The president looks at this and i think hes looking at it like i am looking at it. It is politically motivated to hurt and embarrass him in some way. Hopefully hell listen to people th and want to participate in. He will win this fight. It isnt about the affair. Its more than the effort to cover it up that has gotten people in trouble. It shows that a porn star is more credible than the president of the United States. Well have more of an impact in 60 minutes. In just a matter of hours, well finally hear from Stormy Daniels. The porn star is expected to tell the story of her alleged affair. Its a story the president and his lawyers are tried to stop. Chris, heres what ill tell you. The threat was delivered in person. My client is going to deliver it entail. They are going to judge her credibility. It was very frightening to her. Zbl was the threat part of the reason she signed . Absolutely. When the president exerts pressure on you to sign a document, you dont ask a lot of questions. You do as youre told. Tonights interview with 60 minutes can be given by karen mcdougal. Consensual . Yes. After we had been intimate, he tried to pay me. I said, thats not me. Im not that kind of girl. So the white house and the president s attorney have denied both affairs. Lets discuss all of this and the implications of this. Here with the president , we have the attorney and contributor at essence magazine. We have a democratic strategist and former contestant matt welsh. Nbc news senior media editor. Its great to have you to talk about. Well try to get through this as quick as possible. Let me talk to you about this because the president has threatened Stormy Daniels in the amount of 20 million for potentially breaking this interview to 60 minutes. What are the legal implications for her if this nondisclosure agreement in place and goes ahead with the interview that cbs will release . Well, first of all, we have to stop and take a moment how crazy this is. The fact that that is a very good point. The very fact that the president of the United States is suing a porn star. And that a porn star is suing the president of the United States. We need to recognize how egregious that is. Apart from that, im not particularly sure and heres why. The nondisclosure agreement with a contract. A contract is entered into both parties, usually to have a meeting of the minds for consideration. The problem here is that the nondisclosure agreement wasnt signed by donald trump. It is my understanding it is made out to a fictitious person. Good luck enforcing a nondisclosure agreement. Thats one of the biggest problems i have with this. As a former contestant on the apprenti apprentice, you have gone toetotoe with Stormy Daniels. Listen to the sound bite from her lawyer and then well get her reaction. Let me tell you this, chris, that dvd contains information on this relationship. Let me tell you why i sent the tweet. I sent the tweet as a warning shot to Michael Cohen and any other supporter of the president , to the president himself, and to the extent they plan on disparaging my client, lying about what happened or spinning fact that is have no basis in reality after the 60 minute interview, let that tweet be a warning to them. So the tweet that hes referencing there is a tweet he posted earlier in the week. It was a picture of a dvd or a cd, and in it the caption, a picture is worth a thousand words. How many words is this worth . Please deny it. Did the president understa estie Stormy Daniels . Stormy daniels and her attorney have outplayed him every step of the way. Shes dominating the news cycle, which is something donald trump is used to doing and hes used to being the master manipulator of the media. And shes dominating the news cycle on her own terms. Hes on the defensive, she and her attorney are on the offensive. Forget the details and all that stuff because a lot of voters dont care about that. But what voters do care about is the nonstop unrepentive lying. And for democrats, thats reinforcing the lawlessness, the coverups, the nonstop lying and the chaos. That concerns voters. Especially if we figure out where the 130,000 hush money original nighted from within the trump organization. Matt, let me ask you something. Michael avenatti tweeted out an attempt to lower expectations after the interview after all the hype its been getting this week, the tweet about the dvd. He wrote, not all our evidence will be mentioned displayed tonight. That would be foolish. We are not sure what cbs will include but we know a lot from the full interview will have to be cut because of the time allowed. C, tonight is not the end, its the beginning. So what do you make of this twe tweet . They have delivered a lot of eyeballs to 60 minute. This is interesting because a month ago whenever this thing broke, this story was on the verge of not really going anywhere. There was so much other stuff. How did we get here, back to that question . Partly because legal Actions Create news. This is the biggest problem ultimately for President Trump on this, is that as soon as you have depositions he may have to give because this predates his activity of the president , theres no protection and executive privilege on this stuff. So every time theres a new motion or challenge, that just creates a reason for this to come up in conversation. Thats hurtful to him, as is the notion that he has demonstrated now that he is, has a tendency to authorize the payment of large sums of money to make uncomfortable