We begin with developing news from the peninsula. Police in san mateo are investigating a late night gun battle inside a home in a usually quiet neighborhood. Tara joins us live with the many questions surrounding this shooting. Reporter good morning. Why this home was targeted is really the question. Was this simply a Home Invasion gone wrong . Those are the answers the detectives are working on getting right now. You can see behind me the street is blocked off. Police say that a gun battle erupted at a home near South Norfolk last night. Officers found a 24yearold man who had been shot. He was the one who lives at the house. This shooting was not random. They woevent say how many shot they wont say how many shots were fired. Inside the house our officers are conducting their crime scene investigation. Going through the crime scene. At this point, most of the evidence has been collected and photographs have been taken. Now, again, Police Looking at other houses and locations in connection with this. They say that two people walked into a San Jose Hospital with gunshot wounds and one later died. Detectives are investigating whether there is a connection. The victim shot in the shoulder. He was treated at a hospital. His injury considered nonlife threatening. Investigators are looking into the cause of an Early Morning fire in richmond that burned two vans and damaged nearby buildings. Firefighters say the fire started around 2 30 this morning in the vans on south 9th street before spreading to a home and complex. Officials say people live in the vans but no one was in the vehicles or nearby home when the fire started. Forced the apartment complex to be evacuated and caused 150,000 in damage. San jose police say a body found near an emment tree school is officially a homicide case. And a suspect is in custody. Two days ago the victims husband found his wifes body inside a mini van. Investigators have identified that woman as 49yearold reina figueroaa. Police are expected to release more information about her death and a suspect later today. There could soon be more Police Officers on the streets of oakland. The man in charge of overseeing the Police Departments Court Ordered reforms is now expanding his mission. Former Baltimore Police commissioner Thomas Fraser says he is focused on bolstering the ranks of police force. Fraser is demanding quick action to boost recruiting officers. Today marks a somber time for the Highway Patrol. Exactly one year ago that chp officer youngstrom died. He was pulling over a driver for a routine traffic stop on 680 near alamo when the suspect opened fire. Another officer shot and killed the suspect. He had a wife and four children. Happening today, google is fighting back against a lawsuit that affects millions of email users. Attorneys will be in court today. Why they are trying to dismiss the case centered around privacy. I heard from Oakland Police who said no new developments this morning. Continuing to look for two different people. Were in the 9400 block of burch. This is where it went down yesterday evening. Two people in the hospital this morning suffering from gunshot wounds. Police are calling them suspects and not victims. Heres why. Lets show you what this neighborhood looked like yesterday afternoon. Multiple people called them to tell them shots have been fired. They found a person in the street suffering from gunshot wounds. Another person had been taken to the hospital. They started talking to witnesses who told them the two people shot had been part of a group of three who were in the process of robbing people when they were shot. Still unclear if the person who fired the shoots was a witness or robbery victim. If someone was defending themselves during a crime such as a robbery, we would like to talk to them. And would like to hear their side of the story. Thats part of the investigation. They are still looking for two people. The shooter and a third suspect who fled the scene. This is still unclear if that third suspect was also injured. Reporter back out here live, again, residential neighborhood where this all happened. A landlord in oakland said he was beaten and robbed by a man pretending to be interested in his property. Steven yu says he was attacked yesterday morning on 72nd and hamilton street. The man stole his money and cell phone and ran off. He chased after the man and saw him get into a car. I followed him all the way down there and he say he has a gun. So i keep a distance. I write down his cars license number. And police used that license plate number to track down the suspect a few blocks away. They arrested him after a short chase that ended in a crash. This Morning Police in oakland are investigating the tragic death of a two year old boy. Happened late yesterday afternoon on the embarcadero right next to interstate 880. The child was run over and killed in a parking lot while his mother sold fruit at a nearby stand. Witnesses say the driver of the pickup truck was a fruit store customer who never saw the little boy. Police say the driver is cooperating with investigators. Family members identified the two year old victim as rafael priseno. Well, if its taking you longer than normal to get aacross the bay bridge, you are not alone. Drivers may be stopping to enjoy the views. Some drivers are taking pictures and video while on the road. The chp wants drivers to know it is illegal to stop on the bridge for any reason other than emergency. And drivers can be ticketed. The novelty of the new bridge coming out of the tunnel seeing the big tower and the open views now that we dont have the close the sections. Seeing the bicyclists is throwing people off too. The metropolitan Transportation Commission says 127,000 vehicles traveled westbound tuesday on the first full day the bridge was open. That compared to 124,000 a year ago. Transit officials are turning their attention to a planned billion dollar make over for the western span. That make over calls for a 5 million bike path. Official say bike lanes would be needed on both side to keep the weight balanced. Adding extra lanes could make the span too heavy. Cyclists are enjoying the bay bridge. Pedestrians want them to slow down. The speed limit is 15 miles an hour. But pedestrians we spoke with say bicyclists are going much faster. You have this straight shot. If you are a kid you are going to do it. The chp says cyclists can be ticketed for speeding and start at 150. 