Ktvus Ken Pritchett is in the east bay where people felt the heat but we began with meteorologist mark tamayo on the triple digits just two days after the rain, mark. Its been an active weather week. We had the heat advisory on monday, now temperatures soaring throughout the bay area. Take a look at ocean beach, this was the case this afternoon. 61degrees for an afternoon high. Now toward walnut creek temperatures topping 100. In fact, 101 degrees at about 3 00 this afternoon. Some more very hot temperatures out toward gilroy. 103. Walnut creek 101. We talked about that. So heres a look at the map covering the entire bay area and a lot of temperatures to choose from here 64 in pacifica. San francisco 71. Not that extreme heat right around the bay but you can pick out the hot temperatures inland in the upper 90s to right around 100. Right now you can see patchy fog regrouping offshore. Were going to shave off a few degrees for parts of the bay area the saturday forecast. More on that coming up in about 15 minutes. All right, mark well see you then. Thank you. Reporter frank, it is certainly cooling off now here in pleasanton. Earlier today it was unbarely hot. That didnt stop people from coming out tonight for a concert where they ended in the shade. Reporter with the sound of r b tonights concert in the park was hot. As you can see it is very family oriented. It is wonderful. Reporter the heat made for a profitable evening for the shaved ice cart. By some readings, pleasanton hit triple digits. Plenty hot for robe clad graduates. Sandoval came here to see her granddaughter walk. Im very proud of her. Very proud of her. Reporter tish also came prepared with a large umbrella. Thousands were deployed throughout the grand stand to keep the sun off of their back and tish knew just where to sit. In the back row, i wanted the back row so i could prop that umbrella up. Reporter water was in high demand. These juniors were selling to pay for a trip. Were out of water. We keep coming back with a lot of water and people have just been using it all. Reporter with scorching heat comes more serious matters. Wildfires. In Sonoma County this wildfire broke out. On what was the hottest day of the year. Only brush burns structures were near by but quickly protected. The timing worked out this time. The humidities were still higher than earlier in the afternoon. The fire behavior wasnt extreme at this point. Its really lucky this occurred earlier in the day. Reporter were just getting into the fire season but its already been busy. Weve had 200 more fires than we did last year. We can expect to see more when these hot days return. Its going to be a long summer. Ken, thanks so much. The demonstration began early this evening as thousands of people gathered near lake merit. About one dozen of them sat down in the intersection of lake shore and lake park avenues blocking traffic. Tonights vigil was led by members of the antipolice terror project and they questioned the Police Accounts of what happened to domarie hawk. Were here to provide a space for the community. Because when a life is stolen out of our Community Whether or not we knew the victim, is traumatic for us. Reporter police say they found hog armed and unresponsive while parked on the lake shore avenue exit of highway 580. Officers say they tried to wake him for about an hour even using a loud speaker. When he finally awoke there was a demonstration and that led to shots being fired and his death. New information about a Home Invasion robbery in san jose. We learned today it was an inside job. As ktvus Azenith Smith reports, prosecutors blamed the teenage son who allegedly got help from unknown gang members. It was a terrifying Home Invasion. The video blasted on social media and on the news of two teens armed with knives in broad daylight. Two women and a 14 monthold baby was home at the time in hiding. Prosecutors say it was not a random act. But all master minded by the victims 17yearold son singh who does not live there. Sources have provided information that leadstous believe that he was the one that set this up. He initiated the contact and provided information to help the gang members he knows from high school commit this crime. Singh along with herr era and torrez are all accused of robbing singhs fathers house. Back on may 8 all of them except singh drove to the home. Two went inside with kitchen knives, cut phone lines and ransacked the house. Two women are close Family Friends and his babys half sister is upstairs. A man chased a woman as she desperately tried to hold a door closed. The men and women then hid in the bathroom before the men took off. The sad thing is hes turning on his family. Reporter singhs father did not speak to media. But said he wanted whoever did this behind bars. Theyre very dangerous. Theyre armed, theyre dangerous. Reporter singh had strong ties to the community and no prior history, his attorney wanted his charge reduced. Singh was here back in court on july 16 with the rest of the suspects. If convicted he could face up to 20 years in jail. Azenith smith, ktvu news. We have developing news from Great America in santa clara where two people were injured this evening and taken to the hospital. Authorities tell us an employee suffered whats described as a traumatic