Its in the same spot its been in for hours. Everywhere else its moving around. Heres delaware. This is the southern portion of New Castle County right near smyrna and just north of dover. And the radar estimated rainfall 4 1 2 inches in this one spot. Just west of Seaside Heights. So about 4 inches right over there on that barrier island. Theres flooding going on reports of some water rescues as a result of all that. The other isolated showers east of cherry hill in eastern Camden County. Another one near evesham. Other cars are stranded as well nearby. Police are rescuing people from those cars. Parts of route 37 are shut down as a result. Theres also flooding in Seaside Heights. Well keep you updated. We sent a reporter to the ground. This video was shot in toms river. See how heavily its coming down and how quickly the windshield wipers have to move. If you dont have to be on the roads in that area, stay off them until the situation calms. Were going to keep monitoring this. Seems concentrated over one area. Some areas seeing a brief shower, maybe a thunderstorm. They are isolated. Nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz is tracking the storms on radar. Glenn . Yeahs its just this one area that has really gotten hit hard and you can see it on the wide view. It just draws your attention to all that white. All of the lightning that is occurring in ocean county. This is over a threehour period. And theres Seaside Heights and toms river and its just hour after hour of heavy rain and all the Lightning Strikes. You were finally seeing everything shifting a little bit to the south but it is taking a long time for that to happen. In the meantime theres a Flash Flood Warning for this area in red until 7 45. See the heaviest of the rain has now shifted south of Seaside Heights and toms river going down the island a little bit and what has happened is that different wind patterns come together. You have a little bit of a sea breeze combined with a land breeze and i think effects of other thunderstorms to the west have had an impact as well. All those things coming together and causing the storms to build right over the same spot hour after hour. And we have radar estimates of up to 4 1 2 inches of rain just in that one spot and thats just over a few hours while ten miles to the south theres very little, ten miles to the north theres very little. Well continue to monitor these storms as they change. Glenn you mentioned a Flash Flood Warning until 7 45, so 2 hours from now they could still be dealing with this. They already dealt with 4 1 2 inches there. Is the system going to be septemberered sent centered over there for the two hours do you think . Its not centered there now. Its going to take a couple hours for the water to recede. The storm, itself, is starting to shift south of Seaside Heights as we showed you on the radar, but those flooded waters dont just disappear instantly so what theyre doing is trying to warn people that over the next couple of hours you want to stay away from that area. That entire portion of eastern ocean county. We seem to be in a rainy pattern, glenn. Yesterday we were dealing with the same type of thing right around the same time of evening. Well there was a lot more activity yesterday a lot more places got rain and the thunderstorms. Today everything seems to have been concentrated right in this area. So that is the difference but the capability of some of these storms have tremendous amounts of moisture with it and today that storm had tremendous amounts of lightning and even saw some of the pictures of hail. So that was, indeed a severe thunderstorm. Wind gusts to 60 miles an hour. Plus the hail. Plus estimated of 4 to 5 inches of rain in just a few hours. All right, glenn, were going to stay on top of this thing, of course. Well check back in with you in a few minutes. Thank you very much. Now, on the tracks. This is the first look at rebuilt rail cars now running along the patco high speed line in south jersey and into philadelphia. The cars feature state of the Art Technology including new heating, cooling, and antispeeding systems. Riders will tell you they couldnt get here quickly enough and not just for the daily ride. Were now just 121 days from pope francis arrival in philadelphia. That means millions of people will be in our area just to catch a glimpse of him. That means mass transit will be put to the test. Nbc 10 south Jersey Bureau reporter cydney long talked to the head of the drp axa about patco and the pope. Are they ready . Reporter it may be the ride of a lifetime and one that has you on pins and needles to see pope francis, whether from the suburbs like here in haddonfield or even from the city i can tell you, mass transit may be the only way which is why patco higherups the countcountdown, the clock is ticking for them to make it a smooth ride. It will be a moment in history that stands still. But for the Delaware RiverPort Authority and patco high speed line standing still or any idle in service is not an option. Were spending a lot of time focusing on safety and thats why there are no concrete plans yet. Reporter patco debuted the fir 6 of 120 renovated safer modern trains today but theres no benchmark for how to prepare for some 2 million visitors that will pack the parkway and rely on all arms of Public Transit to take part in history. Im not aware of anything that is of the magnitude of what the popes visit is going to be. And thats why were being so careful in trying to figure everything out so that we dont strand anybody. Yes twice in a lifetime. Reporter brian wilson of her cherry hill was a young boy when he saw Pope John Paul in philadelphia in 1979. He wouldnt miss the chance to see pope francis in september but wont dare try to drive. Im sure theres going to be some point from the morning to late evening so maybe if they increase the routes. Reporter libby has to be there with a singing role in the pontiffs pomp and circumstance. Just to be involved in the event, so definitely villanova is excited about it. Reporter patco is in thorough talks developing plans and backup plans across the board to add routes park and ride flexibility and accessibility to their system. We have to make sure that wherever new Jersey Transit is dropping people off that theres somebody there to pick them up and vice versa. Reporter and with every focus on strategy and security patco tells me they hope to finalize their plans by midsummer. From the patco station in haddonfield, cydney long nbc 10 news. Weve been telling you about breaking news in ocean county. Route 37 fisher boulevard, toms river. Drivers drivers stranded because of all the flooding. See some of drivers on the right of your screen driving right through that water. Not pulling over in advance. Possibly they didnt know how deep that water was before driving into it. But definitely a dangerous situation at route 37. About an hour drive south of there, nbc 10s Ted Greenberg is monitoring the developments line in ventner. What does it look like there . Reporter keith, jackie, luckily here its just breezy. Havent seen any rain. A very very different story in ocean county toms river and