affairs go away. This, to me, is going to end up in the Mueller Investigation. Because that means hes basically opening himself up to charges or ability to be bribed. What does paying a bunch of money to someone that doesnt talk . What does that mean . Unfortunately, this is going to bleed over into the investigation of the real problem for him. Claire, let me ask you something that a lot of pundits have brought up about the president. When he sees something to come against him, he tries to create and distract news somewhere else. We saw that with the firing of h. R. Mcmaster and the appointment of john bolton as the new National Security adviser. Were about three hours away from this. What are the chances . Keep quiet, right . He hasnt done anything about it over the weekend in terms of tweeting, but we are not out of the woods yet. Theres a possibility something happened between now and then to abstract this. And were talking about a president and his lawyer who dont take things lying down whatsoever. And i just was emailing with my sources at cbs to see if they would shed light on what will be revealed. And they told me that the staff have worked all weekend on the interview. She comes across as incredibly credible, strong and delivers a very revealing interview. And so i would ask, if i was at cbs, i would be asking myself, what other ramifications are going to be of airing this intertrue . We all know what happened to dan rather when he had the piece about george bush. So, just out of interest, there was a few weeks ago links about cbs male executives and negative stories dropping. And i wondered if that perhaps had something to do with scare tactics and trying to get 60 minutes to back off. Its interesting Chris Anderson is the leader of this on cbs. His advisers are probably saying to him, do not reply directly to it, but we know that he has an impulse to probably want to reply to it. He has no impulse control. When he feels hes under attack, he feels the need to attack twice as hard. I dont think hell be able to bring down that impulse, particularly because shes winning the cycle. He knows shes winning. And shes coming across far more credible than he is on this. It will be interesting to see how this all playing out. Claire, thank you for joining us. Stick around, we have a lot more. Dont miss kasie dc and the potential implications for President Trump. It was one of the largest protests since the nevietnam er. Will the march bring changes to . It is a powerful and peaceful one because it is of, by and for the young people of this country. My name is cameron. Since the beginning of this movement, people said, do you think changes are going to come from this . Look around, we are the change. That was cameron, one of the more than a Million People taking place in march for our lives across the nation. Heres the breakdown by some of the cities confirmed to msnbc news. Students took to streets in all 50 states and on every continent except antarctica. The rally to urge lawmakers to make drastic changes to the laws and vowed that yesterdays march is only the beginning of what they say will be a big push going into the november midterm. Joining me is daniel daleo, a High School Senior from rockville, maryland, who organized a walkout at his school and attended the march for our lives. Daniel, great to have you with us. Let me begin with how yesterdays march went. Do you keep the momentum going from here on out . How do you translate the crowds into actual gun reform . I think what happened yesterday was spectacular and we need to use the momentum to set us up for the 2018 and 2020 elections in order to vote out all the politicians that are making us unsafe by taking money from the nra and are completely come poli complicit in the murdered in parkland and across the country that we have experienced. And several years from now, given the fact that you are trying to drive Voter Registration to vote in new politicians who are sympathetic to your cause, what will the message be to lawmakers in the midterms just months from now . Do you think your turnout from registration can make an impact over the course of this year . Absolutely. The 2018 midterms will be the first election that im eligible to vote in. And for lawmakers to think they can continue to stand this way, i stay stand up or step aside. If you believe that your right to own a gun is more valuable than my right to live, than i dont think you have a place in our law making system anymore. And we are going to vote you out come 2018 and 2020. You guys are going up against one of the most powerful lobby organizations in the country, the nra. I want to play you a sound bite from them and then ask you for your thoughts on it. So i have to ask, what are you really marching for . Because from where im marching, it looks like a burn to the constitution and burn out the marks you like in crayon. How do you respond to the nra who thinks that your mission is to take away peoples Second Amendment rights . Well, we are trying to get a ban on assault weapons use in the mass shootings. We want increased background checks so peek like Nicholas Cruz cant get their hands on weapons like the ar15. And we want a ban on the accessories like the bump stock to make the weapons more deadly than they are. They are small steps and dont completely destroy the Second Amendment as it is, although i dont really think that the interpretation of it is currently accepted and what it should be. Let me ask you