Found out that hundreds of homes may have been destroyed in the fire as the flames moved into the lower lake area. Now, it started saturday night off highway 29 and Clayton Creek road. Heres a map of that area to take a look. Ktvus alex savidge there in lake county this morning. Boy, whats behind you tells the story, alex. Reporter yeah, pam, dave, good morning to you. The devastation really incredible here. We are getting a better look at how this fire just swept through lower lake, and this was essentially a winddriven firearm storm. It blew through the downtown area where we are this morning. It caused an incredible amount of damage. A number of businesses were destroyed, including what you see here. The offices for habitat for humanity of lake county. This is still smoldering here, whats left of this building. And we have fire crews who are here at this scene in the downtown area trying to put out some of the hot spots. Next door you can see this was an auto shown, we are told. And you can see cars and build edges were just leveled as the fire blew through here yesterday. We also were told a short time ago again that hundreds of homes, in all likelihood, were lost in this fire. Let me show you video of what the scene looked like yesterday. The clayton fire burned through this area and exploded late in the day yesterday because of strong winds and hot weather. Those winds picked up and this fire just took off, really. 6,000 people forced to evacuate this area. They actually cleared out and evacuated st. Helena hospital in this area, and there were a number of People Living in the area forced to pack up their belongings and get out as quick as they could. We got an update a short time ago from the spokesperson for calfire, and he talked about the destruction caused by the clayton fire. It is obvious that the fire activity that we witnessed here yesterday was nothing less than ferocious. This fire literally came through this town like a wave of water. Instead, it was a wave of fire that devastated a number of businesses, local homes, residents and so forth. Reporter and pg e says that there are at least 8,000 customers in this area without power right now because of this fire. Again, it is still burning, and it is still actively burning just sort of north and east of the town of lower lake in the direction of clear lake. Crews feel like they have a handle on this fire. Pam and dave, they felt the same way with this fire yesterday. Things sort of calmed down early on in the day. The winds were calm. They felt like they had a handle on this fire and then it exploded, took off and did all the damage that you see behind us. So they are not going to let their guard down here as they try to get a handle on this fire. Right now they are calling the containment still just 5 . We will get an update, we hope n a short time. We are looking behind you. We see the firefighters off to your left over your left shoulder. We are worried, just wondering about the winds right now. Steve paulson is standing by. Whats the wind feel like right now . Reporter well, i dont feel any winds route now. So we have very, very calm conditions. But thats typically what youre going to have in the overnight hours into the Early Morning hours. The question now becomes, and obviously its a question for steve, is what we are what these crews are going to be facing as the sun comes up here and we get into the heart of the day. Obviously, we know temperatures are going to rise. The question is, how much will the winds pick up and how will that impact the firefight . And have they told you, alex, do they have an idea how many more homes are still considered threatened by this . Reporter its quite a few because, again, you have about at least 6,000 or so people who were evacuated because of that fire. So obviously still you have hundreds if not thousands of homes that could potentially be in the path of the fire. There is a lot of folks whose places are still in jeopardy. Calfire crews are working hard to save as many homes as they can. Alex, thank you for that update. Pass along our best wishes to all of them. We will check in with you through the morning. We want to talk about the people who have had to evacuate. Some people thought they were safe until the flames moved in and surrounded their homes. Looking at pictures of people with their pets. Todd and carrie stayed as long as they could. When that fire changed directions yesterday, they packed up their belongings and their pets and they left. Their neighbors were on the phone when he saw the flames coming his way, so he hung up that phone and left. Just told him we got fire coming into our backyard and i got do. Now i think well leave. Todd and carrie mays say thers worst part of leaving is not knowing whether they will see it again. Its a scary reminder of the devastation caused by the valley fire last year. People are getting the latest on this fire, how its affecting their homes and businesses. So many people showed up at the meeting, they had to move it outside. Emotions are still incredibly raw from the valley fire, which with why we are ensuring that we are also ordering a significant number of Mental Health professionals to come into the county. As you all know, we are continuing to recover from the third worst fire, and this is the last thing we needed to see in the county of lake. Now about a thousand firefighters and six air tankers are fighting the flames. And several Evacuation Centers are set up in lake county. They are located at kelseyville high school, twin pine casino in middletown, and the Seventh Day Adventist church. The Clearlake Highland Senior Center is no longer being used as an evac center. They had a power outage there. I just feel probably like a lot of our viewers right now, just overcome with emotion. Its so hard to see this. This is right after, i mean, a year later. The valley fire, there was a case study done on that because the wind erupted. Right. This was about a sunday i think it was a sunday. I think there was a 50mileper hour gusty that erupted. You heard what they said yesterday. Something similar happened again. All of a sudden they get this rush of wind. I am sure there will be another discussion why this developed, because its calm right now. Right. Its hard to predict. I think the hot temperatures will have some effect on the wind picking up later today. Things are calm now. So much fog has moved into the bay area. It doesnt really it doesnt make it to lake county. This time of year that , kind of a pattern, some good news for the firefighters up there. The humidity seems to be a little higher right now. You know that will go down. Also the temperatures may not be as hot, but they are still going to be pretty hot. There is a ton of fog here. I mean, there is a system that clipped the northern part of the state. Maybe some relief. Not the 101s, 102s. More like the 95s. Thats still hot. Looking at Weather Underground from lower lake and lake county, 67 degrees. 