The Rocky Springs neighborhood, eerily quiet with cars and homes submerged in water knee deep. On the citys north side, pumps are making significant progress. Flood waters there, now 4 inches deep. At its peak, it was 3 feet. When people are allowed to go back into their homeses weve developed a check list for them to make sure everything is safe for them. Reporter city officials warning homeowners of the hazards from all the standing water, as they investigate what caused the creek to overflow its banks. What we i think had the most difficulty establishing was what, and when. Ultimately, there was going to be no stopping this water. Reporter she says all they can do is make the best of it it. All you can do now is just clean up after what happened to us. Ive been trying to stay positive. Reporter a lot of people in good spirits tonight. City officials plan on assessing areas like this neighborhood. The Rocky Springs area that had been evacuated, and returning people only when it is safe to do so. In terms of injuries, no major injuries to report. Tonight, i did learn that one firefighter was injured rescuing a cat. Im curious, have you heard any reports of looting at all . Reporter i have not seen any reports of looting. A lot of them are working overtime, staffing up to help with this disaster here, but as of right now ive not heard of any looting. The city of san jose is promising a full investigation into the flood disaster. Santa clara valley water managers say theyve been releasing as much water as possible from a valve at the base of anderson dam since the beginning of january. They say that valve doesnt drain fast enough, and needs to be resigned. The only way to release water is from the spill way, and that only happens when the water reaches the top of the dam. Earlier today, ktvus allie rasmus asked the mayor. What is the cause of the flooding, is it rain water or anderson dam . Essentially, we have experts more knowledgeable than myself. Its apparent to everybody, this is not about rain, this is about anderson dam. We had evacuation areas that exceeded the 100 year flood zone. That gives you an indication that this is not a flood that we would typically anticipate. What happened is the cause of whats happening here. The Water District says there is a plan to create a second release valve closer to the spill way. That will allow managers to drain about a third of the water in that reservoir in three to five days. Most evacuees found places to stay on their own. But many are forced to stay in the emergency shelters set up at two high schools in san jose. That could eventually cost as much as 200 million to repair. Developing news from sacramento tonight, where a Highway Patrol officer was killed when his motorcycle crashed during a pursuit. The officer has been identified as 31yearold lucas shalu. He was involved in a chase shortly before 6 00 tonight in south sacramento. There are reports that his motorcycle struck a pole. So far, the chp has not confirmed details on how that crash happened. He was ejected from the motorcycle and rushed to Uc Davis Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Highway 37 in marin county is scheduled to open tomorrow morning after flooding closed a portion of the roadway three times this year. Crews have been using heavy Construction Equipment to shore up the highway, and improve the drainage system. Crews also installed a shoulder barrier along 1500 feet of the eastbound portion of the highway. The heavy rains this winter have caused repeated closures between highways 101 and atherton avenue. Officials say the highway will reopen at 5 00 tomorrow morning. A four mile stretch of the road between fremont and sanol has been shut down for several days, after mudslides blocked the road.
