Damaging the fbis nonpartisan representation but what is less clear is the timing of his dismissal in midst of Trump Campaign staff. There was no advance notice, james comey the 56yearold fbi director was in los angeles when he reportedly learned he was fired wednesday afternoon from a tv screen as he spoke to fbi agents. President trumps letter was delivered later stating the attorney general and Deputy Attorney general had sent a memo quote recommending your dismissal. Mr. Trump said im accepting their recommendation and youre hereby terminated the. He said comey crossed the line by making inappropriate statements about the Hillary Clinton email investigation. The timing of the abrupt dismissal drew criticism from both sides of the aisle. The Administration Needs to answer the question why now. Were the investigations getting too close to home for the president. Prosecutors issued grand jury subpoenas to associates of michael flynn, the president s former National Security adviser. The president made a point of stating i am not under investigation. But some republicans and democrats called for an independent special prosecutor toal take over the investigation into whether the Russian Election tampering had any impact on the campaign. This is not a democrat or republican issue. I hope they can come together. We await clarification by the white house as soon as possible as to whether this investigation will continue and whether it will have a credible lead. John mccain tweeted removal of james comey only confirms need for independent investigation into interference in election. Its not surprising he would ask comey to leave. And if Hillary Clinton were president she would ask him to leave too. He was in the department of justice and says the dismissal will slow down the fbis investigations. This has a huge impact. It freezes in place some sense the investigation right now. The people in the fbi now are wondering whos making the decisions and there wont be a new director for a while. It takes Senate Confirmation so its not going to happen overnight. Trump says that the search is already beginning to find a new fbi director. Jenna thank you. The president responded on twitter two senator schumers comments saying crying Chuck Schumer stated i dont have confidence in comey any longer. Drain the swamp. A representative tweeted out this is not what an innocent person would do. Firing the guy investigating russian hacking without cause is a conscious of guilt. Ive said it before and will again we must have a special prosecutor to oversee the fbis russia investigation. This cannot wait. The political turmoil made for a lively town hall meeting where a democratic congressman faced a friendly audience at dominican university. Live in san rafael where the congressman also called for a special prosecutor on President Trump and russia. Reporter he hosted a few hundred people for two hours. A town hall previously scheduled but with new urgency tonight. Thats todays bombshell and well see what the days ahead bring us. The fbi upheaval took center stage in the auditorium. President trump has brought a level of demagoguery and recklessness to the white house im not sure our country has ever experienced. Making water gate look quaint he said. Other president s have set up blind trusts voluntarily. Temperature theme long planned was holding the president accountable. With three prominent attorneys weighing in. They noted its been mostly the judiciary pushing back. But because without it we really dont have a way of Holding Donald trump, his administration, or anybody accountable. What can people do is were doing it. We are becoming a much more educated population. Just by pushing back against some of the really outlandish things that are happening make Good Progress but were not resting there. In barely more than 100 days the congressman says he feels the needle moving on trump and the narrative changing. The loudest applause came when impeachment was mentioned amid misdemeanors. Violations of the law that will compel the congress to consider that. And the question i guess i have is could it ever happen with this congress . Are you looking to me . Well, i dont know. No votes for it now says the congressman. But. We might be able to change the dynamics on the investigations that would lead potentially to an impeachment. Of comey he was no fan after how he handled Hillary Clinton email probe. As much as i questioned his judgment i always felt he was at least independent. For trump to turn on comey now he finds suspicion. The fbi investigation was getting a little close to home on these russia connections. Well see what happens from here. But i think at a minimum this very political act by donald trump has slowed down that investigation. Preaching to the choir absolutely with this staunch democratic audience and they were urged to channel all of that energy into organizations and swing districts headed into the midterm elections. Live in san rafael, ktvu fox two news. Now to our continuing coverage of the sierra lamar case and the guilty verdicts that were returned in court today. A jury in the south bay found a woman guilty of murder even though the evidence was all circumstantial and the body has never been found. Family members said theyre grateful for the verdict but also acknowledged nothing will bring back the 15yearold. Jessy garret was in the courtroom today when the verdict were read. Reporter guilty of kidnapping and firstdegree murder in the death of sierra lamar. Were just grateful and blessed that the jury came up with a verdict that they did. And its going to be a safer world because of them. The murdered teens family and friends overcome with relief their fiveyear journey to justice resulted in a conviction. David boyd used a mountain of circumstantial evidence to convince a panel of seven women and five men the 25yearold kidnap and had murdered sierra lamar and that he had also attacked three other women prior to the lamar case. The same jury held him responsible on three attacks on separate women prior. She disappeared more than five years ago as she headed to a bus stop enroute to school. They found her dna on a rope found in his car which was also in the area minutes before the girl went missing and the suspects dna found on the victims clothing which had been discarded in a field. The jury just believed that he was responsible for sierra lamar s death and i think at this point they said he must have been responsible for these other attacks as well. Defense lawyers tried to raise reasonable doubt. They argued lamar was miserable with her familys move and planned to run away. With no physical remains he told jurors the teen could still be alive. But prosecutors called multiple witnesses who said the charismatic 15yearold had made a home in morgan hill with new friends. He constant social media activity went dormant the day she disappeared. Although the family doesnt know where sierras remains are they know the person responsible for her disappearance has been convicted. Theres things that help but theres not really any closure. When the verdicts were read in court there was a loud yeah screamed by some of the friends and family of sierra lamar followed by clapping and some tears. Theyll get a chance to express their emotions again during the victim impact Statement Given in the penalty phase a week from today. Next week theyll try to convince jurors he should spend the rest of his life behind bars instead of getting a death sentence. Ken wayne talked with our legal analyst who says it appears that the jury is leaning towards the Death Penalty. So they made up their mind very quickly with that in mind even though there wasnt a body because in most cases ive known about if theres a Death Penalty on the table with no body jurors are like i dont know what have we put him to death and all of a sudden she shows up we cant undo that mistake. So in this case the jury seems to be pushing that aside. He also said its possible that her family could agree to a deal to drop the Death Penalty if he will reveal the location of sierras body. Before moving to morgan hill sierra lamar lived in freemont. One of her former teachers was watching closely as the verdict came in. She remembers comforting her fellow cheerleaders when the 15yearold went missing in 2012. She said it touched many of the students even if they didnt know sierra permly. Today in class i had about eight cheerleaders and they all looked at me and said is it done. I said its done. Helen paris says shes relieved by the guilty verdict and told us she still finds solace at a bench dedicated to sierras memory. The professor says part of the Research Found that edith died of severe undernourishment. As the current homeowners there tell they often hear her. They would put their two little girls to and we had hear running feet upstairs and theyd go who is out of bed and the girls are sound asleep.
