saturday, may 26th. it is noticeably cooler outside for what is considered to be the unofficial start of summer. let's check in with rosemary for a quick lock at your forecast. hey, rosemary. >> good morning to you! better weather in store for your holiday weekend! a mix of sun and clouds this morning, a little breezy for the afternoon. temperatures slightly warmer than yesterday but still relatively cool for this time of year. we'll look at what you can expect for your area and the possibility of maybe a stray shower lingering for today as well. back to you. the dumbarton bridge is closed for the weekend. the bridge will be shut down for three days. allie rasmus is live at the span to tell us more about the reason behind the closure and the progress crews are making so far this morning. >> reporter: mike, i just talked to the project spokeswoman who says so far everything is on schedule. crews are starting their work on the west end of the dumb where tonbridge, and you can see some construction equipment behind us. crews are starting on the west end, menlo park section, and working their way towards the middle of the bridge. overnight crews began some of the demolition and prep work they need for the seismic retro fit project. it will take the whole weekend to do it. this is what needs to be in place to make this bridge safer in the event of an earthquake. it's a giant expanded joint. been before it can go in place under the bridge, portions of this bridge kneeled to be raised three to five inches. and there's a lot of other prep work and demolition work that needs to happen. >> drivers may have seen already a big steel plate on the bridge over the last few weeks. the contractor also already been underneath that plate, demoing the concrete in there. them lift the plate, demo the rest of it, open another 18" gap, so they can get ready for the new joints. >> reporter: and while all this work takes place, the dumbarton bridge will remain closed. it shut down at 10 last night and is scheduled to be closed until 5 a.m. tuesday morning. but depending how fast this work goes, the bridge could open earlier than that. and caltrans is supposed to give us more details on the overnight progress at 8:00 this morning. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. and here is a look at a couple of the alternate routes drivers can take and head north and use the san mateo bridge or go south around the bay on highway 237. there was a shooting near the dumb where tonbridge before it closed. police believe it happened around 5:15 in menlo park on the bay front expressway between universitiest avenue and willow road. 30-year-old victim was found shot on his car at woodside road. he is expected to survive. police are look for four men who targeted the victim from a dark green car. a man is fighting for his life after a shooting in san francisco. that happened after 2:00 this morning at oakdale avenue in the city's bayview neighborhood. a man was shot at least once. his injuries are life- threatening. no arrests have been made. oakland police need the public's help need a help solving a hit-and-run. police say the male victim was critically injured. he was transported to highland hospital with serious head and other injuries. investigators say they do not have much information to go on right now and at this . they are not sure about the type of vehicle that struck the victim. one man was taken into custody last night and is facing a charge of felony vandalism. the demonstrations were for occupier chris moreland, who is holding a bullhorn in this video. protestors say he was arrested after a confrontation with officers on wednesday. the chief had just held a community meeting to respond to allegations of police abuse after an officer shot and killed 18-year-old alan blueford. >> everyone was practicing their first amendment rights. >> do you think crisscrossed the line? >> i don't think crisscrossed the line at all. >> while protostars say he was arrested for was reduced to a misdemeanor. the chief understands the community's concerns and said he talked to the blueford family and is promising a thorough investigation into the shooting. volunteers will not be searching for sierra lamar today, as they usually do on saturdays. they're breaking for the holiday, but will resume next week. last night hundreds of people turned out for a fund-raiser in support of sierra's family. there was some live music and dancing at jason stevens' winery in gilroy. people were asked to donate $20 each to help fund search related expenses. sierra as family are gritful for the community support. >> having people here for us to support us and -- if we're staying positive, they're staying positive with us. so that definitely i -- helps a lot in this gives support to the family and let them know we're praying for them and we hope the best for them. >> the next volunteer search is scheduled for wednesday at 8 a.m. a hope and faith rally will be held on june1st in fremont at washington high school, which is sierra lamar's former school. the suspect in the sierra lamar case is being held without bail and is due to return to court next week. antolin garcia torres made his first court appearance on thursday. the hearing lasted less than a minute and he did not enter a plea. the 21-year-old is charged with sierra's kidnapping and murder and is eligible for the death penalty. authorities say his dna was found on clothing that belonged to sierra. that clothing was in her bag which was discovered near her home two days after she disappeared. garcia torres is due back in court on thursday. meantime, the santa clara county sheriff's dive team completed a search at this reservoir yesterday. the team spent the week looking for any sign of sierra lamar, but did not find anything in connection to the case. the sheriff's department says it will resume its search of area waterways next tuesday. a prayer vigil will be held in hayward tomorrow night for slain nursing student michelle le. they will gather at 6 p.m. sunday to mark the anniversary of her disappearance. investigators say the 26-year- old was attacked one year ago on may 27th, at the kaiser parking garage in hayward. her body was discovered four months later. her former schoolmate gisele esteban has been charged with her murder. her trial is scheduled for september. firefighters in the south bay were called out to a fire along coyote creek. that fire was reported around 9:45 last night near torres road and capital expressway. a fire department captain says flames burned about five thousand square feet of grass. the fire put off a lot of smoke and shouldered for hours but didn't damage any buildings. cal-fire is urging caution this weekends buses fire dange these firefighters are getting ready. the start of fire season is more than a week away, but statewide fires are running double this time compared to last year. cal-fire and campers we spoke with at the state park know how quickly a fire fire can erupt. >> we're running fires on a daily basis, whereas last year at this time we weren't near the same level. >> i think it's good that it rained so we don't have to worry about every spark. >> cal-fire says don't let the cool weather fool you. as soon as the weather warms up and the wind gets blown again, the dry grass that fuels wildfires will be dryer than before and ready to burn. cal-fire also says get a campfire permit where required, and make sure there's a 10 foot clearance all around. >> see people camping, rifle. it's too early to determine a motive. dozens of inmates in las vegas are free this morning after corrections officers called in sick. officials released 70 non- violent inmates yesterday because the jail wasn't properly staffed. the police union says it was not a blue flu protesting layoffs. the union says the jail was already planning to release some inmates to plug an 18 million accepting illegal campaign contributions. he faces up to 30 years in prison and a million and a half dollars in fines. the judge closed the courtroom yesterday to deal with what she called a juror matter. then she sent the jury home for the holiday weekend. jurors must reach a unanimous