Fire. Police say he was armed with a semi automatic assault style rifle. He also had three handguns with him. After a gunfight, he then surrendered to police. David is on duty for us outside the tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh. David, whats the latest at this hour and how is that community doing . Reporter you mentioned the suspected gunman being released from the hospital. Well be watching to see what happens this afternoon. Theres uncertainly about where this is going to take place. He had been hospitalized a after the shooting took place. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Underwent surgery. 1 30 p. M. Eastern time is when we expect him to face the judge here in the Western District of pennsylvania. You asked about the community. This is a Community Still very much in mourning. If you can look behind me here, this is where the attack took place in this building. It has been cordoned off. No cars are passing in front of it. Police officers allowing two or three mourners to cross the street to place flowers at wooden stars of david. 11 of them in total. One for each of the victims of the attack. The morning very much continuing here in Squirrel Hill. All right. David grier for us in pittsburgh. David, thank you. Richard fitzgerald is the Allegheny County executive. Hes the highest ranking official in the county. He also lives in the neighborhood where that shooting happened. This is the neighborhood of Squirrel Hill. Again, this is just outside pittsburgh there. First of all, rich, our thoughts, our hearts are with you, are with your community in Squirrel Hill. When did you hear about what happened . How did you find out what was happening . And what was your initial reaction . I live very close. If you look over your shoulder, thats where the synagogue is if we went that way. About the same distance as my house. My wife was out for a walk. Normally i would be walking with her on saturday morning, but ten days before the election there were a lot of things around the county i was scheduled to do. As i was getting ready for those events, my wife came running back into the house telling me that she had walked up wiland hd the pop pop pop, as she described it. Seeing the Police Cars Come up the street as they crouched behind the cars to exchange gunfire. She came running back into the house. Thats how i found out. I found out long before i would have gotten notified by our Emergency Services and police. Thats how close it hit to home. Whats that whats Squirrel Hill like . Ive come to know it. My wifes family lives there in western pennsylvania, so were around that area a fair amount, but for folks who are not familiar with Squirrel Hill with that neighborhood, with that community, give us a sense of what its like there. Squirrel hill is a very vibrant community. Its the biggest neighborhood in the city of pittsburgh. The city of pittsburgh is a town of about 300,000 people. Allegheny county is about 1,000,003. Squirrel hill is 20, 25,000 people. Its diverse. Christians and jews and baptists and muslims and hindus working together. Im roman catholic. Ive been in this synagogue a number of times as my children were with their friends. Weve been there at weddings and funerals. In Squirrel Hill we work together, play together, pray together and celebrate together. Its a diverse, welcoming community. Ive lived here for 30 years. Its where my wife and i chose to raise our 8 children. Its loving. You can walk the streets. They walk up the streets to the business district. Its a wonderful community. Rich, as you know theres been some suggestion that an armed guard at the synagogue might have stopped what happened there. This is what the mayor of pittsburgh said about that suggestion yesterday. Ive heard the conversation over the past year about how we should arm security guards in our schools. We shouldnt be trying to find ways to minimize the dangers that occur from irrational behavior. The approach that we need to be looking at is how we take the guns which is the common denominator of every mass shooting in america, out of the hands of those that are looking to express hatred through murder. What do you think . In terms of the best course of action moving forward, do you suggest increased security in houses of worship . What about jewish schools . I agree with the my yoayor. The question becomes where do you stop . Where do you arm where do you have armed guards . In front of every synagogue, every mosque, every catholic church, every Presbyterian Church . And then our movie theaters and sports venues, our schools. I know there were talks about Arming Teachers after the florida incident. So the question is i mean, how far do we go with all of this . Had there been an armed guard that would have grabbed the guy yesterday or saturday . Yes, but does that theyre going to know theres an armed guard there and maybe they go somewhere else. I think this is weve got to ratchet down the hate speech and the rhetoric, and really talk about unifying. Its one of the great things about pittsburgh and this community. Were a unified community. Youve seen the outpouring of support. Youll see it over the