A gas line break in Egg Harbor Township. In order to fix it they have to reroute traffic there. Nbc 10 Jersey Shore Bureau reporter Ted Greenberg arrived within the past half hour. How long are they expecting these repairs to take . Well theres no telling right now. Thats what the fire chief told me a short time ago, jim and renee. We are at the intersection of rega avenue and briar cliff drive. This is on the border of Egg Harbor Township and hamilton township. This situation has been going on for about three hours now. I can tell you, the odor of natural gas is extremely strong here as well. Heres the reason why. Around 1 00 this afternoon a contractor accidentally drilled into a 6 inch gas distribution line on rega avenue. Within the last 15 minutes south Jersey Gas Company crews were able to stop the flow of gas from that damaged pipe. Now, officials tell me there have been no Service Outages to customers in this area. And they dont anticipate any. Thats certainly good news for all the people who live in several housing complexes in this area. There are many developments in the area where we are. And they certainly will be happy to learn from the gas company that they dont anticipate any Service Outages this evening or later on tonight. So they can keep their heat on. However, drivers within a few miles of this scene have been greatly impacted. We talked with Egg Harbor Townships fire chief just a few minutes ago. The impact here is just a traffic disaster. We got hit at a time of the day when i have two large school back here to get 30 school buss apiece in and out. They go through this area that we had to detour getting the kids home from school to these developments as you see here which is surrounded by. And this is a major artery for the people coming off the black hurst pike from the shopping malls coming back into Egg Harbor Township. Reporter the fire chief tells me these detours could remain in place for several more hours this evening. Luckily, no evacuations and no reports of any injuries. Nbc 10 got a birds eye look at the conditions on folkstone road in wilmington this morning. Road crews still have their work cut out for them long after the storm has passed. Nbc 10s Deanna Durante has been checking out the side roads all over our area. Shes live on board storm force 10. What kind of progress are they making . They seem to be making a lot of progress here in bridgeport, take a lack at the roads here were on ford street heading towards 4th street in bridgeport, just across the river from norristown. This is a main road its fairly clear but if we go up one of the steep hills in the borough, the residue of a lot of salt. I talked to the borough manager a little while ago. His eight crews have been working tirelessly throughout the last 24 hours to try and get these roads clear. However, some places in our area, theres still a lot of frustration. Most of the big roads arent terrible but some of the side roads are pretty snowy and icy. Reporter for some drivers, a bit of frustration, nearly 24 hours after the snow has ended. This is a hill i would take my time coming out. I going to take time going up and downhills. The blocks around here are a little bit smaller. Reporter for others they dont expect what they never had. I think its difficult for the trucks to get around. I live in a culdesac street. Its never, ever done. Reporter when it comes to the long hills and narrow streets in roxborough and manayunk the Streets Department says be patient, they are working on it. The challenge were running into now, the temperatures are starting to drop. Reporter we spotted city crews salting today. And lorenz says its not a miracle. The perron you run into when it gets into the colder weather, the salt takes longer to activate with the sun and the snow. Reporter now take a look at this hill here as we drive down the hill here in bridgeport you can see that theres still quite a bit of wet patches here. Again, crews are hoping that as long as the sun stays out, it will help to get the roads dry. Theyre also counting on the heavy wind gusts to help dry off the roads as well. But still many problem areas out there. And crews are going to be working through the night all over the area to try and control icy spots or black ice. One of the women claims cosby invited her backstage in 1981. The woman said cosby drugged her before putting her in a dark room and forcefully kissing her. I was an early 20s young woman, a little star struck and naive. He had suggested i asked for it. I meant to prove i had not asked for anything. Two of the women claim cosby assaulted them in the early 80s the other woman says her encounter happened in the early 90s. Allred blasted the woman who played cosbys tv wife for years, actress felicia rashad. She said the Sexual Assault accusations are part of an orchestrated Smear Campaign to keep cosby off television. We now know the man behind the wheel of the jaguar that night is in his mid40s, his name is leroy tut. He was not hurt that evening and he is not known in this community. We found out today that while he was questioned the night of that shooting he was not booked into jail by either Bridgeton Police or the county jail. This as mourners in this community are still searching for answers. I want to know why. Why did he have to die . Reporter shes known reed for seven years. He had text me and called me a few hours before he got killed. Reporter shes one of many in bridgeton anxious for answers as to what prompted the police car stop of reed the night of december 30th. It happened near south and henry in bridgeton where she and her mother relit candles today. She wants to know did he waive or point a gun at authorities . All questions Bridgeton Police and prosecutors have not yet answered. Everybody around here in this neighborhood and this community can tell you that rahim, one of the cops that shot him has harassed people. Hes kicked in peoples