San jose firefighters rescued a woman from a house fire. However, her nearly 100 cats did not survive. At 1 45 this morning fire crews responded to the flames on polvadero drive. Ktvus janine de la vega has new information on the challenging rescue. Good morning, janine. Reporter good morning, tori. Its just a sad situation that left the homeowner, who you can see behind me on the phone, just stunned. It was also surprising for firefighters who have never seen so many cats. About 100 of them. It was a challenge to fight. The crates are all burned and char from the fire. The fire broke out at 1 45 near santa teresa and burn el. Heres video of the woman who lives here. She said her dog, bunny, is a hero. Her dog woke her up and thats what alerted her to the fire in her bedroom. She rain to an enclosed patio that was locked. While she was waiting to be saved by firefighters there was nothing she could do for the hundred or so cats in the kennels suffocating in the fire. She said she didnt panic but shared why she could not get out. Theres a door there but its a security door with a dead bolt and the keys were all by the laundry room, by the room on fire. So they had to bust through the wire to get bunny and i out. Reporter seven cats survived the fire. Five are at an Animal Hospital and may have suffered smoke inhalation. The woman that you just heard from, carol miller, says that she does run a cat rescue operation. The house that she lives in suffered major damage. Its gutted. She tells us she didnt leave any candles on. She has no idea how this fire started. She said the smoke alarms didnt activate. Right now, firefighters are going to be investigating the cause of the fire. Youre looking at a live picture of actually two cat kennels that are covered up with that blue blanket there. There are two cats that are there that have survived, but they are being covered because the cats have been traumatized because of the fire. The owner is waiting for them to be transported to anan Animal Hospital to an Animal Hospital. Shes still figuring out where shes gonna live. The house was just renovated. If you refuse to move, you will be arrested if you refuse to move protesters document over the streets in downtown oakland for the third night in a row. Police made at least nine arrests in this latest violence episode. Many downtown storeowners say they are simply fed up with their businesses becoming targets. Its a mess. Ktvus Tara Moriarty is getting a look at how some of that getting a look at some of that damage right now. Shell have a live report at 7 30. Were learning about one brutal attack during last nights violence in downtown oakland. It happened at the floor restaurant on telegraph. Police say a group of men confronted one waiter inside the restaurant. The oakland developer said he was served by that same waiter before the attack. He was approached. Because he refused to defend himself, he was hit in the hammer. Some Oakland Police officers had to leave last nights downtown protest to respond to a shooting in east oakland. Investigators say a 15yearold boy was among two people wounded in the gunfire on 78th avenue last night. Theres no word on their condition. Officers are still looking for suspects and a possible motive. An update on breaking news in San Francisco. Police have surrounded a building in the mission district, where a shooting suspect is believed to be hiding. Ktvus alex savidge was the first reporter on scene. I understand the Police Presence continues to grow. Reporter it does. This all began when a man called 911 earlier this morning to say he had been shot. He told police the man who shot him was inside of a home here on bryant street just up the block right here on 22nd street. Police are still out there. Theyve surrounded this home. I want to show you some of the action that took place as s. W. A. T. Officers came in. Two men were detained. Police at this point arent telling us exactly what their involvement may have been. We did see earlier this morning at least ten people were brought out of the house and searched. None of them were taken into custody. The original shooting that led to the standoff was at 4 30 this morning. Thats when police say a man was hit by gunfire. We saw as he was taken away by paramedics. He was taken away and treated at the hospital and is expected to survive. The motive remains unclear. But as we bring you out here to a live picture, more Police Officers are moving towards this house. It appears the scene could be winding down. Two men detained. It happened before 11 00 last night at spear and howard in San Francisco. Police say the 40yearold man appeared to be intoxicated. Witnesses say he walked out in front of the vehicle before being struck. According to officials, the man suffered nonlifethreatening injuries. 