One person died in this crash. The coroner is on the way. They have evidence tow trucks to preserve some of this evidence here. You can see the video. Now, we have one of our reporters on the scene gathering more details and we will try to find out from chp how this collision occurred. In fact, these are live pictures. You can see these vehicles completely burned out. This looks terrible. Again, one person did die. I do believe that i do see the Alameda County coroner unit on the scene. Westbound 580, this is going to ab collision that is going to take time to clear up. There is the big rig over there involved as well. We are going to stay here and get more information. We will have a live report from the scene coming up. But avoid the area. Lets put the map up real quick. Even though these are great pictures, i want to tell drivers more about the alternates. The simple answer is, there are no good alternates, because dublin boulevard is very, very slow. That is moving worse than the freeway. The only thing i can think of is if you go well out of your way avoid anything west. If perhaps you go out of livermore or south or city streets. But its not going to be quick getting out of this area. Lets talk about a couple of other traffic all right. Janine is there. Can we go back to you, please . This scene looks horrible. Reporter yeah, we just pulled up. I was speaking to one of the chp officers here on the scene. He is telling me that it was six cars that were involved, including the big rig. We dont know which car the person who died was in. I am assuming it could be these the one of the cars that is burned here. I am told three cars caught on fire, and it likes they have people here on the side of westbound 580 that were involved in this accident. I tried to find out, has anybody else been transported to the hospital, and at this point we just dont know since we just arrived here. There are just two lanes of westbound 580. This is near the hop yard exit and hacienda exit. So right now they are allowing people to use the carpool lanes since right now only two lanes are open. And traffic is just very backed up. They are showing video of one of the vehicles on fire. That surely caused such a slowdown here. Firefighters are still on scene. Still a lot of emergency personnel. The chp is trying to sort this out. All we know is it happened around 6 00 this morning and it was a big rig that somehow collided with one of the vehicles and then there was a pileup. So we are still trying to get a little bit more information, but right now if there is anything that you can do to avoid traveling westbound 580. This is going to be a big effect on those people who are commute be from the Central Mountain coming from the stockton area, as well as people who live in the tri valley area. We were trying to get here on the surface streets, and even the surrounding surface streets were getting jammed because people were trying to take shortcuts. So just expect it to be a slow one if you are coming to this area. Janine de la vega is live on the scene looking at this horrible wreckage. I dont think there is a way that they can open these lanes in the next hour. I dont see it happening. I think that we are done with this commute. I really want to suggest strongly that you not drive through there. Of course, we will stay on top of it. We will take a look at some of the other commutes, which are pretty normal starting off with the bay bridge. I think a lot of people want to see this. Its a 20minute delay. No major problems getting through. And if you are driving this morning on the valley commute, 237 also looking typical, which means slow traffic getting in. At 7 05 lets go to steve. Sal, thank you. We have an upper low dropping in. Its already producing moderate to heavy rain north of us. Mendocino county towards crescent city, eureka. We have mostly clear skies earlier. Now we are partly to mostly cloudy. Pretty good breeze behind this system. Its also bringing in cooler air. I do believe showers and scattered showers and thundershowers are in the mix here. They canceled classes after the faculty announced its holding a oneday strike. Allie rasmus at one of the nine city college campuses. You just spoke with one of the strike organizers . Reporter yes. We spoke with the Union President here. He says the bottom line, teachers and faculty members here at San Francisco city college need a raise. He says that teachers, librarians and counselors are making less now than in 2007. The School Administration says there are limits to what they can offer the teachers because student enrollment has dropped by about 9,000 fulltime students over the past few years. Why did enrollment drop . Back in 2013, the school was this danger of losing its accreditation because of financial problems. The schools accreditation is up for review next february. The fackfy agreed to pay cuts. They are upset their has not gone up since then. They are concerned about the schools plan to reduce class offering by 26 . Its also an issue of job security as well. We talked to the Union President. Heres what he had to say. It