decision on each count to convict. the man accused of killing etan patz may be mentally ill. they say hernandez is by pole or and schizophrenic. he was arraigned on murder charges yesterday. his wife it and daughter were upset at court. hernandez is on suicide watch at a psychiatric hospital. castro valley is remembering a 14-year-old girl killed 18 years ago. in 1994, a young musician and straight aa student was found dead inside her home. the family led a march last night to support their foundation for child safety. they also say they want to keep her killing in the public eye for that maybe someone will come forward with information to find the person responsible. >> just -- still have so many people who come forward and help us establish the effort and make it -- >> there is a $100 thousand reward for information leading to the conviction of her killer. there will be a gathering today to remember a young man who was killed in a drive-by shooting in pleasant hill. michael de won jones was shot and killed on the night of february 11th. family and friends in tell ktvu today would have been his 22nd birthday. they are going to mark the occasion this afternoon at loma regional park in antioch. the murder remains unsolved. witnesses told police a blue saturn raced from the scene after the shots were fired. three young patients are recovering from a triple transplant. surgeons at children's hospital transplanted one heart a day for three days, three weeks ago. the first went to amanda seacrest, a student at st. mary's college. the next day william mag row a senior from palo alto, then another heart became available for james spencer, a freshman at santa weekend. hey, rosemary. >> good morning to you! partly cloudy, a little cooler than normal but better than where we sat yesterday. we've got numbers actually going to warm up yesterday with more sunshine outside our door this morning, a bit of a cool start in some areas. upper 40s to low 50s around parts of the valley. and then inland i should say around the bay, temperatures sitting in the low to mid-50s. by noontime, along the coast we'll remain cool for today, upper 50s around the bay, low 60s and your lunch hour mid to upper 60s for our valley and our warmer spots. for the afternoon, partly cloudy, mostly sunny skies. we will again remain a little below normal for this time of year, upper 50s to low 60s for the coast. 60s around the bay. some of the warmer spots expected to warm into the low 70s which may sound good. we'll have an afternoon breeze as well going out to the big celebration for tomorrow, going to be partly cloudy at 10 a.m., 57 degrees. right near the golden gate and along the forecast there, you shows you we'll warm back into the low 60s with mostly sunny skies by the afternoon. into the evening hours, the fireworks begin about 9:30, 52 degrees. partly cloudy skies, a little cool there and a little patchy fog deck along the coastline but it looks like it will be fairly shallow and we're hoping to actually get a good view of the fireworks at this . giving you a like at your extended forecast. notice the warm-up, we'll be in good shape sunday into monday. and that warming continues tuesday and wednesday. back to you. today is the debut of the new earthquake exhibit at the california science academy. big draw is the shake house that lets people experience how the quakes felt. david stevenson got a sneak peek at the exhibit earlier this week. there he is, shaking like a leaf. that exhibit also features a walk thru model of the earth and interactive earthquake preparedness area. two toddlers killed after getting trapped by fire in a trailer. how firefighters believe that fire started and why they are now asking parents to talk to their children. plus, new information about that body found in a trash can in pleasanton. the details we are learning about the victim. closed for traffic. the complete shutdown of the dumbarton bridge is underway and crews are working non-stop to get it back open for the tuesday morning commute. the bridge connecting the east bay to the peninsula is undergoing a seismic retrofit. the work is expected to last for the next three days. allie rasmus has been checking on the progress so far, and joins us live to tell us if everyone is on schedule. >> reporter: that's right, so far everything is on schedule, but the bulk of the work construction crews are doing on the bridge this weekend is focused on the west end of the bridge. that's the end we'll zoom in to show you. you can see some. construction equipment offer there in the distance there. but to do this work, crews need to raise piers on the west end, three to five inches. that's what they started working on overnight and this is what they'll put in place, once they've finished raising those piers on the bridge. giant expanding joint. this is supposed to make the bridge safer in the event of earthquake. and overnight crews got some of the initial demolition and prep work out of the way so they could put that joint in place. >> work overnight was according to schedule. we finished demolishing about six feet of concrete in order to open up space for the new seismic joint. we took out the original seismic joint, took out the deck plates. >> now while all this work goes on, the dumbarton bridge is closed for the weekend, until 5 a.m. tuesday morning. but depending on how quickly everything goes, it could open earlier than that. i asked the spokeswoman if there's any idea about whether it would open early and she said at this . it's too to tell. they'll need to shut it down again for the process on the east side of the bridge. but for now the work on the west side is on schedule. we're supposed to get an update from caltrans about the progress, about a half hour from now. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. and if you need to get around that bridge, here are the alternate routes. use the san mateo bridge or drive south around the bay on highway 2 level this we'll check in with allie rasmus again in about 30 minutes. muni riders will have to survive awhile without the most used rail line in the city. muni began shutting service at 7:00 last night. it will be out for nine days, due to construction at church and boast. muni says 20,000 people ride that line each weekday. it runs from ocean beach to the caltrain station near at&t park. >> take you to the front row where i work. and it just down the street from my apartment so it's really super-convenient so now it's going to be a real pain. >> shutdown also affects the -- which will still run from geneva north but will stop at the church street station where passengers will have to transfer. buses will be added to help transfer passengers. also in san francisco, first street between mission and howard street is closed. crews are working to build a temporary bridge for the new trans-bay terminal. the section of first street will be closed until 5 a.m. tuesday. police are looking for the owners of more than a hundred bicycles allegedly stolen by one teenager. show you a picture of just within of the bikes officers say was stolen by 18-year-old irving sanchez. police say they found eight stolen bikes in his silver terrace home. but an investigation also led officers to two storage lockers in oakland and that's where they say they discovered another 106 bites. sanchez now faces fell 33 counts of receiving stolen property. if you the remains are that of a woman most likely an adult. however the preliminary autopsy do not determine an identity or cause a death. but law enforcement officials say they are sure that the body is not missing morgan hill's high schooler sierra lamar. police say the body found had dark brown hair with blue fingernail polish. she was area an old navy shirt and pajama bottoms. her ethnicity is still not known. >> we always have to treat it as if it's a homicide. so our investigators will do everything we can to follow up on all the leads, to continue to canvas the area and talk to neighbors. >> and police are check, with nearby law enforcement agencies and their missing persons cases. two girls in bakersfield died in a fire started by kids playing with matches. they were