[ laughter ] >> all right, so, though clinton has been coy about her intentions, ready for hillary, the super pac encouraging her to run is raking in the cash. last quarter it raised 2.5 million, its best period yet. and last night, she addressed comments about her leaving the white house dead broke. >> that was an inartful use of words, obviously. bill and i have worked hard and we're really successful. i'm grateful for that. but what i worry about, and i talk about this in the book, i'm worried that other people, and particularly younger people are not going to have the same opportunities we did, because even though we came from, you know, great circumstances in terms of our family loving us and, you know, bill had a much more difficult upbringing than i did, but still, we believed that we could pretty much make our way up the ladder. and now i think a lot of particularly young people don't believe that anymore, and that bothers me a lot. want to turn our attention to the conflict in the middle east. israel has warned tens of thousands of palestinians to clear out of northern gaza ahead of a new offensive against hamas. yesterday there was a brief break in the violence, but after the palestinian militants rejected a truce, the air strikes resumed. more than 100 rockets were launched into israel on the same day that saw the first israeli killed by a mortar attack. israeli bombings have killed a reported 200 palestinians through the eight days of fighting. prime minister benjamin netanyahu spoke about the conflict last night, saying "when there is no cease-fire, our answer is fire." the white house calling the egyptian plan for a cease-fire a "live option" and urged hamas to accept that deal. and new technology also playing a role in how israelis prepare for attacks in what has always been a volatile region. israeli developers have created a smartphone app that alerts individuals to rocket attacks with a siren alert. the red alert app also allows people to listen to live radio updates in hebrew. and with militants firing more than 400 rockets towards major cities like tel aviv and jerusalem, the app clearly comes at a much-needed time, as this crisis deepens. while there's no sign of a resolution, at least when it comes to policy, over what to do with the mexico border, one bipartisan proposal would speed up the deportation of children who are crossing it, among other things, but senate majority leader harry reid has already said he wouldn't support it. >> the cornyn legislation covers a lot of issues other than just the issue at the border. remember, had we done comprehensive immigration reform, we wouldn't be having this issue, and everyone here, the border is secure. >> meanwhile, another governor, this time a democrat, has reportedly said that he doesn't want undocumented immigrants being diverted to his state. maryland's martin o'malley reportedly told a white house staffer that deporting children would be sending them to a certain death but asked the white house not to send them to a facility in maryland, saying that they would likely be harassed there. and one congressman, dr. phil gingrey, wrote to the cdc with concerns about the spread of deadly diseases, including abola, a disease whose impact, according to the world health organization, has been limited to africa. >> i want to ask you about the letter you sent to the cdc about the children from central america possibly carrying ebola. where is your evidence on that? >> the border patrol gave us a list of the diseases that they're concerned about, and ebola was one of those. i can't tell you specifically, but there were cases of ebola. >> border patrol told you there is a threat of ebola at the border? >> they said they were concerned about that, yes. >> at the mexico/u.s. border. >> they did say that, they absolutely did. >> the president called immigration a top priority in his second term. a new "washington post"/abc news poll shows a majority of americans disapprove of his handling. and in arizona, opposing protesters clashed outside a facility to be used to house undocumented children. even pope francis now weighing in on this crisis yesterday, saying the tens of thousands of children pouring into the u.s. should be welcomed and protected. to the midterm battleground, where alison lundgren grimes, looking to unseat mitch mcconnell in kentucky, is smashing fund-raising records. she raised 4 million bucks last quarter, breaking the minority leader's own record. mcconnell is raking in money as well. he pulled in about $3 million, bringing his total to $25 million this cycle. by comparison, he raised $20 million at the end of the entire 2008 race. in audio obtained by mother jones, senator mcconnell takes a shot at lundgren grimes for her strategy in targeting female voters and is raising eyebrows for comments about women's progress in shattering the glass ceiling. >> we've, you know, come a long way in pay equity. there are a ton of women ceos now running major companies. more women are graduating from college now than men. i could be wrong, but i think most of the barriers have been lowered. and i'm a little skeptical about