Todays crash involved a tractortrailer the aqua driver was killed the sewage didnt spill, but the cosmetic powder did. Officials determined the powder isnt dangerous. Its apparently a substance that is utilized in the manufacturing of cosmetics. Its a smoothing agent for cosmetics. While this looks like a smaller side road, its not. This is accident alley. Neighbors say its a cut through for cars and many trucks trying to avoid the lights of ridge pike. In this case, police tell us it appears the cab of the cosmetic truck separated from the trailer. They say the trailer itself is what smashed into the aqua truck. Accident investigators trying to determine if mechanical or human error caused this. Neighbors tell me this is the worst of the many accidents theyve seen here. They hope penndot decides to somehow slow traffic down especially at this tricky spot. People dont realize how sharp of a turn it is and they go way too fast. And theyre about to shut down power to part of the road. They dont want the powder to reignite as they begin to clean it up. Were going to have an update on that coming up shortly. And penndot tell me between 2010 and 2014 there were 110 crashes between ridge pike and egypt road. The intersection, about 10,000 vehicles passing through there each day. So as you hear those numbers you can see, this is a heavily traveled road. The two run a pair of orphanages for the loving arms mission. A message on Facebook Says their families and children in the orphanages are unhurt. My son and daughter are really capable people. They can handle the situation as well as anybody can. And both will be helping other people. The aftershocks have made it too dangerous to go back into the orphanages. Seven inmates and a corrections officer are all being charged in a drug smuggling ring. Rosemary conners live to explain for us tonight. Rose mary. Reporter jacqueline and keith, according to the criminal complaint, the correctional officer would smuggle in heroin and xanax into the prison and for 100 a delivery turn them over to a middle man inmate. In total, made about 500 doing the deal. I spoke to the District Attorney here at the justice center. He tells me this is the case of a man who used to guard prisoners and may become one himself. This is somebody who did something that just betrayed the trust of the prison betrayed the trust of the criminal justice system. Mr. Keck did you smuggle drugs into the Chester County prison . Is there anything you want to say about the allegation . Anything you want to say to the community, your children . Hes a father and husband and now a suspect in a drug dealing scheme at the Chester County prison. Douglas keck worked there as a correctional officer until prosecutors say detectives learned of his plot with seven other defendants inmates and their friends on the outside. A judge arraigned keck earlier today on 75,000 unsecured bond which means hes not in jail but at home ahead of a possible trial. The Chester CountyDistrict Attorney tells me thats not necessarily surprising given that a correctional officer or c. O. Was involved. Its very hard to have a c. O. Locked up in Chester County prison awaiting trial because the inmates are not going to be happy with them and the c. O. S are not going to be happy with them. Wed have to keep them in lock down 24 hours a day. Also charged with endangering the welfare of a child. His 4yearold son whom detectives say keck brought with him to meet a coconspirator to pick up prescription drugs to smuggle into the prison. Also accused of sneaking in heroin and handing it off to a middle man inmate for distribution. Do you have anything to say for yourself . Yes, a lot of regret. Why . Now, in total, all of the defendants have been arrested and processed with the exception of that suspect, that middle man inmate. Prosecutors say that at the time the charges came down he was out of prison staying at a halfway house. He was nowhere to be found and considered a fugitive. More legal trouble for embattled Pennsylvania Attorney general Kathleen Kane after a Montgomery County judge released details of a grand jury investigation today. That report alleges kane fired a prosecutor in her office out of retaliation. Kanes lawyer says the firing was only office restructuring. A threejudge panel referred the case to the Montgomery County d. A. For investigation. A special prosecutor insists kane fired the staffer because he testified against her to a grand jury. Kanes lawyer disagrees. Doesnt look retaliatory at all. As you would see at any proceeding that steps were taken to reorganize the office to make it more effective, to make it more efficacious, to streamline the process, to make it more responsive. Kanes camp has not commented. The District Attorney also declined to comment. A stamping inside a Main Line School puts students on lockdown this morning. Police say a former cafeteria worker at the school got into an argument with a current cafeteria worker and stabbed the victim twice. Nearly a full week after the start of the penalty phase, the defense began their arguments today. The jurys deciding between life and death for dzhoknar tsarnaev. New details from boston. They got a glimpse monday in an effort to spare the life of his brother. For the first time, his motherinlaw spoke publicly about her daughters relationship with the would be bomber. Russell says she not only saw her daughter katherine become interested in islam, including covering her head but she witnessed a transformation in him, as well. Both physically as he grew out his beard and philosophically. Testifying over time he became more religious. Every time i saw him, he talked about it. She testified she texted katherine shortly after the marathon bombing. And asked her if she and her family were okay. Katherine texted she was at work with her daughter eight miles from the bombings adding as far as i know he was home in cambridge. Crawford said she found it strange that katherine texted a political statement about the bombing saying although a lot