About a half dozen officers were gathered outside the emergency department. Reporter police say the officer loved his job, loved his family and the chief says that one witness at the scene stopped to help him. A witness stopped and provided firstaid to officer katherman and actually used offer officer kathermans police radio to call for help. Officers and paramedics quickly arrived on scene and continued the lifesaving effort. Officer katherman was transported to Regional Medical center where he was unfortunately pronounced deceased. Reporter police at the scene had to divert traffic for more than five hours. That called for backups for blocks during the evening rush hour. The scene still is closed. They plan to have it closed to traffic at least for the time being while they continue their investigation. Back here live, we did ask him about the driver of the minivan. Apparently that man is cooperating with police. He is not in custody. They say at this point it does not appear that any drugs or alcohol were involved but they are interviewing him now to try and get more details about exactly what happened over there on north 10th street this evening. But it was definitely a difficult moment for the chief, for the other officers who came out here. He said he wanted to address them at their evening meeting tonight before coming out to the public and sharing this news. We did see that they had the black bands on their badges, a difficult time to lose one of their own and in such a sudden way. You can definitely hear the emotion in the chiefs voice. Remarkable that that witness was able to stop and actually use the police radio to try to get help for that following officer. Reporter absolutely, julie. And they really said that they appreciated that. They appreciated the community.