7 36. We have continuing coverage of the rim fire burning in and around Yosemite National park. Investigators now say the fire was not caused by an illegal marijuana growing operation. Could take months now to determine the actual cause. The fire is 80 contained. Full containment is expected by september 20th. Air quality is starting to improve as firefighters make progress on that fire. Concerns about air pollution forced schools to cancel classes for a week. Its kind of been a cabin fever type thing. Weve been stuck at home. Kinda fun and sometimes im like i wish i was in school right now. The rim fire is also creating concerns about air quality in nevada. Some students there are being kept inside at recess. The berkeley city counsel is considering a grant to crack down on under age drinking. The grant would provide the Police Department with 75,000 in funding. The money would be used to pay for overtime for party patrol or investigate adults who buy alcohol for minors. There have been 13 alcohol related incidents since students moved back into the dorms. The bill is heading to governors desk. The state Senate Approved the bill yesterday. If the governor signs the bill, means people carrying a small amount of drugs could avoid more serious charge. Prosecutors can charge people with transporting even if the drugs are only intended for personal use. 7 38. The john mure Health System is selling off business. 26 stand alone patient lab service stations are included in the deal with Laboratory Corporation of america. That will result in the loss of 540 jobs. Although lab corp says it will take on 150 of those workers. The labs based in those hospitals are not part of this deal. A San Diego Program that offers homeless a one way bus ticket out of town is causing controversy. The program helped more than 117 Homeless People get off the streets. Supporters say tickets are only given to Homeless People with Family Members who have agreed to take them in and who are not too mentally ill to travel. Critics say the program is just moving the homeless to other cities. San Francisco City attorney is taking legal action over the practice of bussing Homeless People to other cities. Demanding nevada reimburse the costs of treating hundreds of homeless psychiatric patients bussed to San Francisco and other california cities in recent years. Threatened to file a Class Action Lawsuit if the city of San Francisco is not paid back. Also calling for new rules for bussing the homeless including making sure people have family in the city where they are being sent. State law makers are a step closer to extending carpool lane privileges. The legislature is working to extend carpool use through 2818 if even only the driver is in the car. Green and white is for hybrids, all electric and gas vehicles. Win approval from state law makers and be sent to the governor for signature. Transit center in San Francisco. The questions link subjects rather than test students separately on english, math and history. State superintendent is sponsoring the bill and says quote its time for a clean break that are out of date and out of sync with the work our schools are doing. Secretary of education says students are sleep deprived. That would allow young people to get more rest and be more alert during the school day. Many students in one east bay classroom liked the idea. If you slept in an hour or started school one hour later, how many of you would perform better in classroom. The 17yearold suspect is in jail and scheduled to appear in court tomorrow. Police say a fight broke out in the cafeteria yesterday morning. Deputies say it may have been gang related. The suspect is old enough to be tried as an adult. The director of prisons in highway highway is ordering a review of how kidnapper ariel castro could hang himself while in protective custody. Those women are not commenting about his death. And joseph naso is asking the jury that found him guilty of murder to spare his life. The penalty phase of the trial began yesterday morning. The 79yearold naso says he should not be sentenced to death because he cares about others. He added prosecutors were jealous of his opening statement. We noticed several shell casings in the street outside the home. Where are the suspects . Police say they are looking at two people who surfaced in san jose. We are aware there are two gunshot victims that walked into a hospital or appeared at a hospital. Theres gunshot victims they are trying to figure out what happened. And we have whats clearly a gun battle here in san mateo. Based on evidence inside the home, detectives are looking at other homes and locations with possible ties. Fremont Police Released photo s of a woman suspected in a snake scam. Officers say she went to two homes on august 24th, claiming to look for reptiles. Also has a pierced tongue with a ball on it. And theres another scam in fremont which specifically targets the south asian indian community. Police confirmed three victims of a telephone scam. Hundreds of rescued hen s are in