Investigate . Harder on her than it is for me. We want on continue to move plus i signed up for this. Forward and get things done. Is the president putting his so it is extremely hard. Own job ahead of the best but youd be amazed at the caregiver community. She had her friends right there interests of the American People . He is actually putting the with her right away. Some of her friends by the way American People first. It is the democrats that dont had lost their husbands just a want to do anything. Couple years earlier. And over on the hill, a newly this is the kind of tight knit community that occurs in the emboldened nancy pelosi told reporters that she would pray military and we should be proud of that. For the president. But we should always be looking for ways to help them. As you have found your way as i pray for the president of a new member of congress, i remember when you were running, you talked about what it might the snuUnited States. Mean to connect with other veterans here on capitol hill and how you might be able to i wish his family or staff would have an intervention for the Work Together more successfully. Have you found that that has good of the country. Happened, have you connected and it was ultimately the with other veterans and how is that applying to your work on president not the democrats who took ownership of the gridlock Veterans Affairs here . And, quote, that is a dangerous im part of the four Country Place for any american president caucus that just started. Were getting our legs under us. Especially one facing reelection a year from now. And we are looking for those so our big question is, who owns bipartisan solutions. The current washington gridlock . And hopefully we find a little joining me now, washington bit of the more controversial post White House Bureau chief topics. Because it is easy to find buy things. We just voted on the secure act. Phillip rucker, politico American People should be happy correspondent anita kumar, and about this. It doesnt get enough reporting former republican congressman that we actually do every once ryan costello. Thank you all for being here. In a while vote on in a great to have you all on set. Bipartisan way. And what issues do you think that you can work on here . Phil, what how does the president sort of justify kind of what happened and does he really think that he comes out on top of this back and forth with democrats . Well, he felt good about the theatrics of the moment yesterday and thought that he won that news cycle of the blast of 30 minutes, whatever it was. But over the long haul, this is perhaps not a sustainable position for him. He is effectively saying i refuse to govern and work with the congress until these investigations stop. But these investigations, if you talk to democrats on capitol hill, they will tell that you they are doing their rightful duty of oversight to look into these matters and that they are following what the voters want them to do. So they are at a stalemate here to peopl clearly and unclear wlahat the in a broader sense, my district president s next step might be. So if the president thought he won the news cycle, so did is always hurt by hurricane the congressional leaders. Season. Laser focused on that. Thats been the focus the i asked nancy pelosi and Chuck Schumer the same question and last couple of weeks. Pelosi spoke to reporters. Take a look at how she answered this question. After what happened, can you theres reporting in recent days, veterans that arent work with him on anything . Of course. Were dealing with a situation that is becoming more citizens are predictable. But i do think that we have a probably something to look responsibility of trying to find common ground. The question being, would into. Ive got a lot of sympathy for they meet with the president people that served and want to after what happened, where they be good citizens, we should be were essentially used in kind of a show that seemed relatively prioritizing them, not just preplanned. People that walk across the what is your take on the border. Potential up side for democrats should be prioritizing visas for and what the president did or 1 interpreters in iraq and afghanistan working for us. It mostly down side . No, i think there is an up those are things that there side for nancy pelosi in that the caucuserallying should be bipartisan support for. You obviouslye experienced r in a way that increasingly smaller proportion of the country has. Behind her. At the same e time, the country i do think both sides will have has been exhausted by wars in to come together though. It is a long stretch to 2020 and iraq and afghanistan. They need each other. The administration seems to be they cant get anything done ramping up rhetoric toward iran without each other. The problem for the democrats, and it includes potentially sending as many as 10,000 troops they will meet with the president within day and then the next day he changes his tune to the middle east. Or changes his mind. Do you think thats a solid plan . So they have to go into it with what are the dangers of a grain of salt. Escalating with iran . And when republicans were running the house, it was the it is actually deescalation, same way. The president would tell you that he was on board with one ill explain why. Thing and then change his mind. We have good reporting that they how did you govern under that have the best of the world in i think two things. Using surrogate operations, first, the party viewed as not being willing to come to the table and 3450e9 with tmeet wit where we have naval forces, other and work is the party that people dont realize there are will suffer. Right now each side will blame the other. And while the president and the explosives brought in by the iranians, theyre expert at democrats fight with one another, anytime that the president gets in a fight with this. Theres reporting theyll use democrats right now, those surrogates to attack u. S. Forces and claim they have nothing to do with it. Particularly House Democrats, it by actually putting forces on is not just a fight between President Trump and House Democrats. The ground, publicly stating we it will be a fight within House Democratic circles on how to respond. Know youre doing this, and and in that respect, i think that the president has the upper we and this is the hand politically every time that consequences of