We know there are still victims in the hospitals who have been unidentified. 130 or 40 victims and maybe a dozen hospitals are involved and of course a lot of international passengers, and apparently we are going to have a tough time matching up people with identities and families so we are not giving up hope. While they spent most of their time in new york, their parents live in the netherlands, again, they are still missing this afternoon. David. After the bombings she was able to catch a car to paris and then a flight here to newark, she touched down just a few hours ago but she truly believes she may not have made it out alive had she not done one small thing that at the time seemed really trivial. I am very, very glad to be home. I can think of no place i would rather be right now than back at home to be with my family right now. Reporter a tremendous rush of emotion as Ashley Bruggeman runs straight into her familys arms. The 25yearold is exhausted, still wearing the same clothes she had on when she headed to this airport in brussels yesterday morning. Still a shock. I still cant believe it was real. Headed to brussels for business but returning home had planned to spend a few days in copenhagen. Yesterday morning she aarrived at the airport in brussels arrived at the airport in brussels, checked her bags through security and not a problem and then shortly after pure chaos. All of a sudden people start running around the corner with these looks of pure panic and fear on their faces and it started as a few people and it was more and more and more people. Reporter ashley had no idea what was happening, didnt know terrorists had set off bombs. It was a lot of chaos at the airport. No one really knowing what was going on, what was going to happen next. Reporter at first, she thought gunmen had stormed the building, she and many others were removed from the terminal to the tarmac and eventually a hangar. Ashley immediately reached out to her family, sent this text message to her mother telling her she was okay. Its just been i think im still numb because it shows you how precious life is, you one minute and then you realize you dont want to sweat the small stuff. This is what really matters. Reporter ashley tells me one Little Things still sticks out in her mind, on that infamous morning she was worried about traffic in brussels so she called her car service and had it pick her up 30 minutes earlier. She believes that made all the difference. If she hadnt she doesnt think she would be here right now. I bless every angel that i have thats watching over me and whatever stroke of luck got me to that airport early enough that i was through security at the time, i just thank god that i am safe. This afternoon we learned that the Brussels Airport will remain closed until at least saturday. Meanwhile, the u. S. State department has officially issued a travel warning for europe. The agency says it does not intend to discourage american tourists but does want them to know the risks. Travelers are being told to be vigilant in Public Places including on mass transit, tourists are also being asked to avoid crowded spaces and always be aware of their surroundings. Security in and around new york city remains high in the wake of the deadly attacks. We are constantly seeking to change our security procedures to keep contemporary with the threat so that we will have a team going to paris very shortly led by commissioner miller and while there im assuming they will also have the opportunity to interact with belgians on the events they just experienced. This is where baptisms happen, where weddings happen, churches all around this area. This is all that is left of the main chapel here at First Presbyterian church in englewood. You see the walls Still Standing and then above the almost 150 years, all gone. The organ refurbished five years ago ruined and the pughs all lost before easter. So many members of the community belong to this church where englewood started. Reporter this mother and daughter have a personal history with this church that dates back to preschool. Its just very weird to see it like this. I have so many good memories there from being 4 and 5 years old. Its a building and so ultimately the church is about people and we get a chance to experience that more than churches normally do. Reporter the pastor says this seasons message of renewal and rebirth really hits home this year, leaves him more enlightened and grateful. Easter is about resurrection and thats going to have a deeper meaning for us than it reporter last night as the fire burned for hours and the church signs out front announced the times for good friday and easter services, he says he watched in disbelief. We have been really grateful for the outpouring of support so we have had offers from churches, synagogues, civic space. Reporter that is just so beautiful. The two were convicted of bankruptcy fraud but a judge allowed them to serve separately in order to care for their four daughters. Rescue teams in new jersey pulled a kayaker to safety after he got in trouble in the hackensack river. The man got stuck in mud after the tide went out and it started to get dangerous. The marine units from the teaneck and hackensack Fire Departments worked together to save this man. They ended up getting a board out to him and pulled him to the rescue boat. It was pretty scary. Thank god it wasnt my husband because he always goes out pretty thick. He was pretty it was like a vacuum. He was stuck in there pretty good so hard to pull him out but we figured out a good way to get him out. Sure did. Back on solid ground. They say he was walking and he appears to be fine and thats a popular river, you know, for kayakers to get out there. But when you get stuck in mud, thats a whole new game. Thats got to be scary. He was caught up to his waist there. Your first thought isnt about tide levels when youre on a river but theres been such a big buildup of silt in the lower hackensack that the depth is low and thats why that happened. I guess so. Prosecutors now say that the suspects bomb maker in the paris attacks was one of two suicide bombers who targeted the Brussels Airport. This is a picture of the three as much as in the airport. The suspected bomb maker is likely the man all the way to the left. This is a new sign that both attacks, the one in belgium and the one in paris, were linked to the same isis terror cell. Police searching for suspects in a pair of attacks in two different boroughs in new york city. The first attack happened at 7 30 last night on west 252nd street and henry hudson parkway, this is in the riverdale section of the broncos. Police say a 29yearold man was slashed on the cheek. 15 minutes later a 15yearold was stabbed in the right back of him. In that case three suspects ran away. A potential break in the deadly shooting of an aide to new york governor andrew cuomo. The nypd have released a photo of several people they want to question about the shooting. It happened in september hours before the west indian day parade. 43yearold carey gabay was shot as several gunmen were firing at each other. Theres still no arrests in the case. The man arrested for legally taking photos up a womans dress at a Suffolk County mall now on the news, 24 yearold Scott Coleman was arraigned today for illegal surveillance. Police say a woman shopping at macys in lake grove yesterday became suspicious when coleman was standing behind her. She told security officers. Suffolk county police were called in. A family in mourning tonight outraged over the death of a brother who was killed when he was hit by an nypd van. Yeah, for the first time we are seeing video of the accident. Eyewitness News Reporter rob nelson has the details. Rob. Reporter good afternoon, liz. Three years ago at this intersection behind me a 61 yearold man was fatally struck by an nypd police van. Well, three years later what this has turned into is the city saying it did nothing wrong and the family saying they simply will continue to fight for some justice. Its this video that shows the moment 61yearold felix coss was simply crossing the street near broadway and hooper street in williamsburg back in july 2013 when he was struck and killed by a Police Officer driving this nypd van. Of way and was well within the crosswalk. Felixs still grieving brother spoke to Eyewitness News today from cleveland. My poor brother still had good years in front of him and, you know, thats gone. Thats gone. Reporter whats made matters worse is that nearly three years after the deadly accident the family is still wrapped in a legal battle with the city which has cleared the vans driver of any wrongdoing. In fact, according to legal papers, the city puts the blame on the victim, saying, quote, plaintiff failed to use all required proper appropriate and reasonable Safety Devices and or equipment and failed to take all proper, appropriate and reasonable steps to assure his or her or their safety, end quote. According to the city of new york, if youre crossing in a crosswalk with a walk light in your favor, that you are assuming the risk of being hit by a car and if you are hit by a car, you are at fault for its almost like, you know, okay, theres a dead dog in the street. Lets push him over, lets let the trash people pick him up and throw him in the dump and lets move on. Reporter the familys lawyer says there are eyewitness accounts that the officer was using her cell phone at the time of the accident. Levine says the citys lack of action flies in the face of mayor de blasios Vision Zero Initiative to improve pedestrian safety. The police got a free pass here when they killed the man, not even so much as a violation was issued, yet mayor de blasio is on tv talking about vision zero every day, how hes an advocate for pedestrian safety.
