It is required to set a new rate by march 1st of every year to maintain a balance between the excised tax on gas and the state sales tax. Police are looking for the man who shot a maintenance man. Sheriff deputies reported hearing multiple shots fired. At last report the victim was hospitalized in critical condition. Its the base of this tower that extends 200 feet deep into the soft bay mud. The original plan was to jackhammer the material down to the mud line and remove it by crane. Now that takes a long long time. And if you build a dam, i need to drive very, very large piles into the bay. Well that actually does, that has an additional environmental impact. Reporter instead the plan now is to hold several charges within a few minutes time. They would be placed into the hollow underground tube that holds the structure. Thats a solution that could save 100 million without harming marine life. This method was probably, probably the best way to go. Most economical, fastest and best for the environment. Cost really seems to be driving this initiative. Reporter environmental groups that plan to review the proposal are skeptical worried that baring the debris would not solve the problem. This could get distributed throughout the region possibly creating a small toxic hot spot. Reporter if approved by state and local agencies, caltrans hopes to blow up pier e3 in november and possibly use the same process to remove other piers on the old bay bridge as well.