quickly, daniel, about the incident that happened this week, particularly at your high school. One of the proposals that i have suggested is to have armed officers, perhaps even arming the teachers at your school. And we know there was an incident where a resource officer opened fire at the gunman in the school and neutralized them and killed them effectively. Does that make your argument harder for those who say thats the approach we should be taking, arming more resource officers or teachers at schools . I dont go to great mills, but i live in maryland, which is the state in which that shooting happened. But i would like to think that guns dont have a place in school, but just because this country is armed to the teeth, i think that School Resource officers are kind of needed right now. I would like to get to a point where that isnt the case. And that is what im fighting for right now, to just make it so there isnt this easy access to guns to put us all in danger like this. Yeah, it will be very interesting to see how all this plays out come the midterms. Daniel galea, thank you for joining us. Joining me is alexa and terre and matt walsh. Let me ask you about the criticism that emerged yesterday that has become somewhat politicized and debated this march. Let me bring you this sound bite who is a parkland student. Heres how he opened his speech yesterday. First off, im going to start off by putting the price tag right here as a reminder for you guys to know how much marco rubio took for every students life in florida. 1. 05. That was a powerful moment. Some have been very critical of that. Marco rubio tweeted this out yesterday, protest is a good way to make a point, but making a change will require both sides to find Common Ground. Can Common Ground be reached then you think when you see the political divide that exists between what the students want to achieve and what we see today . Common ground is the student we saw just talking about banning bump stocks. The department of justice is saying they need to regulate that. Theres a 90day waiting period to see that happen. But that is not risky for mar marco rubio or anyone to support. They are looking at banning assault weapons, or increasing the limit from 18 to 21 to buy a firearm, that trump said was politically too risky to do. There are small steps, but the things to make it a comprehensive gun control situation would be nearly impossible to find Common Ground. Let me pick up on that, mat. Difficulty in finding the Common Ground. The nra at the same time of the march had a facebook drive to call for new membership on social immediate a. Is it possible to see Common Ground on the weapons ban . Well, your first guest said people on the opposite side of the argument are complicit in the murder of kids. Thats not conducive to convince fence sitters. In the spending bill, the atrocity that was passed this past week, one of the things they said was to fix the background check responsible for john cornyn. Jeff flake is out there supporting and increasing the age to 21 in certain types. Theres a softening in the center, but where this is going to happen is not on the federal level but the state and local level. The vast majority of what we have seen is a mirror image to abortion in the country. The issue was settled by the supreme court. So it is more on the smaller issues and where they play out. That will happen at the state and local level way more than the National Level because we have 350 million guns in the country. Youre not going to convince people that they are not complacent of murder when they dont feel they are. Listen to 11yearold naomi wadler and ill get your reaction to this. Im here today to represent the africanamerican girl stori stories who dont make the front page of the paper. People have said that i am too young to have these thoughts on my own. People have said that im a tool of some nameless adult. Its not true. This is one of the more remarkable, poignant moments in the march yesterday. When you hear what she was particularly talking about, violence against africanamerican women and minorities, and you look at the coalition that is now emerged as a result of gun reform. You have school violence, you have inner city violence, the killing of the armed black people, how potent of a coalition can this be for all the people speaking out for this change . I throuink that moment right there shows how they will be effective more than anyone in the past. That moment encapsulates everything. You have an 11yearold girl speaking with greater leadership and greater empathy, greater compassion than our own elected officials are speaking on these issues. The 11yearold girl showing greater leadership. To matts point, where you are going to see the change is on the local level. Because what people are focusing on with protests, they are focusing on the rallies and the marches. But what they are not focusing on is that the young people are registering people to vote. Theyre having parents sign pledges. To say they will not support politicians who are parents of different parties, too, remember. Signing the pledges to say they wont vote for politicians who dont support gun safety laws. And then theyre going individually to their state legislatures, to their local Town Council Meetings and asking for these changes. And i think that is what is going to make this really powerful and potent. And the messengers are not adults. The messengers are children. And naomi is a good example of how robust