comes down to the college is at a crossroads. It needs to rethink how it is going to meet the needs of the community and students by coming up with plans to grow the college back in a way that makes sense, and part of that plan is to making sure that faculty are paid enough money to live here in the bay area. Reporter now, city College Chancellor susan lamb wrote an editorial in the San Francisco chronicle this weekend. She says, quote, the reality we face is that if we do not align our schedule to match our enrollment, we will not be able to pay our bills. It is simple math. The Union President disputes that claim. He says the claim. He says the college has a reserve fund. The estimates are 20 to 60 million. He stays money could easily be used to give the teachers a raise. Their first raise in almost ten years. Now, the picket lines for this oneday strike were supposed to start forming at 6 30 this morning. The union explained because classes are canceled, there are no students coming to class at 7 a. Now says the two other republicans, they should drop out. On the democratic side, Hillary Clinton won four states. While she is not calling for senator Bernie Sanders to drop out, her focus, it is shifting to november. Lets win the nomination and in july lets return as a unified party. Thank you all so much. Senator Bernie Sanders only won one state last night, that was rhode island. He says he will keep campaigning all the way to the convention. John kasich has a hurdle in the oregon primary. His photo and bioare missing from an official voter pamphlet. That was mailed last week to about two million households. Oregon secretary of state says they sent kasich a letter in january asking for the information for the pamphlet, but says the campaign did not respond. Kasich is listed on a small section showing all the candidates for every office, but he has an asterisk next to his name saying, the candidate chose not to submit a voters pamphlet statement. Tensions between Trump Supporters and opponents are boiling over here in california. Someone sprayed pepper spray at a group of Trump Supporters yesterday. Five people were hit, including two girls. No one has serious injuries. The demonstrations happened as at city council was considering a resolution over issues such as immigration. The Council Voted late last night 32 to table the resolution. San franciscobased lyft is facing a wrongful death and personal injury lawsuit. Its filed by the mother and boyfriend of man who died in a car crash with a lyft driver at the wheel. Shane hol hand land Brady Lawrence called liches for a ride home for a Halloween Party in 2014. The report on the crash said the driver swerved to avoid a stalled car. That report says roads were wet. The driver lost control while going 75 miles an hour and slammed into a tree. Holland died. Lawrence was hospitalized for serious injuries. He said at first lyft was helpful. They were offering to help me any way they could. I sent them a few bills and they stopped. They never called me or sent me an email or letter or anything to express any kind of condolences. Lyft issued a statement saying our hearts go out to the families and loved ones involved in the tragedy but they say the driver was an independent contractor. Not a lyft employee. Lyft says it is a tech company. Not a transportation company. There is a hearing scheduled in the case next month, but no trial date has been set. 7 12. And there are reports a message was written next to the bodies. They were found shot to death sunday in their evergreen neighborhood. The mercury news reports family members found a message that read, sorry, my first kill was clumsy. The couple had two sons. Police say they have talked to the 17yearold son but havent been able to contact another son, who is in his early 20s. Police say he may have information and they do want to talk to him. Investigators say whoever is responsible for the killings is familiar with the family. The trial of an oakland man accused in the killing of an 8 yearold girl and another man is nearing an end. This week testimony finished with the defendant, darnell williams, sister taking the witness stand. She testified that she drove her brother to the dice game where a 22yearold man was shot and killed. She said her 7yearold son saw the shooting and was hit by the fragment of a bullet. She admitted she told her son not to mention anything he saw to police. In a separate incident, williams is also accused of firing shots through the home in retaliation for a gang killing. Closing arguments in this case start next week. Sometime 7 16. The results are in for the nations report card. It is showing that most High School Seniors are not ready for college. This report says only about a third of them are ready and prepared for entrylevel college math and reading courses. It also says seniors are slipping in math and they are not making any gains in reading. Also, math scores went down for the first time in ten years. There is often abrupt slowdowns. I am just saying. We dont know what caused this crash, but we know it happened right before the dublin