This is near san leandro. Well tell you what led up to this tragic chain of events. As you see a makeshift memorial at the scene of the crash. Flowers, candles, teddy bears. West turning more southerly. That system gets closer. But a lot of 60s. I know weve had the issue all morning long with the overturned big rig on the east bay. Any improvement . They are making progress. They are taking the turkeys inside the truck, frozen turkeys out of the truck that flipped over on the offramp from 680. They were butterball turkeys headed for a store. But they had did not make it, the driver did not make the turn. The turkeys need to be loaded onto another truck and then they will right the truck and make sure the diesel theres no more diesel spilled on the road. Avoid that offramp. Chp thinks it will be closed until 10 00. As you go to 580, this accident we just talked about is not affecting the freeway, but 580 is really slow this morning coming in all the way through livermore. One solid line of slow traffic. 680 out of pleasanton is very slow. Unlike yesterday, we had a lot of slow traffic all over the place. We also have slow traffic on 880 south from 238 all the way down into fremont. Bay bridge toll plaza is backed up for a 25, 30minute delay. It was an earlier stalled vehicle on that span. The traffic is going to be a little bit slower than usual. Back to the desk. All right. Thank you, sal. A memorial has been set up at a Street Corner in Alameda County where a speeding car hit and killed a young teenager. Witnesses say the vehicle was fleeing from police at the time of the crash. Alex savidge is at the intersection near san leandro where it happened. Good morning, alex. Reporter well, tori, good morning to you. This was a pursuit by Alameda County sheriffs deputies that took a deadly turn last night when the car that was being chased blew through this red light according to witnesses and slammed right into a boy, a 14yearold boy in the crosswalk. He may have been on a scooter according to some witnesses. That boy died later on at the hospital. You can see the memorial set up here on the sidewalk. People are leaving behind candles and stuffed animals and flowers this morning. And Close Friends who just came out here to the scene identified this boy as 14year old ivan cruz. They say he was a frebman and nearby San Leandro High School. This crash happened in the unincorporated area near san leandro. Witnesses estimate this car may have been going as fast as 50 Miles Per Hour, patrol cars were in pursuit with lights an sirens on at the time. After striking the boy at the intersection, witnesses say this driver didnt even slow down. Deputies were not able to catch up with that car and the driver involved in that deadly crash remains on the run this morning. One man who pulled under here to this scene shortly after pulled up here to the scene shortly after the boy was hit is hoping the driver was caught. I dont think its right that a man who did Something Like this should be free. He hit the kid. He should pay his dues. Reporter sheriffs investigators say at times during last night eight chase, the car was driving on the wrong side of the road. Apparently, deputies were trying to stop the car for reckless driving, although were trying to find out if the driver may have been wanted for another crime. We reached out to a sheriffs spokesman for more information. Well get an update on this investigation at some point here at the scene this morning. A spokesperson is headed out here. We do understand the deputies involved in last nights pursuit that ended with the death of a 14yearold boy will all be on paid leave for the time being. Menlo park police are investigating a deadly officer involved shooting it happened yesterday afternoon near middlefield and willow roads right near the headquarters of sunset magazine. Investigators say three Police Officers were responding to a burglary call spotted a suspicious man outside an office park. A foot pursuit ensued. One of the officers deployed his taser. At that time, an adult male suspect pulled a weapon. An officer then fired on the suspect who was pronounced dead at the scene. Its still not clear if the suspect ever fired his weapon. 