only two and three years old. they were playing in a vacant trailer with two boys who were a couple years older. firefighters say the trailer caught fire after the boys lit matches. >> we ran over here, they grabbed the water hose, they said they might be babies, we broke windows out but beyond -- you couldn't do nothing. flames out of control. >> the boys escaped by running from the trailer but they closed the door behind them once the fire started. it's unclear if any of the boys or their parents will face charges. state regulators say pg&e put the public at risk for at least 30 years and have recommended steep fines for the utility. pg&e faces millions of dollars in fines following the 2010 san bruno explosion that killed 8 people but now faces more fines after a new staff report by the state public utilities commission found the company misclassified hundreds of miles of natural gas lines and allowed some lines to run at dangerously high pressures. pg&e says it plans to file a response in july. today a group of people in almeida will wade out into the water off crown beach to mark the first anniversary of the death of raymond zach. the 52-year-old died there one year ago. police and firefighters watched from the shore as officials couldn't save him because the water rescue program had ended due to lack of funds. zach's family has filed a lawsuit against the city and county of alameda accusing them of negligence. two children were rescued from san francisco beaches in two separate incidents. this is the video from the first rescue off chrissy field. a coast gart boat and helicopter were called in to help it. happened at about 1:30 yesterday afternoon. a 12-year-old boy was pulled from the water and taken to the hospital. fire officials say child was not seriously hurt. they say it's not clear how the boy got so far out into the water in the first place. the other rescue happened less than an hour later at san francisco's secret neighborhood. a 16-year-old boy got stuck on a rock. firefighters were able to get him to safety. he was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. a sonoma county sheriff's office fears its deputies will from to make a few rescue on the russian river this weekend. they're patrolling popular spots on the river where drinking has been a problem in the past. the other problems were river parties, they say, are the large numbers of cars clocking the river roads and all the trash left behind juppe the golden gate bridge's celebration is underway. high-ranking politicians helped mark the occasion marine layer will be shallow enough and it's not going to intrude into the bay. we should see the fireworks tort time in the this morning, partly cloudy, mostly clear depending on where you look on the coast. we've got clouds and fog, hugging once again. and along the coast you will be the last to see that burnoff for today. and the first to see it come back for the afternoon and evening hours. your satellite radar here on the back edge of this system now, you can see that clearly here. over the sierra you're still going to find those showers if this is your destination for the weekend. we will be clearing out and drying out, and warming up as we move through the weekend. today we're going to remain a little below normal. so again, if you're headed to the sierra today, expect scattered showers, for us relatively cool, the afternoon breeze will be back from 10 to 20 miles per hour. our highs will be just a few degrees warmer than what we felt yesterday with more sunshine. and we're expecting just a slight possibility maybe a few scattered showers for today. they'll be short-lived, they won't be a big deal but that plan for if you're going to do some hiking. scattered showers in feeling a little bit more like winter than spring up in the sierra this holiday weekend. here's what it looked like yesterday. heavy, wet snow fell around the 5,000 foot level all the way up donner summit. some drivers headed to lake tahoe say they were caught off guard by the blast of winter- like weather. >> who would expect that? i would expect this in january, right? >> and we want to show you live pictures now from a camera in kingvale. most of yesterday's snow did not stick to the roads. caltrans says no chain requirements are in place right now, and as rosemary mentioned temperatures [not understandable] so we were a bit worried. >> officials don't believe there's any terrorism connection. schneider is in custody and faces charges every resisting arrest and disorderly intoxication. a gunman who took hostages in indiana has died. he held hostages before shooting himself twice in the head. he died at the hospital last night. police believe the man went to the office looking for someone he thought owed him money. he held employees hostage and then released them. officers believe the man shot himself sometime after the hostage released and before officers storm the building. there's more mudslinging in the battle to recall the wisconsin governor. last night for the first time a debate was held between current governor scott walker and his democratic challenger milwaukee mayor tom barrett. each man accuse the other of being an extremist. last winter nearly a million people signed a recall petition offer the g.o.p. passed a measure removing collecting bargaining rights from public workers. the recalled vote is on june 5th. and applause for former u.s. congresswoman gabrielle giffords who made a rare public appearance last night, she received the salute to women award from the museum in morning her retired from congress in january to focus on her recovery. she was shot in the head while meeting with constituents at a public event in tucson, arizona last january. a former police officer accused in a corruption scandal in contra costa county has pleaded not guilty. he is accused of four new charges, including wire fraud, stemming from his alleged role in setting up drunk driving arrests of men in divorce cases. he worked as a contra costa sheriff's deputy and a danville police officer before resigning. santa clara county district attorney's office is warning residents about landscaped scammers who often target the elderly. police say the scam artists show up at your door and offer to do work. now they usually quote a price that is lower than normal and always asked for that money up front. which police say is a warning sign. homeowners are urged to find reliable gardeners through neighbors or friends. silicon valley is trying to persuade the president to save the historic hangar one. it's an old blimp hangar at moffette in mountain view. the mercury news reports three major business groups sent a letter to president obama urging him to intervene. nasa wants to transfer the hangar to another government agency. google executives offered to pay for its restoration in exchange for using some of the hangar's space to house their private fleet of jets. a famous gay bar in west hollywood has decided to ban bachelorette parties until all couples have the right to marry. the owner of the abby says straight people are front national historic park. this morning a new visitor have will be dedicated. the park in richmond was established 12 years ago to honor those who helped the war efforts stateside. the new visitors the weekend. the bridge connecting the east bay to the peninsula is undergoing a seismic retrofit that is expected to last three days. crews are installing seismic joints to protect the bridge during earthquake. people who normally use the bridge will have to use another bridge or drive around the bay. >> it's very tough, going around the bay. >> are you willing to driver? >> i'm planning to drive, and very likely will have to go to the peninsula. >> it will be a challenge for me because i have to cross the bridge three or for disa week, now use san mateo bridge. >> caltrans hopes to open the bridge tuesday morning at 5. allie rasmus will have a live update on the progress crews are making in about 30 minutes. here's a better look at the alternate routes the drivers were talking about. you can head north and use the san mateo bridge, or you can go south and go around the bay on highway 