7 07. We are hearing for the first time from one of the jurors who found George Zimmerman not guilty. Concealing her identity, she did an interview with cnns anderson cooper. She said the evidence presented in the case convinced her that zimmerman felt his life was in danger when she shot Trayvon Martin and she does not believe race was a factor. I think if there was another person, spanish, white, asian, if they came in the same position they were trayvon was, i think george would have reacted the exact same way. Juror b37 said some members wanted to find zimmerman guilty of something. But she said after hours of deliberating and reading over the law they decided there was nothing to support a different verdict. A woman who is accused of attacking singer Lester Chambers while he dedicated a song to Trayvon Martin is facing charges. 73yearold chammers was performing in hayward on saturday. You can see a woman jumping on stage and then pushing chambers down. She reportedly yelled its all your fault. She was quickly tackled by other musicians. Shes identified as dena japan lynn andrews denalynn andrews. Chambers is recovering at home. A fremont han has pleaded guilty to murder but wont face prison time. In august of 2006, prosecutors say papal was driving his suv in fremont when he hit and killed 54yearold steven jay wilson. Prosecutors say he then drove to San Francisco where he crashed into more than a dozen other people. Yesterday, the judge ruled he was not guilty by reason of insanity. He will now stay at Napa State Hospital indefinitely. Doctors are looking into the mystery of a florida man found unconscious in a Palm Springs Hotel and woke up with no memory. The man was found in february in a motel 6. He woke up speaking speedish and calling himself johan. Police say he had four forms of identification on him and my have been in town for a tennis tournament. Diagnosed have dig him with a mental ill doctors have diagnosed him with a mental illness. San francisco supervisors are considering banning Aerial Advertising in the airspace above the americas cup race. This comes about complaints about banners flying over as game. The Oakland Raiders want to build a new stadium that would be the smallest in the nfl. A new study paid for by the raiders says about says a 50,000seat stadium would be the most financially responsible replacement for the current oakland coliseum. A stadium construction expert says the new stadium would cost 800 million. There are reports the raiders say they could contribute 300 million to the cost and 200 million more might be available from the nfl. Starting next month, parents in pittsburg who host parties where alcohol is served to minors could face fines. The City Council Approved the measure last night in a unanimous vote. Parents can be fined 500 for the first offense and 1,000 for the second. A survey of minors in pittsburg found that nearly half of those asked said their main source of alcohol came from house parties. The measure take effect august 14th. Starbucks is investigating a complaint by several def customers at one of its new york locations. Some of the temperatures in lake county hit the 40s which is not something theyve had for a long, long time. That low spinning off the coast is responsible for the bigger fog bank, the westerly breeze and also some of that drizzle. Low, overcast, drizzle. Windy in spots. Theres still gusts over 30 miles an hour. 50s, 60s, 70s for many. Very low 80s. It looks like well see a rebound of near average by wednesday and then warmer weather kicks in. It starts by friday. Storeowners in downtown oakland are cleaning up after another night of violence and vandalism. Protesters took over the streets of downtown oakland for the third night in a row. The splinter groups broke off from the main protest and ended up coming here to the mens warehouse on telegraph and broadway. Its boarded up and behind it, some shattered glass there that folded over and crumpled. Were also learning about one brutal attack last night at the flora restaurant. A group of young men confronted it a waiter at the restaurant and struck him with a hammer. S about owners have been frustrated by protests like last night for a very long time now. Windows and cleaning up the walls. Its a mess. Reporter now, we drove around this morning and we noticed that a bank had its windows smashed. At least three other businesses, including a Cell Phone Store and bank had their windows boarded up to prevent damage. We hope to get damage estimates later this morning. This late night violence and vandalism followed a big protest in downtown oakland earlier in the evening. A demonstration caused problems for commuters shortly after 7 00. Dozens of protesters walked onto northbound interstate 880 at broadway and briefly shut down the freeway in both directions. Even though they got stuck, some drivers expressed their support for the freeway protesters. I dont mind at all. You know, if this is what its gonna take, i will do it over and over. Reporter it doesnt bother