coming days for the victims, the families of these 11 victims. We know these people. These are our friends. These are our family members. These are folks that weve, again, played with and worked with, and live among. This is a devastating incident, and were going to move forward. Rich, we are with you, sir. Thank you. Thank you. Appreciate being with you. I want to bring in our legal analyst, danny cevallos. More than a dozen state charges. Suspect likely to be charge were told under the federal hate crimes statute. But he is not going to be charged with so far at least, we dont understand hes going to be charged with domestic terrorism. Why not . Theres a strong argument that this conduct does fall within the federal definition of domestic terrorism, and the magic words in that statute are the efforts to intimidate or coerce a civilian population. That is definitely something that could apply here. But practically speaking, some of the terrorism statutes not all, require a finding of a foreign terrorist organization. There may be some difficulty extending that and finding that this is the acts of a domestic terrorist organization. Yeah. It may just be that the conservative approach here is for prosecutors to charge what they know they can prove, what they feel strongly they can prove beyond a reasonable doubt which is that this was a killing or the interference with someones religious exercise of their rights, motivated by a religious animus. Frank, this guy in pittsburgh, the guy last week in kentucky, a Church Shooting that while tragic could have been far, far worse that hasnt gotten nearly as much attention. Of course, the pipe bombings or the attempted pipe bombings all over this country. Does it seem to you, frank, that more and more of our own are becoming radicalized . You know, thats a great question, craig. Its something i was thinking about on the way in today. What youre seeing, absolutely. Its an ideological radicalization thats no different than what we were seeing on the International Terrorism side of things. Folks are getting on those unfettered internet accounts, on social media, and theyre sharing these ideas and its just the outrage, whatever that outrage or is causing the outrage in their minds is actually leading them to act. I mean, its no different than what were seeing in years past when it came to the radicalization of young people, for instance, in regard to isis or al qaeda. Its tragic. And its also a very dangerous trend that were starting to see that folks are actually acting out on this anger. You worked on the Oklahoma City bombing case as i understand it, frank, and, of course, Timothy Mcveigh was put to death back in 2001. Prosecutors suggesting this is going to be a Death Penalty case as well. I want to talk to you about Something Else that always comes up after a mass shooting. We talk about it for a few days and move on. I want to talk to you about guns. The alleged gunman, semi automatic rifle. Multiple magazines. Also carried three handguns. At one point he decided to put pictures of these guns on social media as well. Assault style rifles have been used in at least nine Mass Shootings in the last five years resulting in 218 deaths. This is a full screen well leave up for a while so folks at home can take in the breadth and scope of just a hand full of the shootings were talking about. After each of those Mass Shootings we hear calls of reform on gun laws from a Law Enforcement perspective, frank, what would practical gun reform look like . Practical . More background checks. You know, some of these other proposals that are out there in terms of who can be disqualified from possessing a firearm. Some of this is pretty simple. Some of this is basic. Its connecting all of the databases a little bit more effectively among local, state, and federal entities. So theres plenty that can be done without infringing upon the Second Amendment rights of all americans. Part of the challenge, too, is the fact that the assault weapons are so easily available to so many people. The intent of those weapons in these kinds of incidences is to create mass casualties. And theyre successful at it. I mean, the other part is just taking out the visit ree call and politics. Look at it with common sense. Thank you both. We have two breaking news items to report right now. The fbi, the fbi says a suspicious package was intercepted in atlanta. Cnn has issued a statement saying that the package was addressed to the cable news network. No confirmation yet on whether this is connected to the isnted pipe bomber arrested friday. Pete williams has our other breaking news item. Pete, you have news on the fbi investigation into cesar sayoc. What more do we know there. Reporter first, the fbi hadnt formally confirmed that this is one of cesar sayocs suspected packages, but several Law Enforcement officials tell us they believe it is. It has all the outward appearances. So this raises a question of whether there still could be other packages beyond there in the mail, and the working assumption right now is yes. One question is and this has been a question ever since he was arrested, did he send them all at once, or did