injury but was alert and talking with taken to the hospital. The other injury involved a guest who suffered a hand injury. Reports from the scene indicate that the accident happened on the popular flight deck roller coaster ride. Great americas website says it can go up to 50 miles per hour. Great america is not releasing any information on how that injury happened. The nba finals all tied up. And today fans greeted the warriors as they arrived back in oakland. They staked out Oakland International airport. We were there as the team packed up their cars and drove off. The nba finals have been a real thrill for warrior fans. In particular its bringing a lot of young kids to basketball courts and basketball camps. And Jana Katsuyama is here to tell us how the sport is impacting the kids. She sees all these wonderful ladies playing. We watch a lot of football and its just men she sees. A display of women on the world stage and a message from women. Fall in love with something. Conference of mayors at the hilton hotel. They are also in San Francisco. The president is then scheduled to leave town on saturday. New developments involving that prison break in new york. Today a prison worker named Joyce Mitchell was arraigned a couple of hours after being arrested earlier today. She is charged with one felony and one misdemeanor for helping two convicted murderers break out of prison. Her attorney entered a not guilty plea on her behalf. Mitchell is 51 years old. Shes being held on 121,000 bail. Shes due back in court next month. The two inmates are still on the lose. And molly line reports now on the relationship that mitchell had with the two of them and what authorities are saying about her. This is one large piece of the puzzle in our quest to find these two escaped murderers. Reporter search day seven. Authorities reveal new details about the woman at the center of the investigation as the escaped killers remain at large. Fox news has confirmed. Joyce mitchell was supposed to drive the get away car but never showed. A source close to the investigation says she had a change of heart at the last minute. Mitchell initially shared little but every day theyre learning more about her association with matt and sweat. Mitchell has not provided power tools. She has not provided any type of power tools to sweat or matt. Reporter mitchell was previously investigated for a relationship with sweat. Action was taken to separate the two. And now confirmation her husband is being eyed too. He is obviously a person of interest because of the obvious relationship with Joyce Mitchell. And works in the correctional facility. Reporter mitchell was charged for two crimes. And the reason why we have the fog. We couldnt get rid of the fog. It has been regrouping over the past few hours. Out toward ocean beach the Golden Gate Bridge and approaching the bay bridge as well. Still pretty mild as you can see in walnut creek. These areas in the 70s. San jose checking in 69. In San Francisco last check 63. Santa rosa 57 degrees. Heres our live camera looking out toward the bay bridge. Not much in the way of not much in the way of significant fog just yet. But i saw this picture maybe about 10 minutes ago we had patches pushing back into this region. This will be factor some what over the next few hours and into saturday morning. Speaking of saturday morning overnight lows will be in the mid50s to lower 60s. Partly crowd cloudy skies. Still partly foggy. Heres the plan first thing tomorrow morning, if fog bank clears out. Temperatures will be on the hot site but hot side but tomorrow will be cooler than today. It really begins to widen by the afternoon hours. By 4 00, 65 for the beaches, warmest locations the hottest locations inland. Back up into the low to upper 90s. More cooling coming up in the sunday forecast. Well have more on that coming up at 10 45. Thank you, mark. A strange site is turning up on east bay beaches. Giant purple sea slugs like the one you see here have been spotted on several shorelines. Someone at the beach snapped these pictures of the slimy plant eaters. Sea slugs can weigh up to 30 pounds and grow up to 8inches long. Scientists say the sea slugs are native to the area and are likely washing ashore because of the unusually warm water temperatures along the coast. A special graduation for a young bay area man who says that he owes it all to someone who he actually has never met. If it wasnt for him i wouldnt be walking the stage. His mission now to pay it forward. And a construction project just weeks away. What were learning about the doyle drive closure. Reporter mickey is graduating from a high school in oakland with the help of Johnny Hernandez an 18yearold who died before receiving his own diploma. Well put johnny on top of him so he can go to the graduation too. Reporter hernandez was killed in a car accident while on his way to adult night school. Mickey was the recipient of an organ donor. Mickey and johnny are walking the stage today. Reporter this ktvu video from when he started mickey meals, an effort to feed the needy. They basically signed up to help me for mickeys meal and they received a graduation. So they helped me out and i help them out too. I am glad he decided to pay it forward. It was something that became contagious with my family