Mid80s in concord yesterday. 92 for today. Oakland, you are following suit. A couple of degrees warmer than yesterday and san jose, 85 for the second half of the afternoon. So temperatures around the bay, 3 to 6 degrees warmer than what we had on thursday. Inland, 5 to 7 degrees. Thats a notal jump in temperatures for the second half of your day. This morning we are waking up with low clouds inside the bay, along the coastline. Half moon bay bay is reporting visibility anywhere from one to two miles. Napa down to a quarter mile with the visibility. Its very patchy in nature which makes it hazardous as you get out the door. Be aware of it. As you get inland, were machine, concord, livermore mostly sunny, concord, livermore, mostly sunny skies. That will help lead to a big warmup. The breeze is onshore but very week. So we cant rely on the delta breeze to help cool off those areas for the second half of the day. Were looking at mid50s to 60s. Again, partly cloudy to mostly sunny depending upon where you are at. Low 60s for the coast, upper 60s around the bay and then mostly sunny skies away from the coastline by lunchtime. 65 for the coast, mid70s around the bay and low 80s inland. Were looking at traffic that looks pretty good out there compared to yesterday, as we look at the commute. Lets take a look at westbound interstate 80. You can see that this is butch better than yesterday. Yesterday, we had Traffic Building up all the way into the albany hill and today theres plenty of room there. I just have a feeling that after yesterday and maybe people just plan for a fourday weekend anyway. It may be busier trying to get out of town heading away from the weekend. That may be a bad guess. People may be out of town. You can tweet me thinking what you think is gonna happen. As you head out to the high rise of the san mateo, that looks good. If you are driving in the livermore valley, westbound 580 traffic does move well getting out to the area. Back to the desk. And we begin with breaking news from san jose where an investigation is underway into two separate Police Shootings. Police say both shootings stem from armed robberies. The first happened at king and wilshire streets. The second at san carlos and meridian. Thats where we find janine de la vega where police are still on scene. Janine . Reporter claudine, homicide detectives are here on the scene. Nobody has died but thats sort of standard procedure whenever there is an officerinvolved shooting thats happened. Theres some shoe and debris in the roadway left over here on san carlos. Were here near lincoln. Thats left over from the suspect and the shooting that took place. This started as an Armed Robbery at a safeway at san carlos and meridian. Shortly after, people in the area called 911 after seeing a man waving a gun nearby. Officers realized it was the same incident, the same suspect, so they came to the scene. They say they were threatened and one of the officers fired toward the suspects. The suspect was not hit or injured by the gunfire. The officer is okay. The first officerinvolved shooting occurredden on the east side occurred on the east side. A woman was robbed by gunpoint by two car in a white car in downtown san jose. Officers spotted the car at mckee and king. A passenger then got out, ran away, then the car sped off and crashed close by. Police say the driver then tried to run over an officer who is on foot with his car and thats when the officer fired because he was in fear for his life. The victim was hit once, taken to the hospital, police say the partner, still on the loose. The suspect that led the vehicle is still outstanding. Officers and investigators are still trying to determine his identify tie and his description at identity and his description at this time. They just happened to have happened between hours between each other and they both started at armed robberies. Reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. Well, a new crimefighting plan for San Jose Police is causing some controversy. Mayor chuck reed and a councilman proposed a plan to expand the force by 200 officers. It would fill current vacancies and restore wages by at least 10 . The offer comes in the midst of a bitter standoff between city hall and the Officers Union over wages and pension reform. One union member dismissed the plan saying its full of empty promises. Were keeping an i on the bay bridge project an eye on the bay bridge project. Kron struction crews are working around the clock this Holiday Weekend. The clock is ticking toward the opening of the new bay bridge. We have Team Coverage of the bridge shutdown. Sal, of course, is watching everything, as you normally do on a friday morning, watching the commute. Christien kafton is keeping an eye on the busy b. A. R. T. Trains. Lets start first with Tara Moriarty. You are at the bridge construction headquarters. And you just got an update. Reporter we spoke to a bay bridge spokesperson and he says all of the asphalt up to the bay bridge toll plaza has been removed and they are beginning the paving process. So thats pretty exciting and then about an hour, well be getting an update from caltrans, from some people who were last on the bridge. Lets take a look at some pictures of the new eastern span. The progress thats being made, about 3,000 truckloads or 84 tons of ripped up asphalt listen carted off as 56 tons of new asphalt will be brought in. Crews are installing a new drainage system and striping a path to the span. If everything goes off without a hitch, theres a chance the bridge could open earlier than Tuesday Morning. But Officials Say dont bank on it. All were saying is were on schedule. We dont want anyone to plan for any other day other than 5 00 a. M. Tuesday. If it looks like we can open early, well let everyone know. Reporter the chp says commuter traffic should be lighter today but they expect the crunch will last a little bit longer than yesterday. It should probably go until about 10 00 this morning officers say. Overall, the chp says