Interview. Weve seen a lot of things over the years and now without the i. D. S and things going on bad court cases have come down. He is talking about antivoting laws just struck down in several states. New reaction after a court overturned North Carolinas voter i. D. Law. A Appeals Court ruled that texass strict voter i. D. Law and it means that everyone had been able to vote in wisconsin this november whether they have an i. D. Or not. But while this is big news for voters in North Carolina, texas and wisconsin, 13 other states still have voting restrictions on the books for the First Time Ever in a president ial election. Joining me now is johnson. Codirector of the Voting Rights project at the Lawyers Committee for civil rights and zachary roff. National reporter for msnbc digital. Hes author of the new book on Voting Rights, the great suppression. Thank you both for being here. Thank you for having us. Thank you. So some big wins but still we have a lot of fights a head. What should voters in those 13 states expect in november . They can expect that when they get to the polls theyre likely to be asked for iflt d. And to know that they have the i. D. Thats required. Each of these 13 states had restricted i. D. S. Theyre not the same across the board so they need to be prepared and before they get to the polls know what is required of them. If theyre not prepared they will not be allowed to vote. They should be offered a provisional ballot and then the question is will that ballot count. You want to be able to vote a regular ballot. How important are the recent courtroom wins for Voting Rights . Well, theyre extremely important. Theyll be very important in november. We should point out, despite those wins, theres still a concern that theres going to be confusion over what exactly the rules are now in those states. In most cases, texas and North Carolina are likely to have to do a Public Education campaign now saying the rules have changed. You no longer need a photo i. D. Or exactly what the case may be but based on their attitude so far theyre likely to drag their feet on that. Its not likely to be effective but theres still a lot of confusion that keeps voters from the polls. Even in the three states where theres decisions that agreed with those of us that questioned voter i. D. Thats right. Not everybody is paying as close attention as they are. And studies have shown that a lot of people have iflt d. And they turned out to vote. This was the study in texas. And they figured out a lot of these do have i. D. So confusion is one of the big enemies here. And were getting more facts on the ground that show these voter i. D. Laws dont stop fraud because fraud simply doesnt exist and they do stop people from voting at a very high rate. Disproporti disproportionally blacks and hispanics. There was 0. 003 fraud so it was a solution looking for a problem rather than a problem in need of a solution. You know, both Vice President ial candidates weighed in on this issue this week. Watch this. What the court said in this case is you have to strike down some of these foolish rules. It was an intent to discriminate against African Americans and keep African Americans and minorities from being able to participate like others. In the state of indiana i can tell you, we helped lead the nation in voter i. D. And it has not been a barrier to access to the battle place. Im very proud of the state of indiana. So, is this an issue that both sides are likely to highlight from now until november . I think it is. And i think what is important to show is that the courts found that these haws, as the North Carolina court said were in enacted with such surgical precision that they kept minorities from being able to vote. And intentional. Intentionally, so in texas, 600,000 registered voters didnt have the i. D. That texas required and knew these going in but it were very purposefully done and the courts were rejecting that. In the next few months, major court fights over voting laws are scheduled in these states. Alabama, arizona, georgia and virginia. Could these voting restrictions be struck down in time for the election. Yes, more of them still could and you could add ohio to that list where theres a surge of the voter roles being conducted by the secretary of state and has been disproportionally targeted and thats a real concern there that could return the election and thats going to be in court too and theres a lot of this still to play out including in texas and North Carolina and wisconsin where they have to settle on the exact court and this one isnt over but its looking a lot better than it did a few weeks ago in terms of protecting Voting Rights. We can have different opinions but we cant have different facts. Results of voter fraud for the elections between 2000 and 2014, 31 possible cases of voter fraud out of more than 1 billion votes cast and that period, possible fraud rate was 0. 0002 . Dont the facts refute trumps claim that people will try to vote ten times in a rigged election . Yes. That is an absurd claim because the facts show that who is really being punished here are those eligible voters that dont get access to the ballot and the court cases are showing that over and over again, these legislatures pass laws intentionally or to have an impact that would keep minority voters from the polls. Thank you both for your time this morning and check out zacharys book. I think it says a lot. Priority you dond trump talks a lot about veterans but he got in a feud with a muslim couple whose son fought and died in attack. But another story hasnt gotten enough attention. In 2007, Jonathan Langford died while fighting in iraq. His widow was left on her own so he used the armys insurance money to enroll in classes at trump u. Which promised her the world. We teach success. Its going to happen to you. Instead she was scammed out of 35,000 with nothing to show for it. She made this appeal to millions of americans watching the Democratic National convention. Donald trump made big promises about Trump University and i was fooled into believing him. Now he is making big promises about america. Cheryl joins me now. Thank you first of all for being here. Thank you for having me. Cheryl, first, tell us about your experience with Trump University. I was invited to a workshop where they would explain more about how the university could help me take the money that i had and increase it through investing in real estate or property or even possibly in rental properties. Shortly after that workshop i realized this was not what they were presenting it to be. This was a scam. They were not able to deliver what they said that they were going to be able to deliver. Now, a judge has ruled a lawsuit against trump u. Can move forward but lawyers for trump u. Says there is no evidence to support you and others that have made these allegations. They defrauded students. How do you respond to that. I believe there was plenty of evidence to move forward and i believe that the lawyers involved have shown the evidence. Even though his lawyers say theres not enough. Theres plenty of evidence to prove where there was fraud. Purposefully frau thousands of people out of