he send them in series . Did he send a little at a time and although weve not heard anything definitive about that, my colleague john from wnbc says Law Enforcement officials have told him they believe he did send them over a period of time and may have been sending them as recently as thursday, the day before he was arrested. Now, one of the things that theyll obviously have been doing is looking for Surveillance Video to see whether they can figure out which specific post office or post offices he used, and see if they can find Surveillance Video that shows him when and where at those post offices. They believe he manufactured the bombs in the van, the van that had the stickers on it that you saw when he was arrested on friday. And they also believe that he manufactured them in there and he was living in the van. Now, separately the fbi has been looking at his electronic devices, and looking at how he researched the people to whom bombs were sent. How he got their addresses. How he got research about them. And there are other people, they say, that he researched that have not received any devices. But the fbi believes it has whats call adied a duty to war anyone like this. Theyre sending out teams to talk to they wont give me a specific number, but they say its many people, who he looked at and did research on. Those are mostly political figures. Some journalistic figures. Theyre going out now and telling them we need you to know that cesar sayoc did research about you. So theyre still learning a lot about him and about what he was up to. Obviously its very disquieting if someone receives word he was doing research on him. But one of the reasons theyre doing it is because they cant be search if they sent a package. They want them to know he was doing research about you the same way he was doing research about people who did have devices addressed to them sent in the mail. We need you to know that he was doing research about you, so that you can keep a sharp eye out. Pete, at last check he was not cooperating with authorities. Is that still the case . Is he not saying anything . Thats my understanding. Do they still believe he acted alone or is that part of the investigation ongoing . Its still part of the investigation, but theyve found no evidence, they say, that he was not acting alone. No indication that anyone was helping him. All right. Our justice couldnt Pete Williams with an update. Thank you. Searching for some hope in the wake of the synagogue shooting. Could this be, might it be hopefully a water shed moment to change the heated political rhetoric in our country . Despite the events of the past three days, President Trump seems to have no intention of toning it down. Hes said up is more like it. Hes planned at least ten stops in eight states from now through the midterms. Hes already attacked the media this morning. He plans to deliver a speech and sign an executive action about the migrant caravan. The fact that the suspected shooter addressed hatred does not seem to have tempered the president. David frerchg nch, day millbank theyre both here. You wrote in part trumps america is not a safe place for jews. You write what trumps mote iiv his words and deeds inspire the hateful and violent. Are you saying there is a line to be drawn from the president s words to these two despicable acts . Well, of course theres a line to be drawn, craig. Im not saying you cant get in the mind of these crazed killers. And im not even trying to get in the mind of the president. Im just saying its very clear that the sort of rhetoric, both in terms of scapegoating of vulnerable groups and jews are only one and not the ones who experience the most of this. But also the constant references to violence, approving references to violence. This has to have this sort of an effect on rieling people up and making the crazies, the one who is are hearing voices telling them to be violent, that its okay if somebody in society who is legitimate is condoning that. That doesnt mean we in the media dont share plblame or people on the left dont. We all do. The problem is the guy with the biggest mega phone has brought people in from the fringes by saying your conspiracy theories are valid. There have been critics who have suggested the president knows precisely what hes doing when he talks about globalists versus nationalists. They say globalists refers to jews. Nationalists or white americans, take a look at this. Theyre called globalists. They like the globe. I like the globe, too. I like the globe, too, but we have to take care of our people. We have to. Globalists. That term, david, french, that word, kritincritics who sud the president is sending signals there, could you see why someone might think that or is that a reach . I think its a major reach. Its a shorthand term for talking about internationalists. People wanting the United States more engaged in international arrangements. This has been part of the political battle in the United States for a long time. Its not specifically connected, for example, debates about nato which are part of this. Debates about relationships with south korea which are all part of all of this. That has nothing