A person who was walking along i580 has died after being hit by a vehicle. Police say they are still looking for the driver. It happened just after midnight on eastbound 580 at the san Leandro Hayward border near 150th avenue. Chp shut down all the lanes while they investigated the crash. The lanes have since reopened. So far no word as to why the person was walking on the highway. Were learning new developments about yesterdays deadly motorcycle crash in Sonoma County. It happened on objection dental road west of santa rosa. The driver of a white Subaru Outback crossed into the path of a motorcyclist. The motorcycle driver died, his passenger and the passenger in the subaru were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. The subaru passenger has been identified as singer norman greenbaum. Greenbaum wrote and recorded spirit in the sky in 1969. It was his best known song. Hes 72 years old and lived in Sonoma County for many years. Bad weather in Eastern Canada is considered a likely factor in a plane accident that injured dozens of people this morning. An aircanada flight from toronto to halifax, nova scotia ended with what officials called an abrupt landing, causing the plane to skid off the runway. 25 people went to the hospital. All injuries are considered minor. Power at the airport was knocked out briefly but airport operations are expected to be back to normal this morning. We are learning more about the copilot who intentionally crashed a passenger yet into the french alps last tuesday. A french tv station said Andreas Lubitz had been with his girlfriend for seven years, they were planning to get married next year but the day before the crash she decided to end the relationship. A german tabloid is also reporting another ex girlfriend claims lubitz used to have nightmares about crashing and said one day he would do something that would make the world remember his name. There are reports he may have been getting treatment for an eye condition that could have ended his career. An International Team of investigators continues to look for a motive in that crash that killed him and 149 others. But the father of a british crash victim says he wants authorities to focus on preventing other tragedies. If there was a motive or reason we do not want to hear it. Its not relevant. What is relevant is this should never happen again. That father also went on to say he felt the support of so many people during this difficult time especially the people in the town near the crash site. He hopes one day people will remember it only as a beautiful place and not as the scene of a horrible plane crash. That town held a Memorial Service led by a catholic bishop. Organizers say they hope the families of the crew and passengers on board the Germanwings Flight find solace knowing the world is praying for them. 200 people attended though its not clear how many were relatives of the victims. Right now nearly 10,000 people are making their way through the streets of San Francisco for this years rock n roll halfmarathon. Want to show you a look at the map, 13. 1 mile course started 30 minutes ago at the great highway. Runners will probably go from the great highway and make their way through the presidio across the golden gate bring before ending at Civic Center Plaza where theres a big party. Heres the midway point through the race. Theres the Golden Gate Bridge. Four lanes are closed to accommodate runners. Allie was at the start line when runners took off and has a look at their journey ahead. Three, two, one reporter were at the start of the San Francisco rock n roll halfmarathon at ocean beach. Great highway and fulton. These are some of the 8,000 runners taking part in the Half Marathon, 5k and also a 10k. On the Half Marathon course the 13mile course takes runners down the great highway to presidio and also they get to run across the Golden Gate Bridge. There are some competitive runners in this race of course but a lot of the people come here for the atmosphere. The race route also has stations where there are concerts and the runners end up at Civic Center Plaza with a performance by the band american authors. There are competitive runners but a lot of people come for the fun of it. Heres how the race organizer explains it. I think its a good way to approach the race. Its not a fast course. Its a gorgeous beautiful course in San Francisco. Reporter as you can expect there are going to be some road closures in the city because of this. The great highway from lincoln to balboa is going to be shut down until 9 00. Also the two northbound lanes of the Golden Gate Bridge will also be closed. The runners again will end the race at Civic Center Plaza where theres going to be a concert. He says spring breakers there no respect for themselves, for others and most of all for authority. That comes after seven students were shot during a party. This morning a 22yearold alabama man is in jail. Hes been charged with attempted murder. Police say he opened fire at a party, most of the party goers were students from alabama a m university. Arriving deputies called the scene complete chaos. It is complete chaos here. We have 100 witnesses or so. Were trying to separate, trying to interview. We have a mess. Victims were found inside the home and outside laying on