traffic wasnt too bad yesterday. The holiday traffic, a little less predictable. Some people planned to stay because they knew that the bay bridge would be closed. But others may brave it. Well keep you posted throughout the day. But later this morning, caltrans will give the media a tour of the work going on on the western span. Its taking advantage to do Maintenance Work and inspections hon the part of the bridge that connects Treasure Island from San Francisco. More than a dozen b. A. R. T. Stations are open 24 hours a day during the with bay bridge closure. This is the la fayette station. B. A. R. T. Says there has been a huge jump in ridership during the first day of the bridge shutdown. Coming up at 7 30, well have a live report on just how the commute is going this morning. The San Francisco bay ferry is adding more trips all weekend from alameda, oakland and vallejo to San Francisco. The golden gate ferry which runs from the city to larks spur is also adding service. Food Service Workers at Oakland International airport, they are on strike. They are protesting unfair labor practices. Theyve been in contract talks for the past year. They are demanding better way and benefits. Now, todays protests is part of a nationwide labor movement. Just yesterday, several bay area fastforward workers went on strike, demanding better pay. A monthlong protest at the Downtown Berkeley post office has ended. For the last 30 days protesters have been in a tent city in front of that historical building. But wednesday night, police told protesters to leave and they removed the tents. The order came after growing concerns of criminal activity relating to that encampment. Protesters were trying to save the post Office Property from being sold. But an appeal filed on tuesday to stop the sale was thrown out by the postal regulatory commission. The bay area has seen home values rebound quickly and now thats helping about 150,000 homes whose mortgages had been underwater. At the end of june, 18 of all homes with mortgages were under. Thats a big improvement from march where almost 356,000 homes had mortgages that were bigger than the homes value. The bay area is getting out of negative equity, its reported, than any other part of the country. All right. The Washington Post published details of the cias budget it says came from snowden. The black budget is the secret portion of the federal budget that contains funding on intelligence funding and gathering. The budget also shows how the cia has been transformed into a pair of military force with control for an increasingly large fleet of drones. The top u. S. Official says he will release figures every year on how many court orders are issued and how many people are targeted because of them. The director says this is part of president obama call for more transparency to convince americans they are not being spied on. It follows evolutions after the leaks by Edward Snowden. A new study shows a majority of scientists are getting less federal help for their research than they were three years ago. Nearly 20 of scientists are now considering moving overseas to other country that provide more funding to continue their research. 7 15. The Obama Administration announcing a major change in the way it deals with Marijuana Prosecutions in those states where its legal for recreational or medical use. The Justice Department says it will not try to block new state laws in colorado and Washington State that legalize Recreational Use of marijuana. And the department will no longer target medical marijuana dispensaries as long as they dont sell to minors and the profits dont go to organized crime. In recent years, federal agents have raided medical marijuana dispensaries here in california. The Vallejo Police department has returned a van load full of marijuana to a Marijuana Dispensary owner who was raided by the police last year. Mathew shotwell was arrested during a raid in february of last year but the charges were shopped for a lack of evidence. Well, yesterday, the police under a court order returned the marijuana to him. Shotwell claims that marijuana is damaged after being held in police storage since february. All of these bags after bags after bags of weed, all of these ruined. Shotwell was once a star of weed country. He says he had about 9,000 clients before the raid now. Now hes planning to stew vallejo for his losses. Alamedas groundbreaking law on drug proposals can go on as scheduled. This would require programs to fund or operate programs that take back prescription drugs that are expired in the company. We have two tales to tell. A ridge of High Pressure in control for our ridge today. A trough from the gulf of alaska will be dropping closer to the coast as we progress through your weekend. Lets start with this here. This is gonna be strengthening. We have moisture wrapping around the High Pressure. This wont reach us today but eventually i think well see high clouds reach us today and it will come for the second half of the weekend. This in addition to the system here. This also migrates our way. The two will commingle and bring us an increase in clouds and cooler conditions. Says its too early to tell how today will shape up. Today so far is busier than a usual friday. But not quite as busy as yesterday. The commute is starting to pick up. We have and a noticeable uptick in activity in the last half hour. You can see theres plenty of passengers on their way to San Francisco. Its too early to say. But there are some indications that today might not be as busy. We talked to one commuter braving. Possible crowds today after telecommuting yesterday. I didnt take b. A. R. T. Yesterday. I knew it would be a mess. I just decided to stay home and work from home. My husband was on a 6 00 a. M. Train and he said it was packed. That was a good indication to sit tight and stay home. Reporter now, earlier we checked in with the casual carpool. We did not see anyone, no drivers. No one waiting for a ride. That may change as the morning develops. We