Steve is off, but we have rosemary today. Good morning to you. Good morning to you. We have a nice one coming our way. We are going to warm it up. This morning we are waking up with low clouds at the coastline as well as inside the bay. I dont want it to last very long for our bayside communities. Along the coast i think its going to stick most of the day. We will be mostly sunny elsewhere and temperatures are expected to soar above yesterdays highs. Here is a closer view where we have a little bit of that cloud cover from San Francisco across the bay bridge along Richmond San Rafael and our bridges over portions of the bay. San mateo, done done done dumbarton bring. Sonoma, napa, vallejo, through hercules and perhaps along the benicia stretch as well as martinez. Temperatures this morning not too bad. A little cool for some. We have 49 degrees in santa rosa. 48 in novato. Upper 50s in oakland. Redwood city at 53. I expect temperatures to climb and climb fast especially with the folks with the sunshine. As we get into the afternoon the clouds are expected to hold on the coast. Upper 80s to low 90s. When i come back i will have a detailed look at your afternoon highs. A big warmup in the extended forecast. More on that as well. Back to you. And sal is off today, but we are watching the roads for you this morning. These are live pictures of interstate 880 in oakland. It will be busy later. The warriors are playing tonight. That game starts at 6 00. But the roads are pretty clear right now. You can see for yourself. If any traffic problems pop up, dont worry. We will bring them to you right here on morning. On this memorial day the nation pauses to remember the men and women who died while serve in the u. S. Military. This is Arlington National cemetery. President obama is marking the day by laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. Some 5,000 people are expected to attend the ceremony. You see many people there already. At home if you are looking for a way to spend this memorial day there are many events happening in the bay area. Ktvus janine de la vega live in milpitas to talk about some of them. Reporter a lot of people use this day to barbecue. But if you would like to spend time to pay tribute, there is ceremonies. There is one at milpitas city hall. They have a memorial here with different, you know, honoring different people who served and died in wars. World war i, world war ii, korea, vietnam. So there is going to be a ceremony here in a couple of hours. There is also going to be another service at Oak Hill Cemetery in san jose. Let me tell you about Something Different that pays tribute to veterans. Its the wings of freedom tour taking place in livermore. There is going to be fully restored planes from world war ii on display including a b17 flying for the rest, a p57 mustang. Visitors can tour these planes, learn about their importance in the war. Some world war ii veterans are still with us. We did speak with a local veteran who served in the third infantry division. Heres what he had to say. I respect these bombers. Yeah. They really helped us out in a lot of places. If it wasnt for them. We couldnt advance. Reporter the National World War Ii Museum estimates more than 550 world war ii vets die each day. The museum estimates there will only be a handful by the 75th anniversary of dday in 2019. Some may actually be at todays event in livermore. The planes will be on display until 5 a. M. Admission is 12 for adults, 6 for kids under 12. You can even take a ride on some of those historic planes if you are willing to shell out some money. Its 400 to 450 for 30 minutes in the air. A unique experience if you want to do that since today is the last day to do that. Gasia. Janine, the event is age appropriate for the little ones who are too young to understand the more somber events happening around the bay area. It might be a good way to introduce them to this is what grandma or grandpa did in. Reporter definitely something for families where little kids love standing back and saying wow, you know, and really looking at these historic planes. It should be you know rather, as you mentioned, a somber ceremony that pays respect, but this is another which to do that on had memorial day. Thank you. 7 06. Ever year the San Francisco National Cemetery in the presidio holds the largest Memorial Day Ceremony in the bay area. The presidio is a National Historic landmark. More than 35,000 veterans and their dependents are buried there. Over 35,000 graves here at the presidio National Cemetery. Reporter a walk through is almost like a walk through a history book. Its a monument to all of the different layers of history that presidio itself has because it is probably the oldest army base on the west coast. In many ways, it was like the west coast pentagon because orders that came from the War Department in washington, d. C. Was sent to the presidio. We have people here from almost every era of the conflicts that the United States have been engaged in. John blackjack pershing worked out of presidio. General mark clark was a commander here. So every era of the u. S. Conflicts from the indian war, spanish american war, world war i, world war ii, iraq, afghanistan, people are buried from all these conflicts that the u. S. Were engaged in. Reporter and park rangers say recent conflicts have made people look at both memorial day and the presidio a little differently. Especially since the days of 9 11 and the new engagement overseas in the middle east and other areas like that, that has become more timely, i think, to people in the bay area and across the