good evening. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. we're on early today because of our coverage of the chinese new year parade. they come from far and wide to see the largest chinese new year's parade outside asia. anticipation is building for the year of the dragon. jade. >> reporter: the parade is expected to start officially at 5:15. you can see people have already lined the sidewalks. this is at second and mark. this is where the parade is expected to start. look at all the smiling faces. it's a beautiful day out here. if any of you remember last year there were some sprinkles and rain but everyone is enjoying the wonderful weather here. this parade kicks off the new lunar year. >> is it important for you guys to see the china town parade? >> yes. >> and why? >> because we like -- because it's the year of the dragon. >> reporter: now, we watched as audrey and her sons took pictures near one of the dragons making its debut. we spoke to the group in charge of this dragon. more than 80 kids, many of them immigrants, volunteered to walk the dragon along the parade route. in addition, those carrying the dragon must manage more than 20 pounds of weight. >> we've practiced since december, every saturday. we were practicing at treasure island, and for the past two weekends we have been performing at city hall at other chinese new year locations. >> reporter: to prepare for this event police shut down second and market a few hours ago. the intersection marks the beginning of the parade. i want to bring you back out live because we have to show you all of the people here, and we also to have show you what's going on. there's a big float behind us. you can see right here, this one and a half mile parade route heads west on garyy, east on post, then north on kearny street and the finale in china town. visitors can expect 100 floats and 5,000 participants. if you watch the parade out here or on tv keep an eye out for a group consisting of 28 members known for aerobatics, performing at the beginning. we're live at second and market. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> looks like a lot of fun. this year's parade will also feature some dry weather. meteorologist mark has the forecast. >> whenever you have a parade in the bay area in the month of february it's a tall order to ensure a dry weather forecast but we lucked out this year. as you see on storm tracker 2, not a lot of coverage in the bay area. the bulk of activity to our north and east. right now we do have scattered clouds, and they will continue to push back into the region. here's a live look outside. in fact, over union square, part of the parade route. it is chilly in the lower 50s, rate around 52 degrees. bum up if you are heading to the parade. a few clouds out there. we're getting a better perspective here. so those clouds, with all that moisture in place, we cannot rule out the chance of a few spotty sprinkles, but not a washout. here's a look at the satellite and radar. we have the clouds, even a few light showers. earlier this morning a bit of a break setting up out here in the pacific so the forecast for the parade is this, in fact. here's a look at the parade route as jade just showed you beginning at second and market. the plan, at least over the next few hours is this, with your forecast, partly cloudy skies, temperatures right around 50 degrees. upper 40s to lower 50s for the chinese new year parade, just the slight chance of taking up a few sprinkles but good news, no significant rainfall. i am tracking another system developing in the pacific. timing on that coming up. more details now ton chinese new year parade in san francisco. it's the largest celebration of its kind outside of asia. it started back in the 1860's by the chinese community in san francisco. organizers wanted to use the parade as a way to educate westerners about their culture. today more than 10 floats take part. it was named one of the top ten parades in the world by international festivals and events association. the chinese new year parade draws hundreds of thousands of people to san frances he co each year. coming up, how today's event affects local businesses and why the timing couldn't be better. if you can't make it out watch it right here. >> that's right, we will begin broadcasting the parade live right after this newscast. all the fun starts at 6:00. our own julie haener will be hosting. singer whitney houston has died at the age of 48. the star was, of course, one of the world's best selling artists in the 1980s and '90s. her hits included i will always love you and how i will know. she had publicly struggled with drug use in recent years and had gone through rehab. the cause of her death as to where she died, neither is yet known. we will have much more for you on the death of whitney houston coming up for you tonight on the 10:00 news. pleasant hill police are working to track down the person responsible for a deadly drive-by shooting. ktvu went to the neighborhood and talked to residents about this rare violent crime. >> reporter: a quiet suburban neighborhood in pleasant hills looks peaceful enough, but last night it was anything but. police swarmed the area after a drive-by shooting took the