I am ready to do this with you, for you. Im just deeply honored, and im very excited. That was the moment that joe biden asked senator Kamala Harris to be his running mate. Senator harris born in oakland, california, to immigrant parents is now the first black woman and first asianamerican on a Major Party Ticket. Right now were counting down to the first big event this afternoon. Senator harris left her home in the d. C. Area just a few moments ago. This was the scene. First, were already seeing how the Trump Campaign is going to target the bidenharris ticket. When you factor in this pandemic, the economic crisis facing our country and a Racial Justice reckoning, this is clearly shaping up to be an election like no other, and we have a great team of reporters and correspondents covering the historic ticket. Nbcs mike memoli is in wilmington, delaware, following the Biden Campaign, covering joe biden for more than a decade. Ali vitali outside of Kamala Harris washington, d. C. Home. She covered the primary race, and Kristen Welker joining us from the white house as well. Mike, ill start with you. What is on the agenda for joe biden and his new running mate today for that First Official day of campaigning together as a ticket . Reporter craig, the last time we saw joe biden and Kamala Harris sharing a stage together, it was the moment when Kamala Harris endorsed joe bidens candidacy. The objective there for joe biden then was uniting the party ahead of that final key stretch of primaries that ended up securing him the nomination. Today a very different scene, no big public rally, an intimate rally at the school where joe biden typically votes. Well see joe biden and Kamala Harris together along with both of their spouses with a different objective. A source on the campaign telling me that what well hear from them today is showing unit, showing that theyre unified with a shared objective of defeating donald trump. Kamala harris playing that attack dog role very quickly. Shell make a contrast between two different tickets, one a ticket of experience, compassion, justice and leadership. Separately a ticket on the trump side of chaos, division, incompetence and failure, that from a Biden Campaign aide in the last few minutes. Were learning more about the secretive, deliberative Vice President ial search process, one of the most scrutinized in recent political history that cultivated with that phone call, the moment we saw yesterday between harris and joe biden where he asked her if she would serve on his ticket. It was actually a longer process than we perhaps might realizes. Joe biden two years ago, in fact, telling a trusted Campaign Aide as he was campaigning for a number of women candidates, that if he had the chance, if he ran for president , he might very well choose a woman himself for the ticket. Tonight well see the Biden Campaign capitalizing on this new joint ticket with a virtual grassroots fundraiser. We heard yesterday that the campaign had its best hour of fundraising in this entire campaign. What would we typically see, a campaign on the road, putting that ticket to work with joint rallies across the country. Were not going to see that in this pandemic. We will see heading into the convention, a key moment for this ticket next week, craig. Mike memoli, thank you. Well be checking in with you certainly throughout the afternoon. Ali, what is senator harris likely going to bring to this ticket as a running mate, tangible and intangible perhaps . Reporter craig, we always knew that this was going to be a governing pick, not one that took into account geography or the kind of political strategy in that sense that sometimes goes into these decisions, a place that joe biden was likely to win in the general election. But what she does bring here is someone who was able to take its something that probably will be more difficult now going stop to stop in person is a little harder these days given the pandemic. She definitely has knowledge of what the country is feeling right now in add doigs the fact that as a governing pick she has been a state attorney general. Shes been somewhere here in washington who, as soon as she was elected to the Senate Quickly did make a name for herself. Craig, i would make one point that is really interesting. Having covered the breadth of this campaign back in march when Elizabeth Warren dropped out, we saw women and girls who were crying out hoping they would find a way to make history in this election and feeling really let down. I want to contrast that just now as Kamala Harris was pulling out of her apartment. There was a mom who brought her young daughter here. She said because she wanted to show her as many different models of female leadership and women in power as possible. Really that moment of having resurgence again even over the course of the last six months, women and women of color feeling this is a historic moment, craig. Ali vitali there in washington, thank you. Some more details coming in surrounding that event. It looks like its going to start tentatively at 3 50 this afternoon, that first joint event between joe biden and Kamala Harris. Kristen welker, the Trump Campaign already launching some attacks against Kamala Harris. What are we hearing directly from the president . Reporter craig, the president and his campaign wasted no time lobbying attacks against senator harris. Theyre trying to figure out where to land some of these punches. The president retweeting a video to her referring to