Diabetes is like a serpent inside your body, eating away at you, rusting away the tubes of your body. Plus. A former miss america faces lifealtering possibilities. I was told that i would never have children because i have diabetes. And how to trick your taste buds into eating healthy. It may be everyday food, but its different. The way it tastes is something youve never had before. My generation is made possible by. The hartford. More information about our programs for drivers 50 and over, including how to find an agent, is available at hartfordautoinsurance. Com for you. Or someone you love, for care in the home, were here. Interim healthcare. When it matters most, count on us. The 5star responder by greatcall. One touch lets you speak with trained agents who will identify you and your location and get you the help you need. And eharmony. Love begins here. Hi and thanks for joining us. Im leeza gibbons. Are you sitting down . If youre like most americans, the answer is probably yes. There may even be a snack nearby. We hear it all the time were eating too much, were not moving enough. And now were facing some serious, lifethreatening consequences. The center for Disease Control predicts that one in every 3 americans will become diabetic by 2030 if we dont change our ways. Could what you eat and how you live lead to an early death . Thats the bittersweet question in the diabetes dilemma. Millions of americans have diabetes, and worse, many have it and dont know it. My generations andy field sat down with a woman who thought it could never happen to her. Andy then made an appointment with worldrenowned heart surgeon dr. Oz to find out what everyone should know about the disease. It wasnt just a spoonful of sugar that nearly killed glenda ford. Diabetic symptoms crept up on her until a nurse finally tested her blood sugar. He tells the nurse to take my fasting blood sugar, and when she read it, she screamed. She said, oh its 451 but i still dont know what 451 means in the scope of things, and at that point, i started crying. I was like, oh, no, because all these voices kept saying, oh, youre catching it early. Youre gonna be on pills. Theyre gonna control it by diet, and here i wasit was so severe that all of a sudden, im on insulin. Im like, i cant take this. This is the one i screened it. I didnt think i could ever do this, but. I had to do a finger prick on my finger 5 times a day. So all of a sudden, i flipped and i entered a new world. I was now diabetic. Before that, glenda never gave diabetes a second thought. Heart surgeon and Television Host dr. Mehmet oz says too many of us think that. Because we tend to treat it like its a little sugar, right . Its not a big deal. A lot of people have diabetes. Whats the problem with a little sugar in your blood . So diabetes is not just a little sugar. Diabetes is like a serpent inside your body, eating away at you, rusting away the tubes of your body. If you dont think it in those aggressive terms, that that should scare you a little bit, you wont take it seriously. Thats what we have to start doing in america. And dr. Oz created an eyepopping animation explaining just how diabetes can rip through our arteries and kill. When you eat a food, especially if its a simple carbohydrate, it goes into your stomach, and heres an image of your stomach with the liver right above it, and the gall bladders that green structure. The food passes into the small bowel and it mixes with bile, which acts like a soap to wash the food, allowing you to absorb it more readily across the wall of the intestine. Goes up into the portal vein towards the liver and gets into the bloodstream. Here in the bloodstream, youve got red cells. Those yellow things are pieces of insulin. Theyve been stimulated by the pancreas and released. Now, the nutrients that we take in can come in many forms. The blue dots here are sugar. If you have the normal metabolism, insulin takes that sugar out of your bloodstream, but if you get obesity, especially belly obesity, see here getting larger, the insulin no longer works the way its supposed to. Your body gets resistant to it. The sugar builds up and it starts to affect major vessels, like in the heart. Here is the major blood vessel in the front of the heart and that little plaque starts in a young person, but that plaque gets larger and larger and gets irritable, especially when you have lots of sugar hanging around, like in diabetes, when one day, all of a sudden, oh, it just ruptured. When that ruptured plaque occurs, the body wants to heal it. It does it with those purplish platelets. It has [indistinct] to it and they form a blood clot over an open sore in the blood vessel, and then kaboom right there, you saw the leading cause of death. When glenda discovered a lousy diet and virtually no exercise was killing her, she changed everything. 