They are warning people that something as simple as a cigarette toss out of your window or a cars catalytic converter could spark a major brush fire. Theyre asking people as they heat up their barbecue grills during nice weather to play it safe. Sky force 10 overhead as massive flames burn. New jersey forest fire officials believe some five fires may have been set intentionally on whats considered a red flag warning day. It means as temperatures rise and winds pick up humidity drops. The fires are being investigated as suspicious. Just pray to god that nothing gets any worse than it is. Red hot flames spark up near route 70. Fire investigators considered this the largest of the fires burning scorching up 45 acres of 80 right now burning. The closest neighborhood, the country lake subdivision is two miles away. Right now, were comfortable. Theres no structures threatened. But we are concerned about motorists on the road just being careful. Firefighters working. Firefighters working along the roadside. Theres a lot of smoke on the road. Can you send one more truck over here . Brush truck crews are attacking the flames both on the ground by setting backfires and from high above drawing water from lakes in the region. As those fuels become more conducive to burning, the fire will spread quicker. Also driven by wind it will all contribute to increased fires spread. Retired new york firefighter is confident crews will keep him safe from the flames. Of course. I wish i could do it now. Right now, you can see the shoulder is closed so firefighters can continue to watch for the flare u. Sky force 10 found another brush fire burning this afternoon. This time in philadelphias cobbs creek neighborhood. This is in a wooded area near the cobbs creek golf course. Lets talk more now about the weather conditions and the role they play in the fire danger. Glenn hurricane schwartz is here to explain it now. When we have a risk of fires increased by the conditions in the atmosphere the National WeatherService Issues a red flag warning. This case until 8 00 tonight, all of new jersey all of eastern pennsylvania. And what it means is that there is an increased risk of fires developing and spreading the very dry ground plus the low humidity plus the gusty winds, those are the ideal conditions for fires to spread. We p want to warn people about it. The wind has certainly picked up this afternoon. It was very light this morning, but the gusts are over 20 miles an hour still in much of the area. It will diminish after sunset tonight. Were in the low to mid80s across much of the area. Right at the beaches its cooler, but a warm day out there and its going to be a warm night, as well. The breezes will be dying down. So by 10 00, not much wind at all. We are tracking thunderstorms and one day of cooler weather with the 7day in a few minutes. Thank you, glenn. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with new information about the Lehigh Valley mother accused of throwing her baby son off this bridge before jumping in herself. What im being told is the mother is directly under the bridge. And we have no eyes on the baby. Nbc 10 obtained the police radio transmissions as officers responded to the scene in allentown. Both mother and baby survived. Rescuers pulled them from the waters there. Live on the scene of the incident is nbc 10s doug shimell. And you talked to someone who saw this all happen. Tell us about that. Yeah everybody from that witness to the police or rescuers out here are still trying to figure out how a mother could do this. Over the lehigh closer to front street a female jumped off the bridge with an infant. The police radio call didnt seem real and the people fishing under the hamilton street bridge sunday in allentown were in disbelief. They said a mom threw her son over the bridge. Investigators say perry threw her 1yearold son into the lehigh river and jumped over, as well. Unconscious with a laceration to her head. No location of the baby. Initially, rescuers couldnt find the boy and adriana says police asked her and others for help. And the cops came out out of breath. And hes like we need everybodys help to look for a baby in the river. They have recovered the child. An Allentown Police officer eventually found the boy unconscious in Shallow Water a short distance down river and performed cpr. It has bothered adriana who also has a young son ever since. It breaks my heart. I always does. If they cant be a mom, take the easy way out, take it to someone who can help them, not hurt it. Well police say the little boy is still in Critical Condition in the hospital. His mother is in jail tonight, facing attempted murder charges. Live in allentown, doug shimell, nbc 10 news. Sky force 10 over a house fire in camden today. The home went up in flames around 12 00. No one was hurt. Investigators still trying to figure out what started that fire. All right. A father who pleaded guilty after his daughter was found to have rotten teeth now says he did not neglect her. Police