Cabinet meeting today. The russia still targeting the u. S. . Is russia still targeting the u. S. , mr. President . Despite the fact the question about russian interference it was only question asked, the White House Press secretary later said that trump was saying no to something else. I had a chance to speak with the president after his comments and the president said thank you very much, and was saying no to answering questions. The president and his administration are working very hard to make sure that russia is unable to meddle in our elections as they have done in the past. Despite multiple people in the room understanding that the president was bombeding to that question, and despite he said no, no, no, to ushering people out of the room. Youre saying it is the reverse. I talked to the president. He wasnt answering that question. He was saying no, hes not taking questions and im stating what our position is. So this is the second time in three days that the president has come out and reversed actually, im interpreting it. Im not reversing it. I didnt take it the way you did. Well, the continued nonchalance about the future of russian attacks comes days after his director of National Intelligence dan coats come paired to Cyber Attacks to 9 11 and delivered this ominous warning. Im here to stay warning lights are blinking red. Again. Today the Digital Infrastructure that serves this country is literally under attack. Russia has been the most aggressive foreign actor, no question. And they continue their efforts to undermine our democracy. Well, the president s answer today suggesting that russia is no longer targeting the United States is consistent with what he said over the weekend in helsinki. He doesnt know whether he believes his own director of intelligence. Here he goes. Your dni dan coats said the infrastructure is at a critical point similar to what it was in some ways before 9 11. That were susceptible or the a large scale attack. Do you agree with that . I dont know if i agree with that. I would have to look. I dont know whether i agree with that. I have to look. After all this, the president got another chance at a doover this afternoon. He was asked once again whether he would back the assessments of the Intelligence Community and you was once again asked whether he blames putin. Youre saying you agree with u. S. Intelligence that russia meddled in the election in 2016 . Ive said that before. Numerous times before. And i would say that that is true. Yeah. But you havent condemned putin specifically. Do you hold him personally responsible . Well, i would, because hes in charge of the country. Just like i consider myself to be responsible for things that happen in this country. So certainly, as the leader of a country, you would have to hold him responsible, yes. Joining me now, thehi washi post, charlie sikes, editor of the weekly standard, and the adviser. I agree with you. I heard what you heard. Why does Sarah Huckabee sanders, what is her job . A criminal defense attorney who has to give the case, the story given to her by her client . It just seems like shes spitting out what he told her about whether there is anything logical about what she has to spout. Reporter she is the spokesperson for the president of the United States. What she said to us today, the president specifically told her personally and directly that he was saying no, in an attempt to get reporters out of the room. Thats what Sarah Sanders came sxak related and said when she was in the room, when she watched this, she did not interpret President Trumps response to my White House Press colleague from abc news the same way that other people in the room, including my White House Press colleague of abc news did. So there were a couple of things that made us go back and follow up to sand orders this. Im going on name three of them really quick will. Number one, in the video that we watched, the president appeared to look the reporter in the eye and say no in answer to the question. Others in the room also thought it was very clear the president was directly responding to this question. Number three, every single interaction ive had with donald trump in which ive tried to shout questions at him in which hes been in the oval office, whatever, not once has he said no to indicate hes done answering questions. Theres a certain rhythm to how that happens. And typically the president will not answer or just say thank you until we stop asking questions and get ushered out of the room. Today could have been the first time. Theres a first time for everything. There are these reasons why it seemed very fair to follow up on this. Do you believe Sarah Huckabee sanders was conveying the truth or the whole thing was cover up again . It was very revealing about where this administration is. Theyre staying gop is taking a tough line on russia, pointing to sanctions, to other efforts. Yet the president s rhetoric continues to be pretty soft publicly. He does not have a coherent way of taking a tough line on president putin of russia. This puts him at odds with his administrations own policy and the administration over the past week has continued to have to explain and explain again the president s answers. For some republicans, it is still not sufficient enough. A distinctive thing, he goes back to the russians are the good guys. Hell do other things with hes monitored by his cabinet, or being corrected by his Vice President or secretary