bodies were found at a mushroom farm and nursery of highway 92 that another farming business near highway one. now the suspected gunman, now look at this identified as 67 year old son. leisure hour of half moon bay taken into custody shortly after the mass shooting when his car was seen in the parking lot of the sheriff's substation and half moon, barry. dal is believed to have acted alone and there is no further threat to this community. investigators believe shaoul worked at one of the farms where the shooting to curb but so far there's no word of a possible motive. ktvu is james torres is in half moon bay right now, and he's here with one of the scenes of yesterday's shooting. as this investigation continues, james good morning. dave good morning to you. this is the first of the two shootings, according to the sheriff's office from yesterday afternoon. we are kind of getting a little bit of a closer look this morning from the scene here this is along highway 92 half moon bay. this is the mushroom farm just behind the spanish town shops. and some people who work here also live here. you can see the sheriff's office deputy blocking after the roadway, talking to some other detectives and investigators were headed out the scene this morning. way further back. you see what looks like some greenhouses, possibly part of the farm here, and then we suspect a little further back is where some of these people actually stay and live there not able to do that tonight. they weren't able to do that last night because this entire area is still a crime scene today have all been displaced and relocated. this area is where police say 67 year old chan li zhao shot five people. four of those victims. found dead here at the scene, and that's in addition to going to a second scene about three miles away, where xiao is accused of killing three more people. police tell us those victims are of hispanic and asian descent. they're all farm workers at those locations and in order to get more information for their investigations, detectives say they had to bring in translators to speak to some of the witnesses and the family members. we spoke to some volunteers of an organization who says they are collecting donations to help the victims families. emergency happens on the coast with the authority of the director belinda, we come out and we send a message to the community of what is needed so it can be toiletries. christmas gifts, you name it. so tonight what we did is we sent the message out. that were in need of um, warm blankets and hot food and snacks for the this afternoon that includes the one victim with life threatening injuries. recovering in the hospital will take it live back out here in half moon bay again, the sheriff's office from san mateo county still blocking off some access to actually get into this mushroom farm here. what we can see at this point now with the sun up now, with some police caution, tape down, and we can actually step a little closer. we're starting to see the detectives kind of come in and out of the scene here. we're seeing what looks like some greenhouses that might be part of that mushroom farm. and then way in the distance, likely going to be some residences where people actually work here also live here as well. city leaders say they opened a reunification center at the ides hall community center along main street. if you don't know exactly where that is, that's where the city usually holds that pumpkin weighing festival every fall season and the outside part of that area volunteer we spoke to with the alas, community center. she says that she's seen about 40 adults 20 children as of last night, using the resources that are offered at that center. that reunification center typically is used for a place where family members could come get access to those resources. counseling is usually the most common thing we hear about, but in some cases, family members are going there and hearing for the first time that their loved ones or involved in the shooting here and you see, there's still very much still activity because this is an active crime scene. the people who live there, live here rather are not able to stay here, not able to be inside their homes, their over at that reunification center and some of them spending the night there, and that's why a lot of these volunteer organization groups are asking for things like hot meals, warm blankets to make sure anyone who is staying there as a result of being displaced from here. is at least somewhat comfortable, of course, plenty of now in custody alley after a dramatic take down yesterday. yeah the video of that takedown was pretty studying. we are at the half moon bay sheriff's substation in this parking lot. that's right next to it is where the gunman was apprehended yesterday after shooting and killing seven people. he was just waiting in his car in the parking lot right next to the sheriff's office. a sheriff's deputy spotted him recognized him as the suspected gunman in this shootings in san mateo county sheriff's deputies commonly got him out of the car and arrested him. no guns were fired. the man accused of this tragedy is 67 year old june liza . how of half moon bay? he is in custody. he's unharmed. we spoke with a woman who was in her car in the same parking lot one space over from the gunman when deputies spotted him. surprised me to see the officer asking me pretty quietly to get back from my car and i scooted back a little bit. and then he asked me to get further back and further back. this all started around two in the afternoon. yesterday when sam mateo county sheriff's got a call about four people at a mushroom farm and nursery of highway 92, who had been shot to death of fifth person was shot in russia to sanford medical center seriously injured. then shortly afterwards, they got a second call about another shooting scene at a soil in trucking business in half moon bay. three people were shot and killed at that second location. we don't know the names of the victims yet this morning, but the sheriff's office said they were all farmworkers. this tragedy happened in the staying at a hotel that county and city leaders have provided they're also providing financial resources. along with mental health support here is the city manager talking about those services. the ktvu is james torres, who's already there and there's some new developments. james. good morning. dave good morning to you were at scene one of two of those shootings that happened yesterday afternoon. the scene here is still very much active, even about 17 hours after 911 operators got that very first call. i want to give you an idea of what this area kind of seems like here. this