Person that likes the fog, pablo, he was on twitter last night. The form former third base man for the giants, expected to sign a new deal. So he is signing . Do you agree with this . I do think that maybe its a mental thing, he was part of a successful giants team. He has a bunch of rings, he played really well. The best that i have ever seen a guy play, its not that long ago, three years ago. What do you think, as a fan, do you embrace this . Its a name we know, it will bring people to the ballpark. San francisco is not taking a money risk. Thats important to me. We have a busy thursday morning. We are going to begin in the state of nevada, oj simpsons parole hearing is getting underway in about an hour, ken is joining us live from carson city to set the picture. Reporter well, heres what is happening right knew. You can see over my shoulder, some sheriffs deputies keepings the public out from this area from the building in carson city where the hearing will taking place at 10 00, we should have a decision before noon on whether or not oj simpson is going to be released. I wanted to show you the monitors here. They are going to show us, one, the parole commissioners talking and deliberating, and questioning oj simpson and the other monitor is a live feed from lovelock prison where oj simpson will be sitting at a table talking on the camera, thats the set up here, we have 30 media organizations here in carson city, there are another 30 media organizations out in lovelock nevada, oj simpson will be sitting down at 10 00 along with his supporters making their case that oj simpson is ready to be released from prison and that he should be. Ken, i know you are in the media area, are there people looking to see where you are . Reporter we have had a few people coming by, we are in a business park, there are a few office buildings, we are setback 100 yards from the street so you have to come to the parking areas to get to this building. We have had more employees from the nearby businesses coming by and also people from the parole commission, gerald 0 geraldo was here and some of the people that work at the prison were taking pictures with him. There are no protestors here. I do not want to give away our age but you and i were both working at ktvu fox news in 1994, i remember the huge media spectacle. You were coverings it live, is this anything like what you saw then . Reporter no, this is a big Media Presence but back then in los angeles, it was a different media situation, talking about age, see the woman over there in the blue and white dress, shes 23 years old, she was not even born when the trial was taking place, so sal, you and i are old. Ken, i might be a year or two p behind you guys, but i remember where i was when the bronco chase was happening, i remember, its still in the national consciousness. Yes. Reporter also to talk about that sense of history, of what this is all about, if i go back, sal, i remember, as a child when oj simpson played for usc. I remember when he won the heisman trophy, he was a big star in San Francisco. City college, he grew up in the city, he was such a big name in the late 60s, a tremendous running back with the Buffalo Bills then he came to San Francisco and joined the 49ers then the hertz commercials and he was in the movies, he had a magnetic presence, everyone loved oj simpson, i cannot remember anything ever saying anything negative about oj simpson his whole career, until the murders. Until that happened in los angeles, that is why it was such a big deal. He was so beloved in this country, when that happened, everything turned upside down, now he is 70 years old. We do not know what he will look like, there are no pictures of him for a while. We hear that his knees are not that great. He may be heavier, thats going to be the most striking thing, what he looks like, he would look different than the last time we saw him. He is a 70 year old man saying, i have done my time, i should be set free, i am not going to do anything like that again, the parole board is going to take that into consideration. The legal analysts are saying he should be released. It could happen on october 1, we have to hear what he has to say, if anyone has to say anything on why he stays behind bars, we will hear that, this is a conviction for a robbery, this is not supposed to o have anything to do with the murder trial. He was acquitted of those charges, this is a separate issue, there is still a civil case, he owes 33 million to the family of ron goldman, nobody believes he will be able to pay that back. You talk about the 60s and 70s, americans welcomed him into their house on tv with open arms, now there is an National Obsession with him since the trial. Do you think that if he is released or if he in the spotlight, do you think that curiosity gets renewed again . Reporter thats an open question, there is a lot oj simpson burn out. We have been through so much and its dominated the headlines for so many years, this could be, people hope, the final chapter, if he is released people hope le fade out into the sunset and we will not hear about him again but it depends how much of an appet irgs te there is for the details appetite there is for the details, like if he guess out, who will he date. What golf clubs allow him to be a member. There is a lot of people that disagree with the verdict in los angeles and are going to blame him forever, its up to him what happens if he gets released. Will he keep a low profile and stay out of everyones business and maybe golf and live a quiet life with members of his family and friends or will he go to the clubs, who knows, we will wait to see what happens, the amount of oj simpson news is going to depend on oj simpson, if he does things that attract attention, we will see how it plays out. Thank you, ken. We will wait and see, that decision will come in 20 minutes after the hearing comes to an end. There is no sign of oj simpson fatigue on twitter. My question was, its expected that he will be released. We are asking, do you think he will lead a private life or go back to being in the spotlight. 