It was spraying into the area gushing at least 8 feet or so. If you take a look at the building across the street, that is a mixed Residential Commercial building. Fire Officials Say that building was partially evacuated. That first floor is all commercial, those Business Owners were all taken out of there as you can imagine theres probably quite a bit of water damage inside there, and the electricity has been shut off because there are power lines in the cellar. If you look at the roof of that building, those residents are just hanging out because fire Officials Say they were not evacuated so theyre just going to wait this out. If you look down it may be hard to see with this fire truck. On the ground level you can get a sense of how deep this water is by looking at those trash cans and how high that water has come up there. Again, were on queens boulevard. Thats quite a wide boulevard and at times that water was almost all the way over crossed over to this side. Moments ago fire officials gave us an update. Lets take a listen to what they had to tell us. Were pushing upwards of four hours by now. Condition was such that dep had a difficult time finding the exact gate valves to shut down to isolate the problem area. Now the streets have been shut down around this area for several blocks now, so the residents on this side, they obviously have concerns of this water coming up to their apartments and how it will impact them. Fire Officials Say they should hang tight to have this under control. Moments ago we saw dep crews on this side looking into the sewer holes trying to shut off presumably those water lines. That is the latest from here on queens boulevard. Cefaan kim channel 7 Eyewitness News. Queens boulevard such a busy, such an important thoroughfare through queens. Absolutely. You know it is causing some traffic issues throughout the area. We actually have shannon sohn on news copter 7 with that part of our coverage. Shirleen, this has been a nightmare for the last couple of hours. Queens boulevard is now a lake. The only vehicles you see traveling through this area are the Fire Department officials trying to get here. You know exactly what is closed through this area. Left, right across your screen. That is broadway, and that is the seat of where all of this happened. Broadway itself, the water flows all the way back to justice street, which is where they are staging with the Emergency Services unit, but broadway itself is completely shut down, even beyond that point all the way back to corona avenue. Lets take you back to queens boulevard itself. On the north side of this, youve got the closure in place at 51st avenue and on the south side 55th avenue is the point of this closure, and you can see the delays through the area. Thats Queen Center Mall right there. Will say that people have been listening and heeding the warnings, the delays stop here which is significantly better than it was before. This affects you as you come off the l. I. E. As well. The l. I. E. Delays have eased out as well. Now the last thing that we want to show you because weve been talking about the subways as well, some of the water is getting into the subway system, but for the most part the drains are doing what they are supposed to do and catching that water. You are looking down at the grand avenue newtown station. You can see ev y uel ntoand then someone going in and out of the we are expecting overcrowding issuing and we are expecting delays on the ef, m, and r subway lines. Delays only right now. Out Subway Service remains open and of course because of the street closures any local buses, specifically the q60 bus, but any local busings through this area will see delays as well. Patience this afternoon. Reporting live over queens, shannon sohn channel 7 Eyewitness News. Shannon thank you.
