And chilly spots in the north bay. Palo alto, 58 degrees. San francisco 54, 51 in haywood, and brentwood. Its going to be a breezy saturday. Cool to mild temperatures very similar to yesterday. As we get into the back end of the weekend we do have slight scattered showers for the forecast, a little bit of snow including an advisory, i will detail this for you coming up. Okay. Lets get to news from overnight. One person dead, another injured after a crash on interstate 80 happened in crockett just after 1 00 this morning near the sky whenever way offramp there. The chp says this car took the eastbound offramp at a very high rate of speed and went down an embankment before you dont hear turning. The driver was killed. The passenger taken to the hospital with just minor injuries. The cause still under investigation. Also new from overnight a pedestrian was hit and killed on highway 101 in san jose just after 1 30 this morning near the tulley road on ramp. Its not clear why that pedestrian was on the highway. Drugs or alcohol may have played a role. A developing store at a Historic Church in berkeley are moving sunday services after a fire raced through their complex. Christian kafton is live at the First Congressional Church near the uc berkeley campus. Reporter good morning, guys. We are here at First Congressional Church you can see the roof open to the sky. The walls bowing out, a lot of damage done to this building in that fire yesterday. We have fire crews here on scene to make sure there arent flareups and also making sure that the building doesnt collapse. If you take a look, you can also see that channing and dana are shut down in one block in going to the north and going to the west. The concern, of course, is that this building could collapse at any time. The fire started yesterday afternoon and quickly spread through the upper levels of the church. Berkeley fire crews acted quickly and were able to safe the sank aware inside the church. Sanctuary inside the church. The concern is that the walls could collapse. The building inspector is set to come out later to assess. Meanwhile the investigation into how this fire started also under way at this time. Church officials confirm work was being done on the roof to install solar panels. Neighbors saw workers on the roof with a blow torch moments before the fire started and spread. I saw two workers up there and they scattered real quick. And then the Fire Department came in, threw a ladder up. They started to cut and venting the whole roof and then it spread throughout. Reporter now, at this time the fires still under investigation so officials not confirming that the workers were the cause of the fire. Meanwhile, cal taking on utah today at 3 00 at home, so you can expect the area to be packed with people. Getting around this area is going to be tough because of street closures. Coming back to our live shot you can see some of the fire crews on scene here. The concern is that parts of the building could clops. Theyre certainly on scene making sure anybody walking or driving by is not in danger. We will continue to monitor the situation here and were waiting on the building inspector to show up to figure out exactly how safe the church is. And christian, back to the sal game, even though its not till 3 00, that might cause some issues, i would imagine, because its hard to get around campus on any game day, let alone when roads are shut down. Just parking in the area because if you take a look, if channing and dana are shut down for a block, youre talking about possibly 50 to 100 Parking Spaces out of play, that means the spaces that are available theres going to be more competition, and, of course, simply maneuvering arnold the campus is going to be tough because of the closures today. Police responded about 9 00 last night. Officers located a suspicious man hiding at a nearby street, colgate drive, a suspect taken into custody. No word yet on charges. Investigators reportedly did not find a weapon. The incident happened a few blocks from James Logan High School where the school was facing oakland in a Football Game. We have not received any reports of injuries. A fire in a carport of an apartment in new arc under investigation that started just before 9 00 last night. Firefighters able to put it out quickly. Fire didnt spread to any of the other units and everyone able to make it out safely. Firefighters say there was a car in the dumpster in the area near the fire. We dont know the cause but they have some ideas about what may have started the fire. Probably in the area of the dumpster sometimes people just throw things that are hot, that or the vehicle one of those two things. That fire damaged two cars and that carport itself. Firefighters say it also caused minor damage to a structure behind the carport. If youre heading to San Francisco this weekend youll have plenty of company. Thousands of people will be in the city for several events. The hardly strictly Bluegrass Festival kicked off yesterday in Golden Gate Park. More than 700,000 people expected to attend the event. And the festival is just the start of a busy few weeks in San Francisco. Bringing a lot of people into the city, all in all i say its a win for the city. Police described this person of interest in the case as a white man seen in black clothes and orange glasses. Police are calling the packages bias motivated and say they were left around uc sant cruz this week with a note that refers to the white power movement. Police say similar packages were found around the city as well. Happening today a free training event to help leaders find constructive ways to help Mental Health issues around the bay area. They are hoping to try to identify those who suffer from Mental Illness and strategies to help them out. It is from 10 00 to 3 30 and will be held at the Hilltop Community church in richmond. The themes are amazing, but the beauty is the throwback to kim burtons stopmotion animation. You get to see some oldschool stop motion animation. If youre not familiar with that its puppets moving 24 times in a second to create motion. It could take weeks just to get minutes of a sequence done in a