Ernie banks, the man chicago new simply as mr. Cub has died. He was 83 years old. Somewhere tonight ernie banks is saying lets play two. The nfl breaking its silence, saying it has not yet come to a conclusion on reports that new England Patriots cheated. The pats are trying to move on. I aint worried about no balls. The inflight shopping guide files for bankruptcy. You might be able to pick up one of those statues cheaply. On cbs this Morning Saturday. If you want to intercept the ball, you use your teams ball not the other teams balls, which is a little homophobic to me and i think the nfl could do better. Captioning funded by cbs and welcome to the weekend. We also have some outstanding guests this morning including chef mark vidal who brought the cuisine of his native bars low country barcelona. Youll meet him in the dish. And tv on the radio. Theyre winning all sorts of praise as one of the best of the year. But we begin with the first really big storm hit the east coast this winter. In the northeast several inches of snow have fallen in new york and new england. May get up to 6 inches of snow. In pennsylvania snows mixed with sleet and rain south of pittsburgh. Storm warnings are in effect and millions of drivers are facing hazardous travel conditions this morning. Lets get the latest on all of this from meteorologist ed curran of our chicago station wbbm. Ed, good morning. Elaine good morning. This is the storm that moved through texas and the gulf coast states and is now riding up the east coast bringing rain and snow and ice conditions as well. Right now you can see the progress of this as it starts to head up into new hampshire, up toward maine dumping a lot of snow along the way with the winds coming down off this low thats sitting off the coast here. We have winter storm warnings and Winter Weather advisories that stretch all the way up into maine. And some of the areas in the pink here, the winter storm warning, could see a final storm total that comes in between 6 and 10 inches of snow out of the storm system. Heres the way our futurecast looks as we progress through the afternoon. Toward the evening hours setting up the snow through boston on up into maine and continuing on its way as we go into the nighttime hours. And lets look at the second storm system. This is a clipper thats coming down through the Great Lakes Region. This will dump a few inches of snow in the chicago area and continue on its way sunday night, ending up on the east coast for those of you who may not have received enough snow as we head into early monday morning. As for everybody else were looking at some pretty decent temperatures. Since january, 81 degrees for los angeles. But look at this. 35 in fargo, 36 for minneapolis, 41 for chicago, 52 degrees in st. Louis, and warm temperatures, mild temperatures for this point in january before it all changes about a week from now and we see a real change from this mild condition. Elaine . All right. Meteorologist ed curran in chicago. Thank you. Now to the story thats still captivating the sports world. Its a tempest in the nfl teapot about underinflated footballs used by the new England Patriots in their afc championship victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Anna western never is in foxboro, massachusetts, with the latest on this. Good morning, anna. Reporter good morning. After days of silence and waiting for the nfl to say something, the nfl people has confirmed it is investigating and it has found evidence that those patriots footballs were underinflated. In a statement friday the nfl said its working to find out why the balls were inflated below what league rules allow and whether any noncompliance was the result of deliberate action. They said nearly 40 interviews have been conducted but did not say whether they spoke with Quarterback Tom Brady. To investigate, the league has hired both a law firm and the company that it said has sophisticated forensic expertise to w. H. O. Can assist in reviewing electronic information. The nfl takes their time. They try to figure out whats best for their brand. Reporter he said for the nfl its a question of how does this latest brewing controversy affect a brand worth billions of dollars. I dont think it helps any time you see your logo or nfl shield dragged around. It certainly raises the consciousness of what people think about in the public who may not be focusing on the nfl. It creates opinion. Reporter its a valuable logo. Revenue from all teams in 2013 was 9. 5 billion, more than cocacolas revenues or the Gross Domestic Product of mull ta. Its expected to bring in 4. 5 million for every 30second commercial spot. Those sponsors matter. Kind of the back channelling that goes on is something you dont think about as a fan, but you know if theres a problem and anheuserbusch is upset with something, someone is on the phone both with nfl to the Brand Partners and the Brand Partners coming back and saying, hey, we dont like this what are you going to do about this. Reporter but some in the sports arena have something to say. We take that and we rub it a shoe polish and grind it down because you want it more oblong so you can cut the air and spin it through the air. This is the first ever time in my football career that ive heard of the psi term. I had no clue how much psi was ever supposed to be in a football. The nfl says its going to conduct more interviews in the days ahead which makes you question how they got into the championship game. It wont be resolved until the biggest weekend of all, next sunday. Anthony and elaine . Anna werner in foxborough. Thank you. The big question is this. Will the kroers affect next sundays game when the patriots take on the Seattle Seahawks on super bowl xlix. We head to