you that the freeway stopped and people are in the middle of traffic . I guess but to get peoples attention this stuff has to happen. Reporter police made their way on the onramp and they were able to clear the freeway within a halfhour. Protesters also briefly blocked streets and a portion of a freeway in los angeles. It happened last night after several hundred demonstrators gathered in a park not far from Downtown Los Angeles to sing and pray. Officers say a few people used the event as an excuse to assault people, jump on cars and break windows. More than 300 officers moved in and arrested 13 people. Police plan to crack down again today. Friends and supporters of Trayvon Martin are planning another vigil to honor his memory. Tonights gathering will be on the steps of city hall at 6 30. The branch of the naacp says they are hosting the event in response to the George Zimmerman verdict. On saturday, zimmerman was cleared of seconddegree murder for the shooting of trayvon. The prosecutors star witness is speaking out about George Zimmermans decision not to testify. If you were a real man, you would have stand on that stage and tell what happened. Rachel genleel was the last person to talk to Trayvon Martin before he was shot and killed by zimmerman. During the trial she testified that she heard martin calling for help. The defense argued that her story kept changing. The verdict in the George Zimmerman trial has sparked three nights of protests in oakland and all over the country. We have links of the video at ktvu. Com. Livermore police say it took three men just four minutes to burglarize a Jewelry Store. This is Security Camera footage of the burglary in progress. It happened around 3 30 yesterday morning at the kay Jewelry Store at the livermore outlets. Three men wearing hoodies, masks and gloves stole 100,000 in goods. The suspect in last weeks homicide at a Jewelry Store is set to face a judge today. Barry white is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon. Hes accused of killing two workers and injuring the owner at the jewelry mart on brannen street on friday. White is headed for trial in Contra Costa County next month in a separate incident. Police say he tried to ral an officers a ram an officers patrol car back in 2009. Police are looking for a suspect they say tried to kill two people. Hes accused of stabbing two people in concord last wednesday night. The victims were pumping gas at the bonfair market on grant street. Investigators say the man asked them if they were gang members and stabbed them several times. He reportedly has ties to concord, bay pointe, pittsburg. The ntsbs next steps will include interviewing first responders, evacuating the planes evacuation slides and conducting an indepth analysis of the performance of the flight 214. The chinese consulate says it is doing its best to help the victims. The Spokesman Says the consul general met with victims yesterday and expressed his sympathy. The consul general talked to the ceo of Asiana Airlines and said the families of the three girls killed should be given more compensation. One couple lost their only child. And more than 100 people turned out for a blood drive at San FranciscoInternational Airport. A spokesperson for the blood center says having all of the emergency victims come into the hospital depleted the blood supply. One donor talked about the reason why he donated. Just in case somebody needs my blood. I dont know what type of blood i have but hopefully it will help somebody out. Sf general took in 67 victims. 6 are still in the hospital. 2 are in Critical Condition with injuries to the spinal cord and abdomen. The family of missing Daphne Viola Webb is holding out hope she will be found. They are holding a News Conference on 7th street at 4 00 p. M. This afternoon. Daphnes mother will be providing an update on the familys efforts in finding baby daphne. The little girl has been missing for six days. A state panel has recommended creating a Safety Task Force to improve oil refinery safety. Governor jerry brown formed the Panel Following last years august 6th fire at chevrons richmond refinery. The state Panel Suggests creating the task force to improve collaboration among regulatory agencies. It looked at ways to improving strategies. There doesnt seem to be Much Movement in the contract negotiations in the b. A. R. T. Strike. The Union Spokesperson said the two sides only spent 20 minutes at the negotiation table. She said negotiators showed up at 4 30 the talks were over by ten to 5 00. Union says if a deal is not reached by august 5th, they will strike again. Drivers in eastern Contra Costa County should avoid a section of brentwood boulevard. A big rig crash has shut down the stretch of road from haven wood. The truck carrying produce lost a tire causing it to roll over. It caught on fire, forcing police to shut down the street. There was also a diesel spill. There are no