the street. Investigators are expected to remain at that scene this morning. Here at home we take you to the front page of todays oakland tribune requesting, it focuses on San Jose Police officer Michael Johnson killed in the line of duty and his Academy Class who Police Officers association calls the closestknit group of officers in the department. As you see here the headline reads an unfortunate bond. The Academy Class of 2001 has lost two officers in the line of duty. Classmate Jeffrey Fontana was killed during a traffic stop just weeks after graduation. Now they lost officer johnson. According to the tribune there are only 19 members of that 35 member class still at San Jose Police department but johnsons death brought them all back together. They grieve as does this community. This thursday a public memorial for officer johnson is scheduled for 11 00 a. M. The service will be held at the s. A. T. Center in san jose. Lets go to Southern California. The front page of the l. A. Times raising the issue of rail safety once again. It follows a Commuter Rail accident yesterday right in front of the university of Southern California. The conductor of the train was critically injured, 20 others hurt after a car crashed into the train. Two of the trains cars went off the tracks, the driver of the vehicle was a usc student. A man stuck on a 320foot cliff in yosemite was rescued after stranded overnight. He was hiking with two friends in the afternoon when daylight began to fade. Two men took a short cut, the other stayed on the trail. During the descent one hiker broke his classes and had to stay glasses. Thats one the other continued and got stuck on the edge of the cliff. The man who stayed on the trail notified rescue crews about his missing friends. Both found safe. Shoppers at an east bay walmart got a scare when a fire broke out forcing them to evacuate. It happened about 7 30 last night at the Walmart Store on davis street in san leandro. Firefighters say it started in the kitchen of the mcdonalds in the store. The flames did set off the sprinkleler system and all the customers had to evacuate. It took firefighters 30 minutes to get the fire out. No injuries reported. Firefighters in southern montana are battling a 700acre wildfire. It happened sometime yesterday afternoon, a few miles west of red lodge. Police say wind gusts of up to 50 Miles Per Hour spread it to 700 acres. 500 people were evacuated but later were told they could go back. This is a picture of the ski slope just beyond the trees. A philadelphia couple received a scary phone call after their 4yearold left the house late at night in search of a slurpee. Officials say it made an abrupt landing before sliding off the runway. 25 people are treated for minor injuries. There was a storm at the airport when that incident happened. There are several new details about the germanwings pilot who prosecutors say crashed a plane into the french alps last week. One report says Andreas Lubitz fiancee broke up with him the day before the deadly crash. Another says he was having eye problems that could have ended his career as a pilot. A third report quotes an ex girlfriend saying he would do something that would make people remember him. You always talk about the weather that runners would like. So hes a mile ahead of the other runners. Looks like that is one of the lead motorcycles head hadding through. So sometime maybe during this live shot we will see him cross the finish line. Its at larkin and mcalice center. This is the San Francisco rock n roll Half Marathon. Theres also a 5k and 10k happening here. Theres the finish line. A concert here at civicker plaza for everyone who Civic Center Plaza for everyone who finishes the race. It will be performed by the band american authors. They play best day of my life. The appeal of this race according to organizers and a lot of people who take part, there are competitive runners but a lot of people come through and do it for the course. The course takes people from ocean beach to the presidio, people get to run across the Golden Gate Bridge and takes them through a lot of the scenic spots in the city. Heres what the race organizer said. I think its a good way to approach this race. This is not a fast course. Its a gorgeous beautiful course in San Francisco. San franciscos Police Department has another problem with its crime lab. That according to the San Francisco chronicle. The paper reports irregularities with the labs dna unit. Police say one technician and supervisor have been reassigned while investigating apparent violations of department testing standards. The paper reports testimony and evidence during a trial last year prompted this investigation. The chronicle says that trial indicated that analysts may have filled in the gaps of incomplete genetic evidence. State law only allows complete samples to be entered into the criminal database. That could call into question evidence used in hundreds of other cases. Police in hayward are warning students to be careful after three attempted kidnaps there in the past six weeks. Police say a 16yearold girl was walking home from Hayward High School friday when a man grabbed her and forced her into the back seat of a white car. Investigators say the man got on top of the girl and pulled out a gun, luckily