this has become. David axios was at an event on friday. And he talked about the wore write that if we have more armed officers or security guards at school, how he worried that could add to the school to present a timeline for minority students. So they are using this platform to create a True Movement extending to gun violence and gun control. The interesting thing is now they are suggesting that the publics attitude has changed about this. They want gun reform. It will be interesting to see what the politicians did to meet the sentiment. Guys, we have a lot more to talk about. So im going to ask you to stick around. Thank you very much for joining us. The National Security shakeup has mixed reaction to the president s decision to replace h. R. Mcmaster with john bolton. What the move could mean for white house Foreign Policy. You were saving other home s. Neighbors helping neighbors and strangers alike. This is what americas about. They would put these signs on the door to let the teacher know you didnt cut off the light. The teachers, they would call us the energy patrol. So they would be like, here they come, turn off your lights those three young ladies were teaching the whole school about energy efficiency. We actually saved 50,000. And thats just one school, two semesters, three girls. Together, were building a better california. The president is perplexed by all these reports that theres chaos at the white house or mass staff changes. He told me that he could see the white house operating like a smooth machine, his words. He did say that hes expecting to make one or two major changes to his government very soon. And thats going to be it. All right. That was trump friend chris ruddy saying more changes could be in the works after the president named john bolton as the new National Security adviser replacing h. R. Mcmaster. Could chief of staff john kelly be next to go . Heres what Cory Lewandowski told chuck todd on meet the press. It is more like how he managed the trump administration. Do you concur with that view . Look, i think thats a scenario that could very well play out. Candidly, im not advocating for john kelly to leave, i think he should say. But if he were to go, theres not one person to step in to take that role. So i could see an area where the president is giving instructions to a small core of group who are on his behalf. Joining me is the former cia director John Mclaughlin and the former Senior Adviser to the Senate Foreign relation committee. Gentlemen, great to have you with us. We have seen this pattern emerge with Rex Tillerson and h. R. Mcmaster, the white house, the surrogates say everyone fine, no changes. And then we see sudden changes. Lets pick up on the possibility that john kelly is removed as the chief of staff. We know john f. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson didnt have chiefs of staff. Jimmy carter didnt for much of his term. Does the president need a chief of staff . You know, maybe back in those days it was possible not to have a chief of staff. But given the complexity of the world today and the complexity of washington and the president s temperament and style, that it would be a disastrous situation to not have someone orchestrating what goes on in that white house. Jamele, to that point that jonathan brought up, thats what john kelly was supposed to do. He was supposed to come in to be the adult in the room as some have said and steady the waters. In reality, he has major debacles. The rob porter case, the Disastrous Press Conference about Maxine Watters and others. In addition, the disparaging comments about dreamers and immigrants at one point. So hes played out not the way hes supposed to play out. Its a challenge. The president is out there on twitter. Hes expressing his views in all sorts of different ways. Its clear kelly has tried to bring some manner of order. John mccoughlin is light, that president needs the order. Kelly hasnt brought it in all circumstances, but hes done a pretty good job given the sort of craziness taking place inside the white house, both on staff changing and on policy, too. Where you have sat in the past, is it going to be helpful for the president to have a chief of staff . I dont think so. This president needs a strong chief of staff, someone like john kelly, to order the process, make sure people are coming in to have conversations with the president and not just putting information on twitter. Hopefully thats not in the headlines like john kelly has been. Well switch gears to talk about bolton as the new National Security adviser. Hes arriving just as the president says he wants to talk directly to north korea. But i want to play for both of you gentlemen what bolton had to say in the past about diplomacy with north korea. Listen. I think the only diplomatic option left is to end the regime in north korea by effectively having the south take over. We had we have fooled around with north korea for 25 years. Fooling around is going to make matters worse. John, hes saying the policy is in the past. That hes going to change, not his views, but the role in advising the president. How likely is he going to impact our positions or the white houses positions on these talks with north korea . Well, you know, ayman, i think we are facing the classic situation we have often in the past of an individual who, if his words are to be taken literally, will be a disaster. And so the question is, can he rise above that . Lets watch his actions and see