is off highway 92 kind of on that main road that takes you over to highway one. we're standing right next to pretty much. a big warehouse here and right next to us is a big rv yard here. i can't somewhere around just short of a dozen rvs here. there's kind of this same yard on either side of the roadway that we're standing right next to you in front of that roadway is a cemetery county sheriff's office deputy blocking through here, so the area we're standing him isn't actually the farm. it's just a couple of few little buildings and warehouses that leads you back there. this roadway leads you all the way back to the farm, and you can kind of see what looks like some greenhouses. from where we're standing a little bit in the distance here. there is some sof residences. down there. alongside normally spend the night here with their families were not able to do that last night because this whole area is still very much an active crime scene . so some of these folks have had to be displaced to other as you heard from ali area hotels or at a local reunification center set up by city leaders. this same place is where police say the gunman 67 year old chan li xiao, shot five people, four of those victims. found dead right here at the scene. now. that's in addition to go into a second scene about three miles away, where zhao is accused of killing three more people and police tell us those victims are of hispanic and asian descent. also farm workers at these two locations and their investigation was a little challenging in order to get more information for it. detectives had to bring in translators to speak to some of the witnesses and some of the family members. the sheriff's office of san mateo county, says this shooting happened right when kids were leaving school from the day say they specialize in helping latin americans during a massively tragic event or disaster. here's what they had to say. when it comes to their efforts. emergency happens on the coast with the in half moon bay, asking him what he might know about their family members who they think might have been in those areas where those shootings happen. the sheriff's office says they are still working to identify those victims. we also spoke to the coroner's office who is usually responsible for identifying those victims. they say they are not sure they're going to have a major update until a little later this afternoon because there's still so much to investigate. given that there are two separate scenes we are looking at, and that includes identifying that one victim who is still recovering from life threatening injuries at a hospital will take it back. live out here. half moon bay city leaders opening a reunification center at the ides hall community center along main street. that is where the city usually holds its major pumpkin festival that pumpkin weigh off this that they do every fall. so it's a complete 3 60 for what that space is supposed to be used. for now, that's being used for place where family members are going to get information going to take advantage of resources. one volunteer for that group i mentioned earlier said that she noticed about 40 adults and 20 children at that center as of last night, and unfortunately say that's going to be a place where some of these family members may find out for the first time that their loved ones might have been involved in the shooting in some way, so we're checking in with all those city leaders with the sheriff's office, the quarters office, you know, basically every agency that gets involved with something like this, the red cross getting involved as well. and once we have more updates, we will bring them to you. we're live this morning in half moon bay. i'm james torres. ktvu fox two news, james. thank you now, 7 40. we'll check on the morning commute here, and the big story continues to be delays on barred in the east bay. that's right. cassie and dave. the lafayette bar station is closed. we have a live picture of the bart station. you can see the gates are partially down. is there letting emergency workers in and out, but no one is coming into the station because person was on the track . according to part that person was hit and killed by a train. and now they're doing a recovery operation there. the trains are going past the station. they're not stopping at that station. it was a pretty big response at one time, but now there's still some vehicles left over. the fire department and rescue teams are reports of performing that recovery operation at the lafayette bart the things that we know is this is going to be closed for a while. the police and investigators about corner was just dispatched from martinez heading down to lafayette. and that's going to take awhile so and by the way that corner vehicle is going to take awhile because he's going to have to deal with a bunch of slow traffic on 6 80 hitting south. there's a crash at monument is also very heavy traffic on 6 80 heading down into denville this morning sat down 6 80. as you get down towards el cerro. there was a crash there. it's just really slow in the east bay when we come back just a bit. we're going to talk about some of the barriers, bridges and the silicon valley commute to one. let's get back to the headlines. after that mass shooting in half moon bay. the suspected attacker is now in custody after seven people were killed in two locations just a few miles apart yesterday afternoon. k two is james torres has more on how the people live and work in half moon bay are responding to what happened, james good morning to you. we are just outside the mushroom farm here. this is seen one of two of that shooting incident that happened yesterday afternoon where we are right around the spanish town apartments and one way you see a number of gardens and nurseries and just in front of what we're seeing right now is a warehouse. that's part of a landscaping business. but then if you go down this road behind me here, you see two vehicles from the cemetery in sheriff's county. ah sheriff's office here you go down this roadway, and that's where you head down towards that mushroom farm where police say the first half of the shooting happened. that's what they say. 67 year old chan li xiao, the suspect in this case, the gunman shot and killed four people shot 1/5 person here as well. that person still recovering in the hospital as of this morning, that's in addition to then going to a second scene about three miles away, where zhao is accused of killing three more people and police tell us all of those victims are of either asian or hispanic descent. each farm workers working at those two locations in order to get some information on their