coach Bill Belichick and tom brady this week. They do their very best impression of sergeant schultz, i know nothing. Do you buy it . I really dont. You go back to 2007 and spygate was that situation. We all know they were indicted. Basically they recorded defensive signals from coaches which is totally illegal and they said the same thing. Coach belichick said hey, didnt know what was going on. Since hes the ceo of the operation, he knows exactly whats going on inside and outside the lines, so i dont believe it. And the nfl is looking at it. They leased a statement saying over the past essentially daughters over 40 interviews have been conducted including personnel, game officials and third parties with relevant information and expertise. How is it that tom brady was not one of the 40. Elaine how could they not send an investigator during the three days to the press conference and say, tom brady, did you know what was going on. This is the nfl at its best which means at its really worst. Roger goodell has been there eight years, the commissioner nearly eight years. Theyre reactive not proactive. Its the most popular Sports League in america by far, the super bowl will be insanely viewed and yet were dealing with this. Im getting tweets saying leave brady alone. Are we making too much about this . Do you think its going to affect the patriots . I dont think its going to affect the patriots at all. Maybe for pete carroll and the seahawks but in terms of tom brady, its not going to affect him at all. Hes been to a record six super bowls. If he win this one, will be number four. Bill belichick, i think it affects his legacy. He was involved with spygate. To me he has a bigger scar on him that he did not have before regardless of what happens in the super bowl. Jordan schultz, thanks so much for being with us this morning. Thank you. This doesnt end. Hall of famer ernie banks is being remembered this morning as one of the greatest players in baseball history. Mr. Bangs was known as mr. Cub for 19 seasons in chicago. Time now for morning rounds with cbs medical correspondent dr. Jon lapook and cbs contributor dr. Holly phillips. First up this week a new warning that ecigarettes may not be as safe as they seem. The new england journal of medicine says ecigarette smokers are five times more likely to get formaldehyde ref he related cancers. What is this saying . Its in fabrics and glue and in regulated tobacco cigarettes. So researchers wanted to know if ecigarettes also expose users to formaldehyde. So they took an ecigarette in the lab, it was a highpowered ecigarette called the tank system. They created a vapor and studied that vapor. What they found is at a low voltage, there was no formaldehyde exposure bchlt u if you heated it up five volts specifically, there was almost two and a half times the amount of formaldehyde you would be exposed to if you smoked a regular cigarette, so it was a lot. Holly, the American Vaping Association says this study is flawed. Why . Basically there are a lot of critics. Theyre saying what happens in the lab doesnt necessarily pertain to real life. If you smoke an ecigarette at a high voltage, it tastes terrible. Nobody will really enjoy it so users arent likely to do it that way. Still i think its important to know that theres the potential for exposure to formaldehyde. John,in jon, weve been talking about that on this show. Is this changing that . Anthony we have no idea of what the longterm safety of these ecigarettes is. After all, youre taking the liquid heating it up sucking it into your lungs. Its not fdaregulated. We dont know exactly what chemicals were inhaling into our lungs. And do you really want to do that door you want to have the fda more involved in doing that. The fda is very very vehement that they want to get more regulatory capacity here, and i think were going to see that in the not too distant future. Our next story mark as medical milestone in research. One third of those cases will involve a severe comma. Doctors often tell families to constantly talk to their loved ones, even if theyre unconscious, but the question always remained, can they hear. Well, for the first time, science may have an answer. Reporter four years ago godfrey had his hands full. He was a new dad and an inspirational youth pastor in southern california. Then a brain hemorrhage left him in a medically induced coma. Doctors told his wife corinth he may never wake up. It was devastating. Reporter corinth never lost hope. She talked to her husband constantly. What would you say . Just prayed talked to him. Reporter after three months godfrey woke up. Theresa pape works at heinz vchlt achlt hospital in chicago. Researchers performed brain scans on 15 coma patients. When they heard unfamiliar faces the brain showed little fwifbt when they heard flair activity saying their names or talking the scans lit up. Something as simple as telling stories can help heal. Reporter papes team also asked the family to record themselves talking about experience. They were given headphones. His wife talked about their wedding day. The other seven were only played seven. All eight who heard stories had quicker recoveries. The bottom line is we can do something. Reporter godfrey now writes devotionals for his church with his ipad. It helps him to communicate. Do you remember hearing these stories when you were in a comasome. Yes. What did it mean for you to hear those voices . I thought it was kind of comforting to think they were there with me. It was comforting that they were there with you. Reporter comforting also to loved ones who now know science has answered their question. In many cases, they can, in fact, hear you. Ben tracy, cbs news irvine california. Its amazing. Jon, i wonder what exactly