2 bring it up keeping still almost killed me, so i move a lot now. Im constantly on the go. If i have my grandkids, were going for a walk. Were going a mile walk and were walking down to the playground. Were walking back. Were walking to the mall. Were walking back. And relearning how to eat was glendas biggest challenge. Carb counting, starch sleuthing, blood, site, and urine testing. Glendas new life now comes with a daily preflight checklist. Before, it was salad with everything on it and thinking, because this is not fat food, im doing real good. In the beginning people are often confused and overwhelmed because theres a lot to learn about diabetes, and the First Step TowardsHealthy Eating is getting them to do the healthy plate. Go 4, 3, 2, top front its likely glendas new life would get the dr. Oz seal of approval. One of the scariest things about diabetes and prediabetes is youll have a long time before it will start to show it and rear its ugly head. You wont realize you got complications related to it until youre exhausted all the time, till you cant see so well, till you cant sleep well, until youre urinating continually. Those things tend to remind you that you got a problem, but if you dont Pay Attention to those items, like why youre exhausted, you wont diagnose it in a timely fashion. So by the time i as a heart surgeon diagnose you, im taking you to the operating room. Im gonna take a band saw to your chest. Its a little late in the game to figure it out. So glendas working with a nutritionist, her doctors, taking insulin, cooking right, moving, and shes telling her children to get tested very young, something dr. Oz wishes wed all do. Every american by age 20 ought to know what their blood sugar is while theyre fasting, which means after not having eaten over the evening. What does your blood sugar sort of stabilize out at . Certainly by age 35, it ought to be rechecked. If youre overweight, and by that i mean specifically having a waist size more than half your height, or if you have any other complications potentially related to heart disease, like high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, you must know your blood sugar numbers. For glenda, that diabetes wakeup call came nearly too late, and she wants to help others learn how to prevent or control it. Keep thinking if it can happen to me, it can happen to anybody, and its not anything to joke with. Its serious, so ive definitely changed. Im not the same person i was before i was diagnosed. I never will be that person again. In baltimore, maryland, im andy field for my generation. And one more important note. Did you know a visit to your dentist can catch the onset of diabetes . Things like tooth decay and bad breath can be telltale signs of the disease. For information on how to prevent and control diabetes, visit our web site at mygeneration. Org. Later, a chef who can sweettalk your sweet tooth out of craving sugar. Its basically a cheesecake with Red Velvet Cake, except its actually good for you. When this former miss america was diagnosed with diabetes, she already knew a thing or two about the disease because of her family history. But instead of letting the news tarnish her crown, she turned the obstacle into opportunities. The first runnerup is miss North Carolina kelli bradshaw. Miss virginiaNicole Johnson is miss america 1999. [crowd cheering] with this crowning moment, the st. Petersburg, florida native gave a voice to those living with diabetes. There she is, miss america we all face somebody in our lives whos saying, you cant, you shouldnt, you couldnt. The measure of a person is what is your answer to that . My answer was obstacle is opportunity. Laura Nicole Johnson was diagnosed with type 1, also known as juvenile diabetes, in 1993 while in college, but she was misdiagnosed many times before that and was about to have her healthy appendix removed. Someone noticed my blood sugar and it was over 500, and immediately given insulin, and i started to recover, but at least at that time, it seemed like a death sentence. It was like the world is ending, you know. It was very, very hard. Once nicole adjusted to the news, the College Sophomore reflected on all the things she was told she couldnt do, like graduate from college, work in journalism, or enter another pageant. Then came the most painful news. I was told that i would never have children because i have diabetes. Despite what doctors initially told nicole, she continued entering, and winning, pageants. That gave her the platform to talk to anyone who would listen about her condition. One of the most inspirational stories centers around her crown, which became damaged from all the miss america travel. When she spoke to students about overcoming obstacles, one of them asked to fix the seemingly unrepairable tiara. She bent two paperclips to hold it together. When i asked her how and why she did this, she told me she did it because the challenge wasnt bigger than she is. This young woman did that. She didnt have hands to bend these paperclips, so she understood challenge, and she understood adversity, and yet she also understood hope and opportunity and giving to other people. And thats what makes this today far more beautiful than it ever has been. Like the student with no hands defied the odds, nicole defied diagnosing doctors by finishing college, even though they told her she wouldnt have the mental capacity to do so. They couldnt have been more wrong. She has a bachelors degree, two masters, and