that, it is he goes to battle with 123eer pelosi. To pick up on anitas point deescalating. It prevents the iranians from making a misstep we dont want though, when nancy pelosi went to the white house after the impeachment meeting, if anything them to make. The narrative was democrats theyre trying to goad us into a strike or something that gives divided. This gave her the opportunity to them more leverage on the world stand up there and have them stage, then they can point at the u. S. And say what are they unite behind her. But ultimately tomorrow will doing. The trump administration, their be a new day and you are still statements have been made going to have those in the house clearly, theres no intention of on the democratic side clamoring doing that. For impeachment and i dont i think it is the right move to think that itch has been make sure we have the preventive measures in place. Scratched yet and the more the last but not least, john president says im not giving you these documents, were not going to appear, this is a bunch of hog wash, the more it will infuriate those on the left that walker lindh scheduled to be want to see pelosi move forward released when we have letters that suggest he would support isis, reporting from nbc news. Should he be released . Not h with that kind of with the impeachment dw. Intelligence out there. And what is it about pelosi i have a problem with that. That gets under the president s need to look closer at the case. At first glance, we should be skin . Part of it is that she is worried about and wonder why he effective. This is her second time at house served a short such terrible, treasonous acts. Speaker. Our thanks again to dan shes been able to outmaneuver crenshaw. And congressman, i think that we have a graphic that shows what other president s who were under threat from a congressional investigation did while they were under said investigation. So bill clinton hired new teachers, worked on the middle east peace agreement, Global Warming protocols. Richard nixon did the endangered species act, increased the minimum wage among other things. How can this president say how is it a good idea for the president to say as long as you are sainvestigating me, we willo nothing . I dont think that that was a smart thing to say. And one final point on thanks every time you dont want to work with the other side, you realize that we need them to vote for something and that usually bring them back to the point. A fair point. We are tracking flooding in oklahoma right now where two barges broke loose after heavy storms and ran into a dam before sinking. Local authorities are worried that the dam may not hold. Meanwhile, parts of southwestern missouri are assessing the damage after one or perhaps multiple tornadoes hit overnight. Three people are confirmed dead and up to a few dozen more are injured. Missouris capital Jefferson City took a direct hit. The system damaged government buildings and took down trees. In all the tornado cut a 50 mile path. It was part of a seventh straight day of severe storms in that part of the country. We are thinking of all of those people. Today the socalled american taliban, the first u. S. Born detainee in george w. Bushs war on terror was released from prison early on good behavior. John walker lindh oig fought with the taliban before he was captured in 2001 pe is out on probation. Despite letters that he wrote to an nbc affiliate which he wrote in 2015 which show his support for isis. He wrote, i feel honored to have been able to take part in the afghan jihad and to contribute to the defense of the islamic emrat of afghanistan. Ron mott is joining us from just outside the prison where lindh spent the last 17 years. Reporter it is now official, John Walker Lindh has been released from federal custody. We had a crew camped out here all night outside the federal prison, did not see what we could determine a departure from the prison, but suffice to say he is no longer in prison custody. We believe he was taken to the jurisdiction in which he was convicted, that is the Eastern District of virginia. John walker behinds parenuk ee made arrangements for him to live in virginia. He had to agree to certain prohibitions. Perhaps at the top of that list is all of his Electronic Communications must be monitored by the federal government. That includes the fbi, perhaps the cia as well. That includes cellphone and of course the internet and any sort of communication he condition ducts electronically must be done in english. He is also prehinted from ha e having contact with any known 2ris a terrorist and reading terrorist material. And he has surrendered any passport. A lot of pushback from the family of the man killed. But john walker behind oulk beh been freed. And michael balanboni, i wa to read you a piece of the letter that lindh wrote about isis, and this was february of 2015. They are doing a spectacular job, the Islamic State is serious mr. Fulfilling the long neglected religious obligation of establishing a caliphate which is the only correct method. How can it be that this machine is being released while we know and have material like this . So there is a question as to what the specifics of the federal sentencing guidelines were time served, other issues that have come up that basically gave the federal penitentiary system the ability to let this individual out early. We dont agree with that. We think that he should have served the entire time. Ernl is t certainly the family of mike spann, the agent who was killed, have pushed back tremendously on this. But what you also recognize, this gentleman may still be a threat to the United States. There is concern from the Counterterrorism Community that he has continued to express support as you saw in that letter. And in addition what if you take a look at his history, he was trained by Osama Bin Laden before the 2001 attacks. And yet the cowardly act did not change his idea, his theology. He continued to support and in fact fight for the taliban. And now later on support isis. So this is a guy who is now going to come back to the United States and what is also important to note is that in the next two years, well see upwards of 100 captives just like wli lindh who will be let go as a result of them having done their time. So what does this country do with enemies of this country . And this of course is a bipartisan concern expressed by