47 say private life. 53 say back in the spotlight. Keep it here on ktvu fox news for complete coverage of the hearing, we have special coverage starting an 10 00 and we bring the decision live. We dug into the ar kiefsz to archives to find details and we have more later. Allie rasmus is in berkeley to spain what the Uc Berkeley College republicans are upset about. Reporter universal officials denied the request to have ben shapiro come to the college. He wanted to come speak to the students but the University Said they do not have a venue to accommodate the crowds. He is a commenter with breitbart and he has a radio show where he weighs in on a thumb of topics. The university met with College Republicans to find another place to host ben shapiro but the republicans are saying, this is just another way for the university to prevent another controversial speaker from appearing on the campus. I do not know where he is appearing but the university should give him a chance, but we have seen this before, its not always as productive as you hope it is. Its berkeley, you should be able to do what you want, but we have to keep the students safe. Reporter in february, riots broke out when Milo Yiannopoulos came to the campus, his speech was called off at the last minute because of the violence, after that an Ann N Coulter canceled her speech at the campus because of safety concerns. A man that recently graduated said this is part of a pattern among university officials. Here we go again, we are going to stop people from speaking and bringing divorce fied diversified political voices. Reporter now in light of some of the controversy with the political speakers, the university is in the process of creating a policy for all of the student groups that want to bring speakers to the campus, they have to give the university eight weeks notice before they invite people to speak and also if there are safety concerns, the committees have to meet with the Uc Berkeley Police prior to the event. Its been six weeks since President Donald Trump took office, we look at the job he has done and the challenges he is facing. Plus the latest on the cancer diagnoses for Jonathan Mcleod we have more coming up on ktvu news right after the break from the first moment you met it was love at first touch and all you wanted to do was surround them in comfort and protection thats why only pampers swaddlers is the 1 choice of hospitals to wrap your baby in blanketlike softness and premium protection mom oh hi baby so all they feel is love wishing you love, sleep and play. Pampers. Welcome back to ktvu news, all of the news, weather and information you need to know throughout your day. We are continuing to follow the news that arizona senator john mccain was dagged with brawng cancer diagnosed with brain cancer, drtion made the diagnoses while removing a blood clot over the senators eye. God knows how this ends, not me, but this disease has never had a more worthy opponent. His family is currently reviewing Treatment Options including radiation and chemotherapy. President donald trump said nor john mccain has always been a feuter. We send our thoughts and prayers to the whole family. Get well soon. President obama tweeted, john mccain is an American Hero and one of the bravest fighters i have ever known, cancer does not know what its up against, give it hell, john. The senator tweeted, i appreciate the out pouring of support, i will be back soon, stand by. Its been six months since President Donald Trump took over the white house, we have our senior Political Writer for the San Francisco chronicle. He promised a border wall, he promised to repeal and replace obamacare, he called himself the ultimate deal maker, has any of this happened . No. Nothing. But there are some things he can do to get outof the box, number one, get out of the house, the president was very good when he was on the road, campaigning, going to rallies, he has done five of those but he has gone to states where he already won, go to bli states. Another one, get off the golf course, he has played on his own golf courses 40 times, go out and see americans. Is that because it looks bad. Could he say that there is deal making happening, or is it the perception problem. Its the perception but also, he ran as a poop populist, he should be that. Some people said, as soon as he gets into the oval oofs, we are going to see President Donald Trump doing great. His tweets may not be as mean spirited as before but he has gotten no democratic support, he came into office as a builder, that was his profession, so if he went for the Infrastructure Program early, that would have gotten bipartisan support and he would have something to show for what he did, we are starting to build the roads. That would have also made a better relationship with congress, he could have then gone on to tax reform. He might have peeled off a couple of democrats for that. But as of now, he has no healthcare reform, a day one promise, and no legislation. Does this matter to President Donald Trumps supporters, they are sticking with him no matter what. The polls are solid for him in Trump Country but his message is not resonating with them for healthcare, he did nothing to support the healthcare reform act. In the counties that supported him, support for the healthcare reform was low. Lets talk about what is happening in washington, do you foresee Jeff Sessions staying as attorney general for long. When your boss says, i should not have hired you, what can you say, you have