Flu season begins, and this years flu vaccine may not protect against the common form of the virus, h3n2 strain of the flu which is causing much of the early cases mutated into a version not included in the vaccine. Nbc 10 reached out to dr. Ronald goran to find out what this means for you and your family. Hes an Infectious Disease specialist at naserith hospital. Thanks for being with us. My pleasure. What does this mean . It naturally raises alarms for people when they hear this. If someones already gotten this vaccine, which many have, should they be worried . Well, it would be nice if the vaccine was more specific for this years flu, however, the way they make the vaccine they pick it up, do it in february based on last years vaccine in order to make sure we have enough for this season, and every once in a while you dont get a good match because the flu virus changes. However, we all have a little bit of antibody to the flu, and crossreactivity will occur so you will get some protection. And even if its not 14ur00 , theres a good chance if you get the flu youll have a milder illness and youre less likely to be hospitalized or get a pneumonia. Furthermore, two other strains that circulate, h1n1 and the b strain and youll be protected against those as well. Theres absolutely every reason for people not to worry about having gotten it and make sure they continue to get their flu vaccine if they havent been vaccinated. This isnt the first time this has happened. Viruses are notorious for this. A lot of people watching this might think, why dont they go ahead and make a new vaccine . Is that possible . Not at this time of year. It takes a while to grow the vak ve vaccine, get it to production, make sure the quality is right and get it out to everybody. We wouldnt have time this year to do that. We cant enforce it enough, if you havent received flu shot yet, this should not stop you from getting it because it can prevent you from getting more serious cases. Absolutely. Even pneumonia. Absolutely. Just reminder to everybody, the flu vaccine does not cause flu. I urge all pregnant women to get it. I like to say this every time, its very important. Theyre much more susceptible than the average person is, and they really it wont harm anything. Wont harm the baby. They should get the vaccine. We cant hear that number. Thank you for being with us.