say the 6yearolds teeth were so infected that her life was actually at risk. Kenneth wannamaker says he wants the judge to toss out his guilty plea. Well, a home surveillance camera caught a burglar in the act in fishtown. Police are hoping you can help identify this intruder. To a developing story now, fbi agents and police today are still on the scene of a deadly shootout in texas. Began when two men opened fire with assault rifles in an event showcasing cartoons of the prophet mohammed. There are indications that one of the men may have ties to terrorist activities. The streets around the complex are closed as well as police and federal investigators continue their investigation into the attack last night. Police say the shootout lasted no more than 15 seconds after the alleged gunmen jumped out of their vehicle and opened fire. They simply got out and started firing. Wounding an Armed Security guard and then turned toward police. Came around the back of the car and started shooting at the police car. The traffic Patrol Officer inside that cruiser fired back killing the suspects. The officer was using his duty pistol. They were using assault rifles. At this point, investigators say theyre not sure of a motive. We think their strategy was to get to the Events Center, into the Events Center. Where the inaugural mohammed art exhibit contest was coming to an end. The event included a competition with a 10,000 prize for the winning cartoon featuring the muslim prophet mohammed. Images that are considered blasphemous. We all knew there was a chance something bad may happen. So youve got all this pollen around. And theres no rain to wash it out of the air. So its pretty high. And a lot of people are suffering. It is expected to go down a little tomorrow and especially on wednesday with some rain coming in. But not everybodys necessarily going to see rain out of this. And it goes right back up on thursday and may get very high by next weekend. Theres the southwest wind flow. The sustained winds that were down below 5 miles an hour this morning. It seems we skipped right over spring right to summer. Yeah a lot of people like spring, too. Yeah. And just about ten days ago, we were in the 50s in the afternoon, and now, were getting closer to 90 degrees. Yeah, it feels like baseball season out there. But it is pretty hot. Its 85 degrees in philadelphia. 86 in redding, 85 in northeast philly, 84 in dover. The only place that is cooler is right at the beaches where it is in the 60s at the jersey shore. The southwest wind continues to warm things up. Its getting a little bit stronger out there. 10 to 20 miles an hour. And that stronger wind is helping to fuel the fire danger. And thats why the red flag warning is out until 8 00 for all of that area because we do see that increased wind that enhances that fire danger along with the very dry ground and the low humidity. Well the past winter was a costly one according to a survey out today. States throughout the country spent more than 1 billion to clear snow and ice off highways. And were tracking some thunderstorms coming in within the next 24 hours. Got a lot of blue out in that sky. And the wind, thats picking up. 18 gusting to 24 miles an hour. 85 degrees, relative humidity way down there at 21 . Thats one of the ingredients because of the that causes the red flag warning. Were in the low to mid80s across much of the area. But the one exception, of course, is right at the beaches. Especially the jersey shore because of the way the wind direction is. Were seeing temperatures in the 60s, and we saw that yesterday, as well 65 in avalon 66 in beach haven while its in the 80s inland. Its 82 degrees in delaware the southwest wind is a land breeze for the delaware beaches. Theres the red flag warning until 8 00 p. M. For all of new jersey all of eastern pennsylvania. The conditions favorable for a quick spread of any kind of fires. But this front may put at least a brief interruption into that issue. Theres not a whole lot of moisture with it as you can see now. The Severe Threat tracker for tomorrow is pretty low for just about any kind of severe issues. The high wind being the highest threat. Weve got that warm weather with the southwest wind and here comes some of those showers tomorrow. Maybe even a thunderstorm. And then the wind shifts into the northwest. And theres wednesday morning, we may still have a few showers around. As a weather officer, Nicole Mitchell flies into the storms to gauge conditions and gather information that helps make forecasts more accurate. Even in a season where theres not a lot of storms it only takes one big one to have a devastating year. The National Hurricane center will be using a watch and warning graphic to highlight areas most at risk for life threatening storm surge. Which caused much of the damage from sandy. Weve learned that we have to ramp up our ability to communicate and educate on the storm surge hazard. And its going to be so much more clear for the public to see if theyre at risk.