more people are killed every day in syria other places, innocent people. This at times emotional testimony came after the defenses Opening Statement in which defense attorney david brup told jurors it was your duty to vote guilty. You were required to vote guilty because the evidence proved beyond a reasonable doubt. But the Death Penalty doesnt work that way. Opening statements are underway in the trial of the accused colorado Movie Theater shooter james holmes. This comes nearly three years after the shooting that left 12 people dead and dozens injured. Jurors must decide whether holmes committed the crimes or not. Thats not what they have to decide, but whether he was sane enough at the time to be punished for them. That is their decision. Prosecutors claim holmes methodically planned and carried out his attack. The District Attorney is seeking the Death Penalty. And probably the only answer to a person who goes into a theater and shoots with a gun in an armed crowd. The defense claims holmes was in the middle of a psychotic episode when he fired into the crowded Movie Theater. And that he was unable to understand right from wrong. The jury will begin hearing testimony tuesday. Tomorrow the trial could last 4 to 5 months. You have to see this now. And those same people say its being emptied into the back bay. And its been this way for weeks. Jersey shore Bureau ReporterTed Greenberg tried to get answers today in Atlantic City. They say it comes from with a sound and odor. People who live at this Atlantic City econolodge say cell phone video shows raw sewage being pumped from a pit behind the motel into a back bay marsh. They say its been happening every other day for nearly two months. I think its disgusting. People come down in that bay, youre contaminating too many people. She says the smell got so bad yesterday, she called the police. An officer showed up at the motel on albany avenue within minutes. Tenants here claiming somebodys dumping waste into the sewage area and its making them all sick. Authorities say pumping anything into the bay is illegal. A motel employee told us we needed to talk with the manager who wasnt there. An Environmental Health inspector came to the econolodge today after i called the citys Health Department. Nothing was being pumped at that time. But he said hes launching an investigation and would notify the state department of environmental protection. The inspector said management told him a piece of equipment used to pump sewage from the pit to public sewer lines broke. A crew from that company showed up today, but their hose led to a truck, not the marsh. Health officials tell us it was the companys fourth trip to the motel this month. Residents say as the tank became full between visits it was emptied into the marsh. Its not good. Its unhealthy. I kept trying to get in touch with the Motel Manager but did not hear back from him by our deadline. Meanwhile, Health Department officials tell me a part to replace that broken equipment is supposed to be installed tomorrow. In Atlantic City im Ted Greenberg, nbc 10 news. And tonight, theres no arrest in the shooting death of a Camden High School football player. Was 18 years old and had plans to make it big in football. Today, hes being remembered by coaches and classmates as this investigation is in the beginning stages. South jersey Bureau Reporter live at Woodrow Wilson high school. Reporter both here at Woodrow Wilson high school also as camden high bullard spent a majority of his High School Career right here playing football. Also track and field at woodrow. He had only just recently transferred to Camden High School when his family moved within the city limits. He was a leader. I mean he was the oldest of his siblings and they looked up to him and he was a protector of those guys. To his teammates on the field, he was the protector or big brother. Hell be missed by his loving family and classmates at two Camden High Schools. Right now, everyones devastated. Kids are coming to me. Im doing my best to keep them on even keel. He was killed Early Saturday Morning on a walk to the store for a snack with his cousin. It happened two blocks from his own home and feet from a cousins doorstep. Where today, detectives climbed on to rooftops and searched abandoned homes for evidence or a weapon tossed after the deadly shooting. Detectives also spoke to kids at Woodrow Wilson high school. And a superintendent tells nbc 10 crisis counselors will start early and stay late for as long as necessary. A lot of students are in disbelief. Everyones trying to grasp, why . Why bullard . Untimely death, no one wants that. People are just trying to theres a lot of speculation and nothing concrete but just why. Coach Preston Brown just spoke to bullard a few weeks ago about being committed to his love of football. Browns own brother was killed on the very street where bullard took his last breath last saturday. Youll never get used to it. Never get used to it. And its a sad reality that we have to deal with in a city of camden. They dont yet have a suspect or motive in this shooting but they are working to determine if theres any connection to the death of bright another 18yearold young man shot and killed over easter weekend here in camden. Live in camden im cydney long, nbc 10 news. A mother of four in philadelphia faces charges after police say she locked her kids in a basement for 12 hours. As punishment. 