life of a 21-year-old man. this neighbor didn't want to be identified. >> we're trying to put the light fixtures in, and then next thing you know, boom, boom, boom. >> reporter: multiple gunshots fired at jones and the friend who lives at the home from a saturn vehicle. >> hopefully it doesn't happen again. >> reporter: this person lives across the street and several times had met the young man who was killed. >> good kid. he's got a good head on his shoulder. >> he's a male, 21 years old. he does not live in pleasant hill. >> reporter: police say they do believe this attack was not random. >> preliminary investigation points to the fact that the victim knew the suspect, so it's not a random type thing. >> reporter: regardless, the shooting has left residents, including the man who wans to remain anonymous, unsettled. >> we just actually moved in last night, and it was quite shocking to know such an incident happened right practically 30 feet from our house. >> hopefully the police can apprehend the shooters, and hopefully they don't come back. >> a sentiment certainly shared by the entire neighborhood. in pleasant hill, ktvu channel 2 news. in oakland police are investigating a shooting that happened just before 6:00 this morning at 35th and allendale avenue. police say when they arrived they found a man and a woman inside a parked car. both with gunshot wounds. the woman died at the scene. the male victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition. so far no arrests have been made and no word on a motive. this is oakland's 15th homicide of the year. >> two people were hurt after a four-vehicle pile-up in redwood city this morning. it happened about 7:30. the accident initially blocked all northbound lanes of 101 near whipple road. the driver of a pickup truck lost control while entering the freeway. a big rig hit the pickup, then overturned. two other vehicles then ran into the big rig. the two people hurt suffered minor injuries. we have just learned the name of an elderly woman struck by a car in the city's second traffic-related death within the last 12 hours. the coroner's office says the victim is 77-year-old kim tranh. she was hit by a honda civic at about 6:45 this morning. the driver stopped at the scene and is cooperating with police. police say there is no indication the driver was intoxicated. last night just after 8:30 p.m. another woman was struck and killed by a car in san jose. police say she was jaywalking across meridian avenue at west san carlos when she was struck by an acura. police say that driver also stopped and is cooperating. the victim's name in this i want has not been released. >> authorities said today preliminary tests show remains found this week in calaveras county are that of a woman who disappeared in 1998. dental records show the skull belongs to this woman, 25-year- old cyndi vanderheiden. authorities were led to that spot by the killer, wesley shermantine. investigators believe a second set of remains found in the same location belong to 16-year- old shevell wheeler. a search for armed robbery suspects continues in vallejo after a standoff led to a house fire. ktvu talked to neighbors. >> reporter: this man returned to the home he owns on castlewood drive after a police standoff and fire. he says his tenants are devastated. >> they lost everything. >> reporter: it started around 2:00 yesterday. police were looking for six armed suspects wanted for robbing and beating a man who had responded to a bogus craigslist ad. officers reported seeing one of the suspects walk into this home and police responded. there was then a standoff. the man insists his tenants have no connection. >> they were not home. they're working people. >> reporter: did they say they knew who these people were? >> no. >> reporter: what did they say? >> they said they don't know anything. >> reporter: today there are many unanswered questions. what happened to the six suspects police were looking for, who are still on the loose, why did they come to this home, and were they ever actually inside the house in the first place. >> we don't understand what's going on. we don't, because this is unusual here. it's very unusual. >> reporter: police say the fire was not caused by their tear gas cannisters. this next-door neighbor wants answers. >> something started that fire. there was no one that in house. come on, man, it's crazy. >> reporter: a police lieutenant told me this morning fire investigators will determine how the fire began. so far no arrests have been made, and the lieutenant says police won't have any more updates until monday. a deadly surgery in violence in syria strikes a high-ranking member of the syrian army. the reported assassination of a brigadier general in the capital of damascus comes as violence spreads to more syrian cities. suicide bombers struck security compounds in syria's largest city killing at least 28 people. the attacks are the latest in the armed uprising against syria's president. later on in this newscast we will hear how arab nations are hoping to end the violence in syria and the major roadblock facing those efforts. that story in 15 minutes. occupy cal protesters are standing their ground at their new encampment back on