country that memorial days around the country are taking on a new significance. Sometimes there is a question about the engagement of the United States in wars overseas and people are honoring people who stepped forward and do sacrifice and lose their lives for their country. Every year there seems to be a larger turnout here at memorial day. Reporter do you think its reverence . Do you think its understand . Do you think its respect . Its probably a combination of respect, remembrance. You bring them back into life. You bring them back to your living existence and, therefore, they do not die. Reporter while Million Dollars is always marked with a large ceremony, rangers say visitors come every day. Sometimes searching for people they know, but often they come to learn about the people who have come before. There is also an electronic grave locater at the entrance. So if you know the persons last name, you can look up a relative or look up someone like Frederick Funston or thompkins, the famous buffalo soldier, buried here. There are many more memorial day ceremonies through the bay. The full list is on ktvu. Com. In San Jose Police investigating several violent incidents. With the sounds of the Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally echoing in d. C. , donald trump is here. He talked about the treatment of veterans and gun rights. We are going to protect our Second Amendment every little inch. Reporter trump has a Campaign Strategy now that focuses on about 15 states. Likely some of these, including california, which hasnt voted for a republican in nearly 30 years. Donald trump is not gonna win california and new york. If you does, its a 49 state blowout. He is right to focus on michigan, illinois, wisconsin, pennsylvania, and ohio. Reporter and a potential complication. The libertarian party, they had a convention this weekend eventually nominating former new mexico gary johnson for president and former Massachusetts Governor bill weld for vp. At a time when the likely republican and democratic nominees with significant negatives, this could be an opportunity for a third party to pull from both sides. If we get the democratic nomination, donald trump is toast. [cheers and applause]. Reporter clinton though has taken some time off the campaign trail. She will return tomorrow with a series of fundraisers and Campaign Appearances in new jersey. Why new jersey . Well, when you talk about the soldiers at the San Francisco National Cemetery, you cant forget about the 400 Buffalo Soldiers buried there. As ktvu fox 2s Claudine Wong will show us, this year marks the 150th anniversary of the formation of the Buffalo Soldiers. Reporter you have been studying Buffalo Soldiers literally your entire life . Pretty much. Reporter 50 years. 50 years. Reporter tell us about them. They were africanamericans who enlisted in the United States regular army after the civil war. I must tell you black soldiers have fought for this country starting back in the revolution and even during colonial times, you know. They fought in the colonies. In 1866, they became a part of the regular establishment. One in five soldiers in the regular army, after 1866, was black. 85 of the battles fought against native americans did not include john wayne riding to the rescue. It included africanamerican soldiers. They got the name buffalo soldier not because of the woolly hair and the buffalo robe they war and the mat of the buffalo. They got it because of the native americans they fought. They were likened to the klan of the buffalo warrior. And my grandfathers they were the fiercest warriors in the klan. My grandfathers generation accepted this. Reporter Anthony Powell is a historian inspired by his grandfather to study the history of the Buffalo Soldiers. His grandfather was an army man who signed up in 1887. My grandfather, his name was Samuel Nathaniel waller. When i was 13, 14 thinking i knew everything in the world, i asked my grandfather one day why he joined this racist countrys army. And the thing that he told me was something i would never forget. He said the army gave me the only part of the American Dream that america the nation would let me share in. Many black soldiers of his period and even today, they used the military as a vehicle for a way up and a way out. The tombstone here is of william h. Thompkins. The congressional of honor recipient. He was with the 10th calvary. He served with the 9th calvary 23rd and 24th infantry like may grandfather. The tombstone here another black soldier john a. Logan. He was Sergeant Major of the 9th cal rather i calvary. Reporter do you think that americans know the story . The 400 soldiers buried here, some were civil war veterans. And if you go to the tombstone, you will see james reeves usct. United states color troops. One of the things that happened as the west disappeared, we abandoned military fortresses. Each time we do is that, we take the people out of the grave and bring them to the nearest cemetery. And so you have 400 soldiers here pretty much because of that. Reporter but 150 years after the formation of the Buffalo Soldiers, he says their story, just like his grandfathers, is one that needs to be told. My grandfather was passing on a legacy of pride that i had nothing to be ashamed of. And so when you look at the tombstones or you watch a movie of these soldiers, it reflects that pride of who they were. Not just as americans, but as men. And so its a story that i think the nation needs to honor. Buffalo soldiers were fascinating. That was Claudine Wong reporting. There are many more bay area memorial ceremonies today.
