They do tell me it was a latino man who appears to be from the bay area. About 1 00 in the afternoon at a busy intersection, a gunman approached his vehicle, while he was at that light. Reporter the driver was killed inside his red dodge pickup truck while made making a turn. Alameda county sheriffs deputies say the shooter used a handgun. Fired multiple rounds into the car. Reporter a citizen was driving a white s. U. V. Behind the red truck. Also waiting to turn. And saw it all. That person is a key witness in this investigation because they saw the gunman and the act go down. Reporter the gunman ran from the intersection of nick wood blossom way and turned north. Sheriffs deputies, k9 units and a drone stand out fanned out going through the neighborhood. Looking for the gunman. Shocked but you dont see this every day. A concern for Public Safety in an area with many families and an elementary school. Its a Public Safety concern to have a weapon on the loose and evidence of vital importance to us. Thats because they are planning to do a photo lineup and they said they do not want to jeopardize that process. Thats what theyre telling me. They said it didnt appear to be a carjacking. There wasnt much dialogue before the shooting. They said right now they are still trying to get information and talk to the suspect and piece together what happened. It was a good thing after the victim was shot, they said he could have rolled into the intersection and didnt. So a good thing that no one else was hurt. Sure is. Was too badly damaged its engine ended up several yards away. C. H. P. Says one person was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in walnut creek. Those westbound lanes reopened about an hour ago. A c. H. P. Motorcycle officer was hurt after he crashed on interstate 80. In solano county. The officer was heading eastbound to a pursuit. The crash happened near the American Canyon exit about one deck 30 this afternoon. He was taken by helicopter to the hospital. C. H. P. California air quality Officials Say a settlement plan with volkswagen to recall its diesel cars is insufficient. The robot veers away and stops. The child looking back at his parents and then runs into the machine and falls down. Based on what we saw, there is no report of any kind of what we call a motor fault which means something happened and we ran over something. Theres no report of any vibration on the machine. So if it had toppled or actually run over somebody, theres no report of that. Thats totally not true because it hit my sons hat. So he has bruises. Sergeant nate stiegler was one of two officers who shot and killed a homeless man named louis luis gongora in april. Police say he was holding a large knife at the time. At tonights Police Commission meeting, going over his relatives expressed concern that stiegler was now on the policing standards bureau. Acting chief Toney Chaplin told them the sergeant has now voluntarily transferred out of that bureau. The first wave of san jose Police Officers to wear body cameras is out on patrol. Ktvus south bay reporter jesse gary was therefore todays training and found out there are still questions about how the videos will be used and who will get to see them. But the priority is always officer and Public Safety. There are times when there has to be some measure or allowance for discretion in order for officers to be able to do their job without inserting a bright line rule. Reporter there have been four officerinvolved shootings in san jose. The most recent, just last week in the east foothills. Family members told Police Anthony nunez was depressed and suicidal. A tense standoff ended when nunez pointed the weapon at police. Two officers opened fire, killing him. Watchdog groups essay using the cameras is a step in the right direction toward full transparency. I think its a thing. I commend the department for bringing forward this idea. I think its something that can help kind of clarify and help us learn, really what happens when theres an interaction between the police and the person on the street. Friends and relatives morning dallas transit officer brent thompson. He was a marine, a grandfather and a newlywed. His children say they will forever remember their father as a hero. You knew our dad as a Police Officer. But we knew him as our dad. His only goal in life was to provide a better life for his children and us. Whether it was becoming a marine, or going overseas, reporter hundreds of mourners attended a private Funeral Service for Sergeant Michael smith a former u. S. Army ranger. And the laughter would come out. Earlier tonight frank spoke with the 14yearold daughter of a san jose officer who fears for his safety. Joining me now is sandy and her 14yearold daughter julianne. Your dad is a Police Officer with san jose Police Department. The day after the dallas shooting, you wrote a letter that you sent to me that i really wanted to share, because i thought it was such a powerful letter where you talked about how scared you were for your dads safety. And we could start out with you reading some of that letter. The people saying we should shoot cops for revenge scare me. After two officers were murdered in new york, i winced every time i heard a car door slammed. Every time i heard a knock on the door i was afraid someone was coming to me that my dad was not coming home. Im of the people to before they comment. Time to take one of them with us or sent out some comedy because on the other side of that keyboard is someone reading this, its. Someone like me who doesnt want her dead go to work, scared that he may not come home. Just wants people to realize how much officers sacrifice their safety. At the end of the day officers want to get home safe like everyone else. Reporter thats a really powerful letter. Is this something that you worry about every day . Your dads safety . But every day. It gets worse when theres a shooting like in dallas. It gets a little more scared, but pretty much every day. Reporter how do you deal with that . But we talk about it a lot. Safety procedures to help him remain safe and its communication, helps a lot. Reporter when you see your daughter write a letter like that, what do you think . But you try and protect your kids from those kind of things. But shes a smart kid and knows whats going on in the world. So we just it scares me that she has to deal with it. So we just try and be honest with her and keep lines of communication open. Reporter the day after dallas, you had a conversation around the kitchen table. What did you talk about . But she asked questions about the shooting and my husband talked about his safety procedures because that was her big concern that Something Like that could happen in san jose. So he talked to her about what he does and how their department is keeping them safe. Reporter what would you like people to know about your dad . But hes a great guy. He never goes out wanting to hurt someone. He loves this city and he wants to protect everyone. Wants to be an officer for longer than he can remember. And he wants to keep everyone safe. Reporter are you proud . Incredibly proud. Reporter how do you deal with the fear . I imagine you have the same type of fear that she does. How do you deal with it . Do you talk with other wives officers . What do you do . Spot i dont really talk about it outside our family. Its not something a lot of people really understand. So we just try and talk amongst ourselves and make sure that we are reassured that whats going on in the city, hes being safe. Reporter why did you want to right a letter . Its been a long scary road for the little boy from livermore. Diagnosed when he was just 21 month old. The community has rallied behind keegan and his family throughout his cancer fight. But what happened earlier this month left the family speechless. A 12yearold boy came up with the idea to raise a pig and auction it off at the Alameda County fair. With the proceeds going to help the family with mounting medical bills. The 270pound pig was named courage and when the donated animal hit the auction block, the bidding sword. 50 a pound, 100, 200, before topping out at 400 a pound. [ cheering ] the crowd was on its feet cheering, clapping and surprised. The owners of american truck and trailer paid 108,000 for courage. The auctioneer then asked those in the crowd for donations in any amount an additional 50,000 poured in. For a family, this generous gesture gave them hope.
