Police say they committed those crimes all over the bay area from San Francisco to menlo park. Now they are behind bars after more than a year of work by police. San mateo county Authorities Say they dismantled three street gangs after arresting their ring leader in what theyre calling operation sunny day. Were live outside the San Mateo County courthouse with information of some of the crimes theyre accused of. Reporter the case against these accused gang members are spelled out in three inindictments. One of them the longest one is 35 pages long. I have it here in my hand. It took a grand jury more than two months to review this case making it the longest grand jury in san m ateo county history. Prosecutors at the District Attorney say this drive by shooting that happened in september of 2012 is just one of the crimes that 16 accused gang members are connected to. It was a drive by shooting on the freeway on a weekend afternoon. Where kids were playing soccer on the field behind it. It was the middle of traffic out here on 101. Reporter according to a grand jury indictment. The target of a shooting was a rival gang member, he was shot but survived. This shooting, four murders and arm robberies were a despite between three palo alto gangs. These were murders. Nobody would come forward, they were just going to be forever unsoeverred murdering. Reporter it resulted in the arrest of 16 people. Investigators dubbed it afternoon sunny day borrowing one of the code phrases the gang used. The code word is its a sunny day in palo alto. That meant its a go on the murder. For some of them, i know i personally prosecuted some of their parents in years gone by. So its breaking that cycle. Its saying that no more. It ends here. A vigil just beginning right where the shooting happened on bernal park. David stevenson is there, and people who knew him are saying he had never been in trouble before. Reporter thats right, yes. And behind me is where nieto was shot. Police say nieto pointed a weapon on him and he was pronounced dead at the scene. People who had just spoken said he was licensed to carry a taser. Family members declined to speak to us but others who knew him describe him as someone who avoided trouble. We are learning that nieto was the subject of a retraining order after attacking a man with a taser in front of his family. We want justice, we want answers and we want to make sure this isnt covered up. Because a lot of times in situations like these get covered up. We want to make sure the public understands why we took the actions we take. This incident is no different so weve scheduled a town hall meeting for tomorrow. Dmv is responding after we reported that the agencies system may have been hacked and credit card information may have been stolen. Credit card numbers, expiration dates and security codes could all have been stolen. The dmv says it is investigating the outside vendor that processes quite a Card Transactions as a precaution. But that theres been no sign of a direct breeze. The dmv says it has heightened its security. Developing news now, six more bodies have been discovered after a devastating landslide in washington. That brings the death toll now to 16. Even so the search continues for any sign of life. The Governors Office released these aerial pictures today. You can see that giant crescent of dirt where trees and homes used to be. The landslide covered an entire square mile and was 15 feet deep in some places. Its estimated that the death toll could go even higher because doesens dozens of people are unaccounted for. County Officials Say because this happened on a weekend with little or no warning it probably made things worse. This event occurred on saturday. A lot of these individuals probably would have been gone away from those homes to work but it was saturday morning. They were home. Six more bodies have been recovered. They say that does not change the number of 108 people still unaccounted for. More than a dozen people missing and one of them is a california man. And he swore an oath to protect but a San Francisco officer is accused of rape while on duty. Why the effects goes far beyond the alleged victim. A lot of eyes on the Police Officer and how hes treated in court. People versus jeffrey graves. Reporter the six year veteran San FranciscoPolice Officer stepped up calmly in court today. 38yearold jeffrey graves is charged with one count of forcible rape. Graves and other prosecutors took the victim to a hotel. After the other officers left, graves is accused of raping the woman. In crimes of violence you dont want an accused to have weapons. Reporter just granted both request, graves was out on 100,000 bail and then waived his right to a preliminary hearing been 60 days. Graves kept his bulletproof vest on during the alleged rape and that there was physical evidence supporting the womans story. It will come down to two defenses. It didnt happen or it was consensual. Reporter some battered womens advocate say that consensual sex is a defense. He was still on duty. And what i want to know is where was his brain. I think the community isnt happy, but i want to assure the Community Everything is being looked at by the board. Were going to look at this just like any other case. Police hope a new picture will help investigators locate a burglary suspect. Investigators released this picture of jackson. Hes wanted on an 85,000 warrant. Jackson and another man is suspected on a home burglary in north oakland. Police say the other man is arrested but that jackson got away. He is described as 58 tall weighing about 140 pounds. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Oakland Police department. Today we know the name of a man killed by a suspected drunk driver in san leandro on saturday. 19yearold Jesus Godinez of vallejo was speeding and driving under the influence when he swerved right into oncoming traffic, hit another car head on and killed the driver. The coroner has now identified the victim as 32yearold alejandro ramirez. His 56yearold passenger injured. Schools are trading pencils and paper for computers. Several districts are about to start rolling out trial tests to students on computers. Its all part of our states plan to have all students take standardized tests electronically by next year. Cristina rendon in san pablo where that district says it is ready. Reporter the west contra costa district says theyve been going through a transition process since last year in september to prepare students to take tests on computers instead of paper. All School Districts in california have been divided up and have been given a window of opportunity to have their students take a trial run of the computer test. Some schools in the bay area will start that process tomorrow. Others will start in two weeks. But the purpose is to work out all the kinks of the computer test to make sure the technology is correct once its implemented and counts next year. The principal says he and his staff and students have taken a sample test online already. They say the process is pretty normal because students are used to using technology in the learning process. Secure browsers have been installed. We already started familiarizing our students with the testing. We already have the testing coordinators who have been trained. There are people in the room who will just keep quiet and just in shock and theres always people who are crying. Then theres those people who are angry and there were people having outburst. Chp officers responded to one incident, drivers driving in the other direction caused a bigger mess. Another car tried to navigate around the crash was rear ended slamming right into the truck. A person walking on a freeway onramp was hit by a vehicle this morning in oakland. It happened just before 9 00 a. M. On the broadway ramp to northbound 880. At least one lane at the ramp was shut down while emergency crews were at the scene. No word on why that person was walking on the ramp. The Highway Patrol is not just released any information about the persons name or condition. The investigation continued today into a train accident that killed a 16yearold friday night as he and his girlfriend were walking along the tracks. Inspectors from Union Pacific were at the the scene but the railroad has released little information. Witnesses say mateos moore shoved his girlfriend to the side as the train approached. It hit them both. He was killed, she was critically injured. He was such a sweet guy. You can tell he really loved micaela. They were always together. Reporter the couple was headed to a school dance when the train hit them. Carla campbell reports, the number of People Killed on Railroad Tracks in recent years has gone up dramatically both here in california and nationwide. Reporter people may think of train tracks as an easy way to get some where. But those are deadly assumptions. It takes about a mile for a train to stop. So by the time the engineer can see a person on the track, there really isnt much chance of stopping that train. Reporter we obtained data from the federal Railroad Administration showing 488 people were killed last year trespassing on tracks. Thats up 14 from 2012. 76 of those were in california. Thats a 10 increase from the prior year. Over the past 15 years, more people have been killed walking and playing along train tracks than were killed in cars hit by trains. Its a problem thats not going away. Reporter most People Killed along tracks are male and most of them are between the ages of 18 to 35. Safety advocates say its time for more education. Every time they are on railroad property, they are trespassing, theyre breaking the law. Theyre taking their lives in their hands. Reporter not only an illegal decision, potentially a deadly one.