doors. Reporter bridgetons chief of police wouldnt speak on camera today. He did confirm, though both officers day and worley involved in the shooting are on paid leave. They both had complaints lodged against them that were thrown out. Tut, the man driving the car at the time reed was killed was, too, jailed in june in 2011 for failure to appear in court on a revoked license. And the Bridgeton Police chief also tells me he wont necessarily step up patrols tonight but they are aware of tze vigil. Because of this cold some local school kids got a late start to school. Doug shimell live this afternoon in east falls. Doug, that school delay was all in the interest of student safety . Reporter yes, it was in the Philadelphia School districts and in theory when you send the kids to school a few hours later, it means it will be a little bit warmer. This morning that meant going from 8 degrees to 12 degrees. A twohour delay sort of helped. We came to school late today. When we come out early in the morning its real cold. I have to wake up at 6 30 to get to school. Reporter getting to school through this is not fun in the suburbs or the city. I come from south philly all the way up here. Yes, its a little walk and its cold. Reporter how are you doing right now . It looks like your face is frozen. I cant feel my fingers 0 toes. Reporter the Philadelphia School district knows that and tries to confirm that septa and the yellow buss are checked and running and make sure students have on something warm. Make sure theyre wearing jackets and have hats and gloves. Believe it or not, in some situations our schools, principals and teachers are ready to provide a student with something if they dont have it. Reporter once they get to one of philadelphias aging School Buildings after the long walk and bus or train ride is the heat even on . That actually has happened this week. Weve had frozen pipes, a situation with boilers in schools. Reporter most of the time it is. When you are sitting in class, when you get get there, you be cold. By the time Second Period comes you be warm. Reporter a spokesperson for the Philadelphia School district says because there are so many Old Buildings with stone and plaster walls, eventually all this cold radiates through the walls and into the classroom no matter what the thermostat says. Yes its going to get colder and feel colder each hour as we go through the evening. You dont just want to cover your body. You have to cover the head too. A lot of heat leaves through the head and the ears can be very much exposed to dangerous frostbite. Frigid winds, 40 miles an hour is what weve had today. That makes it dangerous cold when you combine that with the temperature and makes it feel like its below zero. These are the flags blowing at the aramark center. Thats certainly not helping things out. The temperature today didnt even reach 25. Its already down to 20. A 20 mileanhour wind feels like 4 in philadelphia right now. And in a few hours it will be feeling like its below zero. And right now, the temperature is in the 20s. At best. Low 20s. Teens, north and west. And the wind gusts, straight out of the west. And its pretty strong 30 to 35 miles an hour 36 in allentown and wilmington. It was gusting to 41 in dover, just an hour ago. So it is still very windy and look at these wind chills. We found this homeowner in ardmore, Montgomery County salting his now iced over driveway. And depending on where you are you could see snow this afternoon. Glenn, the real extreme here that youre stressing is that the cold weather compounded by those winds is going to make it really rough out there. The wind does have an effect on the exposed skin. And if you combine the temperature and the wind and we call that the wind chill or it feels like temperature, that is the equivalent of lets say, if a wind chill is 10 below, the equivalent of a 10 below temperature with zero wind. So we have a first alert weather day because of these wind gusts to 40, creating a dangerous cold. The wind chill is below zero and thats going to last all the way into tomorrow morning. Temperatures are in the teens, north and west. Down to 20 in philadelphia with a brief snow shower and the warm spot only 23 degrees. A man accused in a deadly shooting at the pennsylvania Municipal Building is suing the jail where hes staying. Rockne newell is demanding that the Monroe County correctional facility provide him special dietary foods. He says the high starch foods cause wild mood and energy swings. Newell as you recall is charged with the shooting deaths of three people at the ross township Municipal Building in 2013. New information this afternoon about a new Jersey High School Football Program rocked by a hazing scanned. Football will return next year at sayrevilles war memorial high school. The superintendent canceled the 2014 season days before seven players were accused of hazing and sexually assaulting teammates inside the locker room. A judge is deciding is waiting to decide whether a former janitor will pay restitution for smoking inside a Central New Jersey school and starting this fire. Jerome hig inwas fined 200 for the incident at James Madison Elementary School in edison last march. The judge delayed making a decision over restitution because of pending lawsuits involving the School District and its insurance company. Students at three pennsylvania Elementary Schools ate rice with a side of bugs for lunch. Take a look at this tiny brown weevil. The bugs were found in the rice served to dozens of students in the west allegheny School District. Health Department Officials say the bugs are not harmful when you eat them and theyre immediately killed during cooking but the news didnt sit well with some parents, understandably. Police charged the driver Michael Adler for failing to stop for a school bus. The boy was trying to cross the street when the car hit him and drug him some 80 feet through the intersection.