to figure he is a lame duck, then who does he go to . Does he pick another republican from the senate. Why take that job when you know you are going to be undercut by your boss for doing the right thing, he did the right thing by recusing himself and he got his knees cut from under him. He did appoint a Supreme Court justice. If he left a conservative legacy, would would it be appointing another justice. Absolutely, thats why the base loves him. Going back to your question, they continually point to the knee gore gore appointment. Gorsuch appointment. But lets face it, these people are all in their 70s and 80s, he could have a chance to appoint another justice. Is this the case where the president might take his own advise, he he said that the republicans are not doing enough of a good job of selling the health plan, has he done a good job selling himself. No, he gives conflicting messages, repeal, replace, let obamacare fail. They are conflicting messages, how can they have a path forward when he is giving them five paths forward. A while back, president clinton was called the teflon president , now President Donald Trump is being seen as that, he does something negative and his supporters will support him. They will support him. They have not been hurt financially, in a year if things get worse, healthcare or income, we will see slippage among those people but his overall Approval Rating is 35 , the lowest of any president at this point in his tenure. You should read joe, he wrote, President Donald Trump has been in the white house for six months and he has torched the most precious things a new president guess, his honeymoon. Thank you joe. That smoke continues to work its way over the sierras and some of it is moving into the lake tahoe area, if you are going up there, is hazy, thats going to continue, i do not see any change in the wind druks, the fog is there for some, not everyone. 50s to 70s, some inland areas are going to be warm. They are struggling to get out of the fog. Overall its a typical july day for the bay area, 60s to 90s. We cool down next week, just subtle changes. Students were sent an an alert yesterday. We are waiting for more information from the department of Public Safety on campus. Thank you. Four san jose jail inmates overdosed yesterday and the main jail was put on lock down. They were taken to the Santa Clara Medical center where they are expected to make a full recovery, investigators want to know how the drugs were smuggled in. There is new information about the fire last week in downtown lafayette that destroyed nine businesses, investigators believe a lit cigarette started the fire but they do not think it was on purpose. The fire started on an outside patio of a restaurant and it spread fast destroying a chamber of Commerce Building and seven other businesses. Those are just some of the other morning headlines. A new Housing Development is moving forward in the city of oakland disiet foir recent construction fires in this area, developers broke ground on the new project yesterday. It replaces an old parking lot. The building is also across the street from a development that burned down two weeks ago while he was being built. Investigators also declared three other construction fires as arson. We are working with the city and various federal agencies. The new complex will have 3200 3200 apartments, 3200 apartments. 15 will be for lower income residents. The development is expected to be completed in two years. The San Francisco library is getting a face lift. The idea is to make it more friendly while giving the building a nice exterior, others are complaining its designed to keep the homeless off the grounds. Reporter its been a fixture in the neighborhood for years, a library, is a popular place for families but thats not all. This library in the past two years has become unpleasant to come to because it does not feel safe. Reporter the library has become a haven for the homeless, they loiter by day and camp out by night. Nsdz, its a warm and safe escape from the elements including a bathroom and its creating a big issue. Someone got robbed last saturday. He was volunteering to clean up around the library. There were reports of theft around the library, litter, debris and noise complaints. Reporter the Library Posted signs and stepped up security and held a series of Community Meetings where they developed a plan to make the grounds safer, phase one is underway now. We want to make it welcoming. Thats the top thing, people should be able to walk by a branch and say, i want to go in there. Reporter but critics are saying that the library is being designed to make the homeless spend less time there, cement walls are slated to have railings, these walls are popular sitting spots but they will have the railings in the plan, also the area where the homeless camp is being replaced by rock formations and thorny trees. They are a different landscape feature. Reporter john king is the urban design critic for the San Francisco chronicle. You have six places to sit as opposed to 15 or 20. Reporter he said that the plans use a controversial design trick called defensive architecture meant to keep people from getting too comfortable. We are not creating a space that is defensive architecture, we are about making a space welcoming to all. Its defensive. Its honest, we are saying we are not trying to defend ourselves against people using the library, we are defending against people taking the place over. Reporter king said its the tension of urban living, a balancing act between an open door and safe usage. Some of this is, we want to chase undesirables away, some of it is we want to strike a balance. Give people a place to sit for a few hours but we do no the want to get taken over by tents or drug users. Reporter the library decided