is happening in the brain when patients hear familiar voices. Well, the mri study shows you light up language garage centers and areas of the brain. The thing is you may be priming the brain for subsequent stimulus like kickstarting it. We used to think you couldnt repair the brab. We now know the brain can repair itself, rewire itself, and this may be a way of getting things going. Holly, what does this Research Mean both for patients and for families . I think its incredible. Not only will it help patients get better faster, but it does so much for families. This gives families a sense of control, a sense that they can really help their loved one just by talking. So its going to make a big difference. And we should say this is a very small study. Eight people got the treatment. Its a specific type of a coma caused by traumatic brain injury, so its not all comas for all people. Okay. People often say are you sitting down before they give bad news but you may want to stand up when you see this. A new study says people who sit too much every day have an increased risk of serious illness. Jon, what illnesses are you more at risk for if you sit down a lot . Heart disease, cancer diabetes, early death. The worst stuff. All the worst stuff. As bad as you can get. But then how much sitting is too much sitting . I spoke to dr. David alter whos one of the lead authors for this. He said it was so interesting. He said four hours or less you dont really see a big effect, but over four hours of sitting you start to see a risk. As you get to eight or nine hours in the waking day, then you start to really increase it. So if you start a regular exercise program can you erase the effects of that . Well, this is so interesting, anthony, so normally the increased risk we mentioned is about 15 to 20 increased risk. If you do no exercise whatsoever, so the double whammy of youre just sitting around and youre a lox and youre not doing any exercise at all ever then it goes up to 40 . If you do exercise it goes down to 10 increased risk but not down to zero. So during the day, you have to do something. Right. Well, next new evidence about the advantage of having a partner. People are twice as likely to stop smoking and exercise if their significant other does the same. So, holly, tell us more about this study. British researchers looked at 4,000 couples and they found three specific health goals. Quitting smoking, losing 5 of your body weight and increasing your physical activity. Not surprising they found if one partner did those things the other partner was more likely to. They were dramatic will i more likely to. For instance if one partner quit smoking the other was six times likely to follow suit. What if your partner is already fit and healthy . To me this was the most interesting aspect of the study. Change seemed to be more influential than consistency, especially when it comes to weight loss. If both partners are overweight and one loses weight the other is much more likely to lose weight. If one loses weight and the other is normal weight it didnt make much difference. It didnt help the person lose. It was the change that really motivated it. All right. Dr. Jon lapook and dr. More americans are and its really having an impact on the hotel business. It says the Online Service that pointed travelers with rooms to rent is currently booking 37 million room nights a year. Thats huge. Onefifth of the number of the giant Intercontinental Hotel group from last year. Lets hear more from cbs travel editor Peter Greenberg. Good morning. Good morning. Imagine this. 25 Million People booking rooms through airbnb. And theyre not just rooms. Anything from winnebagos to theyve got 600 castles on the list. Youve about got 13 million of market valuation on airbnb alone that surpasses Companies LikeIntercontinental Hotels. What are the Biggest Challenges it faces . Heres the thing. Ice on the storm this morning meteorologist Katie Fehlinger in the Weather Center with the latest. Yes, we did very well with snowfall totals, Lehigh Valley ended up being the big winner pick up anywhere from six to 8 inches out of this storm. But i cant say that were completely in the clear just yet, folks. We take you out there, you can see the brunt is through, now more of new england concern but we continue to see the back edge of this storm still, back over western pa, and until that crosses through, you see how the moisture continues to stream in from the south. So were going to have these additional rounds of occasional rain, ice or snow, maybe mix of the three, plain one or the other. But the point is, were not completely done yet. Though again the brunt is over. Now, later tonight we completely clear out. In fact, i say as early as this evening. Tomorrow brief break. Next clipper is already here on sunday night, more snow on the way nicole. All right katie thanks. And a company set up to arrange private plane flights the way uber finds you a car ride has run into a big snag. The faa. Well tell you how flight now is fight back. We begin this half hour with Winter Weather. A whopper of a storm hitting the east coast. Several inches of snow has fallen in new york and new jersey and parts of new england are expected to get as much as 6 inches . South of pittsburgh, snow mixed with sleet and rain made travel hazardous. Meteorologist ed curb of our chicago station wbbmtv tells us about the track of the storm. Well anthony and elaine we have the winter storm warning in the pink area here. Winter weather advisories as well that stretch all the way up into maine and some areas in the pink here could see by the time this is all done a total accumulation of anywhere from 6 to 10 inches of snow. Its rain and its snow. Its the same system that brought snows to texas a couple of days ago and is tracked now up the east coast and this is the progress of it as it continues on its way, bringing snow to the new england states. Well watch this continue. Futurecast shows you that as time goes on we set up snow this afternoon that finally moves on its way this evening. And then once this is out of the way, we set our sights on the Great Lakes Region where we have a clipper that will come through and bring a few inches of snow to areas like chicago, then continue to the east. And as we get into sunday night and into monday, it sets up in the midatlantic states. So were watching snow and were watching very mild temperatures around much of the country. 