of state, and weve seen it in the last 48 hours. Hell do what hes told when they spank him. But his instinct is to say the russians the good guys, were the bad guys. This is a nationalistic president who says the other nation is at fault and what we always thought was the good guybad guy relationship, that theyre good guys. The russians are right. Why . If he acknowledges that it is ongoing, if he acknowledges that as dan coats says, this is a 9 11 type attack, then he has to acknowledge that what happened in 2016 was a big deal and every instinct in his body is to dismiss it. To push it away and say the investigation is a witch hunt. The donald trump you saw in helsinki is the real donald trump. Thats what he believes. Your country. He didnt win states like wisconsin. He ran in those states and did well by saying no more stupid wars. Were doing things for ourselves. Were looking out for ourselves and only us. Now hes looking out for russians. Why . Whats the disconnect between the candidate and the president . There is not a disconnect between president and the candidate because donald trump has always been for donald trump first and foremost. And escapable of wrapping himself in the gauze of patriotism and America First and pretending to be the strong man. The reality is, that he was weak on russia. Hes been weak and craven and, this should not come as a shock. This was evident during the campaign. The question is whether supporters will notice the man on the white horse is the one who wants to hold Vladimir Putins umbrella. Theres a disconnect there. In his press conference with putin, President Trump spoke approvingly of putins proposal to merge russian Law Enforcement efforts with those of the United States. Such an unprecedented and awful agreement would allow kremlin officials to question american citizens, especially michael mcfaull. Today, press secretary Sarah Sanders said the president is still considering putins absurd proposal. Here she goes. President trumps support of that idea, is he open to having u. S. Officials questioned . The president will meet with his team and well let you know when we have an announcement on that. Is that something that came up . There was some conversation about it. In wasnt a commitment made. The president called it an interesting idea. He said it was an incredible offer. He said it was an interesting idea. He didnt commit to anything. He wants to work with his team and determine that there is any validity that would be helpful to the process. Minutes later, minutes later, the spokesman for the state Department Said that russias allegations against those american citizens they want to question are absurd. The overall assertions that have come out of russian government are absurd. That they want to question 11 american citizens, and the assertions the russian government is making about those american citizens, we do not stand by those assertions that the russian government makes. Heres an easy one for you. This is softball and hardball. I dont understand why a president of the United States would listen much less parrot back russian proposal for russians to monitor the investigation of russian interference, dissxrupgs discrediting of our democracy. Let the russians judge the behavior . Its insane. Worse than absurd. Its worse than that. Not only is he basically saying, go ahead and let the russians sit in judgment of whether or not they interfered in the first place. He is also saying that people like former u. S. Ambassador to russia mike mcfaull should be subject to interrogations by russians. And when Sarah Huckabee sanders was pushed on it, she said well, they might have a valid claim. We have to test whether the russians are right about this. Thats selling out american patriots like mike mcfaull and say lets hand them over to putins guys. This is the same dereliction of duty that we saw throughout the entire press conference. To go back to what charlie was saying before, this has been of true of donald trump since the first minute he stepped into the campaign. Unlike every other issue, with Vladimir Putin, he cant bring himself to do it. The question, you keep asking why is a question the American People are increasingly going to be asking themselves. Let me go back to howie. I thought today i saw something of a profile in courage. The reporter refusing to be used to shut up the reporters. That person refused to offer up a question to the press secretary unless she continued to listen to your queflt i thought that was great. It was so much different than the reporter from cnn who was glad to go i know what the white house clamming up for reporters. Youre talking about today, jordan fabian from the hill who, when Sarah Sanders turned to him after our question and answer session said, ill let howie finish her thought. I tweet out, a classy move. A really important part of our jobs, covering this white house, and it is really good to ask them. There have been instances in the past when reporters will ask the same question that another reporter has been asking. There is another way to get these followup questions in. It is not a matter of members of the press corps ganging up on the press secretary. It is a matter of questions not getting followed up and reporters trying on get answers out of official in the white house. Do you think youre breaking the kremlin style press coverage . Kremlin style press tutelage by the white house . In what sense . What do you