to not make sla changes to the back patio but that area is locked after hours, they also employ a full time social worker that Services Everyone including the homeless. Lets talk about harvey milk, he library is named after him. What would he say about all of this . He would be engaged with us in talking and figuring out what is happening here and he would be our partner in creating the space that is welcoming to all. Thats what i hope would be happening. It is a sign of the times, in a city where the balancing, you know, the line just seems so fragile these days. Thank you, frank. The first phase of the project is set to be completed in a matter of weeks, phase two begins after that. Coming up, shes one of the original dream girls, you know her for her soulful voice, we have jennifer holiday joining us in minutes before her performance in the bay area tomorrow night we have more coming up on ktvu news right after the break how your clothes smell can say at lot about you. Thats why new downy protect and refresh conditions fibers to lock out odors. So clothing odors dont do the talking for you. Lock out odors with new downy protect and refresh. Welcome back to ktvu news, all of the news, weather and information you need to know throughout your day. There is one woman closely associated with dream girls, this weekend, bay area fans can hear her prorming a number of broadway classics and some of her signature songs in San Francisco. Jennifer holliday joins us live in the studio. Good morning, thank you for coming. Was it a dream, huston texas to broadway, how did that happen, how did you leave texas. I gof discovered singing in the choir got discovered singing singing in the choir, a man came up to me and said, you should be singing on broadway. I was 17 years old. He had known about a tour that was traveling on the road. I auditions and got hired that day, i never wept back to huston. Did i have the broadway bug or was it given to you. No, i had been singing in church. I mean, when you are in the church, especially in the black baptist church, they let you know if you are good or not. I knew i had Something Special but not something that could transfer to broadway. You had to know you were good. You have won all of these awards. But even that you have no coasted. I have coasted. There were many, many years where nobody had even thought about me, then the dream girls movie came out in 2006 and i got rediscovered and got a new lease on life. What are i going to do tomorrow night . Do you have a favorite. I have no favorite. I am a singer, i prefer to sing. I only have one big hit, so i will be doing that song but i will be doing a lot of confer tunes, i have learned a lot about jazz music, i will be paying tribute to some of the great ladies of jazz as well and so i am so excited about that. In between songs, do you talk to the audience and let them know why the song that you are going to sing is special to you or important to you . I do, i talk about the history of the great jazz songs, a lot of people do not know that they are sometimes songs from failed broadway shows, a lot of the great jazz standards were once in broadway shows, i will be doing my song from dream girls, i can never go anywhere without singing, i do not mind, its still my song and i am glad to sing it. You were invited to perform at the inauguration and then you pulled out. Do you find that art is a way to bring people together or can art even be divisive. Art wants to be divisive now because everyone has an opinion and a stake but i think that music heels. I think that people want to make statements, i just want to talk about love and sing about love. I love america, i sang for four other president s in both parties. Right now biparsship is bipartisanship is hard these days, i sometimes say, we are not doing america right now, we are choosing sides, i choose love, i want to talk about it. I choose america still. For your show tomorrow, its mellow, how can you, with all of your power, mellow and that does not square with me. People are going to be surprised. I have grown a lot since i was a young girl on broadway. I was only 21 in dream girls, people only know me for my big songs, but you think about jazz and ella fitzgerald, they interpreted songs. I wanted to show how i developed. Do you have a favorite jazz artist. I love sarah vaughn. Also ella, its her 100th birthday this year, but i love vaughn, thats what i am moving towards. Okay. Some of the best performances i go to are my favorite bands, maybe they are loud but when they tone it down and bring out a stool and a guitar, i love it. I have learned to tone music down and tone my life down, i am the happy yeft i have ever been, my life is going great but before this, i had learned to just take pleasure and roll with life in a calmer state and wait until tomorrow. Not panic everyday and worry about every little thing, one day at a time. I am glad you are singing but more so, i am glad you are happy. Thank you, i appreciate that. Welcome to the bay area, have a great performance. You can see her tomorrow night. We have all of the tibt information on our website, ktvu. Com Ticket Information on our website, ktvu. Com, Jennifer Holliday performing tomorrow night in San Francisco. The San Francisco giants are making a move which might make some fans feel a bit no, sir tankic. Nostalgic. Pablo may be coming back. He is expected to play third base for the giants aaa team after he clears waivers. Boston still has to pay most of his contract. The warriors have come up with a way to finance their new arena, is like a long term interest free loan from the fans, Ticket Holders will have to pay the price of a game plus a fee, the warriors will have to pay back the fees in 30 years, the warriors plan is different because they refund the money.