57 humidity. I have seen from 26 humidity to 775 . So its tough to get a specific site. It will income the 90s. The key will be the wind. I think it stays calm for a while. It will pick up a little later. Temperatures will cool off. Whats interesting is most of the temperatures today will be pretty close to where they should be this time of year, except by the coast, which is running cooler, and a little bit around the bay. Livermore down to 89 from yesterdays 96. San jose from 85 to 80. Mark is out in pleasant hill. Says good morning, steve. We have a cloud cover at pleasant hill. Hopefully signs of a cooler day . They may get a quick warmup for tuesday, wednesday, then it will cool down. Because the wind looks like it might go easterly, which is what they dont want. They dont want. Up next we will talk live with calfire about the really tough conditions firefighters are facing as they try to get a handle on the devastating clayton fire. Good morning. We begin with big flames, major devastation in lake county as that fastmoving wildfire continues to burn. More than 100 homes have been destroyed. Many more are still threatened. Coming up in just a few minutes we are going to talk with a calfire official about the very latest on the conditions and the firefighting efforts. Good morning. I am pam cook in for Gasia Mikaelian for this hour. And good morning. I am dave clark. Lets talk about weather as you get your day started. Steve paulson right over there busy in his office. The similarity is that the rush of wind very similar to what they had in the valley fire. Its calm now. Thats the good news. The wind will probably pick up later. Humidity seems to be a teeny bit higher. Again the fog is not a factor that far inland, that far north. It is for everyone else though. There is plenty to go around. Too many fires. It was too hot yesterday. Some low 100s for some. Upper 90s. It looks cooler for many today. It will still be warm. Lowtomid 90s. Keep an eye on the humidity and the wind direction. We will take a westerly breeze. Dont want that east or southeast. Thats the factor they are deal with there. Fog is going to make for a cooler pattern along with a much more robust breeze here. Some locations are down 10 degrees. Fairfield down 11 from 24 hours ago. So thats a big signature of cooling. One little low there. Another one on the way there. Today its all about the fog and low clouds and cooler temps. Cant really cool off much more by the coast. They have been stuck in the 60s, 70s around the bay. More 80s than 90s in the interior. We have slow traffic in many areas this morning. We have had traffic doing pretty okay, i guess. Its backed up at the bay bridge as it normally is. This is a look at once you make it onto the span. We dont have anything major there. We have some slow traffic, obviously, waiting for the bridge to or waiting to get onto the bridge. Lets move to the san mateo bridge. Westbound 92 traffic is going to be a little bit busy getting out to the highrise. And so is the dumbarton bridge. Lets talk about the Silicon Valley commute. Northbound 101 and 280 and 85 are getting busier, and there is a lot of slow traffic on northbound 101. Sunnyvale to Mountain View 237s a mess getting to 101. 85 and 280 getting into the west valley are just moderate. 7 32. Back to the desk. Now lets go back to lake county where firefighters are trying to get a handle on that clayton fire. Hours ago we found out live here on mornings on 2 more than 100 homes were destroyed in the fire. The flames moved into lower lake. It started saturday night off highway 29 in Clayton Creek road. 3,000 acres have burned. It is only 5 contained. Thousands have evacuated. Right now people are staying in several shelters. Calfire says strong winds helped to fuel the fire, but this morning the winds have been pretty calm. About a thousand firefighters and six air tankers are fighting the flames. The cause of it are still under investigation. And st. Helena hospital in Clayton County has been evacuated also because of the fire. Hospital patients were moved to Sutter Lakeside Hospital in lake port. Ambulances from around the county were called in to help move them. St. Helena hospital will be closed until further notice. And several schools in lake county also closed, including lower lake high school, lower lake elementary, konocti education center, burns valley elementary, and eastlake elementary. Well, we want to get to the latest on the firefighting efforts now. Joining us as a spokesperson, calfire, daniel, thank you so much for joining us. I know you were hoping to get maybe an update on how many homes are threatened at this point and the current firefighting conditions. Yeah. As you reported earlier, we do know that over 100 homes and other structures were destroyed by the fire yesterday afternoon. We have a Damage Assessment team that is on the groundworking to determine the exact number that we are were damaged and destroyed. We know this fire was able to be a very destructive fire as it changed directions unexpectedly in the afternoon, burning into lower lake. Major destruction to that community. We dont have an exact number yet, but we know its well over 100. Daniel, have you heard anything about injuries . We havent talked