new york after flying from the bay area in a private jet. Crates full of 1200 hens flew out of the Hayward Executive Airport yesterday. A private donor paid for them to fly back east where 9 sanctuaries and shelters are taking in the hens. They were rescued from egg production farm ask taken to animal sanctuaries. We work with egg farmers in california to offer an alternative to slaughtering the hens. This egg farmer called us up and says you can come out and pull as many hens as you can save. 1800 other hens will stay in california where they have put them up for adoption. The epa plans to update the public on efforts to restore a creek and protect trout. A 100 year old structure is being removed so 40 miles of creek can be opened to krout. Improvements will be made to protect against flooding. Supervisors have voted 4 to 1 to begin the process of pulling out of the state. Sacramento is ignoring their concerns. Other concerns include government bureaucracy, water rights and prevention fee. They hope to atact surrounding california counties and southern oregon. Police say they dont know who shot the men. This Morning Police in oakland are investigating the tragic death of a two year old boy in a traffic accident. Happened late yesterday afternoon on the embarcadero right next to interstate 880. The child was run over and killed in a parking lot while his mother sold fruit at a nearby stand. Witnesses say the driver of the pickup truck was a fruit store customer who never saw the little boy. Police say the driver is cooperating with investigators. Family members identify the victim as rafael perez prusenio. There could be soon more Police Officers on the streets of oakland. The man in charge of overseeing the Police Departments Court Ordered reforms is expanding his mission. Former Baltimore Police commissioner says hes focused on bolstering the ranks of oaklands short staff police force. Demanding quick action to boost recruiting efforts. And today marks a somber time for the Highway Patrol. Exactly one year ago 37yearold chp officer youngstrom died from gunshot wounds he suffered a day earlier. He was pulling over a driver for a routine traffic stop when the suspect opened fire. Another officer then shot and killed the suspect. Youngstrom had a wife and four children. We are following breaking news in the east bay. A body was found at an abandoned home. Claudine wong just arrived at the scene. Reporter i just talked to detectives on the scene. Were at 4th and b street. You can see the houses are boarded up. Most of the Police Activity is happening behind the homes. Thats where the body was found. About 2 00 this morning, a woman was down here with a friend. They were checking on another person who they found the body of this man on the back patio. Police came out here to process the scene. All they will tell us is this man is between 25 and 30 years old. He does have signs of trauma on his body but not sure if that was the cause of death. They do believe he died on the back patio of this home. And at this point his identity is still unclear. They are still trying to figure that out and may be from the area. They are not sure. One of the problems is because of these abandoned homes. Theres a field in the back area. In terms of witnesses and people who might have seen something when this happened, they are searching for those people now. They are looking at any information they can find. They have the crime scene techs processing the scene and right now waiting for the coroner to arrive. This is very early in this investigation. San jose police say a body found near an Elementary School is now a homicide case. And a suspect is in custody. Two days ago the victims husband found his wifes body inside the familys mini van. Investigators have now identified that woman as 49yearold reyna figeroa. Her family last saw her saturday morning when she left the home to runner ands. Police are expected to release more information about her death and the suspect later today. A San Diego Program that offers the homeless a one way bus ticket out of town is causing controversy. The program helped more than 117 Homeless People get off the streets. Supporters say tickets are only given to Homeless People to Family Members who agreed to take them in and not too mentally ill to traffic. Critics say it is just moving the homeless to other cities. Taking legal action over the practice of bussing Homeless People to other cities. Demanding nevada reimburse the cost of treating huvens of homeless psychiatric patients bussed to San Francisco and other california cities in recent years. Threatened to file a Class Action Lawsuit if the city is not paid back. Also calling for new rules for bussing the homeless including making sure people have family in the city where they are being sent. The john meur Health System is selling off businesses. 26 lab centers are included in the deal with Laboratory Corporation of america. That will result in the loss of 540 jobs. Lab corp says it will take on 150 of those workers. Two hospitals in walnut creek and concord and the labs in those hospitals are not part of the deal. If you are a regular commuter who drives across the bay bridge, youve noticed heavier traffic this week. And it could be weeks before the novelty wears off and commute times return to normal. Chp says drivers may be slowing down or stopping to enjoy the views on the span. Some are taking pictures and video while on the road. Wants drivers to know its illegal to do that or stop on the bridge for any reason other than emergency and drivers can be ticketed. The novelty of the new bridge seeing that big tower, seeing the open views now that we dont have the closed sections any more. The bicyclists and pedestrians on