Sunday, President Trump tweeting a daca deal is off the table. Border patrol agents arent properly to do their job because of ridiculous liberal democrat laws like catch and release. Getting more dangerous, caravans, he says, are coming. Republicans must go to the numerical option. No more daca deal. That is just in part what he said. Geoff bennett covering and joining us live from the white house. What many people are ask, why today and what does this mean moving forward . Hey, richard. Daca recipients, tpresents will. Now President Trump is suggest that go prospects for a deal are off. As to what prompted all of this, the president s call for tougher Immigration Reform followed a report on fox news as you indicated about a caravan of a thousand or so people from Central America making their way through mexico headed to the u. S. Where they hoped to seek asylum. The president then sent these three tweets, one of which calls to an end to protection for dreamers and a threat to dismantling the north American Free trade agreement. Nothing is stopping people he tweets. They laugh at our did you mean immigration laws. They must stop the big drug and people flows or i will stop their cash cow, nafta. Need wall. And the president later on gave voice to the sentiments he tweeted earlier in the day. Mexico has got to help us at the border. A lot of people are coming in because they want to take advantage of daca. Were going to have to really see. They had a great chance, the democrats blew it, they had a great, great chance, but well have to take a look. But mexico has got to help us at the border. They flow right through mexico and send them to the United States. Cant happen that way anymore. Here again, the president s position and the underlying facts appear to be in conflict. He suggests that people are trying to come here from Central America to get in on the act as it relates to daca, the daca policy clearly states that politics must have been living in the u. S. Since june 2007 to be eligible. I reached to Top Democrats on capitol hill, and drew hamill who is the deputy chief of staff for nancy pelosi provided us with this statement. He says time and time again the president has walked away from bipartisan proposals that are exactly what he asked for. When an agreement to protect the dreamers is reached it will be despite this president rather than with his leadership. I would just add people close to the president have said one of the reasons why hes attacking democrats on this daca issue is because he doesnt want the absence of a daca deal to be used against him and the Republican Party as we had to the 2018 midterms, richard. Geoff bennett with the president at the white house. Thank you so much for that great overview and summary. Lets bring in fill leap reigns and jen kearns. Is the president aiming his statements at california . Clearly we have the issue of california threatening to sue against the u. S. Citizenship question on the census and the doj. I believe he is tafrgting california, and i believe california is targeting him right back. You see whats going on in california often reflects whats going on in the rest of the nation. You have the right side versus the left side, and theres no in between here, richard. I think its quite interesting, though, whats going on in california. Ive never seen this before, a situation in which elected officials have so taken the side of foreign citizens over american citizens, and theres a bigger storm brewing. How have they done that . If you look at jerry brown, he took an oath of office to protect against enemies foreign and domestic. Its very clear that some of these criminal, illegal aliens are here and they are intent on harming american citizens. If you look at the five illegal immigrant criminals that jerry brown just pardoned, they are guilty of robbery, dui, which puts the public at risk, and spousal abuse to women. Philippe has something to say. The topics are the you need a young people, those who are brought here without their control to the United States. This is different than the group youre talking about. Philippe, ill let you respond, though. I got to commend jen because she did a great imitation of donald trump announcing coming down the stairs. I think its clear politically that donald trump needs a boggy man, whether its Hillary Clinton or jim comey or Jeff Sessions or, in this case, the state of california. He does that because he knows his people will go for it. And i think its very, very its rhetorical at the least. But the governor arent keeping their oath saying that, its both wrong and hypocritical looking at the patriots who literally has broken his oath probably four or five times since we came on camera. Philippe, why today, though . Why on easter as hes about to leave service discuss this very issue if you are a christian you know the faith itself does hold high children in terms of the importance of family and culture. Why today was this brought up . Richard, you just gave more thought to it than he did. He turned on the television, ehe saw fox and friends, someone determined they did a as he kept on this, and he doesnt know what day of the week it is, he doesnt