interchange. Its a deadly crash and several cars are piled up. Its happened to me driving up there. All of a sudden there is an abrupt slowdown and i have almost been in a wreck myself. Its kind of the way that thing is. This morning a deadly crash. Three lanes are blocked. This is right next to some of those Car Dealerships there that you see approaching the dublin interchange. There is one of the Car Dealerships there that you can tell. Just to give you a Reference Point here. So 580 is going to be backed up. In fact, on my maps where i can see the slowdown, its backed up well into livermore. He gets 20 minutes. New this morning, a fremont homeless shelter was evacuated after reports of a fire at 4 00 this morning at Sunrise Village on brown road. Fire crews responded and handled the situation which they called a minor incident. At this point no reports of anyone being hurt. People were allowed to go back inside the building before 5 00. Police in fairfield have searched for answers in the case of a missing boy for 30 years. Recently, police said they had a suspect in the disappearance of clark honda. Ktvus brian flores in our newsroom now with reaction from the family and the community about all of this. Brian. Reporter dave, at the time it definitely shook the community of fairfield. No doubt the boys family as well. Yesterday the police announced a man serving in jail is the person allegedly responsible for the kidnapping and killing of the boy known to his family and friends as toshie. Still in explanation why this particular boy was the target in the first place. Reporter that was our headline on our newscast in 1984. At the time clark honda was living with his mother. It was on august 22, 1984, when he went missing. The window to the home was open and there was a ransom note inside. Years went by. The father and mother divorced. They held out hope that clark was still alive. Even recreating what he might look like years later. Police announced that a family friend, already serving time for child molestation charges, is the man responsible for killing and kidnapping clark toshera honda. I remember seeing the news reports. I wasnt working for the Police Department at the time. It was a big deal then and its a big deal now. Paradoxical that i could forgive him. For my familys sake that they see that justice done. Reporter Police Worked with the d. A. s office and fbi working on gathering new evidence. Farajang is serving a 26 year sense for previous cases. The d. A. s office is working on moving him from a prison in chowchilla. We spoke with police. They didnt disclose any new evidence that led them to him. We are learning about the specific raysist and homophobic Text Messages from the San Francisco Police Department. They were uncovered into officer jason lot. He is accused of misusing Police Department and dmv data bases. Investigators say he used derogatory terms to describe minorities, including a latino and africanamericans and native americans. The public defender says the hateful texts could affect 200 of his cases, three of which were murder cases he helped investigate. It shows a person who very casually makes racist and derogatory comments, talks about injury to the citizens that he is supposed to be serving. Police chief greg suhr says two other officers accused in this latest texting scandal are no longer with the department either. The first texting case involved 14 Police Officers. Many of them kept their jobs because the city waited too throng discipline them. Your sixmonthold emails are abandoned property, but that could soon change. There is another investigation at the Santa Clara County jail looking into another inmate death. The Sheriffs Department says a 36yearold man arrested on an outstanding warrant had several preexisting medical problems and had a medical emergency in the jails infirmary. That inmate was rushed to Valley Medical Center where he died. Now, at least eight inmates have died in custody at the jail since last year. Releasing information on those deaths is one of the reforms put in place after the death of michael tyree. A mentally ill inmate who was beaten to death last year. Three guards now face criminal charges. Federal drug Officials Say bay area hospitals have treated several people who took a what they thought was a painkiller. The Drug Enforcement agency says the patients bought on the street what they thought was norco but the dea says it contained fentanyl, which is a powerful opiod. They complained of trouble breathing and vomiting. They all survived. There have been 52 cases of new york owe poisoning in the sacramento area in the last few months. Lets go to sal. The traffic is terrible on 580. It is solid coming out from the livermore area. You want to give yourself plenty of extra time. Only a couple of lanes are getting through. Its going to be that way for a while. As we look at other parts of the bay, southbound 880 slow traffic through hayward. Getting down the fremont its more like a normal commute here. Dumbarton bridge slow across. And in the south bay, there are some things. Northbound 101 is very slow. Solid line from the capitol expressway to mountain view. 85 and 280 are also very slow. Reporter doctors say the numbers are a little better than they were 10 to 15 years ago for preschoolers, but for kids age 15 519, the number those overweight is steadily rising. Even more concerning is that the trend is even worse for the most severely obese children, or those with a body mass index or bmi of more than 40. That group increased from less than 1 of children in 1999 to nearly 2. 