her as pohoy and criticizing her sharp criticism of Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation process. It is some of that sharp questioning who got the attention of biden and his campaign, that made her such an appealing candidate for a Vice President ial running mate. Take a listen to what President Trump said yesterday in the briefing room. Ive been watching her for a long time. I was a little surprised. She was extraordinarily nasty to kavanaugh, judge kavanaugh then, now justice kavanaugh. Nasty to a level that was a horrible thing. She was very disrespectful to joe biden, and its hard to pick somebody that thats disrespectful when she said things during the debates. Reporter the president also focused on her on twitter. He says Kamala Harris started strong in the democratic primaries and finished weak ultimately fleeing the race with almost zero support. Thats the kind of opponent everyone dreams of. Of course, a little sarcasm there from President Trump. It is notable, craig, before the pick was announced yesterday, President Trump tried to down play the significance of whomever biden was going to announce, saying people typically do not vote on the basis of the Vice President ial nominee. Earlier this morning, Kellyanne Conway was out and trying to make the case that Kamala Harris as the attorney general of california rubbed a lot of people the wrong way on both sides. So again, it appears as though the president s Campaign Still trying to find its messaging as it relates to senator harris. Craig. Kristen, while i have you, all of this, of course, happening in the middle of a pandemic. Millions of Americans Still waiting, hoping to see if there will be another round of relief. Youre there at the white house. Any updates on the relief talks . Reporter no updates so far. Thats what i was told just moments ago, craig. It does come on the heels of President Trump passing several executive actions including one that he says would get relief to americans, trying to restore those Unemployment Benefits. 300 plus 100 that the states are going to have to pony up, still not clear exactly how all that is going to work. Of course, you have democrats out calling this, quote, constitutional slop, saying these executive actions ultim e ultimately are not going to go anywhere and the states dont have the money they would need in order to get those Unemployment Benefits to americans. So a lot of pressure on both sides to come back to the negotiating table, craig. Florida Governor Ron Desantis one of those governors who basically said they cant afford the president s plan. Kristen welker, ali vitali, thank you. Again, that event in wilmington, delaware, set to start at 3 15 this afternoon. Well have it live on msnbc. Mike memoli will be back for that. Im joined now by the speaker of the house, nancy pelosi. Madam speaker, good morning to you once again. Good morning. Thank you for your time. Weve still seen no progress on a round of relief for americans. There hasnt been any contact between Congressional Democrats and the white house. Why is that . Well, because we have a vast difference in our values. Let me first say because you just were talking about our new candidate for Vice President , one point that i havent heard made, and that is Kamala Harris is not only the choice as a woman of color, she is the best person that joe biden could name. There are many people who would do no harm. There are many people who could be president. But to have those two combined with the person he had the Comfort Level with to serve. Its about governance as your commentator said. Its about governance. So lets recognize her not only as the first woman of color to be Vice President , but the best possible person he could have chosen to proceed into this election and, of course, to win and serve the American People. In terms of the negotiations or lack thereof, i was just the my colleagues about how children are affected by these negotiations. When commentators say to me why cant you resolve your differences, because were miles apart. For example, for children in america there are millions of food insecure children in america. We have tens of billions of dollars for food stamps, wic, women, infant and children, food banks, all kinds nutrition initiatives in the legislation, in fact, over 60 billion. The republicans in their plan have 240,000, not million, not billion, 240,000. For families who are concerned about evictions, children ha have housing insecurity is a very threat to their wellbeing. We have the Princeton Eviction Lab and other institutions of credibility saying we need at least 90 billion to stop the evictions and to have not only a moratorium, but money. The republicans have zero in sth their bill. This is so tragically sad, when we talk about children going to school, were very far apart on the money. Theres not a recognition that it takes the same amount of money for actual, for virtual or hybrid, and the president is saying he wants his money just to go to schools that are actually there when nearly threequarters of the Largest School districts are saying that theyre going to be virtual. My final point not final, but for the moment for the children is the following, we hope we can come to some conclusion based on science to defeat this virus. As you know, theres been denial and delay and distortion in that, but that was then lets think about Going Forward. But the disparity in the communities of color is horrible and quantifiable. Just think