care its easter. He says what he wants to say when he says it because hes essentially out of control. Thats offensive to suggest the president of the United States doesnt know what day it is and doesnt know its easter. This president has been very clear. He sides with the kids, with daca. He even came to the table a month or two ago and said he would accept any deal brought to him, not a right wing deal or left wing, any deal. And the march 5th deadline came and went and the democrats didnt do anything. Hold on. It was left open. Kids coming across the border, he has not helped. Kids, health insurance, he has not helped. Kids being shot, he has not helped. Of all the people that donald trump has tried to help, kids are not one of them. The Democratic Party would love you to believe this is about mothers and children being ripped out of their homes. This is the opposite. If you want to talk about boogieman, the illegal criminals committed robbery, spousal abuse, dui, and the list goes on. I believe this battle is bringing california and is going to come to a head. My sources say the San Diego County is the next that will be joining in this fight. It wasnt that long ago that we had a recall election in the state of california, you had gray davis there. Some of the parallels exist here. You have a democratic governor avoiding and really ignoring the concerns much his constituents, primary justice in the california recall situation with gray davis, ignoring the Southern California constituencies, which is millions of people. You remember that recall vote was associated with a downturn of the economy, there were a lot of things unique in the storyline of california. I think zimmerman from that great state, and no doubt with the California Republican convention coming up, i know, jen, you will be involved in that. I want to move to another topic brought up on fox news sunday. This is Lindsey Graham remarkable on the move the president made on syria, putting into question about our investment as a country in what has ban longterm conflict as of today. What might that mean and why were not talking about that concern from the United StatesNational Security stance . Were not talking about a constituency. Lindsey graham came out against the president in terms of his current remarks . Unfortunately she comes out one sunday and the next goes golfing with him. Hes not been a profile of encourage as most of the Republican Party the president has no core beliefs, whether its Foreign Policy or domestic policy. It should come as no surprise that he just stands in front of an audience and declares victory. Were leaving syria because we won. We got it done. Give me applause, im out of here. I will say thats not a thoughtout opinion because his own military and Foreign Policy team didnt know about it until he said it. And i dont know why anyone like Lindsey Graham is surprised by any of these things after 15 months. Jen, is Lindsey Graham being fair about it . There are certain topics where she will support the president on, other topics where she will not. Many folks on the right saying maybe not a good choice because youre telegraphing also your next move, which the president said im not going to telegraph. Hes accomplished things in regards to syria. Mike pompeo being promoted out of the cia and into the position of being nominated for secretary of state is because mike pompeo was responsible for some of the key intelligence that led to us finding out that the syrian governor was gassing their own people with chemical weapons that, led to a very pinpointed missile strikes by the u. S. And our allies and saved, frankly, numerous lives. You can have Lindsey Graham out one sunday criticizing the president and the next supporting him is big news. That would be like john mccain supporting one weekend and not the next. The president has done a decent job and surrounded himself with folks who have also done a decent job, mike pompeo being one of them. Philippe, hang on. Speaking of senator mccain and Lindsey Graham. Hes calling out to Mitch Mcconnell at this point. Im saying i worked in the senate for a long time, and surely it can be improved. The problem with how much Mitch Mcconnell has run the senate is that hes doing so only when it is in his favor. Case in point being not allowing president Obamas Supreme Court nominee to come to the floor. Theres a reason why its called a Nuclear Option. If he pulls that pin, he has to be ready for what comes next, it might benefit him short term, but its going to haunt him. I dont know i would do it seven months before the midterms because a year from now his title might be minority leader. I bring up the topic because the idea of senator mccain was brought up. Hes not there in washington, d. C. A lot of those in the right are missing him. And also two senators that are retiring. Normally im critical of things that look hypocritical. Look, this underscores the president s commitment to Immigration Reform, the issue we were just talking about. Thats why he was asked. Once again we see the president trying to solve this problem, and again, trying to offer this deal on daca that the democrats havent yet taken. You know