They were brought here to central booking in downtown baltimore. In announcing the charges today the prosecutor repeatedly scolded the six officers for failing to do enough to save a dying man. The findings of our comprehensive, thorough, and independent investigation has led us to believe that we have probable cause to file criminal charges. yelling reporter at a News Conference today states attorney Marilyn Mosby said she filed the charges after her office ran its own investigation and received reports from the medical examiner and the Baltimore Police. The manner of death deemed a homicide by the maryland state medical examiner sbled to be the result of a fatal injury that occurred while mr. Gray was unrestrained by a cite belt in the custody of the Baltimore Police department wagon. Reporter grays report said he was arrested without force or incident and was carrying a switch knife. But mosby usa today it was not a switch blade and legal. According to mosby the ordeal began sunday morning when gray exchanged glances with police, ran and was arrested. He was taken down in this nowwidely seen video by a maneuver known as a leg lace. He said he had trouble breathing and asked for an inhaler which he did not get. He was placed in the back of a police van but not seat belted. As required under Police Department rules. At 8 46, the van stopped at baker street, and police removed gray shackled him filled out paper work, and put him back in the van. Placing him on his stomach head first on to the floor of the wagon. Once again mr. Gray was not secured by a seat belt in the wagon, contrary to a b. P. D. General order. Reporter it was then, mosby says the fatal injuries happened as gray was driven around. Following transport from baker street, mr. Gray suffered a severe and critical neck injury as a result of being handcuffed, shackled by his feet and unrestrained inside of the b. P. D. Wagon. Reporter the van made several more stops. At one point officer Caesar Goodson, according to prosecutors, checked on freddie gray. Other officers assisted him. Sergeant white, who was responsible for investigating two citizen complaints pertaining to mr. Grays illegal arrest spoke to the back of mr. Grays head. When he did not respond she did nothing further despite the fact that she was advised that he needed a medic. He made no effort to look or assess or determine his condition. Reporter gray finally arrived at the Western DistrictPolice Station after 9 00 a. M. Mr. Gray was no longer breathing at all. A medic was finally called to the scene where upon arrival the medic determined that mr. Gray was now in cardiac arrest and was critically and severely injured. Reporter gray died a week later. The most serious charges were leveled against officer goodson the driver of the van. Officer goodson in a grossly negligent manner chose to respond to the 1600 block of west north avenue with mr. Gray still unsecured by a seat belt in the wagon without rendering to or summoning medical assistance for mr. Gray. Reporter attorney Michael Davey is representing one of the officers but spoke today for all six. He says they did nothing wrong. We believe that the actions taken today by the states attorney are an egregious rush to judgment, and we have grave concerns about the fairness, and integrity of the prosecution of our officers. Reporter mosby ended her speech with a plea for peace. Last but certainly not least to the youth of this city, i will seek justice on your behalf. This is a moment. This is your moment. Lets ensure that we have peaceful and productive rallies rally that will develop structural and systemic changes for generations to come. Even if it they cha them, thats it only 10 years. There aint any amount of money that can bring slim back from the dead. Reporter i spoke with some young men in this crowd and asked what they thought would have happened if the officers had not been charged. They used words like mayhem and war in the streets. So you can imagine the relief in the neighborhood. Pelley Marilyn Mosby is the youngest top prosecutor in any major city. Shes 35, and on the job not quite four months. The eyes of the nation are on her now, and we spoke to her a short time ago. Why did you feel it was important to go public in the way that you did today . Well, i think that there should be some level of transparency in this process. We went public because it was a matter of the public concern. I mean, at the end of the day this was a thorough investigation. We did everything we could to get to the right result, and i believe that we did. Fraternal order of police, the Police Officers union says that you have rushed to judgment. And i can tell you that thats simply not the case. As i stated, from the moment of this investigation, i sent my own independent investigators to the scene to witness to interview witnesses. Weve utilizeed and leveraged the Police Departments investigation to verify the facts. The information again that was turned over to me yesterday was not new to the states attorneys office. Weve known about that information. Weve been debriefed the entire time. The only Additional Information that was brought forth was the information that i discussed this morning which would be the medical examiners report which deemed this to be a homicide. Pelley do you anticipate some prosecutions with regard to the riots . I do. We have to hold people accountable. And, you know, one of the things that i hope that the media was able to start to focus on was not just the fact thats these riots took place but why these riots took place. So many people feel voiceless. But at the same time, this lawlessness is unacceptable. And so we will hold people accountable for destroying businesses and burning homes and cars. Thats thats not the right way in which we should we should approach this. Pelley what does growing up in a Law Enforcement family mean to you and how does it inform what youre doing now . Well, what i can tell you is that, you know, i come from five generations of Police Officers. My greatgrandfather, my grandfather, my mother, my father my uncles Law Enforcement is instilled. So i recognize the commitment the sacrifice that Police Officers make day in and day out, time away from their families. Their daily sacrifice of their lives for the betterment of our communities, but recognizing that and having that instilled in me since i was a little girl. Also recognize that there are individuals who usurp their authority, and they they avoid the public trust. Its unacceptable. And those individuals individuals who usurp their authority those individuals do a disservice to the really hardworking Police Officers who risk their lives day in and day out.