5 by 2014. Despite the fact that there are healthier food options for kids at school and more awareness of Healthy Eating at home, doctors say the numbers show more needs to be done. Doctors at Duke University did the most recent study of kids in obesity and they recommend more coordination between doctors and the healthcare system. As in older adults, they point out often times Health Insurance pays for treatment of things like diabetes, but doesnt cover preventative care, such as nutrition classes and memberships to a local gym or activity center. That is something they would like to see. Some of the other things this particular research did not mention, but gasia and dave, we have talked about it a lot, more kids from 1999 to now, they are looking at screens. They have phones, ipads, and they are sitting inside rather than actively playing and being more active and an active lifestyle. That certainly could be a part of it. Right. A fiery crash killed one person on westbound 580 near the dublin grade. Traffic is backed up all the way before you get to livermore. Our janine de la vega begins our Team Coverage like at the scene. Reporter gasia, we are hearing that the traffic might be backed up to tracy. I want to show you what it looks like right now. In the last few minutes, firefighters, they extricated the body that was in one of the burnt cars. It was an acura. I know its hard to tell that it even looks like a vehicle. Those are two vehicles there that caught fire. One person was trapped. There is still fire engines here on scene and an ambulance. Emergency personnel. They were able to toe away one of the tow away one of the cars. This accident involved six vehicles. I am joined now by chp officer tyler hahn. Tell me, how did this all happen . Unfortunately, a big rig collided with the back of a bmw. I told you an acura earlier. I was wrong. It was a bmw that was the first impact. Thats where, unfortunately, the person died. That bmw was pushed into another vehicle, which was pushed into another vehicle, and as you can see it just major damage. At this time just one fatality. There was approximately six to eight other people involved. Their injuries are just minor. Just complaining of pain. We are in the process of getting the scene cleared. We will be taking tons of measurements. Reporter and at this point, i know we do have video, because of of the three cars that caught on fire. That one person i know was trapped. But you were telling me about the big rig driver. He didnt brake . It appears that there is no braking application. There is no skid marks on the highway. At this point the driver said that traffic was coming to a stop ahead and for an unknown reason he was not able to apply the brakes. We dont know why at this point. Reporter okay. And tell me about this traffic situation. We do want to show it. So i am going to have keith, my photographer here, show a little bit of maybe what this backup looks like. Youre looking at westbound 580. And it is very slow. Just two lanes open. Talk to me about, you know, you were telling me maybe tracy . Its backed up to people in the Central Valley . Thats what im hearing, yes. At this time two lanes are open. We should have another lane open shortly. At this time try to avoid this area. Its backed up probably to tracy. Reporter now that the coroner is taking away the body, does that mean we still have to get the freeway cleaned up . Tell me about the time estimate. I would imagine we will be here for another hour or two. We will be cleaning up the scene. After that we want to take a lot of measurements to make sure that we diagram the scene. Thats for the investigation. Make sure that scene is diagrammed with all the evidence thats left. The other people, the six to eight people, they werent transported. They had very minor injuries. As far as the person who is deceased, we dont know if it was a man or a woman. Well, we are looking at a map here, janine, and the traffic is not quite backed up to tracy, but its very slow. Its the kind of slow traffic that is not moving. So its not maybe its an eight to ten mile backup, but so it could be worse length wise. But this traffic is very, very slow. Its going to take you a while to get through that. Some people are using highway 84 to get out of the area. I guess its a decent call. Its not great because a lot of people are using it. And i would not recommend using dublin boulevard. Its just at this point, its just terrible. So thats what you need to deal with. I am going to move the maps here to some of i am going to show you some of the other stuff thats going on around the bay. This