much about that. You know, the lake county sheriffs department, the Clearlake Police department, chp worked very hard yesterday afternoon just to evacuate residents out of their homes as quickly as possible. At this point there has been nothing reported, but that is something that they will continue to assess. Obviously, when you have a large number of people evacuating on small streets in a small amount of time, there is always the risk for injuries and, heaven forbid, fatalities. Thats why we stress so much when a wildfire is burning in your area, you have to evacuate early. Dont wait for the sheriff to ask you to leave. If you are in the path of a fire, leave early. It not only helps you out and keeps you safe, but allows the firefighters better access to get into the roads to attack the fire. I know the sensible space is such an important part of all of this. You said earlier to us that there were a number of controlled burns because we have had a fiveyear drought. A lot of dry conditions. Has that been part of the problem . Maybe not enough clearing near these homes . You know, Defensible Space is an annual task. You have to remove the dead vegetation. With the rain this winter and spring, there was a lot more grass around the homes across the state. Those homes that created that Defensible Space, that allows the firefighters to get in there. If the home is covered in vegetation and pine needles and leaves covering the roofs, its difficult to attack a fire and make a stand. Defensible space helping out. One of the struggles is many homes that are older, build in the 60s, 70s, they are more able to catch on fire. When you get embers raining down on a home, its difficult to stop a fire because it has so much fuel for it to burn. Thats a good point to make. Thank you so much, daniel burlant. We will continue to update this story and check in with you. [ technical difficulty ]. West of where the valley fire hit a year ago. You remember it. The valley fire started about 1 p. M. September 12th. Within five and a half hours it had burned more than 10,000 acres. The next day it had reached more than 50,000 acres. Burned through cobb, middletown, whispering pines, and parts of Hidden Valley lake. In total, that fire spread to more than 76,000 acres. Four people were killed. Nearly 2,000 buildings were destroyed. Calfire says it was the third worst fire in california history based on the number of structures it burned. Last week calfire said that bad wiring on a hot tub started that fire. Well, with another big wildfire burning in lake county and the fire season really underway, calfire is asking everybody to make sure your home is prepared by clearing the way clearing away dry brush and trees. In lake county the fire moved so fast, homeowners werent able to do a lot. This morning we are asking you a question. Do you have an emergency plan in place . Is your home prepared, ready for a similar situation whether its clearing away brush or you packing up an emergency kit . Post a comment on our ktvu facebook page. By the way, you can also tweet us with the hashtag ktvu. Santa clara county Court Workers will be back on the job today after eight days on the picket lines. More than 300 clerks, janitors, and mediators walked off the job august 3rd. Yesterday the workers voted overwhelmingly to approve a new contract. It includes a pay raise. Court operations wont get back to normal though immediately because of the backlog of work that still needs to be completed. Well, the superior court issued a statement fog the workers approval yesterday saying, quote, we are pleased that a mutually agreeable resolution has been achieved. The court is eager to move Forward Together and welcomes the returning of employees tomorrow and the resuming of our regular operations. Now, coincidently, on the same day Court Employees are going back to work, a new 208 million courthouse is opening up in downtown san jose. The Family Justice Center consolidated several courts and many social agencies under one roof. The union had protested those, saying if there was enough money to pay for that construction, then the court could afford to give them an increase in pay. But the Court Officials say the state covered most of the building costs, and that consolidating the courts will actually save the county 30 million in the long run. Time is now 7 39. We have an accident at keller. We can put the accident up on the screen here. And traffic is going to be a mess coming out of san leandro. As a matter of fact, you can see that traffic is going to be busy as you come up to the 580 interchange. 880 is not much of an answer. It is very slow. Come people are avoiding the mccarther freeway and taking 880. That is jammed getting into downtown oakland. I want to mention 280 traffic is also going to be busy here. It looks good in downtown. But if you get up to highway 17, you will see traffic that is going to be getting slow. I want to go back to the maps, if i could, because westbound 24 is now a mess. There was an accident reported westbound 24 near the tunnel. A couple of viewers texted or tweeted about that. The traffic is going to be slow now in lorinda. Also slow in lafayette. So 24 so much slower than usual. If you take that to get into the oakland area, if you want to stay on a schedule, you need an extra 10 or 15 minutes. There is a live picture of lafayette. Sal, a big fog bank out there. In fact, most locations around the bay say cloudy including concord, livermore, san jose. Plenty of low clouds. Lifted a little bit. That cap which held it in check over the weekend allowed some inland temps to be in the hot category. 90s to 100s. Others just 60s and 70s. The fog is there. The fire conditions will probably be a little better today. Not as hot. But it will still be hot. I mean, lets face it. Chloe in clearlake, she is our source in lake county. 62 and smoky. Light winds out of the east. Bringing smoke from the clayton fire into the basin. There is a picture of it. Clayton fire smoke making air quality terrible for lake county today. The wind was calm. Now its eastsoutheast or north northeast. I have seen that at four locations. Its picking up 5 to 10. 