From the bronx to brooklyn, police hoping to catch two suspect whose shot and killed an innocent customer inside a bodega. The crime caught on camera. Two men in hoodies walking through the store pulling out a gun and demanding money. Damian francis, a father, tried to step in and gunman turned and shot him in the chest. His family tonight obviously heart broken. I started to cry and i just cried for like two days straight. He had a nice heart. He loved to help people. The two robbers taking money from the register then taking off. Police say they hope someone will recognize the suspects and help track them down. An arrest tonight, the mysterious death of a woman in an apartment on the upper west side. Nearly six years ago the dead in a bathtub. At first thought an accident but now her husband has been charged with Eyewitness News reporter Kemberly Richardson is in scarsdale where her husband was arrested. Covlin was living in a quiet neighborhood. Would often visit his two kids who now live with his parents. But after six long years his world was just turned upside down and he never saw it coming. Mr. Covlin is stunned. Hes stunned by what has happened. Reporter after six years of truly believing he was free and clear living in this home in new rochelle, convinced he was not a suspect in the death of his wife shelly, today rod covlin seemed dazed as he sat in a courtroom now charged with Second Degree murder. The sister listened as the man who was once part of their family entered a not guilty plea. In the back of his mind he to come. Right from the beginning he said he did not commit the crowd reporter the 42yearolds house of cards came crashing down yesterday morning. Covlin stepped off a train and was cuffed. Back in 2009 at the time of shellys death, the pair lived in separate apartments in this building on west 68th street. They were going through a bitter divorce but on new years eve the couples then 9yearold daughter found her mom dead in a bathtub. For religious reasons shelly was buried the next day, her death ruled an accident, but months later her family had her body exumd. Exhumed. It was ruled homicide by strangulation. Covlin was on his way to visit his kids, 15 and 9 years old, who live with his parents in a home in this quiet culdesac. The two people who are suffering tremendously by this are the two very Young Children and mr. Covlin is devastated by that. Hes done everything in his power to watch over them and take care of them. Both families have been fighting in court over shele s estate. Covlin is due back in court november 9th. Kemberly richardson, channel 7 eyewitness a woman from connecticut is denying helping her boyfriend kill his parents. 31yearold jennifer valant made her first appearance in court today in bridgeport. Shes charged with conspiracy to commit murder and hindering prosecution in the death of jeffrey and jeanette navin. Kyle navin is charged with their murders. The bodies were found buried in a vacant home. A fire started in park slope. Officials say the flames were contained to one apartment. One resident did suffer minor injuries. President obama in the tristate tonight, right now in new jersey where mr. Obama is calling for an overhaul of the criminal Justice System and the prison system that pushes punishment instead of rehabilitation. A recidivism rate of right now. Political reporter dave evans is here with more. The president is indeed pushing for an overhaul of the criminal Justice System. There are more than 2 million men and women behind bars, far more than any other country in the world. When they get out, many find out its hard to reenter society. Finding a job and staying sober, not easy. The president wants to change all that. Reporter the president today visited a rehab center in newark and held a discussion on how to make our criminal Justice System more fair. We have only 5 of the 25 of its inmates. Most are black and latino and the president says this has got to change. Many republicans agree. Its good for everybody. It means less crime. It means less recidivism. It means less money spent on incarceration. It means less wasted taxpayer money. Reporter obama wants to extend Technical Training for inmates. And he wants to cut sentences for nonviolent drugrelated crimes. Today some of the president s biggest applause came over his decision to, whats called, ban the box. Like a lot of big employers on many job applications theres a box that asks if you have a criminal record. If you answer yes, then a lot of times youre not getting a call back. Were going to do our part in changing this. Reporter today in camden governor christie blasted the president , accusing him of trying to take credit for his own criminal Justice Reform statewide. Christie put out this instagram message saying dear mr. President , weve been getting this done in new jersey since 2010. Im confident when the spotlight is shown on camden that camden is going to shine and so will its residents and thats a really good change. Tonight the president is attending a Democratic Party fundraiser then another fundraiser at a special performance of the hit musical hamilton. Former new York Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver is back in court as jury selection got underway in his corruption trial. Hes accused of accepting millions of dollars of payoffs and kickbacks. His lawyers claim hes being targeted over practices that have long been sanctioned in albany. He faces up to 130 years in prison. They made it to the world series. Few thought they would do that.