what, richard, they would rather have a Campaign Slogan to hang over this president s election in the midterms than actually solve the problems. Both sides are saying that. So youre saying yes to the Nuclear Option or no . I think so. I think its fair in this case, the 120 nominees waiting to be approved as well, a lot of pressing issues. Philippe . Hes got 200 nominations that he hasnt board to pick. If they want to make it a free for all in the senate, they have to deal with that a year from now. Ill make philippe a deal. You get your party to approve the first 120 and well work on the other 200. He should be able to walk, chew gum and make nominations at the same time. Protest in sacramento, california, overnight for Stephon Clark, an independent autopsy raises new questions about what led to the Fatal Police Shooting last month. The privacy autopsy revealed the father of two was shot eight times, seven of the bullets striking him from behind. Nbcs Steve Patterson is on the ground in sacramento. Steve, you have been measuring the temperature. It can be very, very complex. What have you seen and where are we out of this 11 00 a. M. Hour . I would say the temperature is at a rolling boil at this point, richard. Weve seen protesting just about in some form every day since that video was released of clarks shooting. And generally, broadly, peaceful. Mostly the protesters showed up wielding candles and signs, but as the day turned into night, it got a little more tense. The protesters starting spilling into the streets. Last night those two sheriff vehicles waded through the crowd. They were striking the cars, screaming, and the patrol cars were simply trying to wade through and they struck a 61yearold woman a protest in the crowd. But the speed was so slow that it only caused minor injuries. The accounts from people in the crowd is that this was a hitandrun, pure and simple, they struck the woman and took off. The Police Department releasing that statement earlier last night. Meanwhile, this all follows the tension that was sort of brewing as the week moved on because of that independent autopsy, that familyhired doctor finding most of the shots were in clarks back. That seems to fly in the face of what Sacramento Police said that he was menacing forward during the shooting. Theyre not going to comment until an official autopsy is released by the county. That could take some time and keep tensions high as this whole process continues, richard. Steve, by most accounts, californians would say sacramento is a sleepy town, the capital of the largest state in the union here. From what youve seen, what does what is the governor also doing in reaction to whats happening there . The protesters seem to mostly be local. We saw a large group of those protesters in downtown sort of swarming the Sacramento Kings game in the first few days of the shooting after the video was released. They did that because it was effective, they knew that would be a place in which would be a major focus of people trying to basically get to the game. And they were correct. A lot of the people from this rally in particular last night were from the neighborhoods in this community. The woman that was struck reportedly is a known activist. They were at the Sheriffs Office to make a statement. Steve patterson reporting live in sacramento. In recent years we continue to see protests following the Police Killings of unarmed black men like Stephon Clark as were hearing from Steve Patterson. These acts of civil diso thisk marks the 50th anniversary of dr. Kings assassination. Lest bring in al sharpton. Rev, great to see you here. When we look at whats happening in sacramento, california, this on easter, the day of the resurrection, a day normally of tranquility, think of where we are from what we are, we have to think about this. And we reflect. How do you reflect on whats happening in sacramento . It gives me a real sense of weve come far in some areas, and we are still at the same place in others. Even more dangerous to people that believe in civil rights, were seeing a lot of what doctor king gave his life for, which we will comem on wednesday, is now jeopardize by the domestic agenda. Voting rights act is one of the pillars of dr. Kings achievements. This administration has said, no, its voter repression and voter fraud, not Voter Suppression and the violating of the Voting Rights act. This administration has said were not going to deal with mass incarceration. Were not dealing with police reform. You have a president that has even said dont be nice to people when you arrest them. Dont put their heads down. Which is the opposite of calling for civil engagement. So doctor kings dream is many, many ways being challenged by this administration at a time we commemorate his life. What are you seeing in the equal and opposite against this energy that youre describing, this energy that you feel that is now sweeping the nation . Were seeing a tremendous response to people that have seen a number of abuses throughout the last several years from, Trayvon Martin to going eric gardner in new york. In the state capital of california a young, unarmed man shot mostly in the back. And i think that