81 around los angeles. Look at these. These are january temperatures. Very mild stuff everywhere we look here so enjoy the mild weather and be careful in the snow and ice today. Anthony and elaine. Meteorologist ed curb out of chicago. Thank you, ed. Now taking the shine off the super bowl. The mystery of the underinflated footballs use by the new England Patriots when they beat the Indianapolis Colts last week. Patriots head coach and their quarterback both insist they know nothing and saw nothing. Anna werner is following the story and joins us from the patriots home base headquarters in foxborough massachusetts. Reporter well, the nfl for the first time is investigating and has found that the football used by the new england pat troits in the championship game were, in fact underinflated. They say they have hired both a lawmaker and Investigations Firm which they say will be looking at electronic and video information. Theyve also done a lot of interviews. In their statement the league said over the past several days nearly 40 interviews have been conducted including patriots personnel, game officials, and third parties with relevant information and expertise. They reportedly hour have not spoken with Quarterback Tom Brady or any other players for that matter. To speak with player they would have to have a players representative there by the players side. So at this point it looks like theyre going to do more iner is ter views and that means likely there is no resolution of this matter before the super bowl. A lot of people are waiting to hear the results of this but theyre also waiting to see the big game and for the nfl the question is whether they can wrap this up before the super bowl and at this opponent it looks like anthony and elaine, theyre not going to have this wrapped up by that time. The French Laundry put the value at more than 300,000. Thats about 4,000 a bottle. The wine turned up this week in greensboro, north carolina, but so far no arrests have been made. A very different sort of criminal activity is the focus of a trial now under way here in new york. It involves an online drug and gunselling operation called silk road. Federal prosecutors say the defendant turned himself into a oneman drug lord running the largest website ever created to anonymous hily buy and sell Illegal Drugs and weapons. He used a pseudonym. Good morning to you both. Good morning. Rikki, lets just start off with talking about why this case is so important to the federal government. Its critical to the federal government. If i can anal jazz it this way if you go into a bazaar and youre buying legitimate goods and you can go around the corner into a dark alley and get illegal substances we dont want that dark alley to exist. So if we look at what were doing with the web, you have the internet. Anyone can go. You can buy, you can sell. But underneath in the deep web we have an area where this young man, according to the government, has made a decision that hes going to run an illegal drug empire. Now, whether he hosts the site, administers the sight, has anything to do with the site the u. S. Government says youre complicit. It doesnt matter if youre a buyer or a seller, and we need to stop you. Swift and certain prosecution and ultimate certain punishment. Andrew you interviewed him by email three months before he was arrested. Im quoting what he said. At its core silk road is a way to get around regulation from the state. The state tries to control nearly every aspect of our lives, not just drug use. Whats the evidence connected Dread Pirate Roberts to ulbrecht . They literally caught him with his fingers on the keyboard while he was logged into the silk road. He was working in a Public Library in San Francisco. Once they seized his laptop they found he had kept a journal for years, if this is in fact his journal. His defense team claims its not. He doctored this website for years. This past week we also heard from one of his College Friends who he at one point confessed to running the silk road too. So this is going to be a very tight case for ulbrecht to get out of. Theres another website free ross. Whats important to know about him . Silk road is not just the kind of cyber or criminal scheme. It was really meant to be a radical libertarian political experiment. If this was, in fact russell, he was trying to carve out a space online the government couldnt reach. Both he and his persona were these anarchist characters who talk a lot about the violence of the state and the need to hamper to limit regulation. But ross in his offline life was in every way according to his family and his friends a great kichltd he had a masters degree in materials science. He was an eagle scout. Everyone loved the guy and he was kind of the last suspect you would imagine to be an online drug lord. Who has turned into a narcissistic personality. Rikki, very quickly here he said he sold silk road and was framed by the people who bought it from him. Do they have a case . I think that the defense has really to do a hail mary here. The governments