senators on capitol hill. Thank you very much, sir. Coming up next, the lesson the white house apparently hasnt learned, ignoring the democrats and the courts just isnt working. Ts just isnt working. The Doctors Office might mejust for a shot. Well go live to President Trump at Arlington National cemetery. The president has just arrived there to honor fallen heros in advance of memorial day. He is taking this early trip there because he is going overseas to japan next week, so you can see he and melania are there speaking with some Service Members in uniform. Hans nichols is joining me now. Hans, this trip of course comes in advance of a traditional president ial trip, but the president does have a lot planned overseas thisan over th weekend, so he is getting his trip into arlington now to pay his respects. Last veterans day he didnt visit and he took some criticism on that and then he ended up going back out there in december to lay a wreath i believe it was National Wreath day or National Wreath laying week. It is sacred solid ground. All president s are affected by it. President s since Abraham Lincoln have been visiting troops during the war, during conflict. And this president has made his first trip to a conflict zone this year you will remember shortly after christmas he went and visited troops in iraq. So we will see if the president makes any news or takes any questions or has any comments. You might recall he talks about obamacare when he was there in december of 2018. But we dont know if there will be an opportunity to engage and give us his thoughts. But as for now, the president paying respects at arlington. And do we know which section of the cemetery he is visiting . Reporter i have not seen any update. Section 60 could be. We might be able to tell here shortly by some of the scenes. So i cant say definitively what section it is from looking there. A i reached out here so i didnt get to read all the pool notes. The pool might be saying that right now. But well get back to you on that. The pool is saying that they do think that they will be laying a wreath here momentarily. There are eight active duty soldiers currently placing flags on some of the headstones. I think we will keep an eye on this for now and well of course, hans, keep us posted if we hear anything from the president cho of course is on hallowed ground. And meanwhile, President Trump really wants democrats to stop investigating him. His administration has taken great pains to stone wall any congressional oversight including invoking executive privilege wherever possible and ordering staff to openly defy subpoenas. The strategy ostensibly was to tie the battle up in the courts through 2020. But a new compromise between House Intelligence Committee and the doj alongside a number of recent Court Rulings in favor of House Democrats throws that plan into question. As long time strategist ron klein put it, many pundits are saying that trump can simply run out the clock. The ruling shows that the courts can act quickly and are likely to do so. Joining me now, chris lu and former prosecutor barrett berger. Chris, let me start with you. Are the democrats smart to put their strategy to take it to the courts in this methodical way that nancy pelosi has . Pelosi is smartly playing the long game here. She understands that trump is waging that multifront war. And there are just too many places for the documents to come out. Not only with trump Financial Firms but very soon they will be abletoget his tax returns from the new york state tax commissioner. Former trump aides could be witnesses. Rex tillerson did interviews. So they could talk. Nancy pelosi can tamp down the talk about impeachment because she knows that block by block this lemm case for impeachment is being built. And from the perspective of a prosecutor, how did you see this playing out in the courts . Are democrats doing everything right and do you see a victory for them down the line on these questions . Or are they taking a big risk . Well, the fact that they have now gotten two different strict court judges to issue rulings saying that their subpoenas are grounded and reasonable and have a legitimate legislative purpose is a very good sign. I think obviously once we see what the court of appeals does well know more. But this is the democrats best hope and really their own next step is to turn to article 3, to turn to the courts. And so far from what weve seen from two different judges, they are on the right track. So chris, the other thing i wanted to touch on with you as well is this idea that the president has basically said no way no how am i negotiating with democrats, im not working with you while these investigations are under way. But you served in an era where this was often going on. I mean, if you look back at history, do president s normally when they are being investigated like this actually continue to legislate . Yes, they do. And ive been both sides of pennsylvania avenue and frankly id rather be where the House Democrats are right now in terms of issuing subpoenas rather than receiving the subpoenas. That being said, multiple legislation was passed by the Nixon Administration while watergate was going on. Bill clinton was working on important policies while gingrich was r5beginningingrich him. So the president will get held accountable for the gridlock happening in washington. And lets talk about timing for a second. How quickly can we expect the courts to move on these questions . Because i think a lot of the frustration is coming from the Democratic Caucus and oriented around the idea that if they just wait and see what happens, they are effectively ceding the ground to the president ahead of 2020. The courts can act expeditio expeditiouslexpeditious ly. Is that what we should expect . I think we see that the courts are not willing to let it ride out for months and months. So no, it wont be over next week. But i do think that we will see the courts moving faster than people initially thought. And if you think about it, these are not particularly complicated issues. So i think that we can expect the court of appeals to act within a couple months and then well see where it goes after that. All right. Thank you both very much for being here today. We will take you back now to arrest link ton National Cemetery in virginia where the president is honoring fallen heros in advance of memorial day. And