they say she fought back, was able to run home where her parents called 911. This is an extraordinary circumstance for any 16year old to face. And were very proud of her for the way she reacted to this. The first two incidents were reported near tennyson high school. Both girls unhurt there. Police say its possible the same man could be responsible. They have released a sketch of him and there it is. This man is described as latino or east indian in his mid20s. The case of a 6yearold boy murdered nearly 35 years ago in Southern California may soon be solved. Yesterday Police Arrested 53 yearold Kenneth Rasmussen in idaho. The rental centered sex offender was convicted twice of molesting young boys in the 1980s. Hes now been connected to the murder case of Jeffrey David vargo. The boy went missing while bicycling around his home july 2, 1981. The next day his strangled body was found at a construction site about 25 miles away. He will 235eus a judge tomorrow and brought to l. A. Tomorrow to face murder charges. An officer killed in downtown philadelphia. Its not clear what led up to the shooting or how police were alerted to it. Police found the offduty officer with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. Investigators say they do not have anyone in custody and they do not believe the pub is at risk. A boston Police Officer remains in Critical Condition after he was shot in the face. Hes in a medically induced coma. Officer John Moynihan just pulled over a car when the suspect pulled out a gun and shot him just below the eye. Other officers shot and killed a suspect when he tried to run away. That man had a history of Violent Crime including several gun convictions. Police say these types of shootings are rain in boston. Police in davis are still trying to determine what led up to the deaths of a uc davis veterinary student and her roommate whitneyeningler, less than two, did Whitney Engler less than two months from graduating. Classmates held a candlelight vigil this is in no way a celebration of her passing, its about the joy she brought to everyones life. Engler and her 23yearold roommate joseph hein were found shot to death at their home after a sevenhour standoff with police that started thursday night. Police say they are investigating the is a a murder suicide but not determined who shot who. Her friends say her service dog escaped during the siege and want to find rosy and turn her over to englers mother. Crews looking for two people till missing after an explosion in a new york city Apartment Building. Admitting the chances of finding them are slim but not ready to give up yet. Meanwhile investigators are trying to figure out what exactly caused that blast. Consolidated edison says last august utility workers found multiple leaks in a gas line. Con ed says the leaks were repaired, and it could take a week of round the clock work to sift through all the debris from the buildings. Into berkeley researchers lead an effort to better understand earthquakes. The newspaper reports that thers had been studying quartz samples. They are looking for reasons for the stress causes. For the first time researchers have measured strains on the faults grinding tectonic plates. The fallout continues over indianas new controversial religious freedom law. Thousands rallied in indfan police on saturday to express their displeasure with the governor. He signed legislation last week called the religious freedom restoration act. Its a law that allows businesses to deny Service Based on religious and sexual preferences. Supporters say its all about the freedom of religion but opponents including some Business Owners say it could lead to discrimination. My frustration with it is that it was passed in wrapping it around a flag of Business Ownership as if i needed this kind of protection. I didnt ask for this kind of protection. The final four will be held in indianapolis next week. The ncaa released a statement that reads in part angies list cancelled plans for a proposed 40 million campus expansion project in indianapolis that would have brought 1, 000 jobs to that area. So far theres no word as to why the person was out there. We are learning new developments about yesterdays deadly motorcycle crash in Sonoma County. Happened on occidental road west of santa rosa. The driver of a subaru crossed with a motorcyclist. The passenger of both vehicles were taken to the hospital with injuries. The passenger of the subaru was identified as singer norman greenbaum. He wrote and recorded spirit in the sky in 1969. It was his best known song though he did record other well known songs under other names. Greenbaum, who is 72 years old lived in Sonoma County for many years. Bad weather in Eastern Canada is considered a likely factor in a plane accident that injured dozens of people this morning. An air canada flight from toronto to halifax, nova scotia ended with what officials called an abrupt landing. That did cause the plane to skid off the runway just after midnight. At the time of the crash local news outlets say it was snowing heavily. 