7 06. Police in san mateo warning about a dangerous email. This one falsely reporting a Child Predator in the neighborhood. Its really a scam email. If you open it, it installs malway to steal user names, passwords and credit card information. Now, according to police, the e mail claims to be announcing neighborhood Safety Information. It tells you that a Child Predator just moved into your area. Police say dont open that e mail or click on any links related to it. Happening today, a lake at San Franciscos presidio will be filled with poison on purpose. They are trying to get rid of invasive fish. This will happen at Mountain Lake. Its a fouracre pond. They will put 50 gallons of the poison pumped into the water. Scientists say getting rid of the fish will help restore the ecosystem. The Presidio Trust group took photos of the fish dumped there and repopulated. It includes catfish, carp, sturgeon and pet goldfish. Scientists have tried but failed to get rid of the fish without using poison but today that poison will be pumped in and then the dead fish will be removed. Now, fish arent the only marine life found at Mountain Lake. About two decades ago, a three foot long alligator nicknamed the golden gator was captured there. The workers tried to trap it for two months before a curator at the zoo caught it with a rod and raw fish. The allegateert was taken to the alligator was taken to the zoo. The fbi says that drop may have been because of the creation of new Smaller Police districts. Detroit, once again, was number one in america as the most dangerous city. Memphis and st. It will be held in richmond after eight shootings in the past week including one where a 16yearold boy was killed. Rodney frazier was a junior and varsity basketball player at richmond high school. He was shot several times friday night right in front of his home. Police say five of the people injured in the recent shootings, they were teenagers. The vigil today begins at 5 00 at the civic center plaza. It will be led by richmond high schools basketball team. Four students from Northern California who were detained in russia and put on trial, well they are back home this morning. The three young women from san jose and a young man from chico, they left sfo two weeks ago to to a conference in russia. They immediately hit it off with the young people from russia who they met at camp. But then their trip changed. Last week when russian authorities showed up at their door. Prosecutors arrived along with officials from the Migration Office and some Police Officers and a news channel and asked us to present our passports where they actually processed us, fingerprinted, read us our charges. The four students were finally allowed to leave russia on monday after they pled guilty to charges that they had the wrong kind of visa. Each of them paid a fine of about 110. Original American Idol judge Randy Jackson is leaving the show. Last season he moved to a mentoring role after 12 years as a judge. Maureen naylor looks out the outpouring of support for a volunteer from santa clara who has spent his life giving to others. Reporter inside the santa clara apartment complex this is a dodge ballgame. Reporter toms apartment is filled with games and toys for School Children and moving boxes. The 69yearold says disabilities kept him from holding down a job so he dedicated his life to volunteer work. He spent the last 50 years as a coach and teachers aide in the santa clara unified school district. And showed us this black and white photo from when he was 19. I can tell you some of the kids names on there. Give you an example. Greg cook, mike gill. Hes a fireman in fresno, california. Reporter 50 years later, he can still recall the players names. Got it. Reporter but tom goodson was keeping a secret. I was so stressed to be honest with you, i was very stressed. She started a Fundraising Campaign to cover his movying costs and the increase in rent at a new apartment. Four days later more than 12,000 has been raised. I have been receiving letters and notes from people from Different Countries that were affected by tom when he as a coach or as a yard duty. I think its wonderful. But i tell you what, im overwhelmed to be honest with you. I dont expect things from people. Reporter it turns out he could have been able to stay in the department after a deal was reached with the Housing Authority but by then, goodson secured a new place to live. Minor troubles on the bridge. Right now, it looks pretty good getting into San Francisco. I say pretty good, i mean there are no stalled vehicles. This is northbound and southbound 880. Not too bad. Usually the slow traffic doesnt start until after 8 00 heading north, on the right hand side. We still have the alcosta boulevard offramp from southbound 608 closed because of an overturned truck loaded down with turkeys. The turkeys had to be removed and the truck has to be righted before this ramp is reopened and chp says that will be about 10 00 this morning. Back to the desk. All right. Happening right now, we could be Just Moments Away from seeing history in the making. A spacecraft and probe that lawn fned ten years ago that launched ten years ago is a couple of miles away from possibly landing on a comet. Ktvus brian flores, live at chabot space and Science Center. They are watching a watch party over there. Good morning. Reporter good morning, dave. This doesnt get more exciting, does it . This is exciting stuff. We could be seeing history in the making. Were live here inside the Science Center. Were in the rotunda area. Inside is the