want to give you a look at the situation from newschopper2 giving us a birds eye view on the progress as crews tear down the old bay bridge. That hole right there, that used to be the deck of the eastern span. Crews really wasted no time getting that section of the roadway demolished. They cant use dynamite because of safety and environmental rules so that old bay bridge is being torn down piece by piece to avoid a collapse. As crews get ready to tear down the old bay bridge. Theres questions about the dangers of the scurve. The chronicle obtained documents from a wrongful death lawsuit. In 2009, a hayward truck driver died. His truck crashed and then plunged 200 feet down below. Caltrans managers say they did not authorize a sharper curve that was approved by a lower level engineer. The chronicle reports caltrans did authorize portable concrete rails despite the risk of cars hurdling over it. Without admitting any responsibility, caltrans settled the lawsuit for 700,000. New this morning, the Police Station in alameda was evacuated because of a bomb square. A bomb says he found what he thought was a pipe bomb. Last night around 9 30, he decided to drive what he found to the Police Station and turn it over to the police. Well, the police immediately evacuated their building and they called in a bomb squad team. They determined it was not an explosive. Due to the location, obviously at the Police Department andle in looking at the device and in looking at the device initially not knowing what it was, we evacuated the area for public safety. Police are now investigating this incident. They also warn you, dont pick up any suspicious devices. Leave it where it is. Then call the police. A bomb square also forced the evacuation of the Solano County courthouse in vallejo yesterday. A City Employee got a call from someone threatening to blow the courthouse up. The courthouse was evacuated. Court employee did notice a suspicious small blue bag outside. It was in a plant. Investigators say they found an old rusty gun inside. The courthouse was cleared and it was returned to business. A south bay elementary schoolteacher is facing child pornography charges this morning. San jose police have arrested 39yearold Brian Westfall after finding 2,000 images of child pornography on his computer. Hes worked as a substitute teacher in the Oakgrove School district since 2006. Detectives say theyve found no evidence of any lewd behavior with any students. Police in concord now confirming the arrest of a San FranciscoPolice Officer. We first told you about the arrest of 37yearold san Richard Hastings the iii. The officer is accused of molesting a 15yearold boy. Detectives are arresting lewd and lascivious acts. Hes suspended without pay. There are new questions of a man killing two people at a San Francisco jewelry mart. Bare barry white is accused of killing those two workers. He was employed where he earned 66,000 over a decade. But the paper says he did not qualify to work there because he was not a student. The Health Department is investigating the matter. California fish and wildlife wardens say theyve busted a major abalone poaching ring that stretches from sacramento to oakland. 13 people were arrested in that poaching sweep yesterday. The raids were at oakland, san leandro, fairfield, alameda and sacramento. They caught abalone off the coast and sold is illegally. They face poaching, conspiracy and for some of them perjury charges. Patrols have increased at uc davis after an apparent hate crime. Police found park facilities and parked cars damaged. They also found a racial slur inside one of the buildings. This was a shock to some students. Not good at all. It really is a big issue. I was really surprised. The uc chancellor issued a memo to the Campus Community posted it on the schools website. It says in part now, no act of hate will be tolerated. The school is not saying if theres enough information yet to lead to an arrest. Reportedly city college of San Francisco is not the only California Community college with an accreditation problem. The San FranciscoBusiness Times says as many as 20 Community Colleges statewide may also be in trouble. The chancellor of Community Colleges in california talked about this issue yesterday but didnt say which ones were involved. City college could possibly use the accreditation next july because of alleged financial mismanagement. A bill designed to improve the safety of limousines goes before a committee in sacramento. Jerry hill from san mateo introduced the legislation following the deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge that killed five women back in may. The bill would require limousines to have two five extinguishers and nearly inspections. A big rig driver it was drled is at fault that killed a cyclist in San Francisco. Greg suhr says the case is being turned over to the District Attorneys Office who could file charges against the driver. The 24yearold cyclist was killed at 6th and folsom streets on august 14th on her way to work. A man is due in Marin County Court on charges that he stabbed his mother to death. Prosecutors have filed murder charges against the man. Investigators say he killed his mother, rosa, last friday night before capturing a bus to San Francisco. A Park Police Officer shot and killed him when he allegedly lunged at him with a knife. A car crash happened at 7 00 at 88th and bancroft. Witnesses say a car crashed several other cars, pushing some of them into the front yard of a home. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt. 7 39. Classmates of a Danville High School student killed in a car crash this week are spending time honoring the memory of their friend. This was last night. About 200 people at a vigil remembering 1yearold robert orlando. He was killed monday night. The car he was riding in slammed into a tree near his home. The day before the beginning of his senior year at San Ramon Valley high school. I tried to reach out to many people as i i try to reach out to many people as i can and be as kind as i can now. Some students from rival schools wore the same colors as a tribute to order from the school. A public memorial is tuesday, 3 00 p. M. At the saint joan saint joan of arc parish, in san ramon. Several people are coming together to help people recover from a devastating grass fire in fairfield. That fire destroyed two homes and damaged several others. It started tuesday afternoon on the side of interstate 80. While cleanup has just begun, a debate is heating up over who is responsible. The city says the property lines run right up to the wall but the area is clearly fenced off and the homeowners say theyve been told to keep out. Well, new information from the fire lines in yoes in yosemite and how the fire could affect your Holiday Weekend plans. Its one of thebicy one of the busiest weekends for tahoe. Well take a look at the rim fire. Were heating it up for your friday afternoon. I expect today to be the hottest day of the week. Consumer spending was up in july but they expected it to go up a little bit more than that. We have concerns over syria. That seems to be affecting the market. Well keep an eye on it for you all morning long. They are making progress in fighting the rim fire near yosemite. Its now 32 contained. Its burned more than 200,000 acres and it is one of the largest wildfires in california history. Some of the evacuation orders theyve been lifted now in that area and despite the fire most of Yosemite National park will be open this Labor Day Weekend. Well, the smoke from the rim fire is traveling 100 miles away to lake tahoe. Pam cook is in the newsroom now talking about how this is affecting visitors and the businesses up there, pam. Yeah, Labor Day Weekend is usually a pretty busy time in lake tahoe. But the fire in yosemite may be changing that. You can see the smoke as you drive into the lake tahoe area. Typically, a beautiful view, the area known for its Crystal Clear skies and Crystal Clear water, however, the beaches have been dedeserted in most parts. A lot of Hotel Cancellations have been issued. But for a lot of people it was too late to cancel like for this woman who came from minnesota. Stay indoors more. You dont want to do that in lack tahoe. We were gonna go up to heavenly and unfortunately we have to change it. The typical Labor Day Weekend plans for lake tahoe still on for now, including a big paddle wheel boat race that takes place every Labor Day Weekend and fireworks scheduled for sunday night. Now, smoky skies, Poor Visibility and that unhealthy air quality last weekend did force the cancellation of an annual lake in the sky airshow. That usually sends vintage airplanes up in tahoe. But that was canceled. Well keep an eye on the area in tahoe. Pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. Law enforcement agencies across the bay area are preparing to crack down on drivers leaving town for the Holiday Weekend. The focus this year will be on drunk drivers and officers from the chp and local agencies will start hitting the road about 6 00 tonight. Last year the chp says 35 people were killed on california roads during the labor day holiday, half were not wearing seat belts. There were also more than 1300 dui arrests statewide. And many people in the bay area will be helding to the air force or hitting the roads for the weekend. So aaa predicting almost 4 million californians will out there together traveling. Thats a 6 increase compared to last year. About 3. 1 million california ups will drive. A little more than 500,000 plan to travel by air. Lets talk about gas prices. Those prices up jed nearly 2 cents a gallon overnight. Thats the biggest price increase in six weeks. Analysts say well likely be paying even more for gas before the long Holiday Weekend is over and thats because gas stations are getting more fuel that was produced as crude oil prices started to head upward. Crude was selling for the highest price in two years on fear of a u. S. Attack on syria and escalating violence in egypt. 7 47. That leads us right to sal and our commute. How are we looking. I know you are keeping an eye on the east shore. Yesterday, at this time, clave and claudine , dash dave and claudine, the east shore freeway was pretty slow. Its not as bad as it was yesterday. I dont want to mislead you. There is a little bit of slow traffic to deal with getting down to the macarthur maze. I have a feeling it will be that way until the reopening of the bay bridge sometime on late monday or early tuesday. Lets take a look at the san mateo bridge. That has improved quite a bit as you drive over to the high rise. There are no major problems getting out to highway 101. Likewise for the dumbarton bridge. Weve been looking at the commute in the east bay. Its been a nice one even on 238, there is a little bit of slow traffic on northbound 880 but southbound 880 has been pretty good from hayward to fremont. Public transportation has been doing pretty well. B. A. R. T. Handling the load. Caltrain and muni not reporting any delays either. Lets go to rosemary. Giving you a view of low clouds resting over San Francisco. You can see weve got the hills above it. So this marine layer has is being pinned closer to the ground. Because of it were dealing with patchy dense fog in some cases. Im not seeing a whole lot of it. Anywhere from santa rosa to napa, we have visible down to a halfmile, a mile in some cases. Half moon bay reporting a mile visibility at times. Its very patchy out there. Be careful as you get out the door this morning. As this ridge of High Pressure squashes the marine layer, patchy drizzle along the coastline and for San Francisco this morning. This ridge of High Pressure will lead to a warmup for the second half of our day. Well get into the 90s, above the see annal average for seasonal average for this time of year and then we cool down. Temperatures will begin to trail off on saturday and then cooler on sunday with an increase in clouds. The ridge of High Pressure and the flow around it pulling in