25 people went to the hospital, all of their injuries are considered minor. Power at the airport was knocked out briefly but airport operations are expected to be back to normal this morning. We are learning more about the copilot who intentionally crashed a passenger jet into the french alps on tuesday. A french tv station says Andreas Lubitz had been with his girlfriend tore seven years, they had planned on getting married next year but the day before the crash she decided to end the relationship. A german tabloid is also reporting that another ex girlfriend is claiming he used to have nightmares about crashing and said one day he would do something that would make the world remember his name. There are also reports that he may have been getting treatment for an eye condition that could view ended his career have ended his career. Investigators continue to look for the mostive. But the father of a british crash victim says he wants the authorities to focus on preventing other tragedies. If there was a motive or reason we dont want to hear it. Its not relevant. According to the San Francisco chronicle. According to the paper irregularities with the labs dna unit are at issue. Police say one technician and her supervisor have been reassigned while investigating apparent violations of department testing standards. The paper reports testimony and evidence during a trial last year prompted this investigation and the chronicle says that trial indicated the analyst may have filled in the gaps of incomplete genetic evidence. State law only allows complete samples tore entered into the criminal database. That could call into question evidence used in hundreds of other cases. The case of a 6yearold boy who was murdered nearly 35 years ago in Southern California may soon be solved. Yesterday Police Arrested 53 yearold Kenneth Rasmussen of idaho. The registered sex offender was convicted twice of molesting young boys in the 1980s. Investigators now connected him to the murder case of Jeffrey David vargo. The boy went missing while bicycling around his home in july of 1981. The day after he went missing his strangled body was found at a construction site 25 miles away. Rasmussen is expected to appear before a local judge tomorrow and will then be brought to california to face murder charges. Police in hayward are warning students to be careful after three attempted kidnappings in the past six weeks. Police say 16yearold girl was walking home from Hayward High School friday when a man grabbed her and forced her into the back seat of a white car. Investigators say the man got on top of the girl and pulled out a gun. Luckily they say she fought back, and was able to run home where her parents called 911. This is an extraordinary circumstance for any 16year old to face. And, were very proud of her for the way she reacted to this. The first two incidents were reported near tennyson high school, both of those girls also got away unhurt. Police say its possible the same man could be responsible. Theyve released this sketch, the man is described as latino or east indian in his mid20s. Friends and family continue to mourn the two men killed in a west oakland fire. Yesterday a group gathered at the mclaughlin gallery in San Francisco to remember 36year old daniel mo thomas. Thomas was a professional artist who started a few years ago but was already making his mark. Some people even referred to his work as revolutionary. A few of his pieces were on display yesterday. Friends are calling his death a huge loss for the art community. He was a very talented artist, one of our shining stars. I think he had a lot to say and i think he had work that the rest of the world would be interested in seeing. Ill miss everything about him. Ill miss working with him and looking forward to seeing what his new ideas are going to produce. Earlier in the day friends and family gathered at the chapel of the chimes in oakland to mourn 27yearold davis latona. Thomas and latona were killed in the threealarm fire last saturday that swept through their live work space in oakland. Its believed to have been accidental possibly caused by a burning cigarette. Emergency crews are still looking for two people missing after a new york city Apartment Building exploded. Officials admit the chances of finding those people are slim but say they are not ready to give up yet. Meanwhile investigators are trying to figure out exactly what caused that blast. Consolidate edsson says last august a gas line was broken, Officials Say those were repaired. Officials say it could take a week of round the clock work to sift through the debris from the buildings. Scientists say they are getting closer to predicting earthquakes. Maybe they cant say exactly when the big one will hit but they have a better idea of how and why they hit. A study lasted a year and produced pretty incredible results. The focus was on samples collected a mile andahalf beneath the san andreas fault. Researchers found on microscopic fault line cracks that may have been the result of multiple earthquakes. They also say the power behind the quakes is higher than previously measured. A man from napa is selling tshirts to raise money for some people affected by the earthquake that hit seven years ago. This is rob frias. A month before the earthquake he moved both of his most of his belongings to a napa Storage Facility. After the quake he couldnt get his stuff because the building was deemed unsafe. More than 200 units were affected. The Storage Facility is