of this. Children who are hispanic are eight times more likely to be hospitalized by this virus than white children. Children who are africanamerican are five times more likely to be hospitalized by this virus and yet we have this attitude of, well, testing is irrelevant, tracing doesnt really work, masks, forget about it, distancing, dont worry. Thats not scientific. So lets be scientific for the children. So madam speaker, whats next in terms of the talks . If there is this great chasm between where democrats are and where the white house is, where do we go from here . Well, lets just say this. You see some of the statements of the republicans saying theyre glad theres no agreement because they dont want to spend one more upon any on this, and thats maybe 20, 25 of the republican senators. What the president did with his executive orders i correct one of your distinguished colleagues who said democrats are saying its unconscious tushl slop, that was a republican senator who said that. We are unified, house and Senate Democrats for the children, for the people and they are disorganized, in disarray and do not believe in governance or science. So we have to come to some conclusion. We told them well go down a trillion if you go up a trillion for the children. Again, lets meet in the middle. Weve said all of that. But until theyre ready to do that, its no use sitting in a room and let them tell us that states should go bankrupt. The fiscal soundness of our states is essential to the strength of our economy. Actually, though, in our view, its also about honoring our heroes, health care workers, teachers, first responders, transportation, sanitation, food supply workers who are paid by the state. They will be losing their jobs unless we respect and honor our heroes by allocating resources to cover the expenses of the coronavirus that states and localities have incurred as well as to recognize the revenue they have lost because of this and the fact that theyre going to have to fire millions of people, and that goes on to unemployment insurance. So what are you saving . Everybody look at the chairman of the fed and economists, they say pay now or pay more later. In terms of the economy, if we do not infuse more into the economy into fighting this virus so we can open up our economy, so we can send our children to School Safely and the rest, this is only going to get worse. So theres a big difference, and it doesnt help when people say how come you cant resolve your differences. Its a chasm, because they do not share our values, they dont believe in science, they dont believe in governance. As a practical matter, theyre going to have to come to the table. Speaker of the house nancy pelosi, madam speaker, thank you for your time. My pleasure. Thank you. Joe bidens selection of Kamala Harris is, of course, front page news across the country, across the world for that matter. These are the headlines in some of the nations biggest papers. As joe bidens newly minted running mate, senator Kamala Harris has already made history, becoming the first black woman to appear on a major Party President ial ticket. The 55yearold california native is the daughter of immigrants, a jamaican father and an indian mother, both academics who met at berkeley during the civil rights movement. With the fighting spirit i got from my mother reporter while her parents divorced when she was 7, harris has described her mother who died in 2009 as the most important influence in her life, often quoting her on the campaign trail. My mother used to say, dont sit around and complain about things, do something. Reporter in her auto biography, harris writes that her mother encouraged her and her younger sister maya to embrace their biracial heritage. Maya harris paying tribute to her sister tweeting tuesday, that day when a little girl from oak town became the first black woman to be a major party Vice President ial nominee. So proud of you, sis. Harris rose from county prosecutor to San FranciscoDistrict Attorney to California Attorney general, cultivating a moderate political reputation and inviting criticism that she was insufficiently progressive on criminal justice issues. Harris has been one of president s fiercist critics in the senate including when she memorablebly grilled Brett Kavanaugh. Did you watch dr. Fords testimony . I did not. I plan to thank you. I planned to but i did not. I was preparing mine. It was just a horrible thing the way she was the way she treated now justice kavanaugh. I wont forget that soon. Reporter harris now just the third woman in u. S. History to serve as a Vice President ial candidate on a Major Party Ticket is getting some advice from one of her predecessors, the late john mccains former running mate sarah palin who urged her to fight mightily to keep your own team with you, dont get muzzled. Harris addressing students at Spelman College in 2018 says she knows what shes fighting for. Breaking a barrier may sometimes be painful, but it is so worth it. It is so worth it. Ill tell you is because you will be fighting a fight worth having. Worth having his onetime rival is now joe bidens selection. Kamala harris in an suv right now on her way from washington, d. C. To meet with joe biden for the First Time Since he chose her as his running mate. Im Chris Jansing. Having a few technical problems with craig melvin. He may or may not be back inning the final half hour of his program. More to talk about history being made with Zerlina Maxwell, msnbc