237. there was a shooting near the dumbarton bridge just before it closed. police believe it happened in menlo park on the pay front expressway between university and willow road. the 30-year-old victim but found shot in his car. he is expected to survive. police say they are looking for four men who targeted the victim from a dark green four- door car. man is in critical condition amp a shooting in san francisco happened just after 2 a.m. at oakdale avenue and baldwin court. police say a man was shot at least once. his injuries are life- threatening. so far no arrests have been made. oakland police need the public's help in solving a hit- and-run last night in the area of foothill boulevard at harrington avenue. police say the male victim was critically injured. he was taken to highland hospital with serious head and other injuries. investigators say they don't have much information to go on right now. at this . they aren't sure about the type of vehicle that struck the victim. volunteers will not be searching for sierra lamar today as think usually do on saturdays. instead they're breaking for the holiday but will resume next week. last night hundreds of people turned out for a fund-raiser in support of sierra's family. there was live music and dancing at jason stevens wine fly gilroy. people were asked to donate $20 each to help fund search related expenses. sierra's family says they are gritful for the community support. >> having people here for us, to support us and if we're staying positive, they're staying positive with us. so -- that definitely i can help a lot. >> i'm hoping it gives support to the family and that let them know we're praying for them and we hope the best for them. >> the next volunteer search is scheduled for wednesday at 8 a.m. a hope and faith rally will be held on june 1 in fremont at washington high school, which is sierra lamar's former school. the suspect in the sierra lamar case is being held without bail and is due to return to court next week. antolin garcia torres made his first court appearance thursday. the hearing lasted less than a minute and he did not enter a plea. the 21-year-old is charge with sierra's murder and is eligible for the death penalty. authorities say garcia torres' dna was found on clothing that belonged to sierra, that clothing was in her bag discovered near her home two days after she disappeared. garcia torres is due back in court on thursday. meantime, santa clara county sheriff's dive team completed a search at the reservoir near morgan hill yesterday. the team spent the week look for any sign of sierra lamar, but did not find anything in connection to the case. the sheriff's department says it will resume its search of area waterways next tuesday. a prayer vigil will be held in hayward forker tomorrow night for slayed nursing student michelle le, mark, the anniversary of her dispense. the 26 was attacked one year ago on may 27 at the kaiser parking garage in hayward. her body was discovered four months later. le's former schoolmate gisele esteban has been charged with the murder. her trial is scheduled for september. state regulators say pg&e put the public at risk for at least 30 years. they have recommended steep fines for the utility. pg&e also faces millions of dollars in fines following the 20 senn san bruno explosion that killed ail pete but now it faces even more fines after a new staff report by the state public utilities commission found the company misclassified hundreds of miles of natural gas transmission lines and allowed some lines to run at dangerously high pushes pg&e plans to file a response in july. firefighters had to put out a grass fire along coyote creek. the fire was reported around:45 last night in capitol expressway. a fire department captain says the fire burned about 5,000 square feet of grass and shrubs and put off a lot of smoke 3 smolder for hours but it did not do any damage to buildings. cal-fire is urging caution this weekend because of increasing fire danger. now these are firefighters from st. helena getting ready. the officials start of fire season is more then a week away but statewide fires are running double this time last year. cal-fire and campers say napa valley state park know how quickly a small fire can grow. >> we're running fires on a daily basis, whereas last year at this time we weren't near this same level. >> i think it's good that it rained so we don't have to worry jail was not properly staffed. the police union says it was not a blue flu protesting impending layoffs. the union says the jail was already planning to releasing some inmates to plug an $18 million is shocked and saddened by the arrest of a staff member who is accused of leaking secret documents. the suspect worked as a butler for pope benedict since 2006. he is accused of leaking documentst to an italian journalist. those documents allege corruptions and power struggles within the vatican. in a separate case, vatican officials ousted the presence president of the vatican bank for also keeping donations from bain employees when at the same time labeling the company's practices as job killers. jurors in the john edwards corruption trial will return to court on tuesday. it will be their seventh day of deliberations. edwards is charged with six counts of accepting illegal campaign contributions. he faces up to 30 years in prison and a million and a half dollars in fines. the judge closed the courtroom yesterday to deal with what she called was a juror matter. she then sent the jury home for the holiday weekend. jurors must reach a unanimous decision on each count to convict. a man accused of killing eaton patz may be mentally ill pedro hernandez's lawyer says he has a history of hallucinations. he was arraigned on murder charges yesterday after telling police he strangled etan in 1979. husband wife and caught with upset in court. hernandez is on suicide watch at a psychiatric hospital. castro valley is remembering a 14-year-old girl killed 18 years ago. in 1994, young musician jenny lin was found dead in her home. her family led a march last night to support their foundation for child safety. they also say they want to keep jenny's killing in the public eye so maybe someone will come forward with information to fine the person responsible. >> we're just so grateful we still have so many people who come forward and help us establish this effort and make it going as well it is. >> there is a $100,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of her killer. there will be a gathering today to remember a young san pablo man who was killed in a drive-by shooting in pleasant hill. michael de won jones was shot and killed the night of february 11th. family and friends tell ktvu today would have been his 22nd birthday. they will mark the occasion this afternoon at loma regional park in antioch. jones' killing remains unsolved. witnesses told police a blue saturn raced from the scene after the shots were fired. three young patients are packets. memorial day weekend is looking a little hazy for parts of southwest. smoke from a wildfire in southwestern new mexico is spreading across the state and into arizona. strong winds are pushing ash from the fire 35 to 40 miles away. air quality warnings are going up as far away as albuquerque and santa fe. that fire has burned more than 130 square miles. and wildfire near julian, california scorched thousands of acres there. it's been dub the banner fire. that fire was a 15-acre fire early thursday afternoon, and then it grew to more than a thousand acres in just two hours. hot, dry and now getting the up close look only the progress piece made on the project expected to last three days. and she'll have a report coming up. this is the bridge that connects the east bay to the peninsula, it's going to be closed for the weekend while crews install seismic joints. that should better protect the bridge during earthquake. caltrans hopes to open the bridge tuesday morning at 5, until then people who normally use that bridge are going to have to use another one or drive around the bay. here's a look at your alternate routes. you can either head north and go across the 98 bridge, or