movie. But this film is brilliant. I love the messages about acceptance and love. I five it a 4 out of 5. It feels a bit long in the middle, but the end is all worth it. Next up deepwater horizon based on the true story from back in 2010. We all know the story, but 11 lives were lost that day and night, and the film tells their story, the specific story about the human beings on board of that rig. Now we get the human story of what happened to all of them specifically Mike Williams whos played by mark wal burg in the field. He made it out alive after jumping 10 stories into the firey water to save his own life. Williams is played by Mark Wahlberg in this fill. A huge cast. The film starts off with very heavy dialogue and character building and then it leads up to the explosion and the movie is beyond intense. You will find yourself completely immersed in the intensity. The effects are amazing and the understanding of how the explosion occurred. The director takes you down below the water and explains to you how everything happens. So if youre not familiar with the technology or the Science Behind it, its very interesting to learn that and its very easy to understand in the movie. Its emotional, intense. I love the director. This is definitely one of his best movies hes made so far. He also made friday nightlights as well. Temperatures on the cool tied, mid 40s to mid 50s at this hour. Well start at the north bay where we are a bit nippy. 50 degrees in nevada right now. Around the bay, upper 40s in berkeley, we have low 50s in San Francisco, and into the south bay. As we get into the afternoon temperatures on the cool side, a little bit below average for this time of year, a lot like yesterday. The afternoon breeze will be with us as well. Theres the color coding there for you. Everybody in the green or the yellow indicating low 60s, low 70 for most a few mid upper 70. Even the sacramento valley. Crews are are there to monitor some hot spots, right . Reporter thats one of the concerns, frank, is hot spots and, of course, the danger of the building collapsing. Take a look. Crews are getting a a much better look at whats going on out here and the stability of the building. Were expecting a building inspector out here anytime within the next hour or. So one of the Major Concerns is you can see the roof of first congressional completely gone. That has compromised the integrity of the walls. The danger is that the walls could collapse out. Foot traffic and car traffic going on dana and going on channing both shut down at this time because they dont want anybody to be in the area in case it does collapse. One chimney has already collapsed. The danger is that more of the building could collapse. For the time being traffic blocked on channing and dana going west and north to make sure no one is in danger. The fire started yesterday afternoon and quickly spread through the upper levels of the church. Berkeley fire crews acted quickly and were able to save the inside. Im so grateful to them for their action in containing the fire so the damage wasnt worse. Reporter neighbors tell ktvu that that work was under way yesterday afternoon. They say they saw a torch swinging on a rope shortly before the fire began. Then they say they saw workers scattering. Fire officials wont confirm that as a cause until the investigation is over. You can see how much damage has been done to the building. We are waiting for the building inspector to arrive to update us on the status of this building. The the concern is this possibility of collapse, how much of the building can be saved. These are questions were hoping to get from the inspector once they arrive. One of the other issues that is going on, cal taking on utah today at 3 00. So with channing shut down, with dana shut down, one of the Major Concerns for anybody coming into the area is parking and getting around this area with the game going on a little bit later on today. If you are going to be coming out to the cal game, of course Public Transportation always recommended, seller recommended today because of the street closures in the area certainly membered today because of the street closures. Theres a lot of reason for people to be concerned and take some extra time. If youre a cal fan, you know theres not a lot of parking anyways. How far away is channing from campus itself . Reporter well its just a couple of blocks away. Its basically two blocks away from memorial from the rsf, from the cal campus. If you go two blocks to the north, youd be on the uc berkeley campus. Of course, were about a block, a block and a half away from telegraph avenue, too, which is a major boulevard going through the area. So this is certainly going to affect traffic and getting around the area. No doubt. Okay. Hopefully they can get their work done and delete and people can get to the game as well. Were also following the latest developments on the loma fire burning in the Santa Cruz Mountains in a few hours well get an update on the fire in morgan hill. The meeting starts at 10 00 this morning at the Morgan Hill Community and cultural center. So far the fire has burned more than 4300 acres and destroyed 12 homes. This morning the fire is 56 contained. High winds, dry conditions, and steep terrain is taking it tough to fight. The area were working in is so steep its difficult to stand and difficult to work with hose lines. More than 2,000 firefighters are battling the fire. The cause is still under investigation. Strong winds blew a fire that threatened a apartment complex and a money home park. Residents were order to shelter in place. Fire crews fought the fire from the ground and air. They brought in air tankers to to drop retardants. Firefighters monitored the area overnight to make sure there were no flareups. It is 7 36 the cause of a bigger crash on 580 near tracy now under investigation. The truck went off a bridge, caught fire, sparked a small grass fire. The driver was rushed to the hospital. We dont know their condition this morning. And there are a couple of developments in connection to the Bay Area Police sex scandal. Ricardo perez pleaded not guilty to charges he had sex with a minor. He