70 degrees already. Going for 95 today. Maybe they will get a west southwest later. It does look easterly into the noon hour. Temperatures around here will cool down. San jose yesterday 85. Going 80 today. Palo alto to 79. 96 in livermore yesterday. 89 today. Santa rosa from 82 to 78. There is just too much fog. So clouds, fog. San francisco, i mean, very, very cool on the temps. 60s on the temps. Patchy fog. Another day where temperatures are going to be very cool. The fog getting help from a system to the north and also that delta breeze. 50s on the temps. The big news is how much cooler it is. 7 to 11 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. North bay temps are cool. Kelseyville 61. Calistoga 49. Thats a big difference. 41 truckee. Thunderstorms could pop up over the sierra on wednesday. They havent had anything since about june. So that may change here over the next couple of days. 41 truckee. One little system there right there, that little guy is coming this, and thats going to play into the weather most of the week. We get the low clouds, fog, and thats not going anywhere. 60s, 70s, 80s, to 90s all over the map here. Even some upper 50s, i think, by the coast. Inland temps will come down compared to over the weekend. They were pretty toasty for some. For others, its been a cold and foggy summer. It has been. Thank you. Time is 7 52. All right. A man took a monkey on a plane. Sounds like a joke, but its not. Airport police were waiting for him at the airport when the plane landed. There is the monkey. We will tell you why he says the whole thing was a big misunderstanding. Award winning interface. Award winning design. Award winning engine. The volvo xc90. The most awarded suv of the century. I am sircanalot, here to save you from another breakfast bore. Wake up those eggs with glorious spam see what spam can do. At spam. Com welcome back. New this morning, the man accused of shooting and killing a Georgia Police officer was just arrested in florida. 24yearold rahim deeds was arrested 3 00 this morning. He is accused of killing officer tim smith saturday night in eastman, georgia. Officer smith was responding to a report of a suspicious person. When he got out of his patrol car he came across deeds and was shot. Officer smith was a fiveyear veteran of the police force. Meantime, in new york, jfk airport was evacuated last night. There were reports of shots fired. Police rushed to the airport. Someone reported gunfire inside an airport terminal. Authorities evacuated terminals 1 and 8 as a precaution. Several flights were grounded. But this Morning Police say they have found no signs of guns, ammunition, shell casings, or any other evidence of gunfire there. An Airline Passenger who brought a small monkey on board a Frontier Airlines flight last week now says the whole thing was a big misunderstanding. Here is jason ellis. He was headed to vegas with his fouryearold monkey with him. The monkey named gizmo helps ellis cope with anxiety. Gizmo was tucked under his shirt. When a Flight Attendant saw the monkey and asked ellis about it, someone on the plane called the airport in las vegas saying that monkey was on the loose. That prompted Airport Police to meet ellis when the plane landed. Ellis says the reason the flight crew didnt know about gizmo, well, it was a misunderstanding. My flight was at 9 45. I showed up at 9 20. I rushed through there and it was a little lack of communication on my end, too. It was never smuggled on to the plane. He is in a handbag. Now, ellis eventually showed authorities he had paperwork allowing him to take gizmo on the plane. Frontier airlines is now apologizing for the inconvenience. They have even offered to refund ellis for that flight. All right. Now lets check in with mike. Dave, thank you. Students all across the state going back to class this week, and they will be learning something new. Its also controversial. Coming up, the new law now requiring students to be educated about sexual harassment. Plus, this morning we are getting a better idea of the damage that was done during a destructive fire that moved through the town of lower lake yesterday, and you can see some of what you have here around town. Hundreds of homes were destroyed by this fire. We will tell you what calfire is saying about the conditions they will be facing today coming up. This fire literally came through this town like a wave of water. Instead, it was a wave of fire that devastated a number of businesses, local homes, residents, and so forth. Firefighters battling the fastmoving wildfire burning through the town of lower lake. More than 100 homes have been destroyed and mandatory evacuations for thousands of people are underway. This is ktvu mornings on 2. And good morning everyone. Welcome back to mornings on 2. It is monday, august 15. I am mike mibach. Good morning. I am pam cook in for gasia today. We are getting new information on that fire in lake county. It has destroyed more than 100 homes now. It has forced thousands of people to evacuate. Right now it is still only 5 contained. Yeah. It started saturday night off highway 29 in Clayton Creek road. There is a map for you to get an indication of the location there. Alex savidge up there now in lake county this morning getting updates for us. Alex, what can you tell us now . Reporter well, good morning to you guys. You know, we could see the devastation behind us here in the downtown area of lower lake where we are this morning. Really we can just show you the pictures here and it sort of tells the story. This fire driven by strong winds swept right through the town and wiped out what a spokesperson says was likely hundreds of homes and businesses along the main corridor. We saw some of those businesses that burned, and right here you are looking right now at lake street. As you look down the street, we just did a drive down this street [ technical difficulty ]. Video of what the scene looked like. This fire was calm in the morning hours. But then the winds picked up late in the day, and this fire simply exploded in size, and it