investigation, detectives had to bring in translators to speak to some of those witnesses and family members were also even hearing this morning that they're still using these translators to help try to identify who some of these victims are. the sheriff of the same mattel, canada. rather the sheriff of san mateo county, says the shooting happened right when kids were leaving school for the day, so it's likely some of them might have seen the deadly shooting as it was happening. we spoke to volunteers for the group. alas an organization specializing and helping latin americans during a disaster or tragic events. some of those volunteers tell us just how much this shooting hurts them. mortified scared and shocked that something like this would even actually happened in a small community here. it's tragic. i mean, for the children that have seen this i mean, the man was captured right across the street from the junior high devastated that. you know, this is now what more families have to deal with today. we heard from the town's vice mayor as well, who says he has been receiving text messages from people asking if he might know anything about their loved ones who they suspect might be or might have been in the area during that shooting. the sheriff's office says they are still working to identify the victims and those two shooting incidents. we also learned from the coroner's office that they're not sure they're going to have a major update in terms of identifications for at least several hours until probably later this afternoon. because there's still so much to be investigated. so many questions to be answered when you're talking about two different shooting scenes as well. city leaders, they created a unification center. not too far from where we're standing right now. that's at the community hall on main street and half moon bay. if you don't particularly know where that is, that is where the pumpkin festival usually starts, and they have that large, big pumpkin weigh off every fall. and now this morning, it's being used for something in a complete 3 60 rather 1 80 direction where now it's much more tragic space for families who are taking advantage of that spot as a place for resource is a place for grieving the volunteers that we spoke to who are offering to collect donations and give them out to some of those grieving families say they've seen as many as 40 people out at that redefine cation center as a as of yesterday evening. so certainly still much to be done in terms of getting us further into this investigation, but plenty to be done for some of the victims who are suffering a remote, enormous amount of heartbreak. and a lot of work to be done for those volunteers. volunteers were hoping to give them just a little bit of light during an awful situation. this morning. it happened bay. i'm james torres, ktvu fox. two news dreams. thank you continue our team coverage of this tragedy. ktvu sally rasmus live in half moon bay with details on what happened, ali. well andre just continuing with what james was talking about. the victims have not been identified. the seven people who were shot and killed by this gunman in half moon bay, but we're waiting for identification of those victims . but just in the last 15 minutes or so, we spoke to two gentlemen who identified themselves as cousins of two of the workers at that mushroom farmer warning the shootings happened in one of the gentlemen i spoke with, said that the manager of that farm called him and told him that one of his cousins had unfortunately died. in this shooting, and the other was at the hospital, but the way the gunman was apprehended in all this, it was sending there's video of it, in fact that we're showing you he actually after these two shootings apparently drove himself to the half moon sat in his parked car, and at one point, a sheriff's deputy recognized him sitting in that vehicle. and so mateo county sheriff's deputies calmly got him out of the car and arrested him. he's identified as 67 year old chun li xueju of half moon bay. he is in custody. we spoke with the woman who was in her car at that same parking lot one space over from the gunman. when deputies made the arrest. they had their guns drawn approach from behind the car. pretty tight formation and got up to the car and we're probably few feet behind it six ft. behind it or so and asked him to get out, took several as he and then he got out of the car, and eventually he was taken down to the ground. this started around two in the afternoon yesterday. that's when san mateo county sheriff's got a call about four people at a mushroom farm and nursery of highway 92, who had been shot to death. 1/5 person was rushed to stanford medical center with serious injuries. then shortly afterwards, a second call came in about another shooting this time, edit soil and trucking business in half moon bay near highway 13. people there were shot and killed at that second location. again we don't know the names of the victims, but the sheriff's office says they were all farm workers. and we mentioned just a short time ago. there were two people also farm workers who came to this sheriff substation looking for help trying to identify their two cousins who they were told were involved in all this were victims of this. there's also workers, dozens of workers and children who live and work on those farms, who some of whom witnessed the violence. that happened. they are now all being temporarily housed at hotels that county and city leaders have provided. working with at the farm. some of them witnessed what happened yesterday and for now, they cannot go back to the farms, and so they just need some support until they're able to go home and back to work, and we have local nonprofits and the county behavioral health services teams that will be going out and meeting with folks and starting to provide the mental health services today, and of course, it's not just today they're going to have to receive these services on an ongoing basis for the foreseeable future. cemetery county sheriff's deputies recovered the gun that's values . they believe he acted alone. he is again in police custody. as for a motive that is still unclear. there are reports that saudi worked at may have worked at the two farms where he went and shot people at those two locations again short time ago. we did talk to a couple of family members cousins of that they say of two of the victims that that mushroom farm they are inside. with the city manager. you just heard from that they're trying to city leaders are trying to put them in touch family members in touch with services for their loved ones were live in half moon bay, ali rasmus ktvu. box two