resigned as deputy while the investigation unfolded. Meanwhile the city says it received a 30 million claim alleging Improper Conduct by its Police Officers against jasmine buslin. She is the selfproclaimed sex worker who had relationships with dozens of Police Officers, some of which apparently happened when she was under the age of 18. Her attorneys have filed similar claims in oakland, San Francisco, liver more and alla immediate a county. Two drifters will stand trial for a pair of killings. The case against moreson lamply and lila aldehood. The two are accused of killing a tourist on a park trail in fairfax last year. A third suspect, sean angold already pleaded guilty to seconddegree murder and as part of a plea bargain he will testify against his friends. They are facing a a 15year prison sentence in connection with the killings. Police getting ready to begin a yearlong crack down if youre a speeder. The idea is to create safer streets for pedestrians. Heres a map of where the efforts are focused. The green are the top priorities, areas like market, gary, and 19th avenue. Reporter cars speeding through the afternoon commute friday say a team of San Francisco police armed with new laser guns ride writing out traffic tickets. We pulled a gentleman over this afternoon who was doing 50 Miles Per Hour thon street on a 25mileperhour zone. Reporter the team showed us the new lidar instrument which uses lasers instead of radar to record speed. The laser bounces off the vehicles license plate or hood. Theres a light. I can see some in the distance and the speed of the vehicle. Reporter San Francisco Police Received 32 new devices this week which are even more lightweight and shaped like a pair of binoculars. Funding comes from a 2 million federal grant which will also be used to fund extra staffing for the crackdown. The officers that will be working these details, this will be on top of their regular shifts, so these will be additional officers, additional patrols to the tune of 100 to 132 hours. Reporter 132 extra Traffic Enforcement hours per week for an entire year. The sfmta analyzed speed and traffic collision data and identified the 26 highpriority corridors shown in green and blue where extra Speed Enforcement teams will be stationed at random hours. Its part of the citys vision zero effort to eliminate pedestrian fatalities after 24 pedestrians were killed in 2015. Its not about writing tickets. Reporter 18yearold Kenneth Singleton is getting ready for a big game, a game his father never thought hed reach just three years ago. That was horrible, man. He was in a coma. He had been in surgery for five hours, and i didnt know if he was going to make it. Reporter kenneths father james says the day he was told his son had been shot was the day that forever changed their lives. It was january 23rd, 2013, kenneth was hanging out with a friend near the flacks el sorito when they were approached by two men. They asked me for my shoes and i said no, so she shot me and my friend. One bullet bounced off his back and the other one came out at the stop of his stomach and thats the one that did the damage. Reporter after that his son became depressed and was on a downward spiral. He started giving up on life a little bit. It was a struggle. He didnt understand why someone would shoot him like that. It was hard to try to get him to keep living at times. Reporter with hard work and dedication, life took a positive turn. The shooters are behind bars and kenneth changed schools. Now hes wearing number 30 and Kennedy High Schools running back playing in his first home Football Game since the shooting. Although hes overcome a lot, gun violence is still on his mind. I dont want to say i got used to it, but after you hear it more and more, its like you get numb to it. One person is dead and another is injured after a crash on interstate 80 in crockett. This happened just after 1 am. Chp said the car took the eastbound offramp at a high rate of speed, crashed into a sign, drove to the field and went down an embankment before overturning. Chp said the driver was killed and the passenger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The cause is still under investigation. A pedestrian was hit and killed on highway 101 in san jose. This happened just after 1 30 am. Know that pelly road onramp. Right now it is not clear why the pedestrian was on the highway. Or of drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the crash. Berkeley fire crews are monitoring the scene of a major fire that ripped through a church in berkeley. The centuryold building is now in danger of collapse. Meanwhile the church could affect thousands of people on the uc berkeleys campus. Christien kafton is live at the church with what firefighters are doing at this time. Reporter good morning. If you look you can see fire crews are still on scene as we push past that you can get a sense of how the building is looking this morning. Were getting our first a chance to really examine the building. Were waiting for the inspector to arrive to look as well. You can see the roof of the building is gone which has compromised the integrity of the walls. There is a danger those walls could collapse outward. That is why the streets are shut down in this area. To make sure if those walls to collapse out, no one will get hurt. One chimney has already collapsed. Inspectors are waiting to see how safe this building is. We are waiting for the inspector to arrive. For the time being, traffic is blocked on channing and dana going west and north to make sure no one is put in danger. The fire started yesterday afternoon and spread into the upper levels of the church. Berkeley fire crews acted quickly and were able to save the sanctuary inside the church. No one was killed or injured. At one time there was some very tense moments as a skylight collapsed and trapped a firefighter. That firefighter had to call out made a. Was pretty terrifying. You never want to hear that and we were all coming out of the building. It was fairly chaotic. When you hear a mayday all attention goes to that person. Reporter fortunately the firefighter managed to make it down the ladder and