you can go south and get around the bay on highway 237. muni riders will have to survive awhile without the most used rail line in the city. they're shutting down service last night and it's going to be out for nine days due to some construction at church. muni says 20,000 people ride the line every weekday. and it runs from observation beach to the caltrain station near at&t park. >> takes me to the front door where i work. and it's just right down the treatment from my apartment so it's supervene so now it's a real pain. >> the shutdown also affects the church will runs but will stop at the church street station where passengers are going to center to transfer. buses will be added to help transfer passengers. also in san francisco, first street between mission and howard is closed. crews are working to build a temporary bridge for the new trans-bay tomorrow national. so first street there won't reopen until 5 a.m. tuesday. last night oakland police made one arrested during an occupy protest stemming from a deadly police shooting. more than 100 people held a rally demanding justice for one of their own. they faced off with police officers outside police headquarters and also outside the alameda county jail. one man was taken into custody last night and is facing a charge of felony vandalism. he is accused of breaking a window on the 400 block of webster street. and while protestors say moreland was arrested for felony, the charge was reduced to misdemeanor disturbing the peace. occupiers helped raise 250 dollar bail. and the chief said he understands that the community's concerns he and he says he is talked to the blue ford family and is promising a fair and thorough investigation into the shooting. new information coming out regarding the body dumped in a pleasanton trash can. the remains are that of a woman most likely an adult. however, the preliminary autopsy could not determine an identity or a cause of death. but law enforcement officials say they are sure the body is not missing morgan hill high school student sierra lamar. police say the body found had dark brown hair with blue fingernail polish. she was wearing an old navy shirt and pajama bottoms. authorities say her ethnicity is still not known. >> our investigators will follow up on the leads, continue to canvas the area and talk to neighbors. >> police are checking with nearby law enforcement agencies and their missing persons cases. two girls in bakersfield died in a fire started by children playing with matches. the girls were only two and three years old. they were playing in a vacant trailer with two boys who were a couple years older. firefighters say the trailer caught fire after the boy lit the matches. >> we ran over here, grabbed the water hose and nothing we could do. say there might be babies. we broke windows but it was already beyond. you couldn't do anything. the flames were out of control. >>the boys escaped by running from the trailer but they closed the door behind them once the fire started. it's unclear if any of the boys or their parents will face charges. today a group people in alameda will wade out into the water off crown beach to mark the first anniversary of the death of raymond zach. the 52-year-old died there one year ago. police and firefighters watched from the shore as officials couldn't save him because the water rescue program had ended due to lack of funds. zach's family has filed a lawsuit against the city and the county of alameda accusing them of negligence. two children had to be rescued in two separate incidents near san francisco beaches. this is video of first rescue off chrissy field around 1:30 yesterday afternoon. the coast guard boat and helicopter were called in to help. a 12-year-old boy was pulled from the water and transported to the hospital. fire officials say the child was not seriously hurt. they say it's not clear how the boy got so far out into the water in the first place. the other rescue happened less than an hour later in san francisco sea cliff neighborhood. a 16-year-old boy got stuck on a rock. firefighters were able to get to him safely. he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. a sonoma county sheriff's office fears its deputy have to make a few rescues this weekend. they are patrolling popular spots along the river where drinking has been a problem in the past. the other problems with river parties they say are the large numbers of cars clogging the narrow river roads. and all the trash left behind. the golden gate have your lunchtime numbers coming up. back to our top story right now. and the work under way on the dumbarton bridge. allie rasmus was able to get exclusive access to the bridge and any setbacks or is all on schedule right now? >> reporter: everything is going according to plan, everything is on track. we're standing on the dumbarton bridge, on the west side, so beyond us is menlo park and east palo alto. but the west side of the dumbarton is where the bum, of this work is happening. we're standing just 300 feet away from the construction going on in the distance. you can hear and feel the rumble. jackhammers and construction work. this is part of a three-day closure that is happening for seismic retrofit project. here to tell us more is effy, the spokeswoman for the project. telling us what progress did crews make overnight? >> they are exactly on schedule this morning. they demoed about six treat for of concrete opening a huge gap across the bridge. they're now working on setting in rebar to replace that gap with new concrete, and to put in the seismic joint, the reason for the closure this weekend. >> what is that joint going to do in the future? >> the seismic joint is a couple of steel plates basically that move over each other. right under the deck where motorists are driving. and it allows the deck to expand and contract in the case of a quake. >> and there's other work that's happening here, so maintenance work taking advantage of the fact there are no cars on the bridge to do that. what deep of work is going on here? >> caltrans is taking advantage of the closure and getting work done outside of the contractors way. we've got a grinding and paving and some canopy upgrades throughout the entire span. there are repairs going on to signs, potholes, the barriers -- also overnight caltrans raised that section of the bridge by 5 inches. >> so lot of work going on, progress is good. any chance the becoming could open ahead of schedule, before 5 a.m. tuesday? >> there's always a chance. we're all hoping for it. it's too early to call in the weekend. but we'll work towards that, absolutely. >> thank you very much. and that's why the dumbarton gunman has died. police say the man held hostages at a real estate office before shooting himself twice in the head. he died at the hospital last night. he went to the office looking for someone he thought owed hum money. he held employees hostage but then released them. officers believe the man shot himself sometime after the hostages were released, but before officers storm the building. an unruly passenger who tried to rush the cockpit of an american airlines plane is due in court next week. according to the fbi, 24-year- old ryan schneider of canada rushed toward the front of the plane after it land at miami international yesterday. passengers say had was yelling "get me off the plane" and appeared to be drunk. they tackled him and held on to until police arrived to make an arrest. and clouds out there this morning. 