the campus. seven tents are still up at u.c. berkeley's sprowl plaza. thursday was the three-month anniversary. occupiers are calling to an end to tuition hiation at the university. they tell us they're getting good feedback. >> people were happy to see us back, and that makes it worth it, in my mind. aim glad that people are excited for us to return. >> campus police say they have repeatedly asked demonstrators to clear out their camp because it is illegal to set up tents on campus. so far officers have not taken any action. occupy protesters in san francisco stopped traffic last night during a march through union square. dozens of demonstrators blocked the intersection of geary and powell streets before being cleared out by police. the group also went into the westfield mall on market street. police say there were some confrontations between officers and protesters but no one was seriously hurt. at least one person was arrested, accused of vandalize ago police car. we'll tell you why businesses say that the big crowds in town for the chinese new year parade couldn't have come at a better time. the gop race is heating up. the results of the maine caucuses have just come in, and it was close. a very special dog here with a long story goes up for adoption today. we'll tell you about him coming up. lunar new year celebrations bring in thousands of tourists and businesses welcome the tradition. we're live in china town. >> reporter: a lot of excitement out here. we can tell you a lot of businesses around chinatown really look forward to this. everyone from local restaurants to big chain hotels say it's a shot in the arm during what's usually a slow tourist season. the sights and sounds of new year's festivities fill the air around chinatown. chinatown restaurant is looking to fill the bellies of all the tourists. anna wong says the flood of customers couldn't come at a better time of year. >> january, february, slow season, and it's pretty good. >> reporter: the influx of visitors is also music to the ears of hotels in the area. the chinatown hilton sits on the parade route, and management here says a busy lobby means full rooms. >> it's probably like 99%, in terms of our occupancy, so the chinese new year coupled with other things, but chinese new year definitely bucks it up. >> reporter: this couple came in to celebrate their grandson's birthday. >> right now we're looking for a good lace to go to lunch so there will be a little more spending. >> reporter: coming back to our live shot, you can see big crowds here. visitors we spoke with tell us that they are planning on spending $1500 to 2,000 this weekend. live in san francisco, ktvu channel 2 news. some middle school students in the north are recovering from apparent thc poisoning. according to police a 13-year- old girl brought the substance to the santa rosa school yesterday, then mixed with it gatorade. she shared the drink with four other teens. all of the students suffered dizziness and stomach pain. no word on whether the girl who allegedly spiked the gatorade will face any charges. a contra costa sheriff's search and rescue team conducted another search for a man who went missing last month. the family of the man reported him missing back on january 27th. there had been several searches since then, but they have not produced clues. his family fears he may be suicidal. the results are in, republican party officials in maine just announced the winner from that state's caucuses. >> i'm now going to announce the winner of the maine gop presidential poll. and that winner is mitt romney. >> romney received 39% of the vote. ron paul is a close second with 36%. rick santorum and newt gingrich received 18% and 6% respectivelily. earlier today mitt romney spoke to a crowd of supporters in maine. >> i believe i'm the one person in this race what can beat the president. i believe it's essential that we beat this president, that we take america back, and that we see america as it's always been. >> the delegates will be allocated at a later date. also today mitt rom thee won the cpac poll. the survey is only symbolic but it does give romney's campaign another boost. romney described himself as having been a, quote, severely conservative governor and a washington outsider. rick santorum came in second. newt gingrich and ron paul trailed several points behind. president obama today pushed law make toartion extend the payroll tax cut that expires at the end of the month. >> congress needs to stop this middle-class tax hike from happening, period. no drama, no delay, and no idealogical side issues that have nothing to do with this tax cut. now is not the time for self- inflicted wounds to our recovery. >> congress originally extended the payroll tax cut for two months back in december after a huge partisan fight. mr. obama urged people to call, tweet, or e-mail their representative to help make the extension happen. house minority leader nancy pelosi is praising the president's compromise on birth control coverage. mr. obama yesterday says religious institutions can opt out of a federal requirement that employers provide free birthly control. pelosi, herself a practicing catholic, threw her support behind the compromise. she said the