just swept right through the community of lower lake and caused so much destruction in this area. Thousands of people were evacuated to a number of nearby shelters. At last check there was no word on anyone being hurt in this fire. Of course, its still early on and crews are still assessing the damage and trying to make sure that everyone was able to make it out safely from this fire. Listen here to the update we got a short time ago from lawsuit doug pittman speaking on behalf of calfire. This is now going to be day three of this fire. Its important for people to know we still have an active fire here. It doesnt look as ferocious as what we dealt with yesterday afternoon, but the fire is here and all around us and beyond this community now. Reporter and at last check this fired burned about 3,000 acres and its still being called just 5 contained. So still a lot of active fire and what theyre saying is that the fire is gone through the town of lower lake and its heading north and east in the direction of clearlake. No Evacuation Orders issued just yet for the town of clearlake. Of course, that could be the case. That could happen at some point, and obviously calfire is going to keep an eye on the situation. Back out here live, here is one thing i wanted to show you guys. This is one of the buildings that was destroyed. You take a close look here at the plaque. I just got a look at it. It says this is the historic lower lake firehouse. Oh, gosh. Reporter you can see it right here. So this is just leveled by the fire. Just one of many buildings destroyed as this fire blew through this area yesterday. Its still actively burning. Calfire is going to try to get a sense of what the weather conditions will be like today and then they may be able to figure out exactly where this fire might be headed and if any more people need to be evacuated. Alex, this is so heartbreaking to see this. You said you just drove through that neighborhood and saw houses completely destroyed. You were talking about where the fire is headed now. Any indication of when people might be allowed back in to see whats left of their home . I think its far too early for that to Start Talking about letting people back into this area. Of course, in terms of our drive through here, you dont see a lot of people. But we did every so often run into one or two people who either somehow made their way back into this fire zone, or maybe never even left. Its really hard to say. But i dont think the Evacuation Order will be lifted for quite some time. There is a lot of hazards, obviously. Right. Reporter just look down here. You can see all up and down the street you have these power poles that were burned out and they come toppling down. Power lines in this area. Its obviously not a safe place to let people back into at this point. I remember covering the valley fire last year and driving down the roads there. One thing that stuck out to me is three, four homes destroyed, and then across the street one or two that werent touched at all. Do you get a sense in driving the roads thats a similar scene, or would you say that home after home after home after home has been destroyed in this clayton fire . Reporter no. It absolutely was a similar scene to the valley fire. I was there for that, too. And what you have here, i mean, for instance, here on the left side of the street you have a business here destroyed by the fire. You have a number of other homes that were leveled. Just the chimneys left. But there are just beyond that, you can see a home thats still standing. And thats because what essentially you had was a wind driven fire. This was a firestorm. You just had those embers blowing through this area. So sometimes its just a matter of where that ember lands. If it lands on your house, then your house is gone. If it doesnt land on your house, then your house is saved. So its just sort of a matter of pure chance in some cases which direction the winds are blowing and where those embers land. Right. And in other cases, alex, we got an update from calfire. He said just the age of the construction of the home. I mean, simply holder homes dont have that fireproof roof. Maybe people didnt have enough Defensible Space around. There are a lot of reasons. Oh, it is so heartbreaking to see that as they are dealing with this again. Reporter yeah. A lot of factors involved certainly. You know, i think in some cases you could have all the Defensible Space you wanted. But it sounds like the way this fire was behaving yesterday in terms of how erratic the winds were and how quickly it was just blowing through town, there is probably you could have all the Defensible Space in the world and your place might still be might still have been lost. Some fires you just cant stop. Alex savidge, thanks. Yeah, some people in lake county thought they were safe until the flames just surrounded their homes. As alex mentioned, very unpredictable at times. Todd and carrie mays stayed as long as they could. When the fire changed direction yesterday, they packed up their belongings and their pets and they left. Their neighbor was actually on the phone when he saw the flames coming his way. So he hung up the phone and left the area as well. I just told him, we got fire coming into our backyard and we got to go. Now i think well leave. Well, they say the worst part of having to leave their home is not knowing if they will ever see it again. As you could imagine this scary reminder for people in lake county, that fire in Valley County last year. So many people showed up to a meeting that it was it had to be moved outside. What i will tell you is that we are going to recover and lake county is going to come back strong. And we are going to have some tough days ahead. But what we know is when we work together, we are going to be stronger. About a thousand firefighters and six air tankers are working to fight this fire. We have a lot of fog here, as you can see, but it doesnt sound like the weather is helping the firefighters up in lake county. Lets check in with steve. Well, the fog stops about calistoga. Somewhere around there. Doesnt make it