some some subtropical moisture. It will begin to commingle with this system dropping out of the gulf of alaska. The two combined with bring us the cooldown, increase in high clouds, maybe a spotty shower or two by sunday night into monday. Picking it up tomorrow morning, because today, mostly sunny skies away from the coast and warm conditions. But tomorrow, notice weve already got some of that moisture pulling up. Not as far north as the bay area. But as we get into the afternoon, we could see a few high clouds. Sunday morning still there, just right around san jose at this point. Beginning to migrate a little bit closer. Talking about tahoe, too. A cooling trend expected in addition to the smoky conditions. And then thats zapped away. As we get into monday morning, the possibility of a little bit of drizzle. It wont ruin your plans. I want to mention it because it is a Holiday Weekend. Giving you a look at where were seeing the low clouds this morning, banked up against the coastline. I think well see this clear away by midmorning. Well have mostly sunny skies. But i dont believe it it will have an impact for your delta region and our main cities will heat up if you are used to the delta breeze helping to cool you down in the afternoon. We had a lot of complaints over on twitter and facebook about it. Today were not seeing that many complaints and were seeing better traffic which i think theres definitely a correlation there. There is a look at the hayward to fremont commute. That traffic moves along nicely. Weve been checking in with b. A. R. T. , caltrain and muni and they are doing well. Back to the desk. Were beginning with breaking news in the south bay. Two separate Police Shootings in san jose this morning. They are being investigated. The first one happened at north king road and will shire street. The second one was at san carlos and meridian. Janine de la vega is at the second location and the police are still searching for the clues. Reporter they are. They are still gathering evidence. You can see police have san carlos blocked off for a three plok area from sunol to race street. They are investigating a robbery that happened down the street and the shooting where you can see debris and clothing thats still laying there in the middle of the street with some evidence markers. Police were called to the safeway at san carlos and meridian after a man had just robbed the store. At the same time, a man in the area was seen waving a gun. Police realized it was the same suspect. Officers asked him to drop his weapon. He did not. So an officer fired. But he missed and the suspect ended up surrendering. Three hours before that, at around 1 00, officers responded to another robbery in downtown san jose where a woman was robled at gunpoint by two men in a white car. Police spotted the suspects car, a passenger in it, got out and ran away. The car sped off and crashed near king and alum rock on the east side. Police say that that is when the suspect threatened an officer. The driver proceeded to go ahead and attempt to run over the officer. The officer discharged the firearm striking the driver of the vehicle. The driver was taken to a hospital. Reporter the suspect was hit at least once. Hes at the hospital being treated. We know he went through surgery. At this point, is condition is still unknown. His accomplice who fled the car earlier is still at large. At this point, we dont have a suspect description. Back out here live again, you are looking where you see all of those evidence markers. Police still have to gather all of that. They are being very meticulous about this because its an be officerinvolved shooting even though to no even though no one was hurt. Its unclear if its beer that he stole at the safeway. Were still waiting to hear back from police to get confirmation on that. A very busy morning. These two officerinvolved shootings were not related. Its just a equips dense they started coincidence they started as robberies and happened within hours of each other. Back to you. The new Crime Fighting tool is causing controversy. They want to add 200 Police Officers positions and this offer comes in the middle of a bitter standoff between city haul and the police Officers Union over salary and pension reform. One union member dismissed the plan saying it is full of empty promises. 8 05. We want to take you out to the News Conference being held by caltrans to get an update on the been progress. Lets listen in. You can get the latest information and you will get that latest footage and our own when we go out in the field. Lets start at the tunnel of the construction. The paving on the upper deck westbound is complete. On the lower deck there are about they are about 60 done and expect to have the paving of concrete done by later today towards the end of today. This is a special concrete that has a binder mixed into it. Its a thin layer of concrete. It adheres to the road surface. Lets move to the demolition. Were demolishing a 1,000foot section of the original westbound approach that we can put in that temporary connector for the bike and pedestrian paths. So that at noon on tuesday, the public can start to use it. So far they have removed 90 of the concrete from the roadway of that 1,000foot long section. They are about halfway removing some of the smaller steel sections. They expect to wrap that work up later tomorrow and by stunned morning, they expect the demo by sunday morning they expect the demolition to be complete. They expect to start the staging of those wood temporary sections for the bike path and those should start going in as soon as later tomorrow. At the toll plaza, grinding is complete on the westbound site. Its all paving working if on. On the eastbound site, grinding is wrapping up. They are paving on that side. That work is going well as well. Hat at this time i would like to bring in the Vice President from flatiron. They are doing the work at the toll plaza with the grinding and paving and he will be able to give you and update as