50s outside your door at this hour. we will be slightly warmer for the afternoon, anywhere from 2 to 5 degrees and a warming trend continuing all the way into well looks like tuesday into wednesday. i'll break this down for you, show you where we may actually see a lingering shower for your saturday as well. >> work is well under way on the dunbarton bridge this morning. it's scheduled to be closed until tuesday morning so crews can do seismic retro fitting. ally rasmus is live at the bridge and got an exclusive look at the progress. >> reporter: cal trans escorted us don't dunbarton bridge. we are 300 feet away from the construction work happening over the weekend. this is the reason by the dunbarton bridge is closed for the weekend. we're on the western side of the bridge which is where the bulk of the work is happening. let's look at the excavation work done overnight. this is video you'll see only on taboo. where you see the construction -- only on 2. you see the construction worker with the jack hammer. next to him there is a six-foot gap in the concrete spanning across all six lanes of the dunbarton. that's why the bridge had to be completely closed to traffic. over the weekend crews will put in place a new seismic joint that will make thend of the bridge safer in the event of an earthquake. >> a couple of steel plates that move over hesp other right underneath the deck -- over each other right underneath the deck where motorists are trying and it allows the bridge to expand and contract in the case of a quake. >> reporter: the work is on schedule. they made very good progress overnight, and everything is happening according to plan. the work is supposed to continue until 5 a.m. tuesday morning. the bridge is supposed to remain closed until then, but we're told that if they get the work done early, there is a possibility that bridge could open early. at this point, though, it's too early in the game to know if that's going to happen. live in the dunbar ton bridge. >> here are the alternate routes around the construction. san mateo bridge to the north or south on highway 237. >> there was a shooting near the dunbarton bridge before it closed, around 5:15 in men although park on the bay front expressway between university avenue and willow road. a 30-year-old victim was then found shot in his car on highway 101 at woodside road. he is expected to survive. police are looking for four men who targeted the victim from a dark green four-door car. a man is in critical condition this morning after a shooting in san francisco. it happened just after 2:00 a.m., 2 a.m. at oakdale avenue and baldwin court in the bay view neighborhood. police say a man was shot at least once. his injuries are life threatening. no arrests have been mate. oakland police need the public's help in solving a hit and run. it happened around 9:20 last night in the area of foothill boulevard at harrington avenue. police say the male victim was critically injured and taken to highland hospital with serious head injuries as well as other injuries. investigators say they don't have much information to go on right now. at this point they aren't sure about the type of vehicle that hit the victim. volunteers will not be searching for sierra lamar today as they usually do on saturdays. instead they are breaking for the holiday, but will resume their searches next week. last night, hundreds of people turned out for a fund-raiser in support of sierra's family. [ music ] >> there was some live music and dancing at jason stevens wineery in gilroy. people were asked to donate $20 each to help fund search- related expenses. sierra's family says they are grateful for the community support. >> having people here for us, to support us, and you know, if we're staying positive, they're staying positive with us. that definitely, i think helps a lot. >> i am hoping to just give support to the family, and let them know we're praying for them and that we hope the best for them. >> the next volunteer search is scheduled for wednesday, 8 a.m. a hope and faith rally will be held on june 1 in fremont at washington high school, which is here sierra lamar's former school. the suspect in the sierra lamar case is being held without bail and is due to return to court next week. he made his first court appearance on thursday. the hearing lasted less than a minute and he did not enter a plea. the 21-year-old is charged with sierra's kidnapping and murder and is eligible for the death penalty. authorities say garcia-torres's d.n.a. was found on clothing that belonged to sierra, it was in her bag which was discovered near her home two days after she disappeared. garcia-torres is due back in court next thursday. meantime, the santa clara county sheriff's dive team completed a search at the reservoir near morgan hill. they spent the week looking for any sign of sierra lamar but didn't find anything in connection to the case. the sheriff's department says it will resume the search of area water ways next tuesday. a prayer vigil will be held in hayward tomorrow night for slain nursing student michelle le. family and friends will gather at 6 p.m. sunday to mark the anniversary of le's disappearance. investigators say the 26-year- old was attacked one year ago on may 26 at the kaiser parking garage in hayward. her body was discovered four months later. her former school mate has been charged with the murder and her trial is scheduled for september. investigators say pg&e put the public at risk tore at least 30 years and have recommended steep fines. pg&e already faces millions in fines following the 2010 san bruno explosion that killed eight people but now it faces even more fines after a new staff report by the state public utilities commission found the company misclassified hundreds of miles of natural gas transmission lines and allowed some lines to run at dangerously high pressures. pg&e says it plans to file a response in july. firefighters had to put out a grass fire along coyote creek. the fire was reported around 9:45 last night. a fire department captain told the san jose mercury news that the fire burned about 5000 square feet of grass and shrubs, and it did put off a lot of smoke, it smoldered for hours but unfortunately didn't damage any buildings. cal fire is urging caution this weekend because of increasing fire danger. these firefighters in st. helena are getting radar. the official start of fire season is more than a week away, but stayed wide, fires are -- statewide, fires are running double this time compared to last year. cal fire and campers we spoke to at the napa valley state park know how quickly a small fire can grow. >> we're running fires on a daily basis, where last year at this time, we weren't anywhere near the same level. >> i think it's good that it rained so we don't have to worry about every spark. >> cal fire says don't let the cool weather fool you. when the weather warms up and the wind gets blowing, the dry grass that fuels wildfires will disneyworld. a total of 75 acres burned, according to the orlando sentinel. heavy smoke from the fire temporarily forced the closure of interstate 4 last night. fire officials called the fire suspicious and are investigating the cause. memorial day weekend is looking a little hazy in parts of the southwest. smoke from this wildfire in southwestern new mexico is spreading across the state, and into arizona. strong winds are pushing ash from the fire 35 to 40 miles away. air quality warnings are going up as far away as albuquerque and santa fe. the fire has burned more than 130 square miles. a wildfire near julien, california has scorched thousands of acres. it's been dubbed the banner fire. this was a 15 ache fire early thursday afternoon but it spread fast, growing to more than 1000 acres in just two hours. hot, dry and windy conditions pushed the flames straight for daniel osborne's house. >> i seen it coming, and i had my water hose. then the fire trucks came in. real glad to see them. >> we did get an update from cal fire this morning. the banner fire is now estimated at 4100 acres. it is 30% contained. fire crews have not determined how the wildfire started. a new storm is slowly moving toward the southeast. sub tropical storm beryl is expected to main its strength as it approaches georgia and florida tomorrow night. it may dump a significant amount of rain which might actually be good news, as long as no one is hurt, because the area is experiencing a pretty bad drought. and what was once hurricane bud is now a tropical depression, raining on mexico's pacific coast. people in manzanillo knew it was coming and began boarding up homes and businesses there yesterday. there is heavy rain in the area, 6 to 10 inches expected in many spots. emergency officials in puerto vallerto are ready. the man accused of killing etan patz may be mentally i will. the