We really need to focus on the harsh reality of which transwomen of color are unimportant, they are five times likely to be unploiped as well as myself. I experience Sexual Violence in the street and i shared that on laverne coxs documentary and when i openly expressed women of transgender this is a harsh reality, we dont have agency we dont have resource let alone language. With caitlin coming out its the beginning of what the revolution of freedom and equality can look like for transpeople. But what message are we sending to transpeople who dont have that privilege and access like caitlin who cannot wake up tomorrow morning and share their story and have 17 Million People watch their lives and share with their family and friends. How about the 40 of youth identified as homeless . I was going to say its a beautiful thing to see the world respond to caitlin in an outpouring of support and love but youre absolutely right about the average trans person out there that doesnt have the Resources Available to them to emerge as a success story, like a Caitlin Jenner. Lets talk about the violence and importantly about the suicide rates within the trans community, because there are so many people that are rejected by their families that come out at a younger age and do not have the support that they need. Talk about your own personal experience going through that. So for me around age 14 i remember those kind of redefining moment where which my family abandoned me because i was attending school in rochester county and there wasnt much resources, as i said before, let alone agency or access for myself. So i chose to live on new york city subway system because i was not only abused in my family neglected by my family, mentally, emotionally, fizz he canally and sexually i know the harsh reality is if i stayed in that environment, i would be more likely to either commit suicide or let alone live in poverty. I understand that sitting here with you today is a huge privilege because its young women like is la nettles had their life taken from them after experiencing rejection from their family. Then you think about people like blake brockington, a young trans men who committed suicide even though he had people like laverne cox and Caitlin Jenner that didnt keep blake from taking his life. Because the harsh reality is we dont all wake up knowing that we can have a better future. We know it can get better but the harsh reality is when you dont have food or housing and dont have equal opportunity in society, in which ways janet and laverne and caitlin may have you understand that its a survival for you. I understand that surviving seems to be a little bit more easier for trans youth like myself versus going out and pursuing an authentic life. As we see Caitlin Jenner emerging to live her best life and use this platform through not only a huge twitter following now but a cable platform through reality tv whats your message and whats your hope for Caitlin Jenner as a role model . Well first i hope that caitlin sees that a story like hers is definitely inspiring and definitely a part of this revolutionary Tipping Point in which visibility looks like for the trans community. But i think she needs to express a little bit more eloquently how that is her privilege. It is a huge privilege and honor for her not only to have the support of her family but not only is it a huge honor and privilege that shes able to go back to a residence and private land. She needs to i pray shes advocating but i hope she gets more involved in the community. We start servicing trans women of color. Im not embracing the reality of which trans nontranswomen of color are facing but its a crucial reality for many trans women of color, we dont have housing or equal opportunity for employment 19 of trans identified individuals live in a household where their income is less than 10,000 a month, which means they dont have the access to be able to go and have a reassignment surgery and facial memization, these things are not reality for many trans genders, let alone im moving from new york state, i refuse to live in a state where im paying taxes and dont have local and discriminatory laws put in place that protects my life when im trying to access housing and education and employment. Thats why im here today in albany hoping to push the agenda all across america. The reality is many of us are not Caitlin Jenner and we definitely and truly humbled and appreciative of her journey.