first and then everybody just kind of caught on. Reporter mickey plans to player on social work when he attends cal state. But right now hes enjoying the moment and part of the centennial class. Hes not thinking about the 14 times hes been in and out of the hospital since the transplant. The missed days from school, the recovery. Michael caraway. Reporter hes thinking about his accomplishment. Im just excited because we finally made it. Ive been with these other students for four years so im just very happy. Reporter the circumstances and the odds were against him because of the transplant. But he made it an he was able to graduate with his class. Reporter mickey plans to continue his nonprofit work for the homeless in college. Because he knows that sometime in life, people always need a little help. That is so impressive what he has done. My hat is off to mickey there. A very special day and a very special man. Yeah. A teenagers legacy honored. Her lifes work was so big. How the parents of a girl who was killed in a car crash are turning their tragedy into an opportunity for others. The board is cutting water allotments to some of the most senior water users. Farmers have had access since 1903. For the most part senior water rights holders are irrigation, farming. Theres going to be some smaller communities that that might be their main source of water or one of their sources of water. On the list is the east contra costa Water District that supplies water to the diablo valley, and antioch, oakley. At this moment the hetchhechy Water District is not included but it could be in the future. The Obama Administration says it will help western states suffering with the drought and most of that money will go to california. The money adds up to 18 million. On hot days like today, cranking up the air conditioner is what most people do. Reporter about mid afternoon, pg e activated its concord operation centers. Last month unexpected late day heating caused unexpected failures resulted in a slower than optimum response. Temperature modeling projected that high heat in the east bay would likely cause Power Outages. We have experts from various fields gather here. Were going to be staffing this through the night and into tomorrow. So should there be outages related to the heat were prepared and were as responsive as possible. Reporter heres the big power picture. Right now its pretty good. Heres the situation with the state power grid. This is the amount of power during the day that is projected to be used. This is the amount of power thats actually available. Way more than the amount needed to be used. So enough power is not the problem. What this cannot predict in any way shape or form is whether or not a transformer or Something Else will fail causing an outage. We have crews that are going to be remaining here onsite much later than their normal hours so that during the peak hours should there be any kind of heat related outages theyre ready to roll. Reporter if outages are minimal, normal on duty crews can handle their work and the stand by crews will be sent home midevening. But if we see a repeat of last months outages the responses will be much better. Since crews will not have to be called in from home, collect their vehicles and equipment then proceed to the site of the outages. Tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. A cable car operator is in Critical Condition after being hit by a motorcycle in San Franciscos north beach neighborhood. Investigators say the 50year old operator was getting off a cable car at the corner of taylor and francisco streets at 10 30 last night when the motorcyclist hit him from behind. The man suffered a fractured skull. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with life threatening injuries. The motorcyclist is identified as 22yearold William Makepeace of San Francisco. He was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of felony driving under the influence. We have another heads up for b. A. R. T. Riders this weekend. B. A. R. T. Plans to shut down service between the fruitvale and coliseum stadium in oakland all day tomorrow. Ac transit will provide a bus bridge. The closure is part of b. A. R. T. s ongoing repair work. A switch that allows trains from one track to another is in bad shape. They also say the wooden ties are worn. Service will resume in time for game five of the nba finals on sunday night at oracle arena. A closure day is now set. The roadway is going to be closed from thursday july 9 at 10 00 p. M. Then reopened monday july 13th at 5 00 a. M. This closure is to finalize years of work and transfer to the permanent roadway. Expect delays, drivers are encouraged to use the Richmond San Rafael bridge and the bay bridge instead or take a bus or ferry to the city. San francisco is showing off a major make over. We got a tour this morning of the newly renovated northern half of dolores park. As john sasaki reports the changes have been in the works for years. Dolores park is considered one of San Franciscos crown jewels. The over all lay out of the park has been very success. We didnt really want to change the lay out too much. Reporter as many as 10,000 people show up. We refer to dolores as a festival every week ended. Reporter but the park was not built to accommodate