planetarium where about 130, 150 people are attending the watch party. Its pretty loud in there. Certainly exciting stuff. In fact, the probe well as the spacecraft have been transmitting pictures, a couple of them that we can show you. This one that we just got a couple of minutes ago, shows the spacecraft, the probe, actually descending onto the comet which is about 316 miles away from the planet earth. Its reaching there. Its almost there. So hopefully, it will land on their safely. The second picture i want to show you which was about an hour ago shows the probe descending actually separating from the spacecraft. That spacecraft took off from planet earth back in 2004. Again, its taken ten years to reach the comet which is over 300 millions miles from earth. There have been chaps throughout the mission. Theres still some challenges ahead. The main one is landing the probe onto the comet. It cant be manually controlled from mission control, so basically this is it. Because of the distance from earth to the comet as well Scientists Say it takes about 30 minutes to reach earth. So we wont know for sure until it possibly confirmation that it landed on the comet until roughly around 8 00 this morning. There are some things scientists have learned already. Its not the shape they expected it to be at all. This is what we call a contact. This was once two objects that fused together. Thats what gave it that unusual shape which made the landing even more challenging. It didnt have a nice even surface. But learned a little bit about a composition. It has carbon dioxide, it has water. We expect there is a lot of water, ice on the comet. As the comet gets closer to the sun, that water ice, evaporates and gives off gas. Reporter the comet is about 2 and a half mile acs across. They say if it lands successfully, it is expected to last until the end of december. If it continues on, it could last longer. Again, depending depending on the orbiting spacecraft and the probe. About 130 people are inside the planetarium taking a look at the live feed from the European Space agency. Want to mention one thing. Theres been a lot of reference to this movie armageddon that many of us have seen. The only thing that they say is scientifically correct about it, the gravetational slingshot of that Scientists Say the spacecraft had to do this twice around the sun to gain enough speed. Once it got closer to mars, it had a slingshot to main more speed. Overall, very interesting stuff. Hopefully well hear confirmation later on this morning whether the probe did land. This is officer nelson. Hes giving the latest on a chase last night that ended with a car hitting and killing a young boy. What occurred, that would be chp. Wouldnt they be able to get the license plates on the car . We are looking some leads. Were bound and determined to catch this guy. The fact that you guys havent released a suspect vehicle, does that mean up dont want to release it because you dont want to make them aware of the information you might have . Well, i dont know if thats 100 correct. Were not releasing that at this point. Again, part of this is because its a chp thing. Not us. But believe me when i tell you, the sheriffs investigators are actively checking all leads to bring this person to justice. [the question is inaudible] my understanding, three minutes or less. Right. That was the deputy that initially started the pursuit never saw the child get hit. When the other deputy did see the child get hit, he reengaged it because he knew that kid had been seriously, seriously injured. In fact, he was killed. Brrk the question is inaudible] well, multiple. We have the deputies themselves and then in this case, thats exactly what happened. He canceled his own pursuit. That happens a lot for us. We also have sergeants monitoring it and a watch commander monitoring it. Thats all done in accordance with our policies. Weve been listening live to a live News Conference. This is sheriff sergeant jd nelson bringing us the latest on the continuing search right now in the area of san leandro. Last night, a pursuit chasing a car, a suspect car, a car ended up hitting a young man and killing him. Now, the police are still and then the car took off and they are still searching for the car. Jd nelson said they are working on several leads. They are determined to catch them catch whoever was driving that car. This is a continuing investigate. Well bring you more information as it comes into our newsroom. But you heard it live from near san leandro and well stay on this story throughout the morning. 