evidence is really overwhelming. If he touched it in any way, he is complicit. We cant allow this activity. If youre looking also you can finance terrorism this way, you could plan terrorism this way. In a quest to protect privacy you cant go to this level. All right. Rickykki kliemany klieman, a andy greeneberg up next, youd think that being the host city for the super bowl would be a huge boost for the local economy, right . Super bowl host cities can see a Major Economic boost when the nfl comes to town but the mayor of glendale arizona, home to super bowl xlix is questioning the moneymaking potential of this years big game. David begnaud spoke with the mayor and looks into costs and benefits of hosting the nfl championship. I think if you looked in the till at the end of the day, i think youll have less money in it than came in. Reporter mayor jerry wires suspects that when the sun sets on super bowl xlix the only real loser may be his city of glendale arizona. You expect to spend how much . Im sure that were going spend 3 million. You expect to make how much . I would hope in tax revenues we could actually account for well ore a million, probably 1. 2, 3. Reporter roughly that would be a 2 million loss. Hes basing his projection on history. When glendale hosted the super bowl in 2008 the city estimated it lost 1. 6 million. We brought in less money than we spent, bottom line. Reporter the biggest expense then and now . Public safety. How much does that Public Safety costs . It ranges from 2. 5 million to 3 million. Reporter and thats just one of a list of expenses the city has to accept when it hosts the world east largest day event. Among the expenses parking lot, police escorts, parking lot, catering. The value that theyre bringing to that city definitely far outweighs the demands they put on the cities or what they have to sub kuk to to host the event. Reporter the nfl says its spent as much as 600 million to city for the benefits. Some economists lower than number to 50 million. In nearby phoenix mayor greg stanton sees more benefit than risk. Look. If you want to be in the super bowl hosting business thats not a lot of negotiation that goes on with the nfl. They have certain requirements but i think its great to put our best face forward for the rest of the world. Reporter theyre building a disneyland arcade of football memorabilia and entertainment that has in the past attracted 200,000 fans. The downtown area will be phoenix. Im not upset about that. We dont have the restaurants and things in glendale that wed need to accommodate that many people very the greatest benefit to glendale may be the public exposure in front of a worldwide audience. Theres a big, Big Marketing value there that people pay millions and millions of dollars for. People try to put a value to that. I think they estimated last time 13 million if you had to pay for that exposure. Well thats pretty substantial, but hue doow do you go back and verify that you got benefit from them . Reporter questioning that and other assurances made by the nfl has left wires with what he calls a lukewarm relationship. I need them more than they need me but my first overall responsibility is to my citizens. Overall, worth it . With the expectations certainly. Reporter for the mayor its worth it to have one of the worlds most popular games touchdown. For cbs this Morning Saturday, David Begnaud, glendale arizona. Its tippicedlyypically done on pilots boards at the airport. Im flying to marthas vineyard. They say okay lets take the same concept and put it online. The reporter the faa says not so fast. They say the small plains were operating as commercial airliners but without the scrutiny that airlines receive. Good morning thankfully we can report the brunt of the storm happened justly just overnight. Now seeing the bulk of it pull away. The problem is we need the back edge of the storm to completely cross thats going to take some time. So lets take you to the radar. Well show you whats been going on, the heaviest of the moisture is now more of new england concern, you see the back edge, little thin line of snow through central pennsylvania, we need that to cross before we can say we can wipe our hands clean of this storm. So youll still find some additional and occasional showers of rain, ice snow, not necessarily adding much to the totals weve already seen but enough certainly to maybe slow you down. Quieter by really as early as six7 00 p. M. Tonight by tomorrow night next round of snow already here. Thanks, carol has been live for us in the cbs3 mobile weather lab in medford, what can you tell us, carol . What are you seeing throughout . You know, the same thing, just about every place, were finding the Road Conditions, different, where ever you are. Now, were on a little cull de sack. So, a lot of these cull de sack areas, and neighborhoods have not been plowed. And when you see these big tall trees you wont be getting much sunlight today at all to help melt some of this. Temperatures tonight go back down below freezing. There will be a lot of refreeze, the ground is frozen solid so water doesnt runoff and go anywhere. This is stale problem though i havent seen anybody with a problem out here driving around but that can change. We will go back to you nicole. Certainly k well be on top of it, thank you full hour of coverage on this winter storm beginning at the top of the hour. Stay with us, well be back at 9 00. We have eye on the storm in the grimes of noreaster making its way up the coast. This is live look in collingswood raining on top of snow thats already fallen. And this is live look at the poconos where fresh coating of snow now awaits skiers. The poconos has seen at least half foot of snow. Some places up to 8 inches.