problems on the bridge. A little bit damp because of the weather. We havent had major problems reported by chp on that deck. Northbound 101 traffic does look good coming up to the 80 split. Also looking at 880 southbound. This commute has become a lot worse between 238 and mowry avenue. Police have taken one person into custody following a standoff that was sparked by a shooting. Ktvus alex savidge joins us live from the scene at bryant and 22nd. Reporter this situation here in the mission has been resolved this morning. Police say theyve taken one person into custody in connection with the shooting. Theyve also recovered a pellet gun at the scene. This shooting led to a standoff that played out here at this home on bryant street right near 22nd street. Let me show you what it looked like an hour ago as s. W. A. T. Officers moved in and they did take at first several people into custody. Police had to really sort things out and fick out who exactly they figure out who exactly they were looking for. The house was surrounded for a couple of hours after a man called 911 about 4 30 this morning and he told police he had been shot. He told officers that the shooter was inside of his house. Now, the man shot was taken to the hospital. He was still awake and breathing. Were told hes expected to survive. At this point, police cant say what prompted the shooting. For three nights in a row, protesters have taken over the streets of downtown oakland and part of the freeway. For many, its freedom of speech. For others, its violent and scary. One woman was visibly frightened trying to drive out of the area yesterday. A restaurant worker was brutally attacked. Businesses are now damaged even journalists trying to report the story are being targeted. Many people think police are letting the situation get out of hand. But oaklands police chief says his hands are tied. You give them an order to disperse over and over and over again. Why not enforce that order . Well, we will at some point. Campers are honoring a kuhner who died Near Yosemite National Park after a tree fell on other. Condolences are pouring in dedicated to 21yearold inez wittenburg. The woman who lives here says she works for the stanford cat network. Its a nonprofit. She had about 100 rescue cats in her home. The majority of them died. Their bodies are still inside. She plans to return here later today to retrieve them. Firefighters say the homeowner called 911 at 1 45 and said she was trapped in her house. There was a fire in her bedroom. The woman, carol miller, said she was sleeping and her dog woke her up and saved her from dying in the fire. Firefighters found her crouched. It took firefighters about an hour to knock down the fire. The flames gutted the home. They did find seven cats that survived. The cats are doing okay. We have them in san jose and they are in oxygen enclosures. The doctor has triaged them. They are doing pretty good right now. Reporter in the last 20 minutes, the receipt maining two cat remaining two cats were picked up and taken to an Animal Hospital. All of them will be observed today. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The homeowner said she didnt light any candles. She has no idea how this fire broke out. Now, as far as the cats that are still inside there dead, the homeowner says that she actually wants to remove the bodies herself. Investigators say a 15yearold boy was one of two people wounded in the gunfire on 78th avenue last night. No word on either victim either victims condition. Before 11 00 last night in San Francisco, earlier Police Reported the victim was 16 years old and now say that victim is a 40yearold man. Police say he appeared to be intoxicated. This latenight violence and vandalism followed a big protest in downtown oakland earlier in the evening. The demonstration caused problems for commuters shortly after 7 00. Dozens of protesters walked onto northbound interstate 880 at broadway and briefly shut down the freeway in both directions. Even though they got stuck, some drivers expressed their support for the freeway protesters. I dont minds it at all. If this is what its gonna take, i will do it again. Reporter it doesnt bother you the freeway is stopped and the people are in the middle of traffic . Officers say a few people used the event as an excuse to assault people, jump on cars and break windows. More than 300 officers moved in and arrested 13 people. Police plan to crack down again today. Firefighters say carol miller called 911 at 1 45 and she was trapped in her house and there was a fire in her bedroom. Miller said she was sleeping and her dog woker had up and saved her from dying in this fire. Firefighters found miller crouched in the fetal position in an enclosed outdoor patio. They had to cut through a gate to rescue her and her dog. It took firefighters about an hour to knock down the games. But they found seven cats that survived. Im just done.