this is people saying wait a minute, we continue to see this and theres no legislative remedies. In fact, the white house spokesperson said these are local issues. Thats what they said in the 60s about some of the seg garks let the states handle it. Its not local. We need a National Response to policing. We are also watching the story coming out of louisiana, baton rouge, you were there on thursday speaking at the funeral. As you have to do this time and time again, living many years as a civil rights leader past the age that dr. Martin luther king we honor this wednesday, how do you gather the strength each time for these communities and then deliver it . I think the strength i get is in my own Spiritual Life and my own commitment to doing whats right. I grew up in the king movement. I was youth director in new york the year he was killed at the local chapter. But im strength understaened b people that have said, new york city were going to keep fighting. When the family asked me to come do this eulogy, you dont enjoy this, but you dont want to not respond to people in pain that have faith that you can help them through this. How has the message changed for you when youve done these yu . In many ways theyre similar. Its a lot of pain and frustration and a lot of why dont people get it. In some ways its changed because youre seeing younger people that do it their style. When i was young i wore the track suits. That was the style then. It was the rap generation. The style has changed, but the issues remain the same. How about the energy . The energy is the same. Lets not forget, you mentioned easter, Martin Luther king even before i was involved, on good friday he led the childrens marches in birmingham. We see the children being water hosed. Here we are again in the easter season marching in sacramento. Reverend al sharpton, thank you for being here. I appreciate your perspective. Thank you. Together, were building a better california. Stormy daniels lawyer was up early this morning tweeting at 3 00 a. M. About his client and clarifying confusion over her legal battles with President Trump. Michael avenatti started yesterday, be clear, we will never accept any settlement regardless of the amount of money. That does not there mr. Cohen and mr. Trump coming 100 , meaning 100 clean with the american people. People that say this is about money havent been paying attention. Then clarifying his previous tweet earlier this morning saying, remarkably, some seem to be confused as to what 100 clean means. It does not mean being honesty with america, just about the sex. Its 100 being fruft truthful the relationship. Joining me me is danny cevallos. Danny, okay, you have been here just about every weekend talking about what Michael Avenatti is now saying. Hes coming out again hitting hard on the very same points that he was earlier. Why do you think he continues to do this . In a sense, avenattis been consistent and n that he seeks only declare tory judgment, or saying Stormy Daniels can now talk freely about her experience. However, these tweets seem to go a little further. That declare tory judgment doesnt necessarily require Michael Cohen or donald trump to come forward and voluntary say everything daniels says is true. So perhaps any Settlement Agreement would require not money, maybe more than just a declare tory or admission that the account is no good, but maybe hes saying an agreement would require to settle the case trump and cohen to affirmatively come out and say everything daniels has said so far is true. That is quite a hill to climb. I want to share another statement by avenatti. He says here in another tweet, i hope that mr. Trumps lawyers lawyer, david sha wards doesnt get a lawyer, and that instead he tons make as many media appearances as possible. We will even send a car for him because every time he goes on tv our case gets far better and a couple hashtags after that. Break down for us the lawyers lawyers potential lawyer. And why thats working towards avenattis case. Statements of lawyers can be imputed to their clients. Lawyers have to be mindful that they dont bind their clients with their words. Beyond that, schwartz said recently that the president never knew about this agreement and that that was intentional. That statement alone could potentially harm cohen because its an admission possibly that cohen was signing agreements on on behalf of a client without that clients knowledge. But additionally it may establish that trump was not a part of the agreement, didnt know about it, coupled with the fact that trump may not have actually paid, which was one of the conditions of the agreement, and you can quickly see how the statements of schwartz if they bind cohen can create even additional problems for both cohen and trump down the line. Its important to remember in that case like this, even though schwartz has not entered his appearance in the case, he has put himself out as cohens attorney, calling cohen his client. So as with all attorneys, you have to be mindful not to bind the client with an errant statement. As well as avenatti out in front being very forward in statements but not about the potential issues related to the russia