the path, thats probably throwing people off too. The metropolitan Transportation Commission says 127,000 vehicles traveled westbound tuesday on the first full day the bridge was open. That compares to 124,000 weeks a year ago. Ofshing 24 hour service on the recent closure caused bart to fall behind on maintenance. Bart Officials Say it will take at least a week to catch up on maintenance from round the clock service. Thats about 7800 extra hours of work. More than a dozen rail cars are out of service due to the maintenance. Janine is live naer South Cypress avenue. A bus hit a car there. What can you tell us . Reporter yeah, you can see this pretty bad crash here behind me where a mini van and a school bus collided. There were four kids in that school bus headed to lynn haven elementary. They were special needs kids. Theyve been transported to the hospital. Although with minor injuries. Inside the mini van you see there there was a family. A mother, a father and a child. The mother is pregnant. Shes being transported to the hospital. The father is being put there on the stretcher. Were told minor injuries. They have a little boy with them, i think about 3 or 4 years old. Police are trying to get relatives to take care of him. Police are watching over him. But the good news is everybody just sustained minor injuries. The california Highway Patrol is investigating this accident because it does involve a school bus. They have this one block area blocked off to traffic at least partially in the eastbound lanes. We dont know who is at fault here but a tow truck is just arriving. The chp and police are asking people to avoid the area. Four children in the school bus, they are said to be okay. And then a family in the mini van. Everybody with just minor injuries. Tara has been following this story since 4 30 this morning. She joins us live with new information. Reporter three men barged into his sons home anding the wife at knife point. The husband showed up and the gun battle began. They say they got this all on videotape. And in 15 minutes, police are going to be coming out here to give us a briefing here. Again, this happened last night around 11 30 at a home on lodia avenue. When police arrived, found a 24yearold man shot in the shoulder. Investigators wont say how many shots were fired but several shell casings outside the home. Police say they are looking at two people who walked into a San Jose Hospital. One of them later died. Police also have other leads. Officers are exploring the different facts of the crime and whether there are other houses or locations. The suspects or other persons we may need to contact. Were trying to unravel all details now. Again, the victim was shot in the shoulder and treated at the hospital. His wife is okay were told. Were just getting breaking news concerning the ongoing Hunger Strike at california prisons. More of that when we come back. 8 53. We have breaking news. California prison Officials Say inmates have ended their nearly two month Hunger Strike to protest the prison systems isolation policies. Two state legislatures promised to hold hearings on inmates complaints. The gang leaders are often held for decades in isolation. More than 30,000 inmates have been refusing meals. The number swindled to 100 including 40 who had been on strike since july 8th. Also happening today theres a new effort to raise postal rates. The washington political newspaper is reporting that the postal board of governors will meet today to begin emergency process to raise prices. They will cite financial distress. Increase from 46 cents to now 49 cents. This consists of a two sent jump on top of the 1 cent inflation jump. We want to check in with sal. News chopper 2 is over the scene of the school bus crash. Kind of scary to hear at first. They had minor injuries. Hit the mini van. Not sure who hit who. Obviously, pretty violent crash. Some people were taken to the hospital. The people in the mini van. The area is blocked off. You can see they are there along with police. And again, i want to say there were no major injuries in this crash. Some people were taken to the hospital. Its a good area to avoid. Right next to interstate 280. It is not affecting traffic. Some of the local streets are going to be jammed up for a time to come. Lets take a look at the bay bridge. This is a nice surprise westbound coming up to the toll plaza. It emptied out somewhat into the city. Theres a bus on the screen. I love when that happens. But then again im 12 years old at heart. Go away, bug. This is 101. Traffic is going to be busy off the san mateo bridge. Driving down to the airport. It is not a bad drive. And also this morning were looking at the San Francisco commute via our map system. 280 is slow out of daily city. 101 is slow from about third street up to caesar chavez. Lets go to steve. We want to go back to the breaking news we saw moments ago. School bus crash involving a mini van as well. Luckily no major injuries this morning from this crash. Looks like a violent crash. They are removing the vehicles. Four special needs kids were in that bus at the time. They are doing okay. Another family was in the mini van as well. She was taken by ambulance as well. They are doing okay as well. Obviously, pretty scary situation. Appears everyone is doing okay. Sal is telling people to avoid the area. And we did hear from janine that the ch p is investigating this. But because the school bus is involved, chp will be investigating. Probably on that scene for a long time. Best to avoid that area. The good news is only minor injuries. Certainly a frightening morning for the students involved and the family. Once again, we will be continuing to follow that story. Certainly a very busy morning.
