ago, i thought we would be having a robust debate. I thought we would have president ial candidates and members of congress beating down our doors, wanting to engage in this debate and its been stunning silence. And whats been amazing about this attack is that it sort of brought to light that all the reforms president obama promised in 2013 about the Drone Program have not yet been implemented. We talked about the accidental death of the two hostages that the intelligence didnt know about, but even the al qaeda operatives that ended up being killed in these strikes, two are american citizens who sort of went to the other side and worked for al qaeda, but the cia didnt know that they were targeting them and the reason thats tricky is because there is a legal debate about can the United States target american citizens for death in this if it isnt a fully declared war and things like that . It just shows you that the cia, even though they call them signature strikes and targeted strikes, they actually didnt know who they were targeting. They just knew what they were targeting. And is that enough . And were also just wondering, wheres the debate . It hasnt shown up yet . We know youll talk about it this morning on meet the press. On a lighter note chuck, i want to talk to you about the white house Correspondents Dinner last night. Youve been to quite a few of these at this point. What did you think about the president and what did you think about Cecily Strong . I got to speak to Cecily Strong, right after she did her performance. Well have a little bit of that at the end of meet the press as well. And you can just feel the relief she had. One of the things youve got to understand about that room the washington crowd is very judgmental. Then you throw in the inebriation factor and it becomes sort of extrajudgmental. Then if youre Cecily Strong you dont you have to follow the president. And the president s funny whether hes funny or not, because everybody, you know, is going to say theth president was funny, but he was funny. You had luthor doing the anger translation of the president. But i thought she held her own. I thought there was some funny stuff in there. And what i was impressed with was just how cool as a cucumber she was. On that inebriation factor chuck, you were probably one of the few people there who had to get up this morning, right . It is. And ill tell you, that dinner with water is shall we say, a different experience than a dinner without water. Chuck todd with meet the press, thanks so much for being with us, chuck. You got it. Coming up later this morning on meet the press, you can hear more about americas drone war right here at 10 30 on nbc 10 and highlights from that white house Correspondents Dinner and that discussion with Cecily Strong.