for so many people. The restrooms were here for staff. They were never meant for the public. Reporter in the south side of the park the city is trying out an open air urinal to cut down on public urination. The first one in the city. Its an idea we borrowed from the paritians which is a screen with an open drain thats going to be up at the corner of 20th and church. Reporter the city has added a large new concrete walk way. One of the issues with dolores park that it is so popular that if an area of the lawn is damaged we dont have the time in our schedule to close it off and let it heal because the next day the park is popular again. Reporter another problem the tons of trash left in the park. Somehow dolores park has come to feel like one of those places where its socially acceptable to leave your stuff. Reporter the citys Recreation Department are making sure trash and recycling bins are big enough and theyre changing schedules to make sure crews are stopping by enough. There is still more work that needs to be done. The approach to the cantelever section still has to be taken down. If crews stay on schedule they expect to have that demolition finished by next year. Plus questions about race surrounding the president of an naacp chapter after her family says shes lied about being black for years. The parents of an naacp chapter president have outed their daughter saying shes lied about being black for years. When a reporter asked her about her background she had a strange reaction. Are you African American . I dont, i dont understand the question. The 37yearold is the president of the naacp chapter in spokane washington. Yesterday her estranged mother said that her daughter has been deceiving people for years. And they want people to know the truth. They say she has started claiming she was half black and had biracial parents about 10 years ago. The bill would have given the president the ability to fast track a trade deal with nations. The president visited capitol hill to lobby for it. The democrat and some republicans voted to slow the package by first rejecting a second measure to help displaced workers. We do see this type of stuff on a daily basis. Reporter her father, a firefighter who knows that life is precious. Were carrying on natalias legacy by doing the things she loved. Her life was so big. Just fun, outgoing and bubbly and i miss that. Natalias yearbook just arrived. An honor student who last year would have been a class officer and mentor. A special memorial has been apted, a hard worker, giver. She volunteered in a gift drive just after knee surgery. While she was standing there in crutches, she was standing there giving toys to kids because she loved it. Reporter the girl driving another in the backseat walked away but natalia was crashed in the front seat. Impairment not an issue but the teenage drivers speed and exexperience may have been. The way teenagers think theyre uninvincible. And as parents we think that happens to other children, they dont happen to us. Reporter now the family gives out these bracelets that say, caution. Right now the coast is take a look at some of the current temperatures across the state. Right now just before 11 00 it is 94 degrees in redding at this hour. 94. They topped out at 109 degrees this afternoon. Sacramento in the upper 70s and bakers field in the upper 80s. Heres a closer look at the upper bay area. Heres the fog bank regroups and already pushing back into the bay. Current temperatures are in the 60s out there. In fact, we have some 70s to report as well. Lets go ahead and back out the maps and well show you what some of those 70s out toward walnut creek. Concord, livermore right now 74. And san jose checking in in the upper 60s at 69 degrees. Heres our live camera in San Francisco looking out over the bay. Already some patchy fog pushing back into the region and in San Francisco for tomorrow. For the north beach festival we will have this. Temperatures 10 00 in the upper 50s. Skies becoming partly sunny those readings in the upper 60s. Livermore a completely different story of course. Already warm at 7 00 a. M. Those temperatures on track to reach the lower 90s by about 5 00. By 3 00 that 93 should be nudged up. A little closer to 96, 97 degrees. A little closer to the bay, but cooler for the second half of the weekends as we lower that on shore breeze. Clear lake 98 degrees. Fairfield the stronger on shore breeze should cool you off there in the lower 90s, 92. Vacaville 95. More neighborhoods for you right around the rim of the bay in the 70s and head inland still. The hot temperatures out toward livermore, brentwood and antioch in the upper 90s there. Santa cruz 70 and San Francisco patchy dense fog in the morning clearing back to near the shoreline. And the beaches only in the low to upper 60s. Heres a look ahead. Not a dramatic cool down but we will shave off a few degrees on sunday and into monday. We were expecting a big warm up by wednesday with the latest forecast models backing up. And the chances will be warmer by wednesday. Imagine trying to go to bed in 90degree heat right now. Its happening in redding. Thats hard. What a spread too along the coast and inland. Scott is here now for mark and giants are coming home. Yeah, which you would think would be a good thing.