climb out of a second story window. As to the cause of this fire, church Officials Say work was underway to install solar panels on the roof and neighbors tell us they saw a torch swinging on a rope shortly before the fire. Then they saw workers scattering. Fire officials are not confirming that as a cause of the fire until their investigation is complete. The concern weve been talking about all morning long, cala taking on you tall at 3 pm. With channing and dana said down, that affects the flow of traffic around the campus. It affects the ability to park in this area. If you are coming out to the game, keep that in mind. You do have major roads in the area shut down. There are some Unanswered Questions regarding a shooting that hammons near a High School Football game in union city. Police responded to reports of a gunshot just after 9 pm last night. Officers located a suspicious man hiding at the nearby street of colgate drive. The suspect was arrested but no word on charges. Investigators did not find a weapon. The incident happened a few blocks from james logan high. The school was facing bishop odowd of oakland in a Football Game. We have not received reports of injuries. A fire in a carport of an apartment complex in newark is under investigation. The started before 9 00 last night. Firefighters were able to douse it quickly. Fire did not spread to the Apartment Units but everyone was able to make it out safely. Firefighters say there was a car near the dumpster. They do not know the cause but they have some idea about what may have started the fire. Probably in the area of the dumpsters. Berkeley fire crews are on the scene of a fire that heavily damaged a centuryold church. Christien kafton has been live all morning. Crews are still checking on hotspots. The stability of the building is in question as well. Good morning. Reporter weve seen another fire crew come through the area. This crew that has been here since we first arrived, keeping an eye on the building and watching the surrounding area to make sure no one walks in the area. The major concern is that the building could be compromised. Crews are getting their first daylight look at the church. One of the Major Concerns is the structural stability of the building if you look you can see the roof is gone and the concern is without the roof tying the walls together, walls could collapse outward. That is one reason why crews have shut down traffic for one block in each direction here on channing and dana. The fire started yesterday afternoon and spread through the upper levels of the church. Berkeley fire crews acted thickly and were able to save the sanctuary. The building inspector is set to come out any minute weve seen a couple of contracting crews in the area. We are expecting the building inspector at any time. The investigation as to how the fire started is now underway. Church Officials Say work was being done on the roof to install solar panels. As of this morning the fire is cal fire said high winds, dry conditions and a steep terrain are making it tough to fight. The area were working in is so steep that its difficult to stand and certainly to work with hand tools and hose lines. More than 2000 firefighters are battling that fire. The cause is still under investigation. Strong winds and dry conditions band of fire that burned nearly 20 acres of brush in south novato. The fire threatened an apartment complex in a mobile home park. The blaze broke out around noon. Residents were ordered to shelter in place. Cal fire crews fought the fire from the ground and air. They brought in air tankers to drop at the retardant. In the end there was no damage to any homes. Firefighters monitored the area overnight to make sure there were no flareups. One chimney has already collapsed and now inspectors are examining the billing to see how safe it is for the time being traffic is blocked on channing and dana going west and north to make sure no one is put in danger. The fire started yesterday afternoon and spread through the upper levels of the church. Fire crews acted quickly and were able to save the sanctuary. We started august 8 with our sparkling wines and we had a cool august that put us on the brakes for a while and slowed us down. As you know we had 100 degree heat the first part of this we. That got us excited again. The vines, as you see and the greats have come through that heatwave well. Folks were out here picking all night long into the Early Morning hours. Direct. Crews get started at night. It is nice and cool for them. And the grapes are nice and cool. Now we can head of to the winery and see what happens up there. 40 times, they will knock out the entire 40 ton today . Our goal is to get it into the winery by the end of the day. What is going on here . This is a simple part of the process. Its called a pump over. What were trying to do is extract all the flavor, body and color. From the picking to the making and now to the tasting. You may be surprised to know that the winemakers actually responsible for everything from the dirt to the bottle. Now we are full circle park you see how it was made and now we get to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Chairs. Tears. This is fabulous wine. But there are years when youre in there are vintage differences. If we have a cool year or a lot of rain in the vintage, fortunately in california we do not deal with it too much because we have a great climate. There is a little extra work for us. More time in the vineyard or the winery. And we shepherd it through the winemaking process and get every ounce of flavor out of the grapes we can. A photo of a Police Officer comforting a fouryearold boy is getting a lot of attention on social media. Officer jones was at a school earlier this week when she came across a little boy crying on the floor. She got down on the floor with him, wiped away his tears and told him it was going to be okay. The boy was apparently having a bad day but he perked up after the officer talked to him. She posted a photo of the moment on facebook inroad, as an adult sometimes we all want all we want is one person to stop, get on our level and maybe wipe our tears.