lawyers say hernandez is by polar, schizophrenic and as a history of delusions. he was arrested yesterday after telling police he strangled etan in 1979. his wife and daughter were visually upset in court. hernandez is on suicide watch. a teenage gunman goes on a killing ram nag finishland. police scoured the southern part of the country immediately after the shootings. investigators say the suspect indiscriminately opened fire on a crowd of people outside of a restaurant. two individuals were killed, while seven others were wounded. the alleged shooter surrendered some five hours later. police recovered two weapons, including a hunting rifle. investigators say it is too early to determine a motive. the vet can says pope benedict xvi is shocked and saddened by the arrest of a staff member who is accused of leaking secret documents. the suspect reportedly worked as a butler for pope benedict since 2006. he is accused of leaking documents to an italian journalist. those documents allege corruption and power struggles within the vatican. in a separate case, vatican officials ousted the president of the vatican bank for also allegedly leaking confidential documents. jurors in the john edwards corruption trial will return to court on tuesday. it will be their seventh day of deliberations. edwards is charged with six counts of accepting illegal campaign contributions. he faces up to 30 years in prison, and a half million dollars in fines. the judge closed the courtroom yesterday to deal with what she called was a juror matter. she then sent the jury home for the holiday weekend. jurors must reach a unanimous decision on each count in order to convict. dozens of inmates in las vegas are free this morning after corrections officers called in sick. officials released 70 non- violent inmates yesterday because the jail just wasn't properly staffed. the police union says it was not a blue flu protesting impending layoffs and downsizing. the union says the jail was already planning to release some inmates to plug an $18 million budget hole. >> there's been no organized effort. what c.o.'s called in that was on an individual basis. we don't condone that. if we had known about that prior to, individual definitely told them do not do that. >> c.o.'s are corrections officers. the north las vegas police department stresses public safety is not in jeopardy. they have partnerships with other jails and say if there's a large number of arrests this weekend they can use them. astronauts have entered the dragon. the crew of the international space station opened the hatch of the spacex cap sewell named jet dragon and floated right inside it this morning. the first person to go inside said it smelled like a brand new car. the crew of the space station slid open that hatch to begin the work of unloading the world's first commercial supply ship. and a nasa shuttle heads to houston but it's not going by air. it's heading there by barge. a full-sized replica left florida bound for the texas space center. the shuttle nicknamed the explorer has been on display at the kennedy space center for the last 18 years. it should reach houston by june 1. and a political twist. former business partners of mitt romney donated vast amounts of money to bridge 5 inches so they can install new bearings. also demolished six feet of concrete in order to add a seismic joint that will make it safer during an earthquake. the bridge is set to reopen on tuesday morning. if you have to get around that area here are alternate routes that we can give you while that bridge is closed. you can use the san mateo bridge or go around the bay on highway 237. ally rasmus is on that bridge right now. she'll have a live report at 9:25. muni passengers will have to survive a while without the most used rail line in the city. they began shutting down service at 7:00 this morning. it will be out of service for nine days due to construction at church and debos. muni says 20,000 people ride that line each weekday. it runs from ocean beach to the cal trans station near at&t park. >> takes me right to where i work. and it's just right down the street from my apartment. it's super convenient. now it's going to be a real pain. >> shut down also affects the jay church which will still run from geneva north which will stop at the church street station. buses will be added to help the passengers. all right in san francisco, 23eur9 street between mission and howard streets is closed. crews are working to build a temporary bridge for the new transbay terminal. it won't reopen until 5 on tuesday. the golden gate bridge's 65th an vinny zero -- 75th anniversary celebration is under way. determine an identity or cause of death. but law enforcement officials say they are sure the body is not missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. police say the body found had dark background hair with blue fingernail polish. she was wearing an old navy shirt and ma jama bottoms. authorities say her ethnicity is still not known. >> we always have to treat it as if it could be a homicide. our investigators will do everything we can to follow up on all the leads to continue to canvas the area, talk to neighbors. >> police are also checking with nearby law enforcement agencies on their missing persons cases. there will be a gathering today to remember a young san pablo man who was killed in a drive-by shooting in pleasant hill. michael dejuan jones was shot and killed in front of a home on devinshire court the night of february 11th. family and friends tell k.t.v.u., today would have been his 22nd birthday. they will mark the occasion this afternoon at loma regional park in antioc. jones' killing remains unsolved. witnesses told police a blue saturn raced from the scene after the shots were fired. castro valley also remembering a victim of an unsolved murder. 14-year-old jenny lynn was found dead inside her home 18 years ago. her family led a march last night to support their foundation tore child safety. they also say they want to keep jenny's killing in the public eye, so that maybe someone will come forward with information to find the person responsible. >> we're just so grateful that we still have so many people who come forward, and help us establish this effort, and make it going through all these years. >> there is a $100,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of her killer. >>two girls in bakersfield died in a fire started by kids playing with matches. the girls were only two and three years old. they were playing in a vacant trailer with two boys who were a couple of years older. firefighters say the trailer caught fire after the boys lit the matches. >> we ran over here, grabbed the water hose. nothing we could do. they said there might be babies. we broke windows out but it was already beyond -- you couldn't do anything. the flames were out of control. >> the boys escaped by running from the trailer. they closed the door behind them once the fire started. it's unclear if the boys or their parents will face charges. today a group of people in alameda will wade out into the water off crown beach to mark the anniversary of the death of raymond zach. the 52-year-old died in one year ago. police and firefighters watched from the shore. fire officials said they could not save him because the water rescue program had ended due to lack of funds. zach's family has filed a lawsuit against the city and county of alameda, accusing them of negligence. >>two children had to be rescued from san francisco beaches in two separate incidents. this is video of the first rescue. a coast guard boat and helicopter were both called into help. it happened around 1:30 yesterday afternoon. a 12-year-old boy was pulled from the water and taken to the hospital. fire officials say the child was not seriously hurt. they say it's not clear how the boy got so far out into the water in the first place. the other rescue happened less than an hour later in san francisco's sea cliff neighborhood. a 16-year-old boy got stuck on a rock. firefighters were able to get him to safety and he was taken to the hospital. the sonoma county sheriff's office fears its deputies will have