mean . Well, it seems like they have the right to decide what questions theyll take. That seems like kremlin style pr relations. Sarah sanders, any other official can decide which questions to answer and which ones they would not like to answer. President trump can do the same thing. When were asking him, he can choose not to answer questions. It speaks to the importance of what we saw three times overseas. The president holding a News Conference and being essentially requiring to anxious degrees these reporters who were directly asking him, as you saw most vividly in helsinki. And then denying what he just said. Democratic senator jean shaheen has proposed the president s interpreter should have to testify before congress. I think it is important for us to know what was said in the meeting. It is clear theres no transcript. Yet the russians seem to know what was said and what was agreed to. I think it is important for congress to know that as well. In if the president is not going to share that with us, then the interpreter may have that information. What are the chances of getting that done . Im the first to admit, i would love to have that interpreter as a source. You dont see Mitch Mcconnell who controls that kind of thing as the republicans are that you aring for that to happen. What does mike pompeo say when he comes to capitol hill next tweak testify . He is the lead diplomat of the United States. Was there a deal cut behind the means . Did the president have some kind of agreement that is evolving behind the scenes about syria, ukraine . We have very little knowledge. Thank you. Coming up, spy games on the same day President Trump is deng russian influence on the United States, an accused russian agent, a spy, was tried in federal court today. She is being charged as an unregistered Foreign Agent who tried to trade sex for political influence with the Republican Party and catch this. The National Rifle association. Plus, as we approach the midterm elections, what are the democrats planning . And then for 2020. In a bout for the king to win, what about the democrats . And the former fbi chief jim comey is back in the limelight urging americans to vote democrat this fall. The hardball round table weighs in on that. And the biggest story as trump continues to contradict his own director of intelligence. And finally, let me finish with trump watchful this is hardball where the action is. Today, maria butina was ordered without bail. And the prosecutors argued she was an extreme flight risk. That she would skip out of the country. The department of justice portrayed, she was in regular contact with the fsb using sex and deception to forge important political connections. Working covertly, she established bank channel lines to organizations which include the National Rifle association. They quote, these lines could be used by the Russian Federation to penetrate the u. S. National Decision Making apparatus to advance the agenda of the Russian Federation. The Washington Post reports it was those contacts that landed her on the fbis radar. For more, im joined by ken delanian. What do you think she was up to in the United States . It seems like a great story here. Reporter its incredible. She was an agent of influence. Shes not accused of trying to get military secrets. Thats why shes not charged with espionage. She is accused of trying on build a back channel, to specifically republican politicians through National Rifle association. It is amazing. Those of us who cover this case closely have known about her for some time but never in my wildest dreams did i imagine the fbi would uncover a plot this elaborate. That she was in touch and being handled by russian intelligence officials. Dont forget, her main handler was alexander torshin, a russian banker who tried to broker a deal between putin and trump during the campaign. He was trying to meet with kushner. He ended up being with donald trump jr. So this appears to be a russian operation to infiltrate the nra, republican politicians, to essentially build influence in washington which is more valuable in some ways to the russians than the secrets of the f35. We wont be in a shooting war with russia any time soon but theres a lot of diplomatic back and forth. As weve seen this week. And it is important to have allies in congress. A couple of restaurants in washington i will not name them, that have a history of spies hanging out. And sort of the color of the game. And i think today they had the feel of it. When do you go from being an agent to being a spy . Someone involved in subversion, really. So he hit the nail on the head. She is an example of someone we know right now, and there could be more to come. She was acting, using her position here to try assert influence on american politics on the Republican Party in particular. As opposed to someone charged with espionage. Under the technical sense of the statute, would it require someone to be taking information or something of value to the foreign power or a person not authorized to have it. Right now we dont have any indication that she was doing that. It should be said that there could be more to come. As everyone knows, there could be superseding charges. And sometimes prosecutors want to charge what is more easily chargeable. You would be reporting back information as you sought more information. You would be saying, heres what i heard. Heres what i found about a connection from somebody to somebody