political analyst and senior director of progressive programming for sirius xm radio, director of progressive media for the 2016 Hillary Clinton campaign and historian john peach chapel, the author of his truth is marching on john lewis and the power of hope, a new biography with an afterward by john lewis. Zerlina, i dont know many womens phones who werent blowing up after yesterday. Tell me about the aftermath. What went through your mind and whats your reaction . Its just the kind of pure joy that you can only feel when you finally see yourself reflected in the halls of power. I think that for so long women everywhere, particularly us since 2016 and that trauma we experienced, have been a little bit low and feeling anxious in covid and anxious in this trump era. I think this is the ultimate validation that women and particularly black women should be in positions of power. I think, you know, theres a phrase, chris, black girl magic. Its an ar fir that black women are prepared. Were excellent and hard working. I think what joe biden did yesterday by selecting Kamala Harris it was an ultimate validation of that truth, that black women are prepared, were precise and ready to leave. We empower this party through our votes and organizing. Now were going to do so by being the second in command if they should go on to win the election. That is a powerful moment. Jon, a woman of color, the daughter of immigrants, graduate of an historically black college. Put senator harris nomination in Historical Perspective for us. Its essential on all sorts of levels, and id like to give her credit and take her as the best person, not just the best woman who happened to be in the mix here, and when you think about that historically. This is a moment not just for senator harris but the next generation of american politics writ large. These decisions often go astray. There are a lot of unmemorable Vice President ial candidates. When eisenhower picked nixon, that set up a generation of politicsment when Ronald Reagan picked George Herbert walker bush, that set almost 30 years of president ial politics. George w. Bush, hell tell you this, would not have been president if his father didnt have the jurn nye he did. Al gore wins the popular vote after serving as Vice President , and biden who is now in this position to be a stabilizing force at a particularly destabilizing moment. It is quite possible that nixon, bush, gore, biden, quite possible that we will be discussing senator harris in that sense, in that context for years to come because she does represent, not necessarily a new america. I always resist that because america has always been diverse, but its the first time in a long time we have fully recognized that diversity. Of course, Kamala Harris has been in the senate since 2016, only the second black female senator. With harris vp pick black women say biden has decided to write us into history. He writes democrats need their most loyal voters and activists to win this election. This time that meant putting black women on the ticket. We heard you talk about this many times before. I do think theres an even broader picture to look at, right . Theres a Record Number of firsttime black women running for office at all levels all around the country. You wonder will it give them a boost. Whats your big picture beyond the fact that obviously shes going to Energize Voters of color . I think what she does is shes a possibility model. Thats a famous cox quote. For so many young women, theyll see someone in a position of power and believe that they can attain that power. After 2016 yu saw the womens march and the subsequent protests and organization and women running for office and women winning in 2018. I actually remember the day of the womens march, chris. We were on the roof, very cold in washington, d. C. , and you asked me is this march going to matter. I remember saying yes, if the women who are outside and taking their voices to the streets can organize and continue to build momentum and to run in their own communities. Thats exactly what happened. So i think in this moment what it means for women and particularly women of color Going Forward is that we are propelling candidates to those positions of power who are also running ourselves. Black women vote at six times higher than any other demographic group. Joe biden reached back and said, im going to give you Something Real and substantive. And Kamala Harris is the embodiment of what i call in my book the end of white politics which is not a politics that ignores what white voters care about, but it doesnt only center what white voters care about. It expands that spectrum of concern so everyones voices can be heard and we can all be seen and felt as valuable in this society. Im so glad you brought up the womens march because there was a palpable sense with you, obviously, zerlina, with so many of the women i talked to out there in washington, that this was a moment. This was a real moment, this was a change moment, but i also remember, john, im old enough to have been a journalist when Geraldine Ferrara was chosen as the Vice President ial nominee in 1984. There was that sense, too, talking to women, this is going to be a gamechanger for women i thought at the time. Maybe i even said it on the air. We are within striking distance of having a woman president. And clearly im not the best prognosticator, certainly wasnt back then. How different is this moment than then . Its different because of the great point