if he can. Ive just come back from a week in south korea. And i can tell you that what he had to say there is just, a, not feasible, and b, would be foolish. The South Koreans are approaching these negotiations in a very hardheaded, realistic way. And the idea of south korea somehow as he says taking over north korea, its just not realistic. So perhaps this will be his view once hes actual sitting in the chair. People do rise to the occasion. But just take him literally what hes suggesting would not work and would be disastrous. Jamele, one of the things bolton has been known for is his hawkish viewpoints, as we just played there about north korea, but also views on iran. He was an advocate of the iraq war. In hindsight looking back at the iraq war and the disaster and years of pain that has caused, he thinks the invasion of iraq was a good decision for iraq, for the middle east, for the United States. Hes seen as a warprone individual. How is he going to be a good fit for a white house, especially for a president who has campaigned on less wars for the United States . Well, thats a great question. Obviously, john bolton is hawkish. He feels strongly about america leading the world and taking the fight to the enemies overseas, not having them come to us here. And hes been hawkish on north korea, on iran, on the iraq war. That doesnt mean thats how hell act in this administration, but it also does add steel to the president s efforts to renegotiate the iran deal, to get a better deal on north korea. We have had 25 years of a failed bipartisan Foreign Policy on north korea. They have nuclear weapons. Theyre trying to build weapons to reach the u. S. We have to change the policy somehow. And bolton, whitecollar le he hawkish, he brings something to the president for them to think hes serious. Im not saying we need to go to war, but what john bolton brings to the table is that he could help in these negotiations. Mike pompeo at state. John bolton is the National Security adviser. And you have the president. The three are antiiran nuclear deal. They are very hawkish on north korea. What is u. S. Diplomacy going to look like on the world stage with this new access forming . Well, you know, i think at minimum its going to talk tougher. Thats for sure. And jamele may be correct in the sense that that in itself is not a bad thing. It really comes down to what you do and how you act. Take the iran situation, for example. The president has painted himself into a bit of a corner here because he said if the agreement was not improved by our other negotiating partners by may, that he would withdraw. But it hasnt been improved. They have no interest in doing that. And it hasnt been changed. Its too difficult. So come may, were going to find out whether what we see is tough talk or tough action. And i just think were at a moment here where getting into conflict with iran or north korea would be a mistake. It doesnt mean we cant put pressure on both of them on the issues that matter to us through sanctions and such. But i dont think we need another war at this point. Yeah, it will be interesting to see how this plays out when you have so many close european allies not necessarily on the same page as us about ripping up the nuclear deal. Jamele, thank you very much. There are seven investigations on capitol hill. And one of them is ready to wrap up. Next, what it could all mean for trump . And later tonight, 50 years after the assassination of dr. Martin luther king jr. , a new documentary hope fury mlk the movement and the media. How social movements have influenced each other from the Civil Rights Movement through today. Watch it right here at 9 00 on msnbc. So, my portfolio did pretty well last year. Thats great. In truth there are several investigations happening at once, and it is not just special Counsel Robert Mueller doing the digging in washington, d. C. There are seven other russian probes on capitol hill despite the special counsel. The Judiciary Committee along with the house intelligence and oversight committees conducting their investigations into whether the Trump Campaign had ties to russian officials. This week big moves were made in two of the probes. On thursday the House Intelligence Committee headed by California Republican devin nunez announced it would release its report after deciding on partisan lines to end the investigation. Nunez insisting his Committee Found no evidence of collusion. We also found no collusion between the Trump Campaign, but we did find links between the clinton and Democratic Party to the russians. Theres no collusion. If they dont have any collusion, they aught to come out and say if. If they have some collusion, they aught to come out and say it. But it seems to me like this is going nowhere fast. And Ranking Member adam schiff is a democrat who pledges to continue the information without the committees republicans. Suffice to say that the majority was not interest in conducting a further investigation, even when the flaws in what we have done so far have been so apparent over the course of the last week. But our work will go on, nonetheless. We will be submitting minority views. We will also be conducting additional interviews and obtaining additional documents. But the senate Intelligence Committee appears more unified. On tuesday publishing warnings and recommendations about russian interference in the upcoming 2018 midterms. And on wednesday, senate Intelligence Committee members from both parties criticized