The best part of wakin up so, where do you want to start . I think this is a pretty good place. Is folgers in your cup. Hurricane joaquin remains strong. It is moving as a category 4 as it heads towards bermuda. There are multiple deaths connected to the heavy rain and flooding with joaquin. Authorities have not released an official death toll yet. A small new development about that missing cargo ship weve been telling you about. It disappeared near the bahamas as the storm hit. Ring from el faro but the ship itself and the people aboard are still missing. You look at that ship and see how big it is. Huge. Wow. Streets are flooded in South Carolina, and the rain doesnt look to be letting up anytime soon. That area expected to see heavy rain through tomorrow. So much so the president declared a state of emergency in South Carolina yesterday ordering federal aid for the areas hit hardest by the storm. Several roads in charleston are flooded out, and leaders there are worried that the rising waters will only get worse. What is that water maybe 8 inches deep and somebodys out there in a kayak. Its like dont do that. Theres traffic in the road too. Shes paddling behind a truck. Its gross. Come on. It is gross on top of everything else. The data shows theyve had a foot of rain in some areas. In the charleston area. Yes. So theyll continue to see the rain moving in there today. Line is where we have problems with rain water causing flooding. For us to the north its been mainly the high surf, the waves at high tide. In South Carolina, that charleston area is low country. Its low lying areas. Thats the problem there. The good news is the hurricane is well out to sea. We could be tracking that and leftovers of that instead. Well put up with what the other storm is grabbing from it which is moisture for us its going to turn out to be a decent day. I dont think its the best but its definitely not the worst it could be. I like it. If you wouldve told us we were getting this on tuesday we know what to do. Cloudy is what were going to go with today and temperatures back into the low 60s. It will take time for the temperatures to go up. The winds are with us until at least tuesday. Outside right now youre going visibility is good. Were drying out a little bit, and that trend continues for today. The further north you are the better chance youre going to get to see some sunshine. We might get a little glimpse of it. Clouds will be around most of the day. Winds northeast 10 to 20 miles an hour. 64 humidity and pressures on the rise. Rough surf, beach erosion continues until monday. We have minor coastal flooding and high tides continuing at the jersey shore. Those water levels will still be high. Hurricane joaquin out in the atlantic. Morning lows 40s and 50s pretty much across the board. Coldest spot 45. And the winds still continuing mainly south of the area. Theyre coming out of the northeast. Heres the 48 hour rain totals, an inch and a half for central park. 2 inches for west hampton. Belmar getting 2 inches. Parts of new jersey pushing an inch and a half. Those are the areas where we got the highest amounts of rainfall. There are still light rain showers happening well north and west of the city into the northern counties, but weve stopped the rain down south and what could happen with the rough surf. The Coastal Flood Advisory goes until 4 00 today. There is still a coastal advisory for parts of long island and a rough surf advisory on the fork. Any boating or getting in the water is not a good idea here while weve got this surf up so high. Well continue to see that until tuesday. Heres what its doing. Its providing the rain and getting that flow of energy and moisture to the carolinas, and thats where well see the main trouble from this point really until tuesday as well. Theres the hurricane, joaquin will continue to push off to the north and east affecting the bahamas and making its way as a category 3 storm weakening by monday into tuesday to a category 1. As far as tracking the storm, we dont have any threat whatsoever as far as the storm coming close to us. The energy of the storm over the ocean could potentially give us a little bit of high looking at in the coming days, is hundreds and hundreds of miles offshore. Cloudy and breezy today, 62. The wind is still around but 65 and a breezy blend of sunshine and clouds throughout the day. Its going to be much better, i think, once we get into tomorrow, not only will we see the sunshine, but well also see these winds settle down. 62 with breezy conditions under cloudy skies, youre still going to need that extra layer and still feel the chill from time to time. Going back to 52 for the overnight low and the accuweather sevenday forecast calling for temperatures returning to the 70s by tuesday. Thats when its going to settle in to a very nice early october weather pattern, our first full week of october. Were looking at low 70s until we get to thursday. Its 67 degrees, 68 on friday. Still a very nice october feel to the atmosphere, and not nearly as breezy. You can really take the temperatures in the upper 60s this time of year if you dont have the winds to match. Its still going to make you feel uncomfortable. Its kind of chilly out this morning too. Exactly. Youve got to have the jacket yesterday. I was bundled up. Yes, i know. No good. Youre right, tuesday if we knew this was going to be like this today we would have said. Giddy. Yeah, well take it. Start somewhere fresh welcome back, a bit of a boat mystery played out in brooklyn this weekend. Old boat washed ashore and became a potential danger in one neighborhood. It was a lot more than just an eyesore. The people who live there tried to get rid of it, but when they kept running into roadblocks they turned to nina pineda and 7 on your side. Yolanda glanced out her picture two weeks ago and got a look at this. There it was, and i was really concerned that it would damage the bulkhead. An old boat abandoned, bobbing around and banging into her property. For half a month theyve been trying to get the barnacle covered oil leaking eyesore out of there. You called the borough president , the council people, you called 911. 