7 39. In east san jose, a woman was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver. Now, she was carrying clothing or laundry on south king road around 4 30 yesterday afternoon when she was hit and died there at the scene. The driver did stop. Is now facing charges of dui. This was the 21st pedestrian death in san jose this year. Last year, 26 pedestrians or bicyclists died in san jose. This morning, the 4year old boy who fell more than 200 feet from a cliff in bodega bay is in intensive care at oaklands childrens hospital. Sebastian johnson was hiking with his family on bodega head monday afternoon. He was throwing rocks with his mother when he slipped and and fell. His mother called 911. We spoke to the firefighter who represented rescue sebation. He face he found him face down in the rocks. He said the little boy was crying. Thats when the firefighter said he shifted from First Responder into father mode. Trying to get him know his mom is up top waiting for him. I dont really know what hes comprehending. Sebastian is being treated for several injuries including broken bones and scratches on his face. Firefighters warned everyone to be careful in that area because the rocks are loose and there are no guardrails. A coast guard helicopter that responded to the rescue of Sebastian Johnson remains grounded on the cliff this morning. Its been unable to take off because of the weather and also because of mechanical failure. There are reports a crane will need to be brought in to remove the chopper. Its what makes a subaru, a subaru. Police alongs the Washington State oregon border mountain took a 911 call for an intruder. Two weeks ago in the city of vancouver, washington, officers were tracking a gunman who had shot a neighbor. They thought they had him cornered but it was an innocent man who looked like the gunman when the innocent man got out of the car and walked toward the trunk, police thought he was reaching for a gun and thats when they shot him. Not knowing what was happening, he returned fire and called 911. It further confused officers because they didnt know if they were dealing with the shooter or victim. The city of ferguson, missouri is bracing for the grand juriary decision in the deadly shooting of 18yearold michael brown. On august 9th, brown was shot and killed by officer darren wilson. That shooting sparked weeks of violent protests. Now the grand jury is deliberating whether to indict officer wilson. There are reports that gun sales are on the rise and Business Owners are boarding up their shops. The grand jury has until january to issue a ruling. But the Prosecutors Office says it could come in midnovember. Four california gun storeowners say their First Amendment rights are being violated because an old California Law is now being enforced. The law from back in 1923 says gun storeowners cannot display or advertise handguns in windows or outside their shops. A San Joaquin County store was cited a few months ago. Now the gun storeowners are suing the state saying advertising is a form of speech protected by thing about of rights. Unless you walk up to the windows, you cant see what were selling. You may have an idea. When you are showcasing a product, you want to make sure that you can see exactly what it is. Attorneys say the case could hinge on whether guns of any kind are obscene and should be hidden from public view. Rifles and shot guns are not covered by the gun law and the gun storeowners admit it could take years to resolve their fight. So they say they will be forced to follow the current law until then. 7 46. Regulating drones. What the aclu wants in order to protect the public and the very important local meeting tonight. Ktvus pam cook is in the newsroom now. You have all of the details, pam. Yeah, the American Civil Liberties union of california is pushing for tighter regulations of unmanned drones. The aclu is releasing a report today that documents cases in which drones were bought with federal funds without public oversight. Now, the group wants local governments to pass laws that require public input before police are allowed to use this technology. The aclu is concerned about other swins technology such as license plate readers, Police Uniform cameras and databases. This report also comes out on the very same day as a public hearing in san jose to discuss unmanned drones. Police command will give a presentation to the San Jose Neighborhoods Commission tonight to be the potential uses of the drones. Thats after the department purchased a drone Surveillance System and has apologized for not getting public input first. He has more on the events that led up to this deadly crash and we understand you just talked with some friends of the victim as well. We did hear from jd nelson from the Sheriffs Department who said they are working hard to find the person who hit that child. This morning, the 4year old boy who fell more than 200 feet from a cliff in bodega bay, hes in intensive care at oaklands childrens hospital. Sebastian johnson was hiking with his family on bodega head monday afternoon. His dad said he was throwing rocks with his mother when he slipped and fell. His mother immediately called 911. Yesterday, we talked