well. Thank you. We hit a pretty important milestone last night. All of the grinding was done on the westbound direction. Eastbound is wrapping up on the grinding and asphalt removal. In a couple of hours, well be done with all of the asphalt paving. On the westbound direction just before the toll plaza, we have the stripers on out there right now doing the layout for the toll plaza. And within a couple of hours well start to put down permanent striping in that direction. Paving will continue all day today, tonight and tomorrow. To finish off the westbound direction and then again well be starting on the eastbound direction. So as of right now, everything is going right well. Roughly about 10 to 15 minutes per segment. So we didnt see too much in terms of congestion. We definitely saw a lot less than we were expecting over the bay area. Today the commute is going very well. We expect the commute to be a friday light commute. We expect people to be on their way to their labor day destinations. You might see increased congestion across other roadways as meal people go to their destinations. We have chp onhappened. Weve in a maximum enforcement period in which all of your officers are deployed for the holiday. This is to make sure we reduce the dui related incidents and speeding incidents. When you do get to the san mateo bridge, its a nice looking drive head out to the high rise. It was very crowded heading out to the foster city. Were looking at the south bay. The commute here has been looking good, up to the lower peninsula. A little slowing here and there. Its obvious some people are either telecommuting or taking the day off. Lets go to rosemary. How about a heatup in store . I see signs of the warmup and a beautiful view here. Weve got the low cloud deck just setting on the bay. The marine layer right about 1,000 feet and the marine layer clouds, you can see below that as well. So those low clouds just inside the bay along the coast have spilled into some areas of santa rosa and napa. Has created patchy dense fog. As we get through the morning hours, it will burn away to mostly sunny skies. It has to do with this ridge of High Pressure thats building our way for your friday. That is going to drive our temperatures up over yesterdays highs. Also put some arrows so you can see the motion coming into california drawing in some subtropical moisture. Now, eventually this is going to give way to cooler conditions here. But this system that will be making its way closer to the coast as we get into the weekend. But we will sort of be sandwiched between the two. As this ridge of High Pressure sends that subtropical moisture into california. The system out of the gublg will continue to gulf of alaska will continue to cool and bring the moisture air as well. The two combined could bring a very slight chance at maybe some drizzle monday morning. Were still a few days out. Its only worth mentioning because its a Holiday Weekend. Outside the doors, we have patchy drizzle and the fog. The ridge of High Pressure is pinning the fog closer to the ground but cre tating the drizzle. Fairfield, 12 miles an hour. So its not completely good but once you pass zanker road, it gets better for the drive into the drive. Weve been looking at the san mateo bridge. Yesterday at this time, it was very slow. Now it looks look like. It looks like a normal day on the san mateo bridge. Im looking at the overcast flight delays getting into sfo more than an hour. Check with your carrier. Were looking at contra costa county. Much lighter than usual. 680 looks good as you drive from concord to walnut creek. Publy transit, b. A. R. T. , caltrain and muni, no delays. At 8 33. We want to go live to ktvus Tara Moriarty, who has just finished listening to a Caltrans Press conference with the latest on the construction. Tara . Reporter this is the highest level of ridership that b. A. R. T. Had, the third highest in history. More than 475,000 people choosing to ride b. A. R. T. Instead of hitting the freeways as a result of this closure being in effect. Now, construction as far as that goes, we did receive a little bit more information regarding that, the grinding, the chopping up of the asphalt thats been completed and they are pouring the new pavement right now. Crews are installing a new drainage system there and striping a path to the new span. The stretch to the old span, thats coming down for that temporary bike trail. And at the other end, workers are preparing a connection to the yerba buena tunnels which will eliminate the scurve. Lets start at the tunnel. The paving on the upper deck, westbound is complete. On the lower deck, they are about 60 done and they expect to have that paving of concrete done by later today. Reporter the chp expects traffic to be lighter today than was yesterday. Thats what sal has been staying all morning. He says we might see an increase this morning or Late Afternoon or evening when people take off for those vacation destinations. As expected, the major choke points where the areas are in relation to the detours in San Francisco, the san mateo bridge, the richmond, and the golden gate bridge, those points saw some increase in travel time. Roughly 10, 15 minutes per segment. Reporter now, if everything continues to go off without a hitch, there is a chance the bridge could open earlier than Tuesday Morning, perhaps late on monday. We can definitely tell you that today certainly feels a lot lighter than yesterday. Theres still some passengers making their way onto b. A. R. T. At the la fayette station here. Although yesterday was the third busiest day in b. A. R. T. History, b. A. R. T. Says its still too early to tell exactly how today will be shaping up. Now, we have some new video from the San Franciscobound train we rode about an hour ago, you can see the crowds are nothing really compared to yesterday. Weve seen some riders with large bags this morning looking like they are making the most of this Holiday Weekend and heading out of town on their way to sfo. There may be