money. So yeah i believe the case will go forward and the evidence will be shown. Your husband died serving for this country and in the line of duty in the service. I want you to listen to a comment that donald trump has made at a rally this week. A man came up to me and he had handed me his purple heart. I always wanted to get the purple heart. This was much easier. How do you respond to that . I have to tell you that purple heart is not a trinket and its not a trophy. That man received that purple heart because of injuries that he incurred while serving this great nation and we dont take that lightly. Well, what compelled you to tell your story at the Democratic Convention . It was one of the things that i mentioned at the convention that i felt like america needed to know the truth. They needed to understand that donald trump makes big promises. He made big promises to the people that enrolled in Trump University. He made big promises to america right now. He couldnt deliver in the big promises to trump and he cannot deliver in the big promises that he is making to america. Theres been a lot of controversy about his statement about the kahns, the parents of the young man killed also in the service for this country in iraq. What is your feelings about what he has said about the kahns and their response. First i want to respond with the kahns are what we call a gold star family. Im a gold star wife and what i want to do is let the kahns know that america and other gold star families stand strong with them. Its absolutely impossible to understand what its like to bury someone that you love. To bury your child or bury your son. We are deeply honored by their commitment and sacrifice and their sons service to this nation and at the same time, this issue, i feel like is not a democratic or republican issue. This is an issue of supporting those people that protect and serve us by serving in the military. Thank you for your time this morning and thanks to you and your family and for your husbands sacrifice. Thank you. Im bias. Maybe its because im a chicagoan. This week organizers formally announce the Obama Library will be built in jackson park on chicagos south side. Its an area thats key to the obama experience. Michelle obama grew up on the south side. And Barrack Obama started his public career in the neighborhood. First as a Community Organizer and state senator. The library site reflects his priorities both then and now. Just check out this interview in 1995. And Barrack Obama reads his package about confronting local leaders in chicago who are thinking of giving up. What do you suppose is going to happen to those boys out there. Im just going to ask you a question. You said youre tired the way some folks out here are tired. So im trying to figure out whats going to happen to those boys. Who is going to make sure that they get a fair shot. I didnt come here because i needed a job. I came here because there were people serious about doing something to change their neighborhoods. Nobody is tending to them and in part i identify with these young men because they dont have fathers either and im thinking nobody is looking after them. Joining me now is Clarence Paige that covered Barrack Obama for many years. Thanks for being here. Glad to be here reverend. Whats your reaction to that clip. Who was that young fellow in that clip . Right . Sure did. Last time i had a chance to shake hands with him. How come youre not going great. And way older than he is. What will the Obama Library mean for that neighborhood and chicago. Its obviously on its face. This is the first president from illinois since Abraham Lincoln number one and he is a guy very much embraced by chicago. Came from outside but the city embraced him. He is very well respected and this library itself is really a production of the university of chicago which virtually owns hyde rk. And Washington Park is important because that is another location, possible location for the library thats being talked about. Washington park is farther away from lake michigan. Its more inner city and its more economically devastated in that media community. And a lot of folks are hoping this would rebuild the community. Put your best foot forward to visitors and jackson park is just a beautiful location for that. I was struck by the quote he read. Whose going to take care of the boys. Now we see that same feeling now in the my brothers keepers initiative. Will this be a big part of obamas post presidency . I think it will and my only question is where that type of activism will show itself. Another possible location for the library was Columbia University in new york and theyre disappointed that he is not going there but when he broke the news to them he also said according to the columbia student newspapers thats one of the best in the country he also said that they look forward to some joint production or joint projects with the university. Its quite possible that Something Like my brothers keeper will be located there, research and active social work and that sort of thing. So its possible. Now the president leaves office with an unusual high approval rating. 54 in the latest polling. How will that shape his role in years ahead. For one thing it must be said his polling i believe has been helped by the fact that his possible replacements have such high disapproval ratings. Both Hillary Clinton and donald trump. Especially trump and will also be after folks saw the candidates in the debates, suddenly president obama doesnt look so bad. Might even look even better. Always saw it happen with jimmy carter and older brothers. Let me play this for you a few years ago. A couple of years ago the president talked about his legacy after leaving office. I know what ill do right after the next president is inaugurated. Ill be on a beach somewhere, drinking out of a coconut. But that probably wont last too long. Think hes earned it, clarence . No question, i think hes earned it. I mean, thats why his hair got so grey so fast. It was remarkable but he certainly has earned a break. And he and michelle have said theyre going to stay in washington until sasha is out of high school. That will be a couple of years from now and what happens after that is i have had it on Good Authority in new york and im disappointed and when i do come home its in new york. I must ask you about something else. Were seeing a video of Chicago Police fatally shooting paul oneill in the back. Well be following that case but how involved do you expect president obama will be when it comes to policing issues after he leaves office . He has tried not to be too involved in individual cases such as this one. But overall hes very concerned and very you know, its really one of the big disappointments of his administration. And he hasnt been able to do more about the situation of Police Conduct and Police Community relations and i certainly think that he wants to do more in this area but frankly everyone looks like chicago and its homicide rate. But the fact that its obamas hometown thank you for your time this morning. That does it for me. Thanks for watching. Ill see you back here next sunday. You show up. You stay up. You listen.