over the hill. It should be cooler today, but still its going to be in the 90s. Right in between the rocky fire and the valley fire, the clayton fire, it looked like the windy interrupted again similar to what happened in the valley fire. Just a huge rush of wind and all of a sudden now things are calm. Alex did not mention anything on the breeze. It is showing signs of being out of the eastnortheast, and i see it picking up in a few locations all around there. It does look like another very warm to hot day. Temperatures i think will be in the 90s. Cant get around that. In fact, i dont think there is going to be any break from that. We do get the low clouds and fog for us. There is a lot to go around. Fog and low clouds are going to cool off many inland locations. Its been up to 29 Miles Per Hour, the delta breeze here. 50s on some of the temps here. Low 50s for some. Concords minus 3. Fairfield and livermore are down 10 from 24 hours ago. Thats the big significant i mean, 57 antioch, 57 brentwood, cooler than 24 hours ago. Fog and low clouds will peel back slowly. 60s, 70s, more 80s. Down 10 degrees for some. Sal, what do you have in the Traffic Department . We have a terrible commute in the east bay, steve. We will start off with the maps. We had a crash on 580 near keller in oakland. Its been moved to the shoulder. The damage is done. The traffic is busy not only on 880, but 580 as well as you might imagine. People use 880. That is sold out. But even worse is highway 24. Highway 24, because of an earlier crash near the caldecott, is sold out. Look at all this slow traffic through lafayette getting through the area. And 680 is being affected. 680 is also very slow in the area. If this is your commute, if you drive from walnut creek to oakland today, boy, you will have an unpleasant commute. It is going to take you longer to get to work. I would add 20 minutes. I know in the morning, 20 minutes you might as well add hours, right . Its almost impossible. I think you need to add as much time as you can to build in, to wait this out or perhaps work from home in the morning if you have that flexibility. Lets go to the south bay. Silicon valley commute not too bad. Most of the slow traffic is on 101 getting into Mountain View and sunnyvale. At 8 11 back to the desk. Thank you, sal. Two men were killed. Another was hurt in a shooting outside a Birthday Party in oakland over the weekend. Police say they believe at least two people opened fire outside an art gallery. This is near 15th and harrison streets just before 1 00 yesterday morning. Investigators say an argument started inside the gallery, then spilled outside. The news website berkeley side reports one of the men killed was 22yearold terrence mack. He was a 2011 graduate of Berkeley High school. So far no arrests have been made. There are calls for calm in the streets in milwaukee following the Deadly Police shooting of a Young African american man. For a second night in a row there were violent protests in the city. One person was shot. There are reports that several Police Officers were injured. Reporter Caroline Shively there in milwaukee this morning where there is a lot of damage certainly and now the Wisconsin National guard has been called in. Reporter good morning to you, mike and pam. Yes, with daylight this morning came calm. When we arrived here about 1 30, there were a couple dozen Police Officers here. They were in their riot gear. They had their shields. Hours before that at the intersection where were standing an 18yearold was seriously shot. They brought in an Armored Vehicle just to get him to the hospital. This has been two nights of demonstrations following the Police Shooting of a young black man. Some protesters throw objects at police and at least one person is shot overnight. This round of chaos unfolding a day after Sylville Smith was killed by a Police Officer. Governor walker activating the National Guard to help deal with the unrest. Those individuals who train not only from a military standing pound, but they also have standing point, but they have Law Enforcement background. Reporter smith was killed while fleeing a traffic stop on wednesday, police say. They claim he was shot by a black officer who he refused to drop his gun. The individual was hit in the chest and hit in the arm. Reporter but those demonstrating say smith didnt have to die. We angry. The police, they are supposed to serve and protect us. Supposed to be here force us. But none of them could give us an apology. They looked at us like we was just a disgrace, some pigs, just some dogs. Reporter the mans father talking to the media saying he blames himself for his sons killing. I just got out of jail. I been going back and forth in jail. They see these things. I am apologizing to my kids. This is the role model they look up to. Reporter now, we are seeing cleanup. Folks are walking through, local people who live here, with garbage bags. This is the worst of the damage. This is the local gas station. On saturday night it was basically burned to the ground. Firefighters couldnt get in to help because there were too many bullets flying. The roof on the gas station collapsed. The cars parked nearby completely burned. Things got better last night. There were violent demonstrations. There was a shooting. Not as bad as we saw saturday night. Another thing we are looking for in the next few days is the possible release of the body cam video. The Police Officer was wearing that video. No word yet on when it will be released. Mike and pam, back to you. Hopefully with the National Guard things will be safer. Thank you. Back here in the bay area lets check in with sal. A rough commute out there for some folks, sal . Yeah. You know, in the east bay, pam and mike, not a good one. This is probably a combination of a lot of schools being back in and also a crash we had near the tunnel. Let me take a live look now for you at 24 heading away from walnut creek and over to oakland. It is improving a little bit. It was almost at a standstill a little while ago. Now its very crowded on the way to oakland. You should add an extra 10 or 15 minutes on top of your normal commute time to get through this area. I can also show it to you on some of these maps. You can see its all red coming through. But thats not the only east bay commute that is bad. As a matter of fact, 880 and 580 are competing for bad commutes. An earlier crash on 580 in oakland. A lot of people are on 880. 