now trying to charge its tenants to pay for the 167,000dollar recovery effort before the units are destroyed. Hes also started a go fund me page to help raise money. Its 8 36. Right now nearly 8,000 people making their way to the streets of San Francisco for this years rock n roll rock halfmarathon. This halfmarathon started about two hours ago. So now turn the camera around and you can see a lot of people just wrapping up, making their way across the finish line here. We were at the starting line on the other side of town at ocean beach at 6 30 this morning. Great highway and fulton. This 13mile halfmarathon course takes runers from ocean beach through the presidio, over the Golden Gate Bridge and back and there are music and parties stages along the way. A lot of people run this for fun but there are competitive runners too. Some of them with pretty incredible stories. This morning we met adrian broca of los angeles, visually impaired, lost 95 of his vision as an adult because of a genetic condition. He ran the halfmarathon in about one hour and 30 minutes. He said it was a pretty tough course, the first few miles have a kind of a steep incline but told us about the incredible sense of accomplishment he felt crossing the finish line. You think about it as a metaphor in life. Even though you may face challenges at the start, youre able to see light at the end of the tunnel once you get closer to the finish line. Reporter he obviously has a lot of mental tenacity but how did he do it physically . He had a guide runner tethered to him for the entire run. We talked to him as well. You have to concentrate not on your own running but his where he is and the turns that are coming up. You have to concentrate a lot more reporter Michael Cliff of ireland volunteered to be a guide runner in this race. Its only the second time hes been a guide runner. He and broca never met before today. They never trained together or anything but both men said they had a great sense of teamwork and that they worked really well together and both of them said this is probably the beginning of a long friendship between the two of them. Here at the rock n roll Half Marathon, people still making their way across the finish line. California could have a lot more voters if two state lawmakers get their way. They want to require the department of Motor Vehicles to send all customer information to state election officials. Then those officials would determine if a person is eligible to vote. People who pass that screening would automatically be registered to vote. Supporters say it would increase voter turnout. They say right now seven Million People who are eligible to vote are not registered. Oregon is currently the only state with a similar law. Animal rights activist stage a unique demonstration to show the conditions egglaying hens live in. The vaccaville farm vacaville farm offered people a chance to stand in the cage to get an idea of the crowded conditions. Animal place is here today to encourage folks to brave the cage and see what life is like for 95 of hens on egg farms. This year california implemented a bill that requires egglaying hens be confined in ways that allow them to lie down, stand up, fully extend their limbs and turn around freely. State regulations provide about 116 square inches per hen. That is about the size of a sheet of legal paper. Cesar chavez is being honored today in napa. When this happened to my grandson want to put that out, not one person came and gave me a hug. Not one person. Oakland pastor Curtis Fleming says people need to reclaim their neighborhood and hes hoping faith will help them do just that. There is hope, there is a support system and we want to be part of that. This morning pastor fleming and the Oakland BaptistMinisters Union will begin the 59th annual citywide revival. They hope to increase participation within schools and neighborhoods with an emphasis on the target audience of young africanamerican males, claudine now joins us with pastor fleming. When your dealing with those kind of things how do you bring hope and faith back into the community . How do you bind people together . Fortunately its been done in the past. We realize that when we come together as a Safe Community and as a Community Overall that we can set the temperature of our community, our neighborhoods. The church has traditionally been the thermostat for what goes on in the community and we hope to do that again. Tell me about the revival. How do people get involved . Youre coming together at evergreen . Yes, at evergreen baptist church. This is our season of restoration. This is one of the greatest seasons in the church calendar. Its the season of that that brings about new hope, new life and new beginning. We come together to recommit ourselves to focus on what is important to god and that is to love him and love people. How important this is obviously palm sunday, easter week when everyone is it a touchstone for people to say were in this together, were not alone . Because of our faith we have each other . One of the things ms. Washington said is they cant do it by themselves. She was making a call to the neighborhood and to the residents to say everyones got to get in this. Right. Traditionally what you have in this country and the other countries is