311. The city. I made so many calls and no one seemed to know what to do. When she caught neighborhood kids playing on board the boat yolanda tried to get it towed herself but couldnt afford the 10,000 boat fee. What worried you . That they could slip or hurt themselves. It is moving as a category 4 storm towards bermuda after pounding the bahamas. There were multiple deaths connected to the heavy rain and bahamas. Released an official death toll. Search teams will be back out on the water this morning to look for that cargo ship that the storm hit. It was huge. The coast guard found a life ring from el faro but the ship itself and 33 people aboard are still missing. El faro dropped out of communication after taking on water from what we know were 20 to 30foot waves. You look at how big that ship is and its incredible. Streets are flooded in South Carolina, and the rain does not look to be letting up anytime soon down there. The area is expected to see heavy rain through tomorrow. So much so the president declared a state of emergency in South Carolina yesterday ordering federal aid. Several roads in charleston are closed this morning because of flooding and officials are worried that the rising waters will only get worse. It looks like it. Everybodys walking through the water. Ill tell you why not to. Theres two main reasons not to. Number one, a lot of times when the street, it has raw sewage in it. Mmhmm. Number two, when youre walking through the water, you dont know beneath it. Sometimes manholes have come undone or there are other obscure things maybe dropoffs, et cetera. Thats not how you want to go out. It also conducts electricity. Thank you, michelle for taking it up a notch. I think sometimes too they come out when they see the news cameras. Put on your galoshes lets go outside and get on tv. Dont do that. Just wave from your window. We dont have to worry about rain water. Instead its the waves that continue to be a concern at high tide. Coastal flooding, minor coastal flooding, still watching that, and probably will be watching the waves all the way monday into early tuesday before we can really let it go. Clouds out there right now. I think theyre going to look better than yesterday but definitely not perfect yet. 54 degrees, still chilly with those wind up to 20 miles an hour in central park. Weve been looking at the latest wind gusts up to 22 miles an hour in the last couple of minutes and 30 miles an hour wind gusts out in the island. Top speeds yesterday in and around the boroughs were above 40 miles an hour official reporting station. Rough surf will create more beach erosion that continues until monday. Theres minor coast fall flooding still possible at high tide, especially for the new jersey shore, and then Hurricane Joaquin stays well out in the atlantic but it still kicks up our surf. Were feeling the effects even though its hundreds and hundreds of miles away. Low 50s for hauppauge, down the jersey shore temperatures in the mid50s as well. Newark youre at 53. 47 for sussex, 45 in monticello and 52 for poughkeepsie. Satellite picture showing no rain around here. North of the masondixon line we dont have a lot of rain. You go down to the carolinas, there is real flooding problems, and thats caused by rain that has amounted to almost a foot in some cases. Coastal flood advisory until 4 00 going for the jersey shore, also going for parts of long island as an advisory until 6 p. M. Weve got rough surf advisories for eastern long island. So still big waves, and its that combination of the persistent winds eating away at the beaches and then the high tides coming in and making the water even higher than usual so thats what were putting up with. You can see these areas down to the carolinas, oranges, yellows, reds persistently hour after hour. In the 12hour period about an inch of rain per hour. Its been nonstop for parts of the carolinas. Then we have joaquin offshore which continues to push away making that trend to the north and east. It will be downgraded eventually into a category 1 storm as it makes its way into our latitudes and then it just fades off into the ocean, and really isnt is big deal. Until it gets out of here, we need to watch out for the wind at high tide and how high that water gets. The pattern over the next couple of days is to see more and more sunshine. 65 with a breezy blend of clouds and sun for tomorrow. So the difference between today and tomorrow is a little more wind today and less sun. Well see improvements in the skies and winds settling down by tomorrow. Its cloudy and chilly, 52.