others who are not working today or who are telecommuting, hoping to turn this Labor Day Weekend into a fourday weekend. Riders say they definitely noticed a difference. Its kind of crazy yesterday. Reporter the look that you just saw compared to yesterday, it was standingroom evenly, packed trains going into only, parked trains going into San Francisco. Investigations are underway into two separate bomb scares in the bay area. One suspicious device forced the evacuation of the alameda Police Station overnight. A man says he discovered what he thought was a pipe bomb. He decided to drive it to the Police Station. Officers immediately evacuated the building and then called in the ordinance team. They determined that it was not dangerous. Due to the location obviously at the Police Department and in looking at the device not knowing what it was, we evacuated the area for public safety. Police say it may have been obvious but they warn people not to touch or pick up suspicious devices. Leave it where it is or call the lep or call for help. A City Employee got a call from someone threatening to blow the courthouse building up. 150 people had to be evacuated. A Court Employee smoe nied a small bag outside at a plant. It was an old firstaid kit with a rusted gun. A south bay elementary schoolteacher faces charges of child pornography. San jose Police Arrested 39 yearold Brian Westfall of a they say they found 2,000 images of child pornography on htion computer. They say hes workled as a substitute teacher in san joses oakgrove leamdary School Districts since 2006. Now, detectives say they found no sign or evidence of lewd behavior with any of the students. Police in concord now confirming, the arrest of a San FranciscoPolice Officer. We first told you about the arrest last week. A 37yearold Richard Hastings iii. Hes accused of molesting a boy. San Francisco Police say hastings has been suspended without pay. Theres new questions about a man accused of killing two people at a San Francisco jewelry mart last month. 23yearold barry white junior is dpblg suspected of killing the workers during the dispute over jewelry. According to the contra costa times. He spent the last decade working as a county hospital employee as a student worker. But the paper says he shouldnt have been working there at all because he was not a student. Now, the Health Department is now investigating. One employee told the nup barry white junior may newspaper barry white junior may have ben ninted from nepotism. California fish and wildlife wardens say theyve broken up a major abalone poaching ring. 13 people were arrested in a sweep yesterday. Now, the raids were in oakland, san leandro, fairfield, alameda, and sacramento. Authorities say the men caught wild be a boy loney off the mendocino and sonoma wild abalone off the mendocino and sonoma coast and sold it illegally. Happening today, a bill designed to improve the safety of limousines goes before a safety committee. Jerry hill from san mateo introduced the legislation following the deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge had killed five women back in may. The bill would require limousines to have fire extinguishers and have yearly inspections by the highway patrol. The rim fire having a big impact far beyond the fire scene. Lets bring you up to to date on some of the other top stories were following for you earlier this hour, caltrans held a News Conference about the progress on the new bay bridge. They say construction of the new eastern span is still right on schedule. Project manager emphasizes theres a lot of work to do over the long Holiday Weekend but its possible the new 6. 4 billion bridge could be open for traffic by monday evening. Also were these are live pictures. Some sort of Police Action in pinole right now. Look at how its blocked off. This is an area on tara hills road near appian way. Were not sure whats going on. But the crime tape is up. Police have blocked a portion of the road. Weve been getting calls into ktvu from viewers saying that road has been blocked for hours. Now weve asked Police Officers there at the scene whats going on. But right now, we dont have that information. Well bring it to you as we get it. And a man is in the hospital after being shot by San Jose Police. Now, three hours later, another Police Officer was involved in a separate shooting. Ktvus janine de la vega is at the location of that second shooting both happened this morning. And police are still looking for clues. Good morning. Reporter an officer said san carlos near lincoln will be closed for another two hours while they investigate. Its closed from sunol to ray street. You can see there are detectives here on the scene and crime scene investigators who are gathering evidence. There is some evidence markers that you can see there in the road because thats where some debris and clothing are from where the suspect and the shooting took place. This started as a robbery at a safeway at san carlos and meridian at about 4 40 this morning. People in the area called 911 after seeing a man waving a gun nearby. Officers came to the scene. They realized it was the same man involved in the safeway robbery and they say that he threatened them and asked the suspect to drop his gun. He didnt so they fired at him. That suspect was not hit or injured by the dwifer. He surrendered. The officer involved is okay. Now, the first officerinvolved shooting occurred on the east side near king and alum rock. At 1 00 a. M. , police say a woman was robbed at gunpoint by two men in a white car in downtown san jose. Officers spotted the car at that point and a passenger got out of the suspects car, ran away. The car then sped off and crashed close by on the east side near king and alum rock. Police say the driver tried to run over the officer who was on foot with his car and thats when the officer fired back because he was in fear of his life. The victim was hit once, taken to the hospital. The police say his partner is still on the loose. The driver proceeded