to the firefighter who rappelled down that cliff to rescue the child. Marco says he found sebastian face down in the rocks. He was crying. Well, thats when the firefighter said he shifted from being a First Responder into being a dad. Just trying to let him know his mom is up top waiting for him. I dont really know what hes comprehending. But doing the best i can to keep him with us. Well, sebastian is being treated for several injuries, including broken bones. He has scratches on his face. Firefighters are warning everybody be careful in that area. The rocks are loose and there are no guardrails out there. A coast guard helicopter, the one that responded to the call to rescue sebastian, its still grounded on the cliff out there. It wasnt able to take off also had mechanical problems. There are reports they may need a crane to go in there to bring in and remove that helicopter. So far, we dont know when that might happen. The San Francisco medical examiner is trying to identify a body found in San Francisco bay. It was spotted yesterday morning by a ferry boat the kaen between the Golden Gate Bridge and alcatraz island. The coast guard helped with the recovery. An official says it appears the person had been in the water for about a week. So far, police are not saying if the body is that of a missing tech worker from San Francisco who disappeared halloween night. Police in san mateo are warning people about a dangerous email that is falsely reporting a Child Predator in the neighborhood. Officers say its actually a scam email and when opened, it installs malware to steal users names, passwords and credit card numbers. According to police, the email claims to be announcing neighborhood Safety Information and tells recipients that a Child Predator has just moved into their area. Police say do not open the e mail or click on any links related to it. 8 06. Investigators looking into the tragic death of a baby gorilla at the San Francisco zoo reportedly are checking to see if a zoo worker did not follow safety rules. Now, 16monthold kabibi was crushed. Back to a story we first told you about at the top of the hour, Alameda County sheriffs deputies are still searching for a hitandrun driver who killed a 14yearold boy trying to cross the street in unincorporated san leandro. Witnesses say it happened during a police chase around 6 30 last night at the intersection of east 14th street and ashland avenue. They say the driver may have been wanted for a robbery at or near the Bayfair Center mall. They say he was trying elude officers when he ran a red light and hit the 14yearold boy in a crosswalk. Witnesses report seeing the boy fly over the suspects car and slam onto the pavement. Deputies never caught up with the car. The driver remains on the run this morning. Though a sheriffs spokesman said they are determined to catch him. The death of the teenager was a crushes blow to his friends. He grew up with these boys from 2 until yesterday. So yesterday my boys are in shock. These are my boys. One of his best friends. They are all like brothers. The victim has just been identified by the Sheriffs Department as 14yearold ivan cruz. The Sheriffs Office said deputies were trying to stop the car for reckless driving. Weve learned that counselors will be at San Leandro High School where cruz was a freshman. Happening today, a peace rally being held in richmond after eight shootings in the past week including one where a 16yearold boy was killed. Rodney friz year was a junior frazier was a junior and varsity basketball player at richmond high school. He was shot multiple times on friday night in front of his home. Police say five of the people injured were teenagers. Todays vigil begins at 5 00. Thats catfish, sturgeon, pet goldfish and carp. Those are some big fish. But today the poison will be pumped into the water and then the dead fish will be removed. Something has to be done to eradicate the fish that have been put in the lake that shouldnt be there. The carp that were this big and now they are this big. They are eating the vegetation. That could be a picture of this truck that flipped over carrying frozen turkeys early this morning. Its blocking the alcosta boulevard offramp from southbound 680. Theyve unloaded the turkeys. The truck is in position. They want to right the truck. The Fire Department is standing by just in case. A new truck is there with some of the turkeys they will be takenning taking away. The American Civil Liberties union of california is releasing a report today on drones. The aclu is pushing for tighter regulations of unmanned drones. The report documents cases where drones were purchased with federal funds without public oversight. [chanting] nurse bts wont nurses wont give up the nurses say they dont have the resources to properly care for patients. They are protesting the safeguards as well as staffing levels. Kaiser says it has