to make a few rescues in weekend. they're patrolling popular spots along the river where drinking has been a problem. the other problems with river parties they say are the large numbers of cars clogging the narrow river roads. and of course all that trash that's left behind. it's feeling a little bit like winter up in the sierra this memorial weekend. here's what it looked like at least yesterday. heavy, wet snow fell around the 5000 young patients are recovering from a triple transplant. surgeons at lucille packard children's hospital transplanted one heart a day for three days three weeks ago. the first went to amman disa seacrest, a student at st. mary's college. the next day william wiley medrow. then another heart became available for james spencer, a freshman at santa rosa junior college. all three are now giving thanks. >> they lost someone important in their lives and they gave me a second chance. >> very happy. very thankful. i certainly would not be here without it. >> you never know how long it actually now turning mostly cloudy. turning mostly clear by the afternoon once again. new this morning, if brother of blind activist chen wong chen has gone missing in china. chen feared that something bad would happen to his family after he escaped house arrest in china and took refuge at the u.s. embassy, and then flew to the u.s. chen's brother appears to have become the latest target over chinese government reprisals. his disappearance comes just three days after he told the news organization about how he's been tortured since his brother escaped to the u.s. more than 120,000 government workers, including members of congress, could be victims of a cyber attack. last year someone hacked into a system involving retirement savings. the names, addresses and social security numbers of 43,000 government employees could have been leaked. in addition, the social security numbers of 80,000 other people were exposed. inspectors do not believe any funds were stolen. 3000 coalition troops have lost their lives since the start of the war in afghanistan. the death toll reached 3000 with the passing of petty officer ryan j. wilson of shasta, california. he died may 20th from complications associated with a medical condition. almost 2000 u.s. troops have been killed in and around afghanistan since 2001. a new report details the nuclear power of iran. a washington d.c. think tank says tehran has increased its output of low enriched uranium. if it was refined the total production over the last five years could be enough to arm five warheads. these talks in baghdad -- peace talks in baghdad this week stalled. countries including the u.s. plan to meet again in moscow next month. our top story this morning. the weekend closure of the dunbarton bridge. it's shut down so crews can do seismic retro fitting work. ally rasmus is live at the bridge with how that work is progressing. >> reporter: we are still on the dunbarton bridge, although the construction crews moved us further away from the site. that's because the contractor who is escorting us up here had to get back to work. just over the incline is where the bulk of this work is taking place, on the western end of the dunbarton bridge. and cal trans did take us up to where this work was going on, just below where you see the guy with the jack hammer working. there is a 6-foot gap going across all six lanes of the bun bar don bridge. they had to open up the bridge in order to bring in some equipment, to tear open the concrete so they can put in a new seismic joint in place. >> a seismic joint is a couple of steel plates basically that move over each other, right underneath the deck where motorists are driving. it allows the deck to expand and contract in the case of a quake. >> reporter: now, while the bridge is closed, cal trans is taking advantage of the clearer to do some other maintenance work. they're doing here, using chains to check for cracks inside the concrete. they did find a crack and spray painted the area to mark it off. they were able to tell there was a crack inside the concrete in that area based on the sound the chains made when they scrape them over the concrete. listen to it. [ chains scraping ] >> reporter: it makes a really distinct hollow sound, so that's something they will have to work on while the bridge is closed. the bridge is supposed to be closed until 5 a.m. tuesday for all of this work. it could open early if the work is ahead of schedule. but at this point, according to the spokes woman it's too early to know if the bridge is going to open early. overnight tonight crews are supposed to put in that seismic joint. at this time tomorrow we will have a better idea if the bridge will open early. so far everything is on schedule. live at the dunbarton bridge. k.t.v.u., channel 2 news. look at this map, because it gives you a look at the alternate routes you can use this weekend. you can either go north and use the san mateo bridge or go south and get around the bay on highway 237. a federal crime lab in walnut creek is examining evidence from a rigged flashlight that exploded at a salvation army warehouse in arizona. two workers at that phoenix salvation army center were hurt on thursday. the salvation army says one of the workers picked up the flashlight while sift ing through a donation bin. when he turned it on the flashlight exploded and a nearby worker suffered minor injuries. >> concern with these devices is there have been no targets. they have been randomly left for any innocent victim to pick up. >> earlier this month, two rigid flashlights confer left outside a business in glendale, arizona. the crime leg run by the u.s. bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives is going to try to determine whether the flashlight that went off thursday was rigged in the same way. a began man who took hostages in indiana has died. police say the man held hostages at a real estate office before shooting himself in the head. he died last night at the hospital. police believe the man went to the office looking for someone he thought owed him money. he held employees hostage and then released them. officers believe the man shot himself sometime after the hostages were release and before officers stormed the building. an unruly passenger who tried to rush the cockpit of an american airlines plane is due in court next week. according to the f.b.i., 24- year-old ryan snyder of canada rushed towards the front of the plane after it landed at miami international airport yesterday. passengers say he was yelling, get me off the plane, and appeared to be drunk. they tackled him and held on to him until police arrived and made an arrest. >> the way terrorism is these days, i mean just shifting in the seats, so we were a bit worried, if there was something in his baggage. >> officials don't believe there was any terrorism connection. snyder is in federal custody. he faces charges over resisting arrest and disorderly intoxication. san francisco police are looking for the owners of more than 100 bicycles allegedly stolen by one teenager. this is just one of the bikes officers say was stolen by 18- year-old irving sanchez. police say they found eight stolen bikes in his silver terrace home. an investigation then led officers to two storage lockers in oakland where they say they discovered another 106 bikes. if you think one of those bikes could be yours, log on to ktvu.com. we have a things see all the recovered bike -- we have a link to see all the recovered bicycles under web links. it was a special home coming this memorial day weekend in san mateo. soldiers with the 101st airborne arrived yesterday. in 1972, the city welcomed the men of a company home from vietnam with a parade. and tomorrow, 40 years later, san mateo will honor the soldiers' service with another parade and celebration. >> just honor and a privilege to be here to celebrate something that's been going on for soloing. it's great what the people do here for the soldiers. we appreciate everything they've done for us. >> tomorrow's parade starts at 11 a.m. in downtown san mateo. former u.s. congresswoman gabrielle giffords made a rare public appearance last night.