about the end of white politics which is a very important argument thats made in my colleagues book. I commend it to everybody. Its important, and i would argue since i have to do a dork jag to stay on brand. Here is my dork jag for the morning. Senator harris even chronologically signifies the most important shift thats unfolding in american life, it seems to me. She was born in 1964 between roughly the Civil Rights Act of 64 and the Voting Rights act of 1965. We have a lot of debate now in this country about should we date the founding of the country from 1619 or 1787 or 1865. I propose at least its fun to think about, were really only about as old as senator hairris is, as a nation state that we understand that is real to us. Here is why. Before 1965, millions of americans were systematically denied the protections of the 14th and 15th amendments to the constitution. Voting rights, civil rights began to widen that mainstream. Hadnt done enough yet but it boosts progress. A bill we dont talk about much which was the 1965 immigration act. That was a huge part of a great society. President johnson signed it. It doesnt get a lot of attention. It shifted the nature of the country, the complex of the country in that it undone the 1924 early stuff about National Quotas which is what kept us in many ways legally from accepting refugees from hitlers germany. So its a big moment in 1965, a big moment of inclusion, of opportunity and, more importantly, of access for all. Rightful access for all. I think, if you look at her, shes 55 i think. The country itself, as we understand it today, is about 55 years old. One of the things about the Trump Presidency is it is a reaction to the reality of that what i would think of as almost harris america. Jon meacham. You say youre on brand, i like that brand. Thank you. Zerlina, as always, a pleasure to have you to talk to at these key moments in our history. Thanks to both of you. Much appreciated. Theres a new coronavirus study thats ringing alarm bells this morning. If youve ever used an ecigarette, you want to hear about this. Were going to dive into it with our doctor on duty next. O of me. Oh, thats a good one. Wait, whats that . Thats just the lowbattery warning. Oh, alright. Now its all, check out my rv, and, lets go fourwheeling. Maybe theres a little part of me that wanted to be seen. Well, progressive helps people save when they bundle their home with their outdoor vehicles. So theyve got other things to do now, bigfoot. Wait, whatd you just call me . Bigfoot . My name is daryl. No uh uh, no way come on, no no nnnnono only discover has no annual fee on any card. Had some technical problems here in the home studio. A special thanks to my friend and colleague Chris Jansing for picking things up. Lets get back to work here. The Coronavirus Crisis continues to rage on this morning as the United States now has more than 5. 1 million cases. More than 165,000 americans have died so far from the virus. In Texas Governor greg abbott Just Announced coronavirus hospitalizations and cases are still too high there to relax that states closures and restrictions. For the past week texas added on average some 7,500 cases per day. The states Positivity Rate right now above 24 . Meanwhile, both florida and georgia reported their highest single day coronavirus death tolls on tuesday. Georgia has seen more than 350 people hospitalized within the last 24 hours. In florida, coronavirus cases in children have more than doubled over the past month. Theres a new study out of Stanford University this morning thats sounding the alarm on ecigarettes and the coronavirus. Teenage vapors are up to seven times more likely to get coronavirus according to the study. I want to turn to our doctor on duty to talk us through the latest developments on the virus and answer one or two questions as well. Dr. Actor thanks again for your time. Lets start with that new study out of stanford on teenage vaping and the coronavirus. It says teenagers who vape are up to seven times more likely to get the virus. What do we make of the correlation here . Thanks for having me back, craig. Great to see you back, also. This is an interesting study because a lot of people would have guessed that smokers potentially are at more risk. Whats interesting here is they didnt just look at people who have symptoms versus not. They actually looked at people who were tested. They looked at people who were tested for coronavirus, and of the ones who were tested, vapors were still significantly more likely to test positive. You cant even just say, well, maybe they were coughing because they were smokers. This is of the people who were tested, presumably many who had symptoms, because this was done, and oftentimes testing was only done with people who were symptomatic. To suggest theres some association between smoking and contracting covid. This viewer question from julie. My 79yearold mother is in a Rehab Facility recovering from a fall and was just diagnosed with coronavirus. She is asymptomatic. Is there anything she can do to stay that way, dr. Akhter. Thats a great question. Im sorry your grandmother got sick, julie. I will say when we look at some of the studies that have been done, the vast majority of people in nursing homes, the vast majority of team who are tested as a screening metric, the vast majority were asymptomatic. And asymptomatic. Some of them were presymptomatic but by and large a lot of them stayed without symptoms. Im not saying that will happen