All they know right now is that the goo is not petroleum. Its not Vegetable Oil. Its not fish oil. This is some gray gunk thats very sticky on the feathers. Extremely difficult to get off. And the to the point where the birds arent even trying to preen it off. Anything that disrupts their waterproofing means they will stay on the water. They beach themselves and become hypothermic. Some birds have died. For those who survived, the focus is getting the goo off them. It affects their ability not to get hypothermic. Usually an oil spill, experts use dish soap to clean up the birds but thats not working with this. So theyve turned to baking soda and vinegar which has not been an eebsy easy or quick process. Its making these birds hypothermic, could even kill them. We are live along shoreline drive in alameda, where some of the birds were found late last week. Once they are found, they are taken to a bird rescue facility in fairfield where they are given roundtheclock care. Again, about 12 birds have died so far. Close to 100 birds have been brought to the facility. Officials still dont know what this substance is. They describe it as a gray, sticky substance that is very difficult to wash off. For years, the center has been using dawn liquid soap, dish soap and water to remove the mysterious gunk. But for this stuff, whatever it is, they have to use a mixture of vinegar and baking soda to get it off. We determined it was not petroleum oil. They are pretty sure its not Vegetable Oil or fish oil. What does that leave us with . First thought, could it be an algae bloom . We see those around here, but that usually just gets on the feathers and damages the water proofing. We bring the birds in, give them supportive care, wash them up, they are good. This is some gray gunk thats very inert. Reporter for the birds that did survive, Officials Say it could take weeks before they are okay to be released. As for the center, they say because there isnt anyone claiming responsibility for the mysterious substance, the international booked center is pretty much footing the cost of the care of the birds. I just got off the phone with some of the bird rescuers moments ago and they say they have found some birds that have been affected by the sticky substance. Parking meters will be enforced today in San Francisco and wherever youre going. Good idea to read the signs. Dont just assume they are not being enforced. 8 47. Lets go to steve in the studio. Thank you, sal. We do have some clearing taking place already. Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Wont take long to burn off the fog. High clouds really flew out of the picture. Some of that fog was right down on the deck and some produced pretty good drizzle, measurable amounts this morning. Looks like the fog post, bay and inland fog, the combination. Excuse me. 50s on the temps. 50s for some of the higher elevations. Water temps are almost near 60 degrees, monterey, half moon bay. Overall, look for a partly sunny morning, but clouds and if not morning sun, everyone looks like they will be in on the afternoon sun. Fog and drizzle ending pretty soon. 60s on the temps. Were already sitting at about 50 to 55. Except for those areas that are stuck in some of that valley fog, most locations will be in the mid60s. A few upper 60s after wednesdays cooldown, then we get a northeast breeze and that means warm, really warm, especially towards the weekend for us. Could be a really howling offshore event for Southern California, but beach weather for us. And they have got problems back east, lot of black ice . Terrible ice storm from pennsylvania and new york up to the northeast. Yikes. By the way, youve done a yeomans job. We made it, dave. Thank you. Thank you, steve. A Southern CaliforniaHigh School Basketball coach has been suspended after his team scored too many points during a recent game. The Girls Basketball team at Arroyo Valley High School in San Bernardino beat another team 1612. My gosh. Coach Michael Anderson is accused of unnecessarily running up the score. District officials have now suspended him for two games. We are really emphasizing that we want them to pursue victory with honor, and that means playing the game with dignity. Anderson says he was not trying to embarrass the other team and the game, quote, simply got away. The schools website shows the team has played 17 games this season and won 13 of them by 40 or more points. I always remember my dad went to a prep school. He said the soccer team was so good, they Won Every Game 90. The coach said whoever scores the 10th goal would get kicked off the team. Wow. He said theres no need to rub it in. 90, thats enough. Interesting. 8 50. Still ahead. Bill cosby here in Northern California. After the break, what happened during his most recent performance and his plans to hit the stage right here in the bay area . Welcome back to mornings on 2. There is a report the u. S. Government was really confident about accusing north korea of that Sony Pictures cyber attack because it was tracking north koreas computer networks. According to the New York Times, a National Security agency penetrated north koreas cyber system and installed malware, tracking its internal workings. The New York Times says the evidence gathered by that software was critical in persuading president obama to come out and accuse the north korean attack attacking sony. Skeptics have said the sony hacking was probably done by a former sony employee.