arguments that, particularly people like my party who are hostile to women. what kind of nonsense is that?" >> mother jones points out that the fortune 500 companies headed by women set a new high watermark. a new abc news/marist poll showed senate candidate joni ernst tied up with the democrat there, bruce braley at 43%. to new hampshire, incumbent democrat jeanne shaheen is hanging on to an eight-point lead over republican scott brown. in both states, the president's approval doesn't break 40%. meanwhile, republican governor and potential 2016 hopeful chris christie is heading to iowa tomorrow to rub elbows and fund raise for governor terry branstad iowa is the first critical primary state and one christie would love to carry, any republican would. but it seems these days wherever christie goes, controversy follows. he's under fire for his judicial appointments in new jersey. the judicial crisis network says christie's selection is liberal and the group is reportedly spending $75,000 on online ads targeting iowans over the next few days. >> christie's had five openings on the new jersey supreme court, enough to build a new majority, but the court remains liberal. one christie appointee, the chief justice, is a democrat, so liberal, he was mentioned as a potential barack obama nominee to the u.s. supreme court. christie even endorsed obama's liberal supreme court justice sonia sotomayor. important issues like obamacare are at stake in our courts. the next president of the united states may get to appoint as many as three u.s. supreme court nominees, a new majority. call chris christie. tell him to fight for judges who respect the rule of law. >> now, christie's swing through iowa won't end his 2016 tour. he'll head to new hampshire next coming up on july 31st, continuing to fuel any presidential speculation. we move our attention to business and markets were mixed yesterday on better-than-expected earnings reports, more concerns about overaction by the federal reserve. cnbc's steve sedgwick is live in london for us. steve, how are janet yellen's remarks being absorbed in the markets and internationally, businesswise? just keep it shut. >> all right. jeter fanboy, bill karins, chiming in. all right, so, we get 2 for 2 for jeter finishing this game. in the fourth, he waved to the crowd while trotting off. he headed to the dugout to shake hands with his teammates before heading out for one final tip of the cap to soak up some of the crowd love for him. bottom of the fifth, tied game, trout at bat with two men on. he chops one down the third base line, just squeaking by the third baseman, scoring the go-ahead run. we see there trout receiving mvp honors as the american league wins 5-3 and earns the a.l. home advantage for the world series. as much as the night was about derek jeter's final farewell, bill, surprisingly there was no mention of the late tony begin in last night's broadcast. >> that's sad. >> it's unclear if this is a swipe at the baseball player, but the padres tweeted that gwynn tribute after the broadcast. now, 19 years after his death, glen burke, the first openly gay major leaguer was recognized. he believed his career was damaged after the world became awa aware. billy beane was appointed as the mlb's first ambassador for inclusion one year after issuing a policy prohibiting players from harassing and discriminating against other players based on their sexual orientation. beane said he chose to quit the sport rather than hide the fact that he was gay. he was accompanied by burke's sister at the conference and here's what selig had to say. >> i'm proud of our industry's united stance, but the reality, not just in baseball, but in all of our society, is that we can never do enough to ensure respect and inclusion for everyone. all right, so, that brings us to our twitter question for you this morning. do you think mlb and fans are ready for an openly gay player? tweet your answers using #waytooearly. we'll have the best ones later in the show. but we move on to bill karins. you had fun watching last night, right? >> it wasn't a sad, teary thing. like jeter has an aura about him, he didn't want it to be like that. it was more of a celebration. >> definitely a celebration. such a good guy. good leader, too. >> yes. hopefully, they'll still make the playoffs this year. >> we shall see. my orioles -- >> if we could just get rid of those orioles first. all right, let's talk about the rain this morning. we have more of it, the least thing we need. the flooding and the travel problems yesterday were epic around new york city. at one point, it was three hours to get over the george washington bridge because of flash flooding on the cross bronx parkway. but just incredible stuff. we still have more heavy rain out there now, but the cold front is on the way. it is through d.c., knocking on the door of new york city. so, as we go through the day, the weather will improve. it will take longer for you, though, up in boston, areas of eastern new england. it won't really improve until probably after dark today. still a flash flood watch for the area. torrential rains are possible. it's