is a look at the bay bridge. We have a big backup here. San mateo and dumbarton bridge delays are not that bad. This is highway 24 westbound as you drive through. It is moderately heavy. We were talking about some of the other commutes around the bay area. I dont want to forget you in the south bay. If you are a silicone valley commuter, we dont have a lot of crashes. They canceled classes after the faculty announced they are holding a oneday strike. Ktvus allie rasmus live at one of the nine campuses. Picket lines are forming . Reporter yes, you can see it behind us. The teachers and faculty members started gathering about 15 minutes ago. This is an ongoing labor dispute. Their contract negotiations with city College Administrators are at an impasse. They have been working without a contract for a year. It comes down to salary and money. You can hear it in some of the chants. There have been a few people honking their horns in support. They have their signs out here. The union says San Francisco city college counselors, instructors and librarians have not made any more money now than in 2007. Their salaries are less than they were ten years ago. Administrators say there are limits to what they can agree to because student enrollment at the school has dropped significantly in the past few years by 9,000 fulltime students. Why did enrollment drop . Because four years the school was in danger of losing accreditation from the state because of financial accountability issues, problems with internal governance and student sonses. During that crisis, the faculty agreed to pay cuts. What they are asking for now is to have those pay cuts restored and have a 4 raise for the next three years. Teachers say that would put their salaries on par with teachers at other Community Colleges make. We have been asking for consistence with what other bay area colleges have had in the past in the last several years. So we are now behind. We are the last in the bay area in terms of salaries. And we live in the most expensive area in the bay area, or actually probably one of the most expensive in the United States of america. Reporter now, city College Administrators say because of the enrollment problem they face a budget deficit next year. They are willing to give them a 7 purple rain raise over two years, but no more than that. Teachers say they would only be making 1 more than they did 10 years ago. We asked to speak with the City College San francisco chancellor susan lamb this morning to talk to her directly about labor dispute. Hopefully, we will have an update coming up in the 9 00 hour. But in the meantime, the picketers, teachers and faculty members, about 1,500 of them here. They are on the picket lines this morning for this oneday strike out here. Back to you guys. I believe most students got the message that classes were canceled. I havent had a chance to ask the students how they feel about this strike going on. San jose police say a double homicide over the weekend, it was not a random act of violence. There are reports a message was written next to the bodies. Now, goal am and shamima rabbi were found sunday. The mercury news reports family members found a message that read, sorry, my first kill was clumsy. The couple had two sons. Police tell us they have talked to their 17yearold son, but havent been able to reach another son in his early 20s. Police say he may have information and they do want to talk to him. Investigators say whoever killed them is familiar with the family. San francisco based lyft is facing a wrongful death and personal injury lawsuit. Its filed by the mother and the boyfriend of a man who died in a car crash with the lyft driver at that wheel. Shane holland and Brady Lawrence, they called lyft for a ride home from a Halloween Party in 2014. The chp report on the crash says the driver swerved to avoid a stalled car on a freeway east of sacramento. That report says roads were wet. The driver lost control while going 75 Miles Per Hour and slammed into a tree. Holland died. Lawrence was hospitalized for serious injuries. He says at first lyft was helpful. Originally, they said that they would they were offering to help in any way they can. I sent them a few bills and then they stopped. They have never called me or sent me an email or letter or anything to express any kind of condolences. Lyft issued a statement saying, our hearts go out to the family of loved ones involved in this tragedy, but it also says its not responsible because the driver was an independent contractor. Not a company employee. Lyft also says it is a tech company. Not a transportation company. Now, a hearing is scheduled in the case for next month, but no trial date has been set. Time is 8 12. Details are now being released about a lawsuit settlement between uber and its drivers. The classaction lawsuit covered uber drivers in california and massachusetts who said they were not independent contractors but uber employees. Up the settlement, uber agreed to pay the drivers as much as 100 million, but Court Documents show that most eligible drivers will probably get less than 25. It