trained 2800 temporary nurses for the strike. They are also canceling elective procedures. This is the third strike involving kaiser nurses in three years. Nurses in 14 other states and washington, d. C. Will join the california nurses in calling for a better ebola safeguard. In addition, to kaiser, picketing will take place at hospitals with dignity health, sutter, st. Josephs memorial care and university of california medical centers. The biggest rally here in california will be at noontime at the Federal Building in oakland. Thousands of nurses will demand federal action to mandate ebola safeguards for healthcare workers. As you mentioned about 15, 30 minutes ago we got confirmation that this probe along with the with that spacecraft that launched ten years ago successfully landed on the comet. Weve been joined with the astronomer here at chabot. Im sure you are excited. Very excite. This is great. Its the culmination of a ten year mission. Worked out well. We were concerned about one part of the spacecraft not working but it turned out it wasnt a problem. Reporter talking about the landing, the thrusters. The thruster that was supposed to hold it down while the harpoons and the augers anchored it to the comet. Apparently it worked fine without it. Reporter now that we know its landed, the next question, where do we go from here and when are we supposed to see more pictures, maybe some analysis . We expect to see a lot of pictures later on today. I believe at 10 00 our time, they are gonna do a whole presentation of whatever images they have. One of the first things that happens after it landed was it was gonna do some panoramic pictures. Pictures all around. You see what it looks like around the lander. Theres also another camera thats pointing down at the surface. So well see some images from that. And then going forward, there will be a lot of science being done. Anlising the competition of the comet, analyzing the structure, the chemicals that are coming off of it in the gas and so forth. Reporter what do we know about the comet . Theres gas on there already. Also evidence of water and ice. Right. Comets, we often call them dirty snowballs. A lot of ice with dust and rock embedded in the ice. As the comet gets closer to the sun, the ice turns into a gas. Its bended away from the comet. As it does so it releases the dust and rock and so for the. We already found out that the gas is composed of water i water, vapor, carbon dioxide. As we go forward well learn more. Composition representing the very beginning of our solar system. Reporter the boy has been identified as 14yearold ivan cruz, a freshman at nearby San Leandro High School and people have been have been leaving flowers. The crash happened after 6 00 last night in Alameda County near san leandro. It happened at the intersection of east 14th street and ashland avenue. Apparently, according to witnesses, cruz was in the crosswalk, possibly on a scooter when he was struck by a car, a speeding car that never even stopped. Witnesses say the driver kept going. Deputies continued their pursuit but never caught up with the car. The driver involved in the crash remains on the run this morning. And the death of had teenager was a crushing blow to his Close Friends. He grew up with these boys from 2 until yesterday. Until yesterday. My boys are in shock. These are my boys. One of his best friends. They are all like brothers. Reporter and deputies say they were trying to stop the car initially for reckless driving a short ways away from where the accident happened. At times during the chase, the car was driving on the wrong side of the road and thats when deputies decided to halt the pursuit but then it picked back up a short time later but the driver, again, managed to get away and is still on the run this morning. A spokesman for the Sheriffs Department told us they dont have any description though at this point of the car or the driver to put out to the public. This is the memorial set up here on the sidewalk on the side of east 14th street where there are flowers and candles and stuffed animals and a lot of friends of this 14yearold boy, a freshman in high school who was struck and killed by a car last night. We are told by a spokesperson that there will be grief counselors on hand at San Leandro High School and the school where he just graduated last year. Its slowing down on the way to the to the downtown oakland area. Thats northbound 880. Were also looking at the bay bridge toll plaza about a 25 to 30minute drive into San Francisco. I do want to mention that the turkey truck is still being cleared out of san ramon area. It will be closed until at least 10 00. The driver was only suffering minor injuries. Unfortunately, a lot of those turkeys, it looks like they will go to waste. Lets go to steve in the weather center. We do have mostly cloudy, cloudy skies here. Lows, 40s, 50s and 60s.