is studying for her doctorate in public health. Oh, and she worked in journalism, just like she wanted. The doctors were wrong about that, too. Nicole became the awardwinning host of a tv show for and about people with diabetes. She also became an author, telling her own story and writing cookbooks. I need you to help me with the bread, and were not. Cooking became a Family Affair postdiagnosis. Now 20 years later, its an occasional treat, with nicole, her nowdivorced parents, and daughter ava getting together for a meal. Thats right nicole is a mother. Just one more couldnt nicole shows diabetics they absolutely can do. Nicoles dad george takes stock of what he eats these days because he was diagnosed with diabetes in 2009 type 2, which often happens later in life to those overweight and or unfit. The challenge for us in our different ways of dealing with diabetes is i dont have a love of food like my father does. Food, to me, feels like the enemy. But to my dad, a meal is a big deal. She gives me a lot of advice. I think, unfortunately sometimes, i dont take it very well. Nicoles momemily lloyd became prediabetic after retirement. And so i wasnt as active, and i started gaining weight, and my daughter said to me one day, mom, you realize youre gaining all this weight in the middle of your body, which i had never done before, and i said, i am . And she said, yes. You need to get tested. Young ava doesnt have diabetes, but it doesnt mean she wont someday. What would be your greatest fear about your daughter getting it . Um, the pain. And the depression. People dont often talk about it, but its very difficult psychologically and emotionally. A mothers fear doesnt skip generations. I still worry about her, and i worry about my son, because hes been tested, and i guess he has that gene, and my granddaughter. Poppy and ava know the importance of regular exercise is another way of keeping diabetes at bay. And nicole says having support is critical. You did it. Whoooa she coined a term for people who share the load. Theyre called type 3s. The type 3 is the person who loves or cares about the person with type 1 or type 2. When you have a really great type 3 that you can cry with, you can laugh with, you can be mad at diabetes with, and maybe theyll say some silly things about the disease when its going wrong, thats beautiful. Where . I see a dolphin. At the end of the day, having a good mental attitude can help control a disease we cannot cure. For my generation, im diane roberts. Nicole is just a positive person who can now add jewelry maker to her long list of accomplishments. She recently created a stylish medical i. D. Bracelet designed to save lives in case of an emergency. Now, if you want more information on nicole and her work with diabetes, youll find it at our web site mygeneration. Org. Now, paul sorvinos toughguy characters onscreen are no match for a disease thats killing thousands every year. Thats why hes taking a nononsense approach when it comes to managing his diabetes. The actor and his Academy Awardwinning daughter mira gave my generations Tatiana Anderson some dramafree advice. Hes one of hollywoods leading character actors. Dont put too many onions in the sauce. Famous for playing the stereotypical italian in goodfellas, mobbed up and never shying away from a good meal. Ok. Now we can eat. And though acting may be his specialty. Ah. Hes added concertquality tenor to his list of accomplishments, too. [singing in italian] but more recently, and with the help of his daughter, actress mira sorvino, paul sorvinos taken on a new role, using his fame to raise awareness about a health issue that touches the lives of nearly 350 Million People around the world, including his own. When did you first know that something was not quite right with your health . What were you feeling . I really didnt know. I noticed that i was feeling sometimes more tired than i liked and sometimes more thirsty than id ever been before. I didnt understand it. And the doctor said, your blood sugars 420, or 430. He said, you got diabetes. I said, no, i dont. He said, yes, you do. If you dont deal with it, it can become a monster, and you really have to part of our message is take control, be proactive about it, and its actually very empowering, because you can control your blood sugars and then have a very normal life. But also through the discipline of it, mira. You become stronger. Yes. But before he could be a good example for others, sorvino had to get his own type 2 diabetes in check. I was told what to do and i did some of it. Heh. And then i would eat a piece of pie and take 6 pills, and of course i ended up in the hospital with pancreatitis, because you cant just do that. Its not the way it works. My desperado days gastronomically were at an end. He doesnt have to give up the traditional meals. We just dont serve the bread anymore and he doesnt have the dessert. Thats very, very helpful. That allows me to continue being an italian. Support is key to managing blood sugars and you know, somebody living with diabetes shouldnt have to go it alone, and it will be so much easier if loved ones, family, friends, all get in on the