depends how many miles they drove and how many 450,000 drivers file to claim the money. We are learning more after more racist Text Messages emerge from the San Francisco Police Department. Get the latest on that horrible crash on 580. Yeah, it happened before 6 a. M. , dave and gasia. A multivehicle crash with a big rig and other cars. Six vehicles total. And one person died as a result of the collision and the fire that happened afterwards. I want to show you that after the catholics several vehicles caught fire and they were burning for a little bit before the Fire Department was able to put water on it. We had several calls from people saying, what is going on . And we come to find out that later several vehicles were mangled and burned together. One person did not make it out alive and was killed. The department is the Fire Department and the investigators are still there on the scene and, as you heard a chp officer say a few moments ago, its going to be another hour or so, maybe another two hours before they can open 580. All right. I want to show you the slowdown. Its backed up to livermore, which is not as bad as it could be. However, its very, very slow traffic. So its moving along at like ten miles an hour. Its going to take you a while to get through that area. Some other areas of the bay, 880 is slow still from san leandro to the fremont. And the south bay commute continues to slow. If you are driving that the silicone valley, all the major freeways are still pretty slow. Talking about the toll plaza of the bay bridge, the traffic backed up four 20 minutes or so. 880 slow northbound on the right. You can see traffic slowing down towards downtown oakland. A fiery crash that led to the death of one person on westbound 580. Now, the fire is out, but the scene is not yet clear. Traffic backed up all the way to tracy. This is closer to what it looked like later this morning. Lets bring in Sal Castaneda for whats happening now and the traffic effects at this moment. Well, gasia and dave, the traffic is backed up for a good long way. It looks like it backs up now from the bottom of the altamonte pass as you get down to livermore. But it is very, very slow traffic because the three right lanes continue to be blocked as they do an investigation. Some of the tow trucks have taken away some of the vehicles. They are special tow trucks that try to preserve evidence since it was a deadly crash. If this would have been an ordinary injury wreck, this would have been gone a couple of hours ago. But, unfortunately, one person did die. Several vehicles were on fire. And this commute is going to be done for the next few hours. Even if they were to magically pluck it out of the way right now. We are going to let you know that traffic is going to be slow in the area. We also want to let you know that there is other traffic around the bay that we can look at. That has been slow and has been great out there. As a matter of fact, this is a look at the san mateo bridge. Steves been talking about some of the weather coming in. It certainly does look like its arriving in the bay area, although i dont see any wet roads here on the san mateo bridge approach. We are also looking at the bay bridge. That is backed up for a typical delay of 20 or 25 minutes with no major problems. The rest of the commute is slow. 880 is normally slow from san leandro to oakland and this morning is no different. 8 32. And this is a look at the san jose commute, which also has been slow. Steve has our forecast. And the forecast includes rain . There is some in the city right now. A little bit. The giants have a day game today. Some rain up north. Well, federal drug Officials Say bay area hospitals have treated seven people who took what they thought was a common painkiller but it was actually a property powerful. The Drug Enforcement agency says the patients bought it on the street what they thought was norco. The dea says it also contained fentanyl. The patients were vomiting and had problems breathing. Well, transgender people in oxford, alabama, are banned from using public bathrooms that match their gender identity. The city council made it illegal for people to use public bathrooms that dont correspond to their gender at birth. Its a response to the new policy at target stores. Last week target said it will allow people to use the bathroom that matches the gender they identify with. People who violate the new ordinance in oxford, they could face a 500 fine or up to six months in jail. Well, the city of San Francisco is taking aim at those states with laws that discriminate against the lbgt community. Supervisor scott weiners proposed ordinance would ban the city from spending money in states that include mississippi and North Carolina. The city would have to stop entering into contracts with Companies Based in those states. Now, North Carolina balked local and state protections for lbgt workers and also requires transgender people to use bathrooms that correspond to their birth gender. Mississippi, well, they allow businesses to refuse to serve gays and lesbians if they have a religious objection.