that the Faith Community have been the integral part in the life of the society, of the community. So we believe that as we come together we do our part. We work with the individuals within our community that our community will change. But there needs to be a moral compass. There needs to be someone to say this behavior is not acceptable. There needs to be someone to go home and tell their children that you cannot act like this. You cannot handle your conflicts in this particular way because we all live here together. You were saying its more tough love needed. Tough love, definitely. While many people are just getting up others are literally running across town. Its the rock n roll Half Marathon. Runners are getting a chance to relax at the finish line. There are some happy people coming over that finish line, ready to be done. A lot of people crossing the finish line are at two, two and a half hours completing the marathon. Theyre making good time. I see a lot of people coming through. There are 8000 people who signed up. It started at 6 30 at ocean beach. The 13mile course starts there and takes people over the Golden Gate Bridge. There are party stations and music stations along the way. A lot of the people really take their time going through. Some people do it just for the fun of it, just to enjoy the scenic spots, running through the scenic spots in the city. One of the 8000 runners and also one of the organizers of the is roger craig. I had a chance to talk with him before he started and asked him which sport he loved more, football or track. Maybe its not a fair question because obviously there is a lot of running in football. Here is what he had to say. I am a runner. My first sport is track and field. Football is secondary. This is my life, you know, being able to run in this runners community. Look at these people, amazing. Reporter that community of runners includes some elite runners. We talked to the mens winner. He is from fresno and completed in one hour and six minutes. He said the course is hard especially at the beginning with a lot of inclines but he says it is helping him be closer to his goal, to place in the top five of the Boston Marathon next month. Thanks. A person walking along interstate 580 died after being hit by a vehicle. Police say theyre still looking for the driver. This happened just after midnight on east bound 580 near 150th avenue. The chp had to shut down the lanes while they investigated. The lanes have been reopened. So far there is no word as to why the person was walking on the freeway. We are learning new developments on yesterdays deadly motorcycle crash in Sonoma County. The crash happened on occidental road. The motorcyclist driver died and his passenger the passenger in the super roux were taken to the subaru were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Greenbaum wrote and recorded spirit in the sky. He did record other well known songs under other names. He is 72 years old and has lived in Sonoma County for many years. Bad weather is a factor in a plane crash that injured dozens. It ended with what officials call an abrupt landing. It caused the plane to skid off the run way. We are learning more about the copilot who intentionally crashed the passenger jet into the french alps last tuesday. A french tv station says Andreas Lubitz had been with his girlfriend seven years and they were planning to get married. The day before the crash she decided to end the relationship. A german tabloid is reporting that another exclaims lubitz used to have nightmares about crashing and said one day he would do something that would make the world remember his name. There are reports lubitz may have been getting treatment for an eye condition that could have ended his career. An International Team of investigators are continuing to look for the motive in the crash that killed him and 149 others. The father of a british crash victim says he wants authorities to focus on preventing other tragedies. If there was a motive or reason, we do not want to hear it. Its not relevant. What is relevant is this should never happen again. That father adds he has felt the support of so many people during this difficult time, especially the people in the town near the crash site. Check out the two llamas hanging outs. They became social media stars because they escaped from a planned event and then this happened. They led police on a chase through the streets of sun city, arizona. No one could catch them. Go left, right, straight. No one could get them. For 20 minutes people failed to grab the llamas. They were lassoed by a modern day cowboy and returned to their owners. These antics handed the llamas in hot water with department of ag. After this case, usda made it a requirement for animals to have a license to attend events. A 16 Year Old Girl was walking home from Hayward High School friday when a man grabbed her and forced her into the back seat of a white car. The man got on top of the girl and pulled out a gun. Luckily she fought back and was able to run home where her parents called 911. This is an extraordinary circumstance for any 16 year old to face. We are very proud of her for the way she reacted to this. The first two incidents were reported near ten son high school. Both of the girls also got away unhurt.