decision by at the present time illustrates his leadership and commitment to women's health. california senator dianne feinstein said today in san diego she regrets that president obama changed his stance but she said she also understands that he had no option but to change course. senator feinstein told a meeting of the california democratic party that affordable healthcare and protecting a woman's right to choose are among the party's priorities. it is an emotional story of survival. a dog near death at the oakland animal services is making quite a come-back. noel walker talked to the family who nursed van winkle back to health. a warning, some of the video might be upsetting. >> reporter: the care-free cocker spaniel this family has been fostering is going up for adoption. van winkle is special. his big paws match a big heart with a capacity to love people despite a horrific past. >> he's just the most lovable dog i've ever known. i just -- i don't know, there's something about him i could see. >> reporter: hard to believe this is the same dog. >> your ears are huge. >> reporter: he arrived in oakland animal services last summer bruised, emaciated, his fur matted beyond belief. the shelter named him win cal because like the character in the story he was in a forced hibernation. >> he was literally mummified. i must admit i was horrified. >> today the shelter director is thrilled. the dog once trapped in a cage of fur now plays like a puppy. years of neglect left van winkle, or winky, as he's affectionately called, totally deaf and blind in one eye. >> so to see him now like this running around and having just a fantastic time which actually started yesterday. last night's parade in rio comes just one week before carnival officially begins. the group anonymous is take credit this weekend for interrupting a u.s. government website and hacking websites belonging to the state of alabama. a cia website was down for about nine hours on friday. the spy agency hasn't commented on the matter, and anonymous has not said why it may have staged the attack. messages from sites associated with the group claim to have hacked a database of about 46,000 people in al bama in retaliation for that state's recent legislation aimed at illegal immigrants. family and friends gather to say good-bye to two boys believed killed by their father. [ music ] >> hundreds of people attended a memorial service in tacoma, washington this morning for five-year-old braden powell and his seven-year-old brother charlie. the boys died during a scheduled visit with their father, josh powell. >> this moment is about two beautiful boys. there have been all kinds of things said surrounding those boys and how we got here is a story well-known. but what we do here and the spirit that we do have here is up to us. >> officials say josh powell brought the boys into his home during a supervised visitation, attacked them with a hatchet, then set the house on reporter: well, i can tell you the parade is starting on time with the sound of firecrackers. you can see behind me, these are just some of the floats getting ready right here at second and market. now, this parade route showcases about 100 floats and 5,000 participants. it began here around 5:15. we spoke to one group earlier which had 80 young people walking a 168-foot-long dragon. of course, that's special because this is the year of the dragon. you can see so many dragons, very colorful. in fact this is the group we spoke to earlier. a lot of the participants and volunteers of this particular dragon are immigrants. i was told by the group organizer that it was very special for them to participate this year. just to give you an idea, some stats on the parade this one and a half mile parade route winds through the city heading west on geary street, returning east on post, north on kearny street. the finale, of course, is in china town. that kicks off the new lunar year. many of the floats have lights on them. just as soon as sundown, or rather the floats that came out here, visitors will get to enjoy that. of course, we'll have it here for you live coming up. reporting houston's publicist released the news just before 5:00 this evening. the cause of death and where she died is not yet known. reports say the 48-year-old star was seen at a pre-grammy party in hollywood thursday night appearing intoxicated. the singer rocketed to stardom in 1985 releasing several multiplatinum records, but in recent years her voice was marred by drug use, and she was in and out of rehab. we will have much more on the death of whitney houston tonight on the 10:00 news. the golden gate bridge officials have taken the latest step towards eliminating toll takers before the end of the year. the finance committee okayed changes to allow to the switch to all electronic tolls. the plan is meant to reduce the projected $97 million deficit over the next five years. people who don't use fast track transponders would have their license plate photographed, then receive a bill in the mail jooment research ors say they've -- researchers say they've stumbled onto another use for the drug viagra. they say the drug significantly improved the condition of three children with lymphatic malformation. that