question investigating. Pull that all together and how this might link together. There are many ways it could link together. Although on the surface, the daniels issue doesnt really appear to link directly to russia, but as the demonstrates a pattern of practice of cohen, trump, or people in his campaign, it may be evidence of the fact that this is a group of people that had compromising information about them, that they were subjected potentially to blackmail situations, and that they may have been willing to pay off people who had information that was adverse to their position. You can quickly imagine not a direct connection to the russia collusion allegations, but possibly a pattern of practice that has bad implications. Plus Campaign Finance law violations are another possibility too. Right. A lot of different branches to this very story. Danny cevallos there in manchester, new hampshire, thank you, sir. Staff uncertainty. Whos in . Whos out . And what could possibly return to a white house marred in controversy. President trumps former lawyer suggesting parting former aides facing charges in the russia investigation now raising serious legal questions. Eeding. If you spit blood when you brush or floss you may have gum problems and could be on the journey to much worse. Help stop the journey of gum disease. Try parodontax toothpaste. gasp singsong budget meeting sweet. If you compare last quarter to this quarter. Various mmm. Its no wonder everything seems a little better with the creamy taste of philly, made with fresh milk and real cream. We fired the white house claims you resigned. There would no reason for me to resign. I made a commitment, took an oath and i was here to fight for our veterans. Were you asked to submit of letter of resignation . I was not. Denying white house claims that he resigned his post. Shulkin was the fifth highprofile exit in march and rumors are swirling about who will be next, the Washington Post reports the the president is seeking advice from former staffers, among them, Corey Lewandowski, and anthony scaramucci. Joining me now, is Jason Johnson from the root, nancy cook, white house report at politico, josh lieberman, report for the Associated Press of t. Nancy, starting with you. Were looking at the va secretary putting in question on meet the press how the very exit had happened, one has to ask, what will be next and who will be next . I know. It was kind of amazing last week that only one person got fired and that was a quiet week at the white house. I think what im watching is according to my reporting, i think what will be interesting to see is how long general kelly lasts in the chief of staff job. Its a matter of finding someone else to actually fill the slot. And other thing to watch is all these campaign originals like Corey Lewandowski and dave bossy who stayed in touch with the president. They had dinner with him monday in the white house residents. Do they come into the white house at some point . I think thats another key thing to watch. Jason, if you were reading through ax i dont see, which you probably were this morning, and you were looking at who this president reaches out to, there are various names not only fox hosts that have come to the white house to have meals with the president , don king also theoretically. One of the individuals that President Trump reaches out to to get sort of a sense of what people in america are thinking. When we talk about the town, this town, thats washington, d. C. , he certainly seems to have a lot of folks that arent part of this. Yes, because he doesnt know much about washington, d. C. , and is avoiding to get to know anybody in washington, d. C. , look, i go if your a supporter, that makes you happy. But if you care about the functioning of this government, its not a good thing of the hes getting advice from people that he fired or had to separate his administration from. It appears that the only universal that we can find and who donald trump brings into his administration is he knows them personally or he likes stuff he does. You get fired from fox, you end up in the administration. He likes how you do his medical exams, you end up in the administration. Thats what he does. But thats not necessarily the way to run a government and it makes it difficult for people who do care about career Government Organization to be able to do their jobs. I want to look at at least this poll. President trumps approval rating, maybe this practice is working for him. 42 . February, 35 . Josh, despite all these match nations that are happening at the house, maybe thats getting the base for him to grow and attach even more to have that effective tie. Its hard to know whether those changing poll numbers are the result of the way hes handled staffing husband white house or completely unrelated things, but we have to remember, the president gets a lot of criticism for bringing in people who didnt necessarily have a lot of experience. But this is what americans chose. We voted for someone who never served in government and no experience running a sprawling bureaucracy like the federal government and that was the decision we made over someone who had extensive experience