particularly as we take a look at that Traffic Camera we have along route 37 and fisher boulevard. A very different situation. Inches of rain came down in a very short amount of time. The storm drains obviously could not keep up with it and many roads flooded. Particularly on the east side of toms river. Were talking about basically route 37 from vaughn avenue all the way east to Seaside Heights. There are multiple reports of people stuck in cars there. Those people who were stranded in their cars roads in that area and streets particularly route 37 which is a very busy road flooded. Again, this is concentrated on the eastern part of toms river into seaside. I just talked with the police chief in seaside park. He said that the Ocean County Sheriffs Department has asked for a hummer from seaside park and 5 ton high water vehicle to send to toms river to help rescue people from homes and cars. Its not just heavy rain thats been coming down. Take a look at this viewer video that an nbc 10 viewer sent us of hail pounding toms river. Ice chunks is what the driver said. Take a look at whats going on in that video. Ive also been talking with ocean county sheriff who says that Lightning Strikes have been reported in the area as well. In Seaside Heights, in ocean gate and in berkeley township. Also a 60 mile an hour wind gust in seaside park. Luckily throughout all of this terrible weather that theyve been seeing there, no reports of any injuries. Im staying in touch with my sources in ocean county and continuing to gather information as i get more detail, ill bring that to you and were also working on getting more video from the toms river and seaside areas. Reporting live, im Ted Greenberg greenberg, nbc 10 news. I know you said you spoke to the police chief. Well, i dont know if hes still there, but well try to find out for you if theyre planning on closing the road, route 37 and fisher boulevard where drivers ted did that police chief say whether or not there are any plans to close that road where all the standing water is and drivers are are continuing to drive right through it . Reporter route 37 jackie is closed eastbound and westbound in that particular area. Which basically goes from vaughn to the bridge. Were told that it especially it is shut down in the area near the mathis bridge which links toms river to the seasides. And also im told that route 35 in seaside park is under about 2 feet of water. That is also shut down. The police chief said that the amount of rain was just incredible. This is the chief in seaside park. And just flooded the road. Route 35. Thats the main drag thats over on the island. The barrier island. The barnegat peninsula which is where the seasides are. Ortley beach. So a real mess over there as well. All right, Ted Greenberg live for us. Thank you. We know you keep us updated. Now, its a stress filled rite of passage for high school students. Were talking about the s. A. T. S. Now it turns out that taking the exam isnt the most nerveracking part. Some students results actually vanished. What that means for their educational future. And not quite like a desert out there, but its close. Crops are in desperate need of rain. How hot and dry weather are hurting local farmers in many ways. Hundreds of students in virginia are penciling in an a. They have to retake the s. A. T. The tests are missing and nowhere to be found. The company that administers the s. A. T. S says they dont have them but promises to keep looking. S. A doover is scheduled for late june. One student who said she spent more than is1,000 to prep for the test fears the delay will hurt her scores. And the fact that i wasnt notified by them but i had to be notified by kids in the hallway like discussing it. The school says test officials followed proper procedures when they sent in the answer sheets by u. P. S. Well continuing to track this band of very heavy rain and thunderstorms. It was near toms river in Seaside Heights. Now its stretching down toward parts of Long Beach Island. Well give you the latest on what to expect. We continue to follow this breaking news in ocean county. Heavy rain taking its toll as you can see, this area of route 37 is not closed. Traffic is still moving. This is a live picture. Route 37 and fisher boulevard in toms river. Water standing water there on the road. Traffic is able to move through it. Nearby parts of route 37 east of vaughn avenue are flooded more than this in toms river. Several vehicles there are stranded. Others getting stranded right now. Some taking it very slowly. Other flooding taking place in Seaside Heights. Were going to continue to monitor this as we get more information. You know last nights thunderstorms, too, brought some rain to the area. They were spotty as well. Many areas havent seen any rain and those that have need more. The wait for additional rain is beginning to impact some key crops on local farms. Farmers in south jersey tell us their fields are so dry that they have to give their crops twice as much water as normal because of the summerlike conditions blueberries and strawberries are ripening faster than they should. In some cases well before the berry grows to normal size. More fruit thats on the plant, the more stress the plant is under, so right now its under the stress of producing all the berries plus now tals longing for water. It cant deal with the heat. Its a bad situation for growing anything. Farmers warn if these droughtlike conditions continue you can expect to pay more for your favorite produce. A different story right now, though. Nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz is tracking a major system bringing flash floods prompting rescues after more than 4 inches of rain dropped on the jersey shore. Glenn whats the latest . Well this is a fairly isolated event that were seeing here. It is concentrated just in ocean county in new jersey. Much of the jersey shore has not gotten a drop of rain during the day today. And wont get any tonight, either. But this one area has seen hour after hour of these thunderstorms. Now, they finally started to shift down to the south. Theres toms river. Seaside heights just to the east of that. So obviously they have moved out of the area. But the damage is done. 4 to 5 inches of rain. Well now were starting to look farther to the south. Long beach island. Right here. Theres barnegat light. So the upper portion of Long Beach Island like Harvey Cedars for example, getting pounded with the rain. So this is the area that i would like to see some Traffic Cameras. Barnegat as you can see back inland. As long as these things move you just get heavy rein and then its out of here. But if they either stall right over the same spot or keep moving over the same area then you get this kind of thing happening. This is a radar estimate. 4 to 5 inches of rain. Right over the toms river to Seaside Heights area. And right during like just a threehour period. In the meantime some of the showers in Camden County have really weakened. Some of the activity in delaware has weakened too. The Severe Thunderstorm Warnings generally about to expire. Farther to the south. Now, whats happened here we have winds coming in.