to go ated and attempt to run over the officer. The officer in fear for his safety, discharged his firearm, striking the driver of the vehicle. The driver was immediately taken to a local area hospital where hes currently being treated for his injuries. Reporter police have their hands full, again, investigating both of these incidents that happened within hours of each other. Police have told us that they are not connected at all. Its just a coincidence that both of them started as robberies and both of them involved officers being forced to shoot at the suspects. Sal some of the questions people asking this morning is what time to go home. What time to get on the roads. You know, i would say the earlier the better. The peak for the afternoon commute would be between 3 00 and 5 00. Now, a lot of people will be trying to get out for the Labor Day Weekend. But i think a lot of people have already gone. Lets take a look at some of these commutes. In san jose, 280 and 101 have been looking very nice so the valley commute has not been much. What i really want to show you is the san mateo bridge. Remember yesterday at this time, it was very heavy and now its light as you head to the high rise with no major issues. Also looking at the commute into oakland here along 880, the read sensor is showing a little bit of yellow which means slower than usual. Now, if you are driving be onto the nimitz freeway heading south. Thats also lighter than usual and driving in livermore from the tracy triangle. Thats uncharacteristically light. I think a lot of people have decided to take a fourday weekend. B. A. R. T. , caltrain and muni, no delays. Lets go to rosemary. Ridge of High Pressure strengthening today and bringing up a big warm yum for the inland cities warmup for the inland areas. Mt. Diablo blue skies. As this ridge pulls our way, the sinking area associated with this pressure is beep ginning to pin the marine layer down. The marine layer is only 1,000 feet or less this morning. Because of this, we have pretty thick fog. Getting better as i speak but you may find it along the morning drive. Temperatures for this everyone why, 5 to 7 degrees warmer. Mid90s for some of the warmest locations. 80 as rnd the bay. 60s with partly cloudy skies along the coast. We continue with an onshore breeze. Its a weak one. The ridge of High Pressure associated with that sinking air and because of it, those low clouds really begin to get pushed to the ground. That as a result has broughts the thicker fog. It looks like now its beginning to clear out. Lets take a closer look at where were seeing some of the fog. Just around the bay and april long the coastline, the along the coastline, the onshore breeze has been week. Through the delta, no relief for you from that cool pacific air for the afternoon. Temperatures will he really heat up. 66 in fairfield right now. 66 in walnut creek. Around the bay, low 60s 63 San Francisco. Mid60s in redwood city. Off to the north bay, santa rosa, 58 degrees. Thats one of the cooler spots. Half moon bay reporting 59. Afternoon highs for today, just take what it felt like yesterday, tack on a few degrees and you are right in the ballpark for the afternoon. 92 for concord. 80 degrees oakland, 85 redwood city, mid60s expected along the coastline. So the summertime spread where we have mid60s at the coast. Mid90s inland. Your extended forecast with your Holiday Weekend in view, temperatures begin to trail off. Notice the possibility of morning drizzle coming in on labor day doesnt look like a big deal. The temperatures may bringing the chance for some drizzle and a sprinkle or two. I will be tracking that for you. In the meanwhile, dont cancel the plans. It does not look like a big deal. Back to the desk. Firefighters are making progress in fighting the rim fire near yosemite. Its 32 contained. Its burned more than 200,000 acres. Its now one of the largest wildfires in california history. Some evacuation orders have been lifted in that area. Debts spite the fire, most of Yosemite National park will be opened this labor day ire day weekend. The smoke from the rim fire is affecting a lot of end of summer plans. Hundreds of miles from the fire. Pam cook is live in our newsroom with that part of the story. Were keeping an eye on lake tahoe which is typically very busy during the long Labor Day Weekend. Instead of the beautiful views of the lake, visitors are trying to see through the quick smoke from the rim fire. Tour i as and people are avoiding the beaches. Many are not going outside at all because of the smoke actually burning their eyes. He hotels, resorts and restaurants have been flooded with phone calls asking about the weather and the smoke. Smokesperson for the Tahoe Chamber says theres cancellations but many people are waiting until the last minute to make a decision. Lodging properties and the restaurants are concerned and are prepared that they will have a slight decrease from what they had hoped for. Who is on strike out there and the reasons behind the new protests. New trouble for lamar odom. Early this morning, the chp arrested him for drunk driving in Southern California. Officers say they spotted him driving erratically on the 101 freeway in the san fernando valley. Odom, a former laker and clipper has made headlineses in recent weeks for alleged drug use. There were reports last weekend that he was missing after a fight with his wife, khloe kardashian. Food Service Workers at Oakland International airport are on strike. They are protesting what they call unfair labor practices. Theyve been in contract talks for the past year and are demanding better pay and benefits this is part of the nationwide labor movement. Yesterday, several bay area fastfood workers went on strike, also demanding better pay. 8 a 6. Right back out to sal as hes trying to smooth out the commute for us. Getting some breaking news in san jose where theres a house fire or some sort of a fire, 2 a 00 commodore in san jose 2000 block of commodore in san jose. Lets go to rosemary.