in the form of Hillary Clinton and the work of governing. So it follows that at least for trumps supporters, people whonwho wanted things to be shiny up that they are seeing the choices and saying thats essentially what he promised he would do. One of those, nancy, that will be starting in a weeks time, were talking about john bolton, the antimcmaster, some of the headlines have read so far. What would this mean for the Foreign Affairs issues that have come to the plate, come to the table just within the last week . We have the missile technology, the satan 2 out of russia, north korea and china meeting, you name it, theres questions syria was Just Announced by the president , an early withdrawal, at least very soon, and the 200 million that sits on the table. How would john bolton affect the they mattics coming out of the white house . A lot of people think hes going to bolster the president s more hawkish instincts. It will be interesting to see what happens with the u. S. Potentially pulling out of the iran deal with bolton in there as well. Not just bolton, his appointment will have a cascading effect down on the National Security council, and it will be fascinating to see who leaves as a result and what that does to shape Foreign Policy. Jason, whats your reflection on bolton being named . I thought it was horrible and i think its a reflection that this administration not be accident but by seeming effort seems to want men who have personal histories of being abusive to women. When john bolton was up for security adviser position, you had women coming forward saying this man threatened them and chased a staffer the law hallway in a russian hotel. But this administration seems to be filled with people like that. I think this is important to remember. Donald trumps Approval Ratings are always going to be between 35 and 42 , but he keeps losing special elections even when he shows up. So his personal popularity doesnt seem to help. Going back to the issue of daca and immigration, looking at citizenship as part of the census, these are topics hes watching very, very closely, josh, and hes sticking to it, whatever that acceptance rate is. Ten seconds. Theres a few court issues that have been important to trump. Trade, immigration, really disliking the iran nuclear deal. Hes surrounding himself with people now that hes firing tillerson and mysterious and hiring bolton. Josh, you have that mat nettic power. Shifting gears to the russia probe. Reports that trump lawyer john dowd floated the idea of pardons for Michael Flynn and Paul Manafort whos been less forthcoming and wears two ankle monitoring braflg monitoring bracelets. The president s pardoning power is not so cut and dry. Take a look his heavyweights on mess the press. All throughout history we see president s offering pardons. Once you start getting into the area of inquiring as to what the motive of a pardon was you get into constitutionally difficult areas. I have to disagree with the professor. If the president uses a pardon power for corrupt purpose then shes exposed to criminal liability for that. If his lawyer with his authority offered a pardon as a means of tainting or corrupting testimony in a criminal proceeding, i dont see any basis for saying the president doesnt have to answer for that. Joining me solomon wisenber. , whos got it right there in that back and forth . Theyre actually both right. Professor dershowitz is correct when you tube the pardon power, youre looking at the zenith of president ial power. Its virtually absolute power and it is very difficult to do anything to a president based upon his pardoning power. But the other speaker, bob bower, is also correct. If a president said to a potential witness, for example, this is a stark example, said to a potential witness, if you testify the way i want you to, which is not truthfully, then i will give you a pardon no matter what happens to you. That would be witness tampering. Youre almost never going to have a situation where anybody says or does anything that blatant. You really have to have a smoking hot gun to go against a president for exercising the pardon power, at least to go against him criminally. Paul manafort not striking a deal so far, standing strong. We got a lot of those around him that have fallen, if you will, than they have a deal at the moment. What do you deal. Which side of that argument is specifically or potentially related to the case of Paul Manafort . Well, im not sure. Quic keep in mind that two weeks after flynn pled guilty and not that long before the manafort indictment, may have been after the manafort indictment, the president publicly was asked what do i think about do you see giving a pardon and at least with respect to flynn, he said well see. So that is a Pretty Amazing statement. What do you think he was saying . I wouldnt the fact that i dont know what he was saying is a way of reinforcing what the professor said. You can never do anything legally in terms of criminal will ylaw against the president for that one statement. He makes statements like that all the time that violate current norms. But they are not actionable criminally. But that could be a signal to somebody.