program, basically, and that Program Includes a lot of things. Exercise is one. Whether its a series of yoga poses or a brisk game of tennis, a rigorous training routine is an important part of keeping blood sugar levels in balance. We take walks after dinner, because that goes a very long way to lowering the blood sugar right after you take in a big meal. Big time. Yeah. Its actually good for everybody, so the funny thing is, living a diabetesfriendly lifestyle is actually really good for the whole family. You really gotta count your blessings. Im 72 years old. Im still playing tennis 3 times a week. Im stillim still in the game of life. Im stilli just sang two concerts, 15 songs a night. Im doing things that are that are veryactive, very filled with life. Though hes taken on the role of advocate when it comes to living a healthy life with diabetes, sorvino had some reservations about playing that part at first. After all, being candid in hollywood about something that might be perceived as a weakness could be a career killer, even for a tough guy. But it wasnt a concern that lasted very long. At my age, im kind of bulletproof. If people are gonna think that i shouldnt be acting, or producers or whatever, because i have diabetes, you know, thats really their problem. Im ok. I want to do what i want to do, and if letting people know about diabetes is a good thing, then why not do it . And as scripts continue to come his way, sorvino knows he made the right decision to put his battle with diabetes at center stage. No one has said anything except that its a good thing, and no one has said, you cant work for us. And while hollywood might not take issue with his diabetes, sorvino says those who share his condition should take issue with their own health. Anytime you take real control of what goes into your body and what you do with your body, youre going to feel better about yourself, because its a victory every day, because you gotta win. If you dont win, you die. And paul sorvino says he doesnt plan on stopping the music of his life anytime soon. Where the flying fishes play and the dawn comes up like thunder out of china across the bay from new york city, Tatiana Anderson for my generation. What a voice. What a message. And pauls not alone. Other celebrities whove added their voices to beating diabetes include patti labelle, larry king, aretha franklin, and mary tyler moore. Be a part of the conversation. Send an email to mygeneration aarp. Org or like us on facebook and follow us on twitter. Fruit is great, and i know it can be a refreshing dessert, of course, but what if youd just rather have a delicious slice of Red Velvet Cake . Yeah, what about that . Chicago Chef Homaro Cantu is a Mad Scientist of sorts, and he has concocted a guiltfree answer to the diabetes dilemma. I describe myself as a guy that likes to solve problems. Chef cantu is a molecular gastronomist. He uses science and technology to turn our taste buds into allies in Healthy Eating. His popular chicago restaurants offer patrons a unique opportunity to experience what cantu describes as flavor tripping. Flavor tripping means youre gonna eat something and then a minute later, its gonna taste like something else. This could be as simple as a lemon, or it could be a whole dish, or an entire tasting menu, where youll just be eating a whole dish and then its gonna go from tasting like, say, an Italian Cheese course, its gonna just turn into a chocolate cannoli. I think the flavor tripping is a real neat idea. I think taking whatever you could take, flavors that people are accustomed to, and just switch them up by the addition of a simple ingredient like that and give you something totally new and strange in a good way is really a neat thing to do. How does this Mad Scientist create such dishes . He uses something called a miracle berry. Its a real berry, first found in africa in 1725, and which can be grown as a houseplant. He buys enormous quantities of these berries and developed a way to serve them in either powder or tablet form. Heres how miracle berries work. You eat the berry, its got a little protein in it, and that proteins gonna go on your tongue. Your tongue has two taste receptors, one that tastes sour and bitter, the other one tastes everything else. This little protein just latches onto your sour and bitter receptor, so you cant taste sour and bitter things, so when you eat, say, lemons, it goes down the other way, goes into your brain, tells you its sweet. Its a very simple physiological effect. Why is chef cantu going to such Great Lengths to change the taste of what we eat . Northwestern Memorial Hospital obesity expert Robert Kushner says worldwide, were facing two major epidemics obesity and diabetes. If obesity was driving in the car, in the rear view mirror, youd see diabetes. He says the only way to attack these problems is if all members of society get involved, and that includes the food industry. Where we eat and what we eat has a very Important Role to play. If we can find a way to provide the mouth feel of something that is sweet and savory but also reduce the sugar and the total calories, i think that is a step in the right direction.
