Reporter good morning, dave. University officials have said that they want students and staff to speak up if they ever observe any racial intolerance. That was following the hate crime case that occurred last year on campus. But students say they are frustrated that they havent seen any administrators take action in this latest case. Students learned about these offensive comments they say were made in february by a member and donor of the Tower Foundation board. A Philanthropic Organization of the university. Students told the mercury news the member told Board Members i contribute to this university because these little latinos do not have the dna to be successful. Students we spoke to were smorked to hear about the allegations were shocked to hear about the allegations. I think that remark is ridiculous. We are learning more about an unusual bird problem holding up plans to tear down the eastern span of the bay bridge. Sea birds called double breasted birds are the cause of the delay. The clock is ticking to move the birds out since in february, they will start laying eggs. Once that happens, demolition would have to stop. So far, caltrans has tried to scare them off with expensive decoys, loud audio recordings and even install bird condos on the new bridge to try to lure them over there. Nets were also put on the old bridge to keep the birds away. The price tag, 30 million. Thats about 40 grand per bird. Caltrans argues it is actually saving tax payers money. If we dont do this, our penalties could far exceed the cost. So were in a balancing act. Demolition of the old span is expected to take until 2018. So no one expects this issue to go away any time soon. Well, today, the south bay volunteers will be holding a care Packing Party for troops and soldiers overseas. And on this veterans day one local artist is transforming military uniforms into art. Pam cook is in the studio now with this very personal and fascinating story. The more i read about it. The more i enjoy hearing about it. Drew wanted to tell veterans stories and help them work through their own memories. He created combat paper. Hes turning military uniforms into art and story telling. He takes uniforms, cuts them into piece, pounds them into pulp and makes paper. If you think for a moment sort of the distance, thats interesting to me. When the person received it how many times they stood in line and how many miles theyve walked in it and then got on a plane and was sent somewhere. Camerons paper is used to create books and art prints. He has a studio in San Francisco, hes also taken his workshop to 29 states and five countries. He holds paper making workshops so veterans can use their own uniforms warn in service to create works of arts. He says they can use the process of paper making to reclaim it as art. A fascinating way to use art and honor veterans as well. In london, check this out, a tribute to the 888,246 british and colonial solders who died in world war i.