that could be useful. It seems you are reporting back information. I think theres overlap. The espionage statutes are very particular, the more narrow, it seems like what they went with here. Were not saying she couldnt be charged but for now this is the broader statute. It seems to capture more correctly the nature of what she was trying to do here. As i was saying, they may not want to reveal other information about what she was communicating back. That might lead to revealing classified information. So this is a safer course. She was trying broker between donald trump the candidate and putin. Weeks after announced for the presidency, butina was able to question him on russian sanctions. This is an open conversation here. If you would be elected president , what would be foreign politics especially in the relationships with my country, and do you want to continue the politics of sanctions, or you have any other ideas . I know putin and ill tell you what. We get along with putin. I believe i would get along very nicely with putin. Okay . And i mean, where we have the strength. I dont think you need the sanctions. I think we would get along very, very well. Well, donald trump wasnt the only high profile republican official that butina had access to in the runup to the election. She met with the wisconsin governor, scott walker, rick santorum, and the former governor bobby jindal. What do you make of these contacts . It looks like she was trying to do something active. Right. The question really is, was she trying generally assert influence in the Republican Party . Or was she in some way connected to the influence operation with respect to the election . And you know, i know there was some reporting about that question. That clip that you played of her asking trump that question. That seemed very planted if you will and he had a very prepared answer. So it does make you, one wonder, from the prosecutor perspective, wondering means investigate. So im sure if there is a connection between what shes doing, what shes done, and the attempts to influence the election per se, that is when it would come into mueller territory. Do you think they were trying on get candidate trump on the record . I think youre right. This started as something by the russians. We wonder how the Republican Party which had been hard line on russia for years, suddenly became so sympathetic to russia. This is one of the ways. This was a secret russian operation with backed by russian money to influence republican politicians and she was part of it. It was separate. It looks like it was separate from the trump, the russian effort to meddle in the election but it may have come together and thats why mueller is very interested in this. There is a salacious aspect of it. This woman is accused of using sex to get a job. She was living with a republican political operative. So just a fascinating tale all around here, chris. How handy. What is the Winning Strategy for democrats in 2018 and 2020 . When a party knows they cant win an election, like the gold water crowd couldnt win in 64 against johnson, they did what they did. When the democrats knew they couldnt beat nixon, they can what they felt like saying and they ran george mcgovern. In 1992, when they needed to win after three straight elections, they ran clinton. A guy who knew how to win. Is 2020 striking you as the democrats will do what they feel like, say what they really believe or the year theyll try on win it . Your thoughts . 72 or 92 . You bet, chris. It will be a year where we both win and it do what we ought to be doing. I got reelected in 2016. I was the only democrat to get reelected in a statewide race in a state that donald trump won. Donald trump won by 20 points. I won by 4 points. And i did it by getting out. By doing things. By not just talking to identify democrats but by getting out and talking on folks. I think that well be coming in strong into 2020 and in these mid terms. By actually being for some things and not just exclusively against donald trump. Will you be more like bill clinton or Hillary Clinton . Im down in santa fe, became the national chair. I think thats where, look, right now the Republican Party is going so far off the rails on the right, that anything the democrats do, okay, thats way progressive. I think what we need to do is stick by our pocket book issues. Making sure that every american can be lifted up. And then well do just fine. That strikes me as the kind of message i love. I love pregting social security, medicare, looking out for people with some form of universal coverage. The job markets may be okay for low income but not so great for starting a career, an enterprise or something. What do you do to fix it . For the second time in three days, President Trump has seemingly contradicted his own Intelligence Agency on russias malicious activities toward the United States. In his first briefing in 16 days, White House Press secretary Sarah Sanders made a weak attempt to cover up for the president s remarks that he made just three hours earlier today. While daniel coats said the has not the same degree of Cyber Attacks as in 2016, he gave this warning on last friday. We fully realize that we are just one click of the key board away from a similar situation repeating itself. Susan page, ken, and jonathan, how many times does the white house have to clean up for donald trump . Well, were counting. Day three. Right. It is like they do a walk bablg