The district may not get a funding boost from a proposed 2 cigarette tax as soon as it was hoping. In an unexpected move, the Senate Passed an amended version of the bill by a 435 vote, sending it back to the house where lawmakers are now in summer recess. Nbc 10s keith jones talked to city leaders tonight about what this means for the district. Reporter its certainly not good. Philly schools are missing out on 1. 6 million for every week that this bill isnt signed into law. I spoke with mayor Michael Nutter on the phone tonight as he drove back from the capitol. The state senate amended the 2 per pack tax by adding a sunset provision, essentially that means the tax and added revenue to the city schools would end in five years. Remember, philly schools are counting on this tax for 45 million this year and 83 million by this time next year. Heres the catch. The bill now goes back to the house which is in recess. The next scheduled session, midseptember. This is obviously troubling to mayor nutter. Its unfair to our children, unfair to our teachers, unfair for parents, and taxpayers of philadelphia are caught in a bit of a political pingpong match. Reporter without this tax revenue, mayor nutter says he doesnt think city schools will open on time. Superintendent william hite released a statement saying in part, adding the sunset provision to end the bill in five years removes urgently needed recurring revenue which is extremely troubling given our 93 million deficit and the persistent increases in the districts fixed costs. Looking ahead, mayor nutter and city officials are going to urge House Majority leaders and House Speaker to timely approve this bill to get it in front of governor tom corbetts desk. It really has cooled temperatures down. 74 degrees right now in philadelphia. Through the lehigh valley, just about the low 70s. As you wake up tomorrow morning, it will be another warm and humid start to your day. So future weather here pretty much pushes the rain offshore like its supposed to. As we start off our day, notice a little more cloud cover, then some thunderstorms as we go through the afternoon, we still have a chance of that. Then on thursday, we start to see things dry up a little bit. So less humidity as we go into the day on thursday. But until then, we have to get through the heat and the storms. As far as our shore points are concerned, tomorrow, chance of thunderstorms. Rest of the week doesnt look too bad. For tonight, though, storms continue to clear. We could see a chance of a couple lingering showers still. About the mid 70s in philadelphia. Tomorrow, hot and humid. Chance of thunderstorms around the area. Temperatures will be right around 90 degrees tomorrow. So, again, if we hit that, that is heatwave number two. Then as we go into thursday, were in the upper 80s. On friday, looks pretty good to end out the week. 87 degrees. Looks like we stay dry even starting the weekend, but then as we go into sunday, thats when we have our next chance for thunderstorms. But so far, for the rest of this evening, we have the storms along our shore points and in delaware. But those are going to continue to clear out. Yeah, rough night for a lot of people.