to do with anti semitism. Its not a shorthand for anti semitism. Thats a major reach. We have to be really careful, and we have to be precise here. Theres a big difference between a bomber who loves trump and targets people that trump specifically identifies in his speeches and elsewhere as being particularly heinous, and a shooter who hates trump and targeted people that trump has not targeted. So those are two very different things. When we conflate them, i think its a problem. David, would you concede, though, that both of these men appear to have been radicalized by some of the nonsense that they have read on the internet . Some of the legitimate fake news . Well, absolutely. We know the bomber was radicalized into sort of this trump superfan community. This dark troll community that many of us in the journalistic world have experienced firsthand. Theres no doubt about that. This other guy, however, i think was radicalized into a different community. Not the trump super fan community. An older, white nationalism, an older white sprupremacy thats existed before and after trump. We cant treat them the same. David, the president doing what hes wanting to do in situations like this as well. Tweeting. There was a tweet a few moments ago calling the democratic nominee for governor of florida a thief. Before that one, this is the president s tweet this morning. Theres great anger in our country. Caused in part by inaccurate and even fraudulent reporting of the news. The fake news media. The true enemy of the people must stop the open and obvious hostility and report the news accurately and fairly. That will do much to put out the flame of anger and outrage. Fake news must end. Uhhuh. Dana gz. I mean, its clearly what hes decided here. Hes going to go out in the midterm campaigns the way he went out in 2016. You can sort of see this happen over and over again. Initially the words appear for him on the tell prompter. He says what hes supposed to, whats been written for him after the pittsburgh attack, and its just it sort of has a halflife and breaks down. Hes back to where he was before, if not taking it even further. And, of course, he knows what hes doing in terms of riling people up. Im sure when david uses a term like globalist, its not a dog whistle. Think about how trump does it. He used the word globalist during the campaign in a speech. The Antidefamation League said please, donald trump, youre playing on jewish anti semitic troeps. Please dont do it again. He responded by putting out an ad not only using the term globalist by putting on the screen the graphs of thr photographs of three jews. I dont think its a reach. More than 13 million voters have already cast their ballots in florida, georgia and texas. Our team of nbc news road warriors is fanned out literally coast to coast following races state by state. Nbcs Steve Patterson is in california. 53 state heats are up for grabs, and we have someone in virginia with a battle cry over alleged Voter Suppression. Steve, ill start with you. Youre in reliably republican Orange County. Early voting started there in california over the weekend. Whats the word . Reporter reliably red Orange County is right. It used to be called the orange curtain. When Orange County went for Hillary Clinton back in 2016, it was the first time the o. C. Went for a democrat since fdr in 1 6 1936. Democratic strategists here say this is a huge opportunity. Theyre confident about voters here for two reasons. One the rhetoric of donald trump. And two, the changing demographics here now more than 20 asian. More than 30 latino. White voters have dropped in 51 to 41 . A lot of shifts here to talk about that weve been talking to some early voters in fact o. One of them, caleb taylor. Youve lived here your whole life. How have you seen things change and what does it mean for the election . Things have changed. And dealing with the election, people now dynamically have really changed in Orange County since i lived here. What was it like for you growing up . It was rough. It was rough. Like i said, African American community was very, very low here. A lot of us were in the military. But now like you gave the statistics earlier about how it has changed. Donald trump does have a lot to do it. Why Hillary Clinton did pick up the votes. Reporter how do you feel about the rhetoric from the president . I dont like it. Its not bringing the people together. I think thats the biggest problem were having. Thats the problem. People not communicating. If people talk to one another, get the idea where everybody comes from, then people would get along. Orange county has really changed. We have people from all over the world here. And we need to talk. Theres people that i dont even know that i try to communicate with. You got people coming from overseas and have never communicated with americans. And that is the biggest problem were having. Caleb, thank you. Appreciate it. Thank you for voting. Reporter you hear the story from caleb. So many are saying the same thing. The dynamics have changed. Its leading for a big mood here for democrats. If they flip the house, it has to go through Orange County here. Thank you. From california all the way across the country to georgia we go where the rights of voters are at stake in a highly controversial election process. We are at a polling site in georgia. The governors race is especially close. Whats the energy like there this morning . Reporter its a lot of energy here, craig. I want to widen out a little bit to show you that some people are in line. This is what democracy in action looks like. Theyre lining up to cast their vote. The early voting has been going on in this state for the past two weeks. Its going to extend until the end of the week. Its made a difference overall, particularly with African American voters. I think weve got a slate of numbers i want to put up for you full screen to show you that nearly 1. 