880 southbound from hayward to union city in freemont is moderate. Lets go to the san mateo bridge now. Can you see traffic is improving here. Might be an alternate to the bay bridge, which is backed up for a 25minute delay. 8 19. Lets get the weather with steve. Cooler looks to be the weather word. Coast and bay havent changed much a at a lahairis. Much at all. Temperatures going to warm up fast. They dont get help from the fog. The wind has turned easterly, northeasterly. It looks to be in the lowto mid 90s today. Maybe a westsouthwest breeze later today. But overall, except for a lot of smoke and haze, its going to be very warm and the breeze, which has tailed off, looks to be picking up a little bit. Plenty of fog and low clouds for us. I mean, its made a push today even out to concord. Livermore, which was not the case over the weekend. Some areas are running 10 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. Pretty good gusts towards travis. Also at altamont pass. Areas that were held in check over the weekend. So 50s on a lot of the terms or at 60 for some. Minus 8 for fairfield. Minus 9 for livermore compared to 24 hours ago. Mid 50s. Walnut creeks in there. Danville. Dublin in there. 59 antioch. Those are cooler than yesterday at this time. Fog and low clouds keep a gray pattern over by the coast. 60s, 70s there. Some 80s to near 90 degrees for some. Even up into clearlake it looks like lake county, mendocino county, ukiah hot. Vacaville. Not the 99s to 101s yesterday. It was smoking hot for some, especially out in contra costa, lake county and out to the valley. It looks cooler for everybody here. Might get a bump up on the inland temps the next couple of days. I dont think the coast and bay are going anywhere, pam and mike. All right. Thank you, steve. 8 21 is the time right now. A muni driver beaten on the job. Coming up, how she managed to keep her attacker from getting away. A muni driver says she was beaten on her route over the weekend. She was operate ago 20 stockton bus. She says she was called by muni dispatchers at 9 00 and told to return the bus for repairs. While moving the wires so she could change direction as car drove by and a man got out of that vehicle. She says that he put his hands on her and she defended herself by hitting him back. A witness took the mans keys so he could not get away. Police are investigating the incident. Police in menlo park are looking for two men they say robbed a trader joes. It happened saturday night at about 9 00 at the store on menlo avenue. Life is family mealtime and everything you need to make it picture perfect. Now be sure to tag your mother because she needs more followers. Ok. It is day three now of the clayton fire burning in lake county, and there is still no containment in sight. Good morning. Welcome back to mornings on 2. Its monday morning, august 15. I am pam cook. I am mike mibach. A thousand firefighters in lake county right now. [ technical difficulty ]. It started saturday night off of highway 29 in Clayton Creek road. So far 3,000 acres have burned. It is just 5 contained. Thousands of people have evacuated. Right now they are staying in several shelters. Calfire says strong winds helped fuel that fire yesterday, but the winds have since calmed down this morning. An hour ago a spokesperson for calfire told us that one of the biggest struggles firefighters are facing when it comes to saving homes. One of the things is many homes are older they are not built to the same standards today. They are more able to catch on fire, ignite. Newer homes built today are more ember resistant. So when you get embers raining down on a home, its very difficult to stop a fire because it has so much fuel for it to burn. No injuries have been reported, and the cause of that fire is still under investigation. St. Helena hospital in clearlake has also been evacuated as a precaution because of that fire. Hospital patients were moved in lake port. Ambulances from around the county were called in to help transport them and st. Helena hospital will now be closed until further notice. Several schools in lake county are also closed today. Lower lake high school, lower lake elementary, konocti education center, burns valley elementary and eastlake elementary. With another large fire burning in the lake county area, fire season well underway. Calfire now asking people, make sure your home is prepared by clearing away any dry brush and trees. That Defensible Space. Right. Some described that as a firestorm. But this morning we are asking you in. Yeah. Do you have an emergency plan in place . Is your home prepared for a similar situation whether its clearing away that brush or packing up an emergency kit, having the car fully gassed. Let us know by posting a comment on our ktvu facebook page. You can also tweet us with the hashtag ktvu. Always, you know, its such a sad, heartbreaking story. But if its a warning and preparation for the rest of us to maybe better, you know, be better prepared. A great point about the gas. I was putting gas in and i thought its a good idea to always have a half a tank. We are in earthquake country. If the power is out, you cant fill up your tank at a gas station. Checking in with steve paulson. Hopefully, they are getting some relief in lake county. You covered the valley fire . Yes. Remember they had a huge rush of wind which contributed to that. It looks like something similar happened here in the last 12 hours or so. All calm now. It appears as if that north northeast breeze is picking up a little bit. Thats not good. We would rather have a westerly breeze. The temperatures were hot yesterday. I expect them to warm to hot today. Not the 99s or 100s. The breeze is all over the place. Its gone northeast. Its gone northwest. Its back to the southeast. It