29yearold lee was arrested sunday after police found her 9, 10, 12 and 13yearolds locked in a basement of a kensington home. The two boys and girls lived on east atlantic street. Their mother told them to grab their mattresses and take them to the basement. No access to food and water. One of the children had a cell phone that only dialed 911, and thats how they were able to call police. Lee faces several charges including child endangerment. Jurors in new york are in their ninth day of deliberations to the Etan Patz Murder trial. Pedro hernandez is accused of killing patz in 1979. Patz was 6 years old at the time of his disappearance. Became one of the first missing children featured on milk cartons. Hernandez confessed three years ago, but his lawyers say his admission came from quote, a mentally ill man with a low iq. We have new information about a deadly wrong way crash in new york that killed a new Jersey Police officer and another man. Toxicology results show the offduty officer behind the wheel was drunk. Tests show his blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit during the march 20th crash. Police say he slammed headon into a tractortrailer after leaving a Staten Island strip club. He and his friend died. Prosecutors would not commend on whether he will face charges. Its been another difficult day for the new owner of the revel casino. New jerseys Gaming Enforcement Division says he cannot simply assume revels casino license. The state needs to approve him for his own license to operate a casino. The casino went dark earlier this month after he could not come to an agreement with the utility company. Power is expected back later this week. The school shut its doors friday. Parents say they were given no warning. Around 100 families are affected. They say finding a new school in a few days is not enough time and itll be a major adjustment for the young children. She loved her friends and teachers. And so now well have to start all over again. Hundreds packed a Baltimore Church to say final farewells to freddy gray and call for justice in his death. Freddys death is not in vain. After this day, we going to keep on marching. After this day, we going to keep demanding justice. The attorney called on the community to tear down what he called the blue wall of justice. Peacefully. You know, most of us are not here because we knew freddy gray. But were all here because we know lots of freddy grays. While gray was laid to rest, there were fears of unrest following scattered acts of violence and 30 arrests in large and largely peaceful protest on saturday. The gray family joined baltimore officials in calling for peace as Police Continue their investigation. Gray died of a spinal cord injury after being arrested by police. Officials say it may be early next month before the investigation is complete. While mourners were paying their respects Baltimore Police revealed what they called a credible threat. Rival gangs like the crips, bloods and others they say have entered into a pact to quote, unquote, take out officers on the street. And that wind overnight tonight will lighten up a bit. The one thing youre going to notice are the clouds starting to break up. Still breezy temperatures upper 50s 58 degrees philadelphia 56 in allentown, 55 degrees in redding, 60 northeast philly and still cool for this time of the day and tonight and the clouds that you see around those are really helping to keep us a little cooler. But we dont have any rain with any of these clouds. Any rain is a little farther to our north. And also very far to our south. So thats the area when i mentioned coastal storm, thats the area were watching in the gulf of mexico right now. Eventually itll track up the eastern seaboard and become a coastal storm. So for parts of the east coast, we will be seeing rain as we go into the end of the week. So heres a look at future rain. Tonight, we stay dry, tomorrow we stay dry, wednesday, we stay dry, and wednesday, thats going to be the warmest day, low 70s nice day, we expect sunshine. And then the rain starts to move up. Theres that area of low pressure off the coast. So this could be a noreaster for the carolinas or could be a noreaster for us. It really depends how far north it moves. As we go through the next couple of the days well have more details as the models get a little better handle on it. So for thursday and friday well be watching that for rain in the forecast and we go into the weekend and that storm moves away and hits us up nicely for saturday and sunday with temperatures warming back up again. And now High School Students in oklahoma have invented a football helmet that drastically reduces impact. The new helmet looks a little bit different. Weighs about 3 pounds. Thats compared to a regular helmet which weighs about 4. Its also made with carbon fiber fabric. The students built a helmet that reduces impact by 70 . An improved helmet would help people not to worry so much. Help moms not to worry about their kids going into football. The students will show off their prototype helmet at a National Competition this summer. And last week a federal judge in philadelphia gave final approval to a plan to settle thousands of concussion lawsuits. Now, the lawsuits accuse the league of hiding what it knew about concussion risks. Well, the nfl denies the claims. The settlement could end up costing the league 1 billion. We are monitoring a tense and volatile situation on the streets of baltimore tonight. These are live pictures from that city where protesters have violently attacked police set cars on fire and looted local businesses. This all started late this afternoon when a large crowd confronted police and began throwing bricks and rocks at officers. At least seven were hurt. Police say one of those officers was unresponsive. A short time later. Look at this a Police Car Set on fire. Then crowds of people began looting local businesses. The violent and destructive protests have spread to other parts of the city and police have stepped up security outside camden yards where fans are showing up for tonights orioles game. Now tonight, this all comes on the same day as freddy grays funeral took place. Now, freddy gray died just more than a week ago after suffering a mysterious final injury while in police custody. His death sparked more violent protests. Just over this past weekend. And today, police said they believed three gangs are now working to quote, take out Law Enforcement officers. The department called this a credible threat. But would not say if its related to freddy grays death. We will keep an eye on these protests. You see the line there, of police.