back and then a half twist and then we have to return. It does raise some credibility problems for the president and the press secretary. If any americans are confused about this, this has to leave them kind of confused. It goes to the idea that he didnt win the election fairly and he didnt win it big. So in his mind, any admission that there was an outside force of any variety really undercuts it. And thats why you see him struggling. Even as he will admit it. He feels the need to justify, no, he won it scare quarterly and russia was not involved. Let me add one more thing. What were seeing is a very familiar pattern. The same after charlottesville. The first time president says something, thats what he means. He gets the blowback. He gets a hostage message his staff makes him read and then within hours, he goes back to the original message. Today we got the message, as ken was just saying, russia had nothing to do with. This i won fair and square and there was no collusion. Thats one part of it that is Ronald Reagan like. Thats what at the when he came to arms for hostages. Anyway, you can add james comey to the list of republicans who are calling on republicans to vote for democrats. Others include the republican strategist Steve Schmidt and george f. Will. Comey tweeted, there Republican Congress has proven incapable of fulfilling the founders design that ambition must counter act ambition. Policy differences dont matter right now. History has its eyes on us. There it is. Theyre all saying, these are hard nosed republicans saying, vote democrat. I wonder if they mean it. Apparently they are meaning it. Your thoughts. They do mean it. Whether it has any expect the an open question. It poses questions for those in the elite including the folks you just mentioned. They may want to speak their conscious. For folks currently in office, thats a tougher thing to do. They know the base is not with them. For comey in march, i dont know if this will have any great effect. He is a despised figure on the right and a despised figure on the left. Many blame him. He was reopening the investigation into her emails. I dont know that he particularly, despite he has tried to cast himself as a moral voice here, holds a lot of political weight. I have a different view on this. Yeah. Comey is a republican and hes telling people to vote democrat. But i believe that comey is taking the, hes being an american here. Our constitution, our government is a threepart government. The executive, the legislative and the courts. Do you believe him . Do you believe george will will vote for jamie . For Maxine Waters . Theyre not going to do it. Why do they say it . No. The point is when you dont have the legislative checking the executive, the thing you have to do. You bring in the people you think will bring in control. I am sorry. I think it is good rhetoric. A former white house stenographer who worked under president obama and briefly under trump said trump is avoiding having his meetings recorded. The truth is his adversary. Weeks later, when i recorded the president s interview with bill oreilly, i watched with disbelief as the White House Communications director hope hicks summoned mr. Oreilly so he could speak to mr. Trump privately. In my five years with barack obama, off the record discussions happened. When the president spoke with a reporter, his staff made sure to have a stenographer present so there could be an official white house transcript in case the reporter came out with an inaccurate quotation. That was then and this was the trump era. Your thoughts about not having a transcript anymore available. Even to the white house. Well, look. I think for President Trump the truth has been, speaking the truth has been a bit of a disability. For him to get into a fight over what he said, what the reporters think he said, it makes him the winner of the battle. If he goes tow to toe with journalists, his base will believe him. So this is a defensive measure. I think this is important for reasons beyond the moment. This is part of the his, toal record. It has been an important part of the way president s have operated in modern times, to make sure there is a full record of everything he says so historians can look at it. It is not just a momentary preference by a president to not use normal procedures for conversations with foreign leaders, another important difference with this. It was done by armed forces to keep the records. Anyway, a program note. Well have the white house stenographer. Her name is dori stein. It will be fascinating to have her on with us tomorrow. The roundtable up next. Youre watching hardball. To warn of the incoming attack on america. Today we have to acknowledge what our president wont our democracy is under attack again. Donald trump praises Vladimir Putin and meets with him on foreign soil, while rejecting our own Law Enforcement officials who say putin launched a hostile attack on our last election and is planning to do it again this year. Why would an american president want to meet with a dictator whos trying to undermine our democracy . Is trump again getting played by putin, or is he conspiring with a man who helped put him in office . If paul revere and other patriots had waited to act until it was safe or politically correct, we would never have the country we have today. Its time for congress, republicans and democrats, to put their political interests aside and act on behalf of our country.