causes large growths on different parts of the body. a doctor tried viagra on a 10- week-old baby with severe hypertension because the drug was originally developed to treat high blood pressure and saw that it also reduced the size of the growths. bay area bird lovers have gathered on vallejos island today for the fly-away festival. thousands packed the event to learn about bird watching. organizers say the 70 aimed at celebrating and educating people about the one million shore birds and waterfowl. >> the migrating birds that come all the way from south america, up through the bay area, they stop here and feed. there's a very rich wetlands area. it is probably the most -- the best feeding ground that they can have. and without it, they wouldn't make their trip. >> this is the 16th year for the fly-away festival. the free event goes through tomorrow from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. more bad news this year for tahoe's ski season. how long it might be until the region gets its next major snowstorm. and look at this guy. hibernating gone wrong. where people found this bear hibernating for the winter in wisconsin. also tonight, clear skies are about to disappear. meteorologist mark meyer up next with when the bay area might expect some rain. take a look at this. a black bear in wisconsin has decided he is going to spend the winter in a drain pipe. some neighbors in wood county were driving past when they saw the bears' eyes shining from the culvert. they say it's not unusual for bears to settle into a spot like a drain. the bear will be allowed to stay until he is ready to move on. more bad news for skiers and snowboarders hoping for a big dose of snow. forecasters say they are not predicting any major storms for northern california in the coming weeks. right now many of tahoe's ski resorts are making do with man made snow with much of their tear raid now out of commission. >> it has been a dry winter. it's not raining now, which is good for the parade, but we sure could use some rain. >> and we do after couple of rain clouds in the five-day forecast, but nothing too major. in fact, historically in february we've had some pretty powerful storms move into parts of the bay area. that will not be the case. as you can see now we still have a few lingering clouds, even the chance of a few sprinkles in the short term. some lower clouds developing offshore, also right around pacifica. as for as current numbers, you can see most of the area already cooling off, back down into the 50s. santa rosa right now at 59 degrees. san jose 57. there's that 52 showing up in san francisco for the chinese new year parade. this was the time lapse looking across the basement i'm looking at the low cloud development. increasing, marching on shore, pushing into the bay for the overnight hours. and with that the clouds will be a constant as we head into your sunday with a few breaks out there especially for the morning hours. so that's why we do partly to mostly cloudy skies to start out your sunday. temperatures mainly in the upper 30s to the 40s. oakland about 45. definitely want to bundle up in san jose, starting out at 44 degrees. here you can see another system in the pacific. this is not a major deal but still mostly cloudy skies for your sunday, especially for the afternoon hours. there's that rain band offshore. most of your sunday, in fact, will be dry. but then by sunday night, into early monday morning, showers developing. forecast totals, as i mentioned, not a big deal. a few hundredth of an inch to maybe a quarter of an inch. winds out of the west-northwest 15 to 20 miles per hour. this will be somewhat of a snow producer up in the sierra. in fact, a winter weather advisory kicks in for sunday night and lasts until 4:00 monday. this is not a major snowstorm with expectations on the order of five to ten inches. here we go with our cloud and rainfall forecast. we are dry tomorrow morning at 8:00. just some clouds out there. by 5:00 that rain line approaches the region. by 10:00 tomorrow night you can count on some light to possibly some moderate rainfall, then monday just the possibility of a few spotty showers. it's not everywhere, but still the chance of a few showers. temperatures for tomorrow afternoon mainly in the 50s to right around sick degrees. san jose tops out at 60. san mateo 5. here's a look ahead at your five-day forecast with your weekendages view. more clouds for monday. there's that chance for a shower. another system could be moving in tuesday. the timing on that we do bring in a slight chance by tuesday afternoon, but a better bet by late tuesday afternoon and into the evening hours, then wednesday and thursday, parly cloudy skies. heather and ken, we do have the timing just right this year for the big parade pretty much happening right now. >> no up brel las. city is exploring the possibility of hosting the 2022 winter olympics? organizers trying to bring the winter olympics to tahoe say they welcome a new contender, salt lake city. the head of the reno/tahoe coalition says the more bids from american cities the better chances it's held on u.s. so i denver is also in contention for the 2022 olympics. the committee has until next year to submit a
