The folks behind me. These are the faces of tenants fighting back reporter these residents, all of them low income, are facing possible eviction and are fighting to stay. I mean, not only being squeezed out of the building, i feel like im being squeezed out of San Francisco. Were going to show you the results starting with the biggest prize, that was michigan. An upset, Bernie Sanders has defeated Hillary Clinton 50 to 48 . The candidates will now split the delegates since michigan awards them proportionally. On the republican side, donald trump is the big winner in michigan. You can see here, 24 37 for trump, 24. 9 for cruz and 24. 3 for john kasich. Marco rubio ended up far behind. Mississippi, another victory for donald trump, he is the winner there with 47 . Cruz second, john kasich third, once again, marco rubio trails the pack. Democratic side, clinton wins big in mississippi. So far, she has shown the most strength in the south. Of course that continued today, 83 for Hillary Clinton, 16 for Bernie Sanders. Republican primary in idaho, here we have ted cruz winning by a doubledigit margin with donald trump coming in second, marco rubio third, john kasich was fourth. Democrats did not vote today in idaho. Also a caucus happening in hawaii tonight. It was set to end at 10 00 our time. Analysts say hawaii is always unpredictable. So its unclear at this point if tonights results have led to a shift in momentum in the race. But one thing we do know, donald trump did reach out to the establishment tonight. Jana katsuyama is in our newsroom now with the reaction from the candidates. Reporter frank, this keeps getting more and more interesting. Tonight was a big win for Bernie Sanders. A disappointment for Hillary Clinton who was expected to win michigan. On the republican side, trump, cruz and kasich all got a boost to position themselves for next tuesdays bigger primaries. Senator Bernie Sanders populace message lit up the crowd at a campaign rally. Just as the polls in michigan and assist to be were closing monday night. In america, if you work 40 hours a week, there should not you should not be living in poverty. End of discussion. Reporter his message resonates with Michigan Democrats who turned out for him in unexpectedly high numbers. A surprising victory even for sanders who issued a latenight statement. Frankly, we believe that our strongest areas are yet to happen. Were going to do very well on the west coast and other parts of this country. Reporter Hillary Clintons commanding win in mississippi shows her dominance in the south. But the loss points to a vulnerability. At a rally in cleveland, her speech took on a tone similar to sanders. I want to be the president for the struggling and the striving. For people who have a dream and who are looking for a way to achieve that dream. Reporter the republican race, donald trump is starting to put distance between himself and the other candidates. I want to thank the people of michigan, the people of mississippi. Reporter trump offered an olive branch and a message to the rest of the party. The bottom line is we have something going thats so good. We should grab each other and we should unify the party. Nobodys going to beat us. Okay . Reporter john kasich betting he can beat trump in ohio say thanked his supporters in michigan for a strong showing. Now the Home Court Advantage is coming north. Next week, were going to win the state of ohio. Reporter senator ted cruzs victory was predicted. It came in late, he was on a plane and did not hold a conference. Marco rubios campaign basically downplayed todays contest, clearly there is even more pressure on rubio to win florida next tuesday. And ohio, illinois, missouri and North Carolina are some of the other big states on the line. Thank you. Now to analysis of two nights wins, Bernie Sanders, big upset. James taylor, professor of political science, professor, Bernie Sanders was down an average of 21 points in michigan according to an average of all the polls. Yet he ended up winning by 2. What happened . Bernie sanders was able to persuade and discourage people from accepting hillarys important argument about her role in the auto bailout and how the way it was portrayed did not support the bailout even though he ultimately did. His message resonates in general with the struggles of ordinary people, workingclass people going through in the midwest. The rust belt in particular. So Bernie Sanders is right. His best days are ahead of him. Doesnt mean he can win the nomination but he certainly will have more success and more victories Going Forward. The question is, will it be enough to stop hillary Going Forward . That is a great point. Some people are calling this a moral victory for Bernie Sanders because they ended up splitting the delegates anyway. Is this a wakeup call for Hillary Clinton . Maybe a glimpse into the picture if she wins the nomination, what will be like in the general election . Thats a great question. It does signal whats to come from the opposition, looking into what bernie did well in michigan, to upset Hillary Clinton. This is a political upset even though as frank said, the delegates are distributed relatively proportionately. So really, bernie isnt making a big deal out of victory because he understands the math but he has a lot to be optimistic about. There are more than 30 states in play. Several hundred thousands actually of delegates still available. He has plenty of money and he has affected the psychology of this race even if he cant affect the math. He has affected the psychology and hillary after her stint 2008 experience cant afford to not to be as clear and focused on this entire race to the end. Lets go to the republican side, good night once again for donald trump, not a very good night for marco rubio. Yeah. Marco rubio has to decide within the next 48 hours whether hes going to continue on. As you saw, over the last day trying to decide whether or not he has any way of getting in now or if he has to prepare for his political future. He has to think about 2020. Thats what marco rubio needs to be thinking about, 2020 election. 2016 is gone for him. John kasich has a right to be optimistic. He did well in michigan. And had 24 of his support, the highest hes gotten in this entire race. So he should win ohio, his home state and do well in big ten conference states. So Hillary Clinton on her side will continue to be the lead, bernie will continue to show well. Trump will continue to be the leader in the republican column but i dont think to the end of becoming the nominee. I think kasich is doing well, kasich is poised, i think, to give many people in the alternative to donald trump that cruz himself is an unacceptable alternative for most of the voters. We will have to see, more voting yet to come. Professor james taylor, thank you so much for your time. Watching the weather out there, more rain coming, significant rainfall, severe thunderstorms across houston and dallas today, all that inclement weather moves off to the ohio and Mississippi Valleys tomorrow, travel plans into this area, ohio and Mississippi Valley tomorrow, flight delays and its going to be dicey with severe weather.