but theres a good chance that your grandmother will stay without symptoms, which is good news. As for what she can do, one of the things she can do is not hang out with people, we dont want her to be around people with symptoms nor do we want them to spread them. Otherwise, just remain vigilant. If shes hydrating well, keeping good nutrition, those are the best things she can do and as long as she doesnt get any symptoms, shell be okay. The vast majority of people dont get symptoms at all. Dr. Akhter, thank you, sir, i wish we had more time. We want to hear all your questions, ladies and gentlemen. If you have any for our experts to answer, tweet them to us, or shoot us an email as well, talk msnbc. Com. Today, a coronavirus town hall along with my colleague jenna bush hager. You can catch it streaming on our website all day or catch it on peacock. Back with me, ian sams, former National Press secretary for the Kamala Harris president ial campaign. You were all smiles yesterday, i should have suspected something was up. You said, quote, imagine the signal it would send to the world if the democrats fielded a ticket that looks like america. Did you know yesterday when we spoke what was about to come . I didnt. You know, i think that the Biden Campaign deserves so much credit, and frankly all the contenders including senator harris, credit for making this announcement on their terms. While chris was hosting a minute ago, we had jon meacham and Zerlina Maxwell on, both talking about the historical significance of this choice. And its really borne out over the last 24 hours. You see communities often overlooked and left behind in our politics, speaking up and saying this is such a big moment for us, seeing ourselves reflected on a National Ticket like this. I think its a symbol of joe bidens commitment to really govern for all of america and build a government that reflects this country, which is such a sharp re ppud pupudiation of wh seen over the last four years from the trump administration. Ian, have had an opportunity to talk to the senator perchance since the announcement . I would imagine its been a bit of a whirlwind since yesterday. I think shes been pretty busy over the last 18 hours. I havent talked to her. I think her and her family are getting swept up into a real rush right now. I think shes on our way to delaware to join Vice President biden this afternoon, what should be an incredible event, talking about their mission for america and what theyre going to do as a ticket over the next couple of months before the election. Im so happy for her, so happy for her family. And really so happy for everybody who has been a part of this process, both her former aides and Campaign Staff who i know are so excited right now, and the Biden Campaign who really has shown such a great commitment to turning, as i said, i think yesterday, following Vice President bidens lead of turning yesterdays rivals into todays allies. I think its a really good symbol for bringing the Party Together and having a lot of momentum going into the election. Something thats getting some attention this morning, ian, is the fact that donald trump donated to Kamala Harris campaign twice as a private citizen, a total of 6,000 in 2011 and 2013 combined. His daughter ivanka donated as well. You told reporters a few years ago that harris gave that money away. How much harder does that make it for the president or one of his family members to personally make the case against senator harris . I think its just further proof that everything donald trump says or does is totally fraudulent. This is a guy who is basically making up a character as he goes along, trying to govern this country, which i think hes pretty much given up on doing, as weve seen over this pandemic. You know, his messaging and his campaigns messaging against senator harris and the biden harris ticket and frankly against Vice President biden over the last six months has been all over the place. They dont have a sense of how to talk about their opponents. And theyre nonsensical and logically inconsistent in every attack they make. I think its trying to sell americans a bill of goods about who these people are and the American Public is just not buying it. You see Vice President bidens growing lead over the last six months as donald trump has been throwing the kitchen sink at him. Theyre going to try to do that to senator harris too as his running mate, theyll throw every phony attack against the wall to see if it sticks. But the American People can see through it at the end of the day, they see a desperate president who has failed to manage this pandemic and save american lives, and theyre seeing him desperate to do anything to cling to power to win in november. I think frankly americans are pretty tired of it. It will prevent them from being able to let these baseless attacks sort of stick on either senator harris or Vice President biden. Ian sams, and again, a reminder for our viewers and listeners on serious satellite radio, yesterday on this broadcast ian did commit to go back to work, so this may be the last time youll get me in trouble, craig. The last time well see or talk to him in a while. Thanks for your time, buddy. And thank you as well for joining us this hour and for putting up with the technical difficulties. In the next hour, new mexico governor Michelle Grisham joins my colleague andrea mitchell. Cl its a reason to come together. Its a taste of something good. A taste we all could use right now.