2 Million People have voted early in this state. Thats a record increase of almost 169 over the midterm in 2014. Right here specifically in our county, weve seen a 56 increase in the number of African Americans who are voting early. And because as you mentioned, there are questions swirling around Voter Suppression, its led to a lot of energy having focussed on getting out the black vote. Take a listen. I think its really important, a couple of things that are happen right now. I think the biggest piece is how do we fight this Voter Suppression thats just adding additional unnecessary barriers for black voters to get to the polls . I just decided to go ahead and get it over with. Early voting is very good. I didnt like the long lines or anything. Came straight in and voted. Im a voter. People are proud about being a voter. And because in this race in this state the governors race is a virtual tie. Abrams, the African American woman vying for the governors scott against ryan kemp, the secretary of state. And right now weve heard calls from jimmy carter, a resident of the state. Hes called on brian kemp to resign. Hes head of the election process here in the state of georgia, and former president carter has said that he thinks that kemp should resign because it compromises peoples confidence in the election process. But kemp has been emphatic saying he will not resign. Meanwhile, the voting goes on here in georgia, and will extend until the end of the day on friday. All right. Georgia, thank you. Let me bring in Washington Post Congressional Correspondent paul cain now. Paul, lets go from georgia to florida. You spent a lot of time on the ground there watching tight races. Give us some of the biggest take aways and what are folks who are watching this race just as closely saying about how its going to unfold in florida in. Sure thing, craig. You were at the event, i think, last monday in jacksonville where Andrew Gillum was sort of the sort of the undercard of that event, and joe biden, the former Vice President was supposed to be the headliner, but there was just a tremendous amount of energy in that room as gillum spoke. When it came to biden, biden was sort of well received, but there were people sort of like going to a rock concert where the opening act was more inspirational than the headliner. There were people heading for the exits as biden was speaking. It goes to show a lot of energy on the democratic side. The early turnout numbers so far are just huge. They have 2. 7 Million People that have voted as of this morning. Thats half the amount of vote they had in all of 2014. Now, there is still a slight edge for republicans in early voting. It will really be dependent upon how the independents vote in the race. Do you get a sense in events, like the pipe bombs, im talking about has been mass shooting at the synagogue outside pittsburgh, and im also talking about the Church Shooting that could have been far worse in kentucky. What are voters saying about that . Do we believe these recent events are going to in any way motivate voters . Look, my colleagues have been all around for the last few days, and from south texas my colleague Jenna Johnson was down there, in the republican district. She said people werent paying that close attention to the pipe bombs and stuff, but it will do, it makes it harder for republicans in the final few days to make that argument that theyve been making for the previous month. The liberal violent mobs were coming for regular america. And there have been signs that there are some liberals that have gone pretty far in terms of their protesting of republicans. But now the real violence is coming from sort of right wing fanatic extremists. That argument that republicans have been trying to make and making it to some degree of success is going to be put to the test in the final week. Do most lawmakers there on the hill, republican lawmakers, are they telling you they have found the president to be more helpful or more hurtful out there on the campaign trail for them . I think that would depend on which chamber they are sitting in. In in house districts, where the battle is happening in suburbs and suburban areas with lots of swing voters, wealthy areas, hes not being helpful. What you see in his rally schedule this final eight days, hes really focusing just on senate races and conservative states like montana, missouri, and north dakota. Thats