New this morning, police are searching for the person who pointed a green laser at a plane over long island. A united air lines pilot reported the laser strike around 11 30 last night while flying over manatuck, on the north shore of Suffolk County. The flight took off from new jersey and was headed to warwick, rhode island. It was at 11,000 feet when the laser light lit up the cockpit. And happening now, police in newark are on the hunt for a driver responsible for a frightening hitandrun. I want to warn you, some of the scenes are disturbing. The selfhome video shows the moments as three young girls were hit yesterday afternoon. Surveillance video shows the white truck responsible. It hit the girls, excuse me, stops momentarily and keeps two men chased the truck and got the license number. We chased the guy down and he started to slow up, but must have saw us in the back. He got to the red light and made a left on the light anyway. If we would have caught the guy, there would have been, you know, street justice here. Thankfully, the girls are okay. That truck was recovered in elizabeth. Police say they know who theyre looking for. 6 03. The town of mt. Pleasant will hold a candlelight vigil at city hall tonight to mourn the victims of last years metro north crash. Six people were killed, 26 injured, along with two railroad workers. The crash was caused by a mercedes box inside the crossing by heavy traffic. New this morning, new york city is going hightech. The Police Commissioner is eager and excited to discuss the most recent crime stats. In fact, hes already gone on the record publicly to say that last month, january, was the safest month in city history. And later on today, he will reiterate that point with the mayor by his side when they hold a joint session News Conference discussing the recent crime saturdays heres a look at the numbers for you. Homicides are down 45 percent, shootings down 35 percent. But slashings and stabings are up 20 percent. Although the commissioner says its not a pattern, there has been 10 slashings and stabings so far this year, either on the trains or in the subways. The nypd has increased patrols and we know the Guardian Angels are now riding the trains because of the recent spike in slashings. The commissioner is quick to point out that most of the have happened have not been random. Theyve happened among individuals who have had a personal dispute or they were familiar with each other in one way or another. But nonetheless, he says people have a legitimate reason to be concerned and alarmed about the recent uptick in slashings and stabings.