of course his upcoming visit to japan. Joe biden is still the frontrunner, but the women in the 2020 field are gaining ground. That is according to a new poll that shows an uptick in support for Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar while the former Vice President still leads the pack. Joining me you now from the big board, steve kornacki. Steve, what do you see from these numbers . The question weve been asking, biden and then who. You see that they are in striking distance. And interesting to see the movement there. Of course buttigieg you see he has not gained. We talked about his struggles to break out, expand sort of the demographic appeal. No evidence again that that is happening with him. He is in fifth place in this poll. A couple things that explain what is going on, number one, it a look at age. Now, watch what happens. These are voters under 50. Democrats under 50. And look at that, that is a dogfight there. Biden and sanders basically tied with vo with voters under 50. 50 and older, bryden tain biden. But how about this, Bernie Sanders 4 with voters over 50. There he is at 25 under 50. That is just absolutely falling off a cliff. Weve been seeing that with sanders also when you look at gender on this, again among mca within 10 points of biden. Female voter, biden enjoys 37 . I goes up ten points. Sanders falls off and harris moves in to second. Harris by the way doing basically 13 , 7 , twice as well among female voters. And you look at warren and the move shes made, there a demographic component to that. Take a look at democratic voters without a College Degree. Biden out in front. Down here you see Elizabeth Warren at 6 . Now, flip it around, voters with a College Degree or advanced degree, check out that group and you see warren rockets up from 6 to 17 . And that is where warrens surge is coming from of late. Very interesting. The previous set of numbers about Kamala Harris seems to suggest that it is a real thing. Steve kornacki, thank you. And one exception is alley popular democrat is polling ahead of President Trump by double digits in the key states of florida, mama, pennsylvania and wisconsin. Only problem, barack obama, not eligible to run for a third term. But many democratic voters still hold an overwellingly positive view 69 last commander in chief. And as one of my next guests notes, his presence looms large in the 2020 primary. Joining me now is that writer and political analyst. Isaac, what role is obama playing currently in this race and how do you see that kind of carrying through the next several months . He has continued to have this role as the wise elder, some of the candidates are talking to him, they have been talking to him for a while. Some are on the second or third conversations with him. Trying to get a little advice, a little bit of i would if i were there. Up side of running for president , you get to talk to barack obama. But he really wants to stay in the background. And not be leading this conversation, not have the race be about him. That being said, a lot of candidates are friggin out how they relate to the obama legacy, no one more than joe biden, who has kind of wrapped himself in barack obama. He always talks about how great obama was and what they did with obama. And i asked Kamala Harris whether she sees herself as heir to the obama legacy and she said no, i have my own legacy. Eric swalwell obviously not doing well in the polls right now. But he said to me i think obama will be such a great force when he gets out on the trail. So if that is all true, why not talk about him more . And he said im focused on the future and the future is not barack obama in the minds of a lot of democrats. And is this because Hillary Clinton essentially ran to the obama third term and lost . I think some of that. I think the party is changing somewhat. You have medicare for all is the debate that was not part of the obama days. But of course it grows out of obamacare. And also trying to figure out do you want to be seen as going back to obama or do you want to go in a different direction. One thing that were seeing also is that among the kind of what people refer to democratic twitter or the crazy place to be. And not really representative of where the Democratic Party is a lot of the time. And there you see a lot more questions about barack obama and more reconsideration of him. Overall though, in every poll that comes out, obama is wildly popular among democrats and that is something that biden is tapping obama put together a c he a ligs that included people of color and a massive turnout of people of color. How do you see his role here . Because you do have some progressives who are kind of shying away, maybe not from the man himself, but from some of the policies saying that for example obamacare didnt go far enough, why didnt he push for the public option, all these other issue based things. Is it possible to win over the voters that one would need to win the nomination if that is the way you are talking about this president . I think that there are certainly the activist part of the Progressive Left that were not happy with obama when they were president. They were criticizing him when he was actually the president. If you went to any netroots na heckled, booed, yelled at. So i think it is not a surprise that they are critical of obamas legacy and perhaps some of his policies. But any democrat that is running to win this president ial cycles nomination needs to understand that they may not need to go back and try to model their policies after obama, but they absolutely must model their coalition after the Obama Coalition that won two times. And by that i mean they need to take their message and what they are proposing directly to the black community because that is how president obama was elected two times. He lost the white vote two times. Basically democrats get around 40 , that is really the height of the level that they get to in tempts of the whi terms of the quhit vothe white. So you dont need the white vote to win the presidency. So i think once that sinks in and once people where doing the math, they will tailor their message to get to that goal. And i think that instead of modeling your rhetoric or your speeches or how youre campaigning like barack obama, you better be modeling the coalition that you are talking to after barack obama because he was able to be successful two times.