sort of where hes really focusing on, and he may help there and bring back a couple more seats in the republican column. Paul king, Washington Post. Thank you. Earlier on the today show i sat down with carrie washington. We talked about the midterms, and we talked about the importance for people of color, especially, to vote. How do you feel about raising children in the world that we live in now . In a country that we live in right now . I think this is such an important time, because i think these midterm elections are an opportunity for us to take our feelings around how our communities are being managed, and take action with our vote. You know . We elect our sheriffs. We elect our local judges. We have the power to have a say in our communities about how our communities are run. Thats why its so important that no one can stay home in these midterm elections. Washington added it doesnt matter who you note for, though she did clearly seem to Favor One Party over another. What matters she said is democracy is safer the more people who participate. Pop politics. Young voters are rallying around legalization of marijuana federally. The fbi atlanta bomb squad is investigating another suspicious package addressed to cnn. We cannot officially confirm if its tied to the man accused of sending pipe bombs to others. Cesar sayoc will face a long list of charges including illegal mailing of explosives and threats against the former president. Nbcs Kerry Sanders is live in miami with the latest. Lets start with the developing news. What do we know about the latest suspicious package . Reporter well, heres the challenge. As we look at a street in atlanta thats closed off. It leads to the post office where the suspicious package was found. The suspect who is in custody here in miami who later this afternoon will be in a courtroom here in his first appearance has not spoken to the authorities since he was taken into custody. I spoke to one of his three attorneys who met with him over the weekend here. Attorney Jamie Benjamin told me sayoc decided to invoke his right to silence, and so he is not speaking. So there has been a great concern that this suspect here not only allegedly mailed these 14 bombs but that there may be others in the mail stream. The authorities in atlanta are looking at the possibility that this could be yet one more of the bombs that were mailed by the suspect who is in custody here. Now, our colleague at wnbc is telling us that his sources in Law Enforcement are telling them that they have recovered what appears to be a long list of people who this suspect here had and numbers into more than 100. A list of people who he may have decided to send other package bombs to. And so the authorities are proactively now reaching out to the people on that list to tell them they need to be very conscious and aware of the possibility that something may show up at their homes, at their offices that could be one of these package bombs. And, of course, as our colleague Pete Williams has reported, and the authorities are also telling me as theyre investigating. Theyre trying to determine where it is that the suspect here may have first introduced these packages into the mail system so they can go back and look and determine okay, how many packages were mailed . Were they mailed in one giant bulk drop . Were they mailed over a day after day after day . But at this point right now, were waiting to see maybe this afternoon in the courtroom if the magistrate here can compel them to speak to answer the question has he mailed more and how many more. All right. Kerry sanders for us in miami. Thank you. Meanwhile emotional and Material Support for the families of the victims of saturdays shooting in pittsburgh is coming in from around the world. One issue that seems to be energizing young folks in michigan, pot politics. Wh what are you learning good sir . Reporter good morning, craig, yeah, if youth voter turnout is already higher around the country, it is going to get a lot higher here in michigan, pardon the pun, but that has so much to do with marijuana, marijuana is front and center on the ballot, and especially in colleges like, this medical marijuana has been legal here for some time, so youve got smoke shops, theres a dispensary right here. Proposition 1, the goal there is to make medical marijuana not just medically legal, but recreationally legal too. Take a listen. Everybody i have been talking to is divided on this issue. I feel like this is one that so many people from so many different ideological backgrounds are coming together. Im not the most politically knowledgeable person. I typically would not be excited to vote this time around, but having cannabis on the ballot, led to learn about other items on the ballot. Reporter to marijuana basically put you on the path to Civic Engagement . I guess you could say that. Reporter here is their predppr prediction, they think that that issue is going to turn this state blue. They also think that because michigan is centered right in the middle of the country and because we just saw canada legalize, that this may be the turning point to make marijuana legal all across the country.