looks like the fog will not help at all. Maybe a little bit cooler pattern. The fog pattern does look like there is your northeast breeze. Temperatures are going to warm up fast. Upper 80s and lower 90s. Again some of that wind direction looks to be northeast for a while. Then turning westsouthwest by this evening. That would help. That would probably keep the humidity up and temperature down a little bit. A lot of fog for us. It will be cooler. A much more pronounced delta breeze has really cranked up. So 50s more so than 60s on some of these temps. Peninsula temps low 60s for some. Pretty consistent atherton, menlo park. Upper 50s for some. 56 belmont. One little system there. A secondary one right here is going to come in and carve itself out and head towards southern california. That may give us an easterly breeze. We will check in on that for wednesday. It might also give the Sierra Nevada some thunderstorms. Something they havent seen since about june. 60s, 70s by the water. 80s today. All right. Sal, what do you have . I know east bay is brutal, right . Yeah, we have some brutal traffic there, steve. Youre right. 24 had a crash. Its gone. But we had a lot of slow traffic and more people are back to school and every week we have seen more people on the road. Its not great here in lafayette and also in lorinda as you drive to the tunnel. 680 traffic backed up from concord to walnut creek. Some of the other places in the east bay havent been quite as bad. 880 southbound isnt bad from hayward to fremont. 580 is improving. 580 slow from highway 13 to the lakeshore curve. 880 northbound is slow as well. The bay bridge is backed up to the maze. A 20minute delay. We have some slow traffic there. Lets go to the so to the south bay. 101 into Mountain View both directions slow. Back to the desk. All right. Things are returning to norma bit at the courthouses in the south bay this morning. An eightday strike is now over. It does mean Court Employees are headed back to work. Ktvus janine de la vega has been talking about this story. Youre talking about the deal that has been reached. Its going to take a little while to get completely back to normal . Reporter yeah, it will, pam. You know, the courthouse here, the main one, it just opened up about a half hour ago. Court proceedings are supposed to get underway in the next 30 minutes or so. You can see there is a line of people there waiting to get in. You can bet this is a sense of relief among employees as well as lawyers who are in and out of here as well as judges. Hundreds of workers are going to be stepping back inside here and the other courthouses today. Thats because its difficult to get much done within the Santa Clara Court system without the more than 300 workers who were on strike. They were court clerks, researchers, and janitors. They picketed for saturday days. Their big sticking point, they wanted a raise in the second year of the contract. After negotiations, a deal was finally reached. While the union was on Strike Services were limited at all the south bay courthouses because there were hardly any workers there. Instead, the managers were filling in. Many hearings were delayed or canceled. There has been a lot of frustration. Now there is a lot of work to catch up on and it will take several days to return back to normal. One thing that you need to get used to is the new Family Justice Center. That opens up today in downtown san jose. And the union had been protesting, saying if the court had money to build that, it should be able to pay for an increase in wages. But the court has maintained this whole time that the new building is funded by the state and has no direct relationship on employee wages. Back here at the main courthouse, again we will just have to see how things go today. I talked to an attorney who says that he had many hearings canceled. He is so relieved that things are relatively going to be back to normal today and he is happy that a deal was reached. I bet thats a sentiment that a lot of people are feeling today. Certainly. All right. Thank you, janine, for that update. Turning to the president ial race, both donald trump and Hillary Clinton are campaigning today in battleground states. Well, today is the start of a new school year for a lot of students in San Francisco, and going back to school certainly a reminder for us drivers to be careful on the roads. This morning we have seen drivers having to stop at these crosswalks behind us. This is monroe elementary in San Franciscos excelsior district. A big day for students. The first day of school. A lot of kids are going to be walking from point a to point b, and police are on hand to make sure kids are safe. They have been out here keeping a watchful eye on things. They are teaming up with the chp, muni, and San Francisco Health Department to remind drivers to slow down. Specialized officers are out on the streets conducting Traffic Enforcement. Making sure that motorists are looking for children. They are also going to be looking out for drivers who are speeding or not stopping for pedestrians, running red lights or stop signs or any other traffic violations. At a meeting last week a crossing guard told us a lot of times drivers are not aware of whats going on around them. The number one problem is parents, drivers are speeding. They are in a rush. They need to slow down. Reporter and acting police chief Toney Chaplin says that Traffic Enforcement is part of the Vision Zero Initiative to end traffic deaths in San Francisco by 2024. On average, 30 San Franciscoans lose their life each other in traffic accidents. These officers again will be stationed around schools. They are not saying specifically which schools because they dont want drivers exactly where they will be because they dont want them to act any different. They will be stationed at certain schools considered high traffic or high problem areas like this one at monroe. Of course, they will be doing this all week because all week is the start of the school year as people get acclimated to driving earlier and getting up earlier as the start of the school year begins.