Homeland Security secretary Kirsten Nielson for what they said was a lack of urgency on her part to boost Election Security measures. At this point, we know for certain that the russians were relentless in their efforts. And also that those efforts are ongoing. And yet when i listened to your testimony, i hear no sense of urgency to really get on top of this issue. This problem is not being treated with the urgency that it deserves. Now with the House Intelligence Committee backing down, the senate judiciarys russia investigation crumbling along party lines last fall. And the House Oversight probe getting ditched when jason chafe chaffetz stepped down. That means that you have the senate Intelligence Committee which has the power to impeach the president and the Mueller Investigation. I just think its really difficult, particularly when you have a case like this, and a client like this, donald trump who i think we all have recognized over the past year or years that he has been running, that hes uncontrollable. He says what he wants. He uses mediums, such as twitter and what have you to go off on people. So he is not the ideal client and im sure that a lot of these attorneys who were saying that they dont want to represent them are doing so with good cause, they want to protect their license, their bar admission. Well talk about that . Just a moment. John let me ask you about joseph dijeevgs he has been an outspoken critic, he has been taking him head on claiming at one point trump was being framed by agents and lawyers, what have you. What would be the consequence, if the special counsel is removed. I think if special counsel is removed, trump will have crossed the most significant line in his presidency. There will be people in the streets im sure, someone like lindsey graham, who has been very supportive of him, has said that this would destroy his presidency. Whether the republicans would have the spine to stand up to him in that event remains to be 16 seen, but certainly, Lindsay Graham suggests that they would so i think it would be a disastrous thing for him. In an odd way, i worked closely with bob mueller during my time in government, and in a way, otd way out there, bob mueller may be his best friend, he will fairly and objectively pursue this, if he doesnt find anything that amounts to collusion or obstruction, he will say so. On the other hand, if he comes out on the other side, people will believe him. Yeah, you would not have gotten that, that he may have been President Trumps best friend, given what President Trump has tweeted about President Trump. Thats been the major change in all of this, is trumps focus on him personally about a week ago, which i thought was a grave mistake, but evidently, i suspect thats one of the reasons. Why john dowd. Is stepping aside, yeah. Matt, let me ask you quickly the white house indicated digenova and thompson may not be on the legal team. They may be advising the president from the outside. We were talking about this in the commercial break. How bizarre or maybe not bizarre in this presidency that you have a president who reached out to invite lawyers to come work with him without Due Diligence to find out they are representing another client in the Mueller Investigation that could pose a conflict of interest. Yeah, who knows if the Due Diligence is that of looks under the hood and saying i got a conflict of interest myself here, i cant do it. It is bizarre, i think donald trump has a history in kind of manhattan tabloid real estate lawyering. That looks a lot different than white shoot d. C. Cover your trackslightering. You can k get there, you do all this kind of stuff. You try i to intimidate, you threaten lawsuits, you do all of this, she trying to do that in a legal tangle right now. No mystery at all why a john dowd or someone else would walk in that case. Because that is a terrible client and the tell was the fame and fortune in his tweet. Right. Lets peck up on that tweet the president tweeting out lawyers would love to represent him. Nobody would turn down naim fame and fortune. What is your assessment . Is that true . There are lawyers that say i dont want to be a part of, or is it rare a lawyer would turn down a high profile significant case . I think any lawyer who wants to keep their law license would run two miles away, anywhere away from. Why . There are so many opportunities for the client to lie. Remember, when you are representing, when an attorney is representing a client, they are not allowed to lie. Now, if a client tells you something and based upon what that client zell tells you, you make a representation to the person who is investigating the case or arbitrator or the judge and that representation is a lie, your reputation and your barred a mission is on the line. There are rules of professional responsibility and ethics that all attorneys must follow at all times. And so thats one of the things that any attorney i think working for trump risks, each and every time he tells them something that isnt true, also, though, i do want to point out one thing, in his tweet he said a new attorney coming on board would take a long time to get caught up to speed, that is very true, particularly, a case of such vulgar in a case such as this, i can imagine the record is incredibly huge, so for a new attorney to come on board right now, it would take a lot of time and money to sort of get caught up to speed. All those factors may be reasons why john dowd decided to call it quits.
