and you can get flashing lights and even blind spots. >> we'll talk about triggers, but what causes a migraine. >> what happens is there is some altered blood flow to the brain and this causes the blood vessels in the brain to dilate and then they're large and swollen they press on the nerves around them, and they cause these chemicals to be released and both of those factors cause that debilitating pain. >> it's hard sometimes to figure out what might have set off a migraine but what are some common triggers we know of? >> there are environmental triggers and lifestyle triggers. we have stress, obvious, skipping meals when your blood sugar goes down, being dehydrated as well. certain foods can trigger it, alcohol, red wine is my trigger, aged cheeses and chocolate. >> you've just basically described my diet. throw coffee in there and call it good. >> what else? also poor sleeping habits. if you sleep too little or too much, that can be one, menstrual cycles and changes in weather can also trigger them. >> i know you recommend keeping a migraine diary. >> it's important for people to identify their triggers. for women, keep a diary so you can make associations and if you don't know how ta make one on your own, a good place to start, migraineresource.com, a good one on the internet. >> things that are not medications, is there some way to treat it without having to turn to drugs? >> there is. treatment of migraines is a multifaceted aapproach. things you can do once you get a headache that are alternative are ice, biofeedback, relaxation techniques and even just sleeping it off, those are some options to start with. >> ice on wherever it's hurting or the neck? >> either/or, both. >> in terms of the medicine, what do you recommend? >> two categories, there's pain medication and preventative medication. pain medication, start with over-the-counter medications, that can be effective for many people and typically contain ibuprofen or aspirin and if those aren't enough go to your doctor and get a prescription strength, those are a class called tryptans and can work for you. >> coffee, a lot of people say caffeine can stave off a headache or reduce it once you have it? >> it can. the caffeine itself can be a pain relieving chemical. some of the over-the-counter brands even contain caffeine in them. and then the other option for people, if you get migraines frequently is to do something that's preventative, that's something you take once a day instead of just as needed, and that can help also ward off the headaches as well. >> those are for chronic sufferers? >> correct. >> is it ever a sign of something more serious you should talk to your doctor about? >> any time you have a severe headache you need to be seen by your doctor to be diagnosed with migraines and they will do a proper exam to make sure it's nothing more serious. >> dr. keri peterson, good advice for the migraine sufferers out there this time of year, a lot of stress, a lot of red wine so be careful. thanks so much. >> thanks. coming up, who are your style icons? >> i'm great. >> it's just a tiny little restaurant stanfor on bedford street we opened up about 13 years ago. >> now five restaurants later. >> yes, partners in a few others. >> let's get cooking. you'll help us with appetizers this morning. >> snacks for the holidays a lot of the ideas that you prep it up and get it set up ahead of time so you can entertain and have fun with your guests. >> which we love to you. >> this is a basic straightforward recipe, great ingredients and simplicity is the mantra. we have our beef, pork. >> this is meatballs with sp spedini we're making. >> skewer, so you're mixing everything in. and then the most important thing is you just want to integrate it all together without overworking everything. >> you have the dried crumbs in here, the bread. >> exactly. what moistens it is the milk here, i'll soften everything up. >> regular millk? >> we use organic. >> okay. >> whole milk. >> healthy. >> so basically that's the starting point. once it gets to this point, we're going to form our meatballs and to do the skewers we're using the meatballs, we have chipolini onions. >> looked caramelized before. >> you most them up ahead of time because you don't want to burn the outseed of the onions. you want them cooked all the way through and just really easy to deal with. >> easier to put on a stick opinion you're putting some bay in there as well. >> adds an earthy flavor to it. we have our meatball there. and goes right to the grill. you can do it on the grill or you can even do it in the oven if you don't have one on the surface, you know, grills like this or even a panini press works. >> this is how you serve it up? >> this is the end product and great if you entertain on a plate and want to do this, serve this or if you want to do little mini skewers you can do that as well if you're passing it around as far as finger food. >> you have this polenta appetizer as well. >> this is done the day before so you're cooking your polenta making it really soft and pours into the pan and this is going to be chilled. once it's chilled, the next day it seizes up like this and we cut it into little squares. >> you grill it also. hey guys, ready for appis, appetizers?