so humid out there, 1 to 3 inches. as far as the timing goes, we're going to see the rain 7:00 a.m. or so ending new york city. by about noon, hartford should be done. providence to boston, you'll have to wait until about 6:00 p.m. and our friends up in maine, it will rain all day. and it poured in maine yesterday. we have some video of some of the rain and some of the damage from the storms up there, and we had a lot of flash flooding in maine. we also had some tree and wind damage with some of the thunderstorms, some of the strong, strong, gusty winds. now, as far as the tree -- look at that tree. that's a big -- is that an oak? looks like a big, huge oak. yeah, that's one car that didn't make it there. so, yeah, there was some of that. that was york village, maine. as far as the chilly, cool stuff goes, remember that polar invasion or polar plunge, whatever you want to call it? it's still cool out there this morning. and the good thing about this is the low humidity. it feels comfortable. even as far south today as atlanta. that's a beautiful 84 with lower humidity than you're used to this time of year. even the same with dallas, too. so, there's some enjoyable stuff out there. and our reward comes tomorrow, thomas. so, everyone from the northeast and mid-atlantic, we dry it out. a beautiful end to the week. >> okay. we look forward to it bill. thank you, sir. appreciate it. coming up at the top of the hour on "morning joe," more on the controversial comments from mitch mcconnell, saying democrats want to give women preferential treatment. plus -- >> if there was a tax on political ridiculousness, we could balance the budget with this measure. but you have to take all these things seriously. it's going to be on the ballot probably. >> he's talking about a measure to split california into six separate states. why the effort once mistaken for a joke could be a reality soon. ♪ hey! i found my true love, livin' in a sweet dream. singin' my favorite song and it all starts with you. whoa-oh-oh-oh, all this goodness... what matters most should always come first. which is why whole grain is the first ingredient in every general mills big g cereal. and why we never use high fructose corn syrup. general mills. look for the big g. welcome back, everybody. earlier in the show, we told you that democrat kentucky senate candidate alison lundgren gimz set a state fund-raising effort. tell your friends that over 23 million bucks has already been spent in the senate kentucky race, though to some that seems astronomical, the race has a long way to become the most expensive senate campaign in history, belonging to the 2012 massachusetts contest between then senator scott brown and elizabeth warren. that campaign, according to the "washington post," had a final price tag of a whopping $82 million. whoa! all right, let's huddle around the water cooler and talk to louis, who takes us to the golden state for the potential it could be split apart. explain this one. >> a measure to split california into six separate states could be headed to the 2016 ballot. the group needs the signatures by friday to get it before voters. it expects to submit the rest by the friday deadline. the effort to split the golden state is being driven by millionaire investor tim draper, who spent $2 million of his own dollars on the initiative. he claims the move would refresh the government and attract more business, but critics say it would be devastating, potentially creating some of the poorest states in the nation. >> in california, if you have money, you can get anything on the ballot, and i think this is exhibit "a" for that. i wish mr. draper would spend his millions of dollars trying to improve our schools, rather than wasting it on a silly political effort. >> now, even if california voters approve the measure, it would still need the okay from congress and the president, which could be a fairly hard sell, thomas. >> yeah. one to watch, though. >> definitely interesting to watch. it started as a joke and now could be a real thing. sno sno now, we're learning new details about the alleged stalker arrested inside sandra bullock's los angeles mansionless month. documents show the oscar winner came face to face with 39-year-old joshua corbett as he walked past her bedroom. she quickly locked herself inside and called 911. bullock says she had just took a shower and feared the intruder was there the entire time. documents claim corbett was carrying written materials that showed he had been on her property before and believed he was married to the actress. he's pleaded not guilty to nearly two dozen felony counts, including stalking, possession of an illegal machine gun and burglary. we'll keep an eye on that story as it develops. now, it's certainly not that easy being a celebrity, or sometimes even a reporter for that matter, thomas. take a look at what happened to a correspondent for britain's sky news live on the air. >> certainly, if we